Augustine's Gospel Testimony Shortly Before Death

I have written a lot against the teaching of Gus on meritorious justification in his Enchiridion and The City of God. But in my studied opinion, he had a very radical change on the matter of God's grace being purely sovereign and denying all merit very near the end of his life. This is also confirmed by a study of his Retractions which came shortly before, which are hard to find but I have a copy (with heavily Roman Catholic commentary denying what is actually said).

Bob, this is excellent to hear! I'll forward to Cole because I know he has been studying Augustine.

Jacob Arminius in his response to the "Nine Questions" in the answer to question 8 affirms a quote from Augustine supporting his own views that I have not been able to find, even in his earlier works supporting the notion of meritorious grace worked within humanity. Arminius gave no references to any quote that he cited responding to this particular challenge to his doctrines.

If anyone can find this quote in Augustine it would be much appreciated! I am currently of the opinion that the quote is a fraudulent invention. The whole response to the 9 questions was coached by the RCC Jesuits in my judgment.

Even if ole Gus said this, it may have been an earlier time in his life, cause he's said the exact opposite toward his later life as far as I can tell.
