A Right and Wrong Unity
by Scott Price

Today we live in an evil world. The evil I speak of is false religion. One tool of false religion is the ecumenical movement, which is gaining momentum daily. Compromise is the key to the success of this movement. To them, unity is more important than truth, especially the truth of the gospel. More than likely the vast majority of them have never heard the gospel, much less believed it.

They throw the term "gospel" around quite often but it is rare for them to define it. Some might say it is only and simply the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. No doubt those are essential ingredients of the gospel but not the gospel specifically. The gospel, according to Paul in 1 Cor. 15:3-4 is how that Christ died, and that, "according to the scriptures." The scriptures declare Christ accomplished his death (Luke 9:31). Christ died as a substitute and representative. He was a propitiation for those he died for, and for every successful propitiation there is a successful reconciliation.

The term gospel means good news or glad tidings. It is not good news to have to work for salvation or once you obtain salvation, to lose that salvation and to finally perish. This is nothing but bad news. To be more precise, it is a curse. Gaining or maintaining salvation by deeds of the law is putting yourself under "the curse of the law." The gospel according to the scriptures is salvation by pure sovereign grace without any works or conditions on the sinner but all the conditions are placed on Christ alone. The ingredient that stands out the most in the gospel is imputed righteousness.  Romans 1:16-17, chapter 4, and 10:1-4 tell us this. You might even be a five point Calvinist and still not believe the doctrine of imputed righteousness only to be lost in your sin. I know of many who were in that category, including myself. Without righteousness imputed there is no salvation or justification at all, for anybody.

What am I getting at anyway? The vast majority of religion is false religion because they don't believe the only true gospel. They have "another gospel" (Gal. 1:6-9 and II Cor. 11:3-4). This is a perverted gospel that is actually bad news. This false gospel features a false christ. A christ who died for all and failed to save all. Power of this false gospel comes from another spirit, which is definitely not the Holy Spirit. They are indeed in unity, in that they hate the God of the bible, and love the god of their imagination. We love the God they hate and we hate the god they love. So it is not just two views of the same God. One God is true and the other is false. If we believe God is a jealous God, how can we say there are opposite views of the same God. He will not share His glory!

Christ has promised to come back "in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who know not God and obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ" (II Thes. 1:7-9). These people "are of their father the devil," which means they are not my brother. Their false perverted bad news gospel dishonors every attribute of God's glorious character! Can anyone have unity with us as we defend the true gospel of sovereign grace, while false religion defends salvation by works. We hope there are people in many different denominations who will be in unity with us on these things.
