As Becometh Saints - Published on July 13, 2019
...“Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savour. But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;” (Ephesians 5:1-3).     Who are these persons called “saints”?  They are sinners who were chosen by God, redeemed by the blood of Christ, regenerated by the Holy Spirit, and preserved unto glory, all by the sovereign grace of God in and by the Lord Jesus Christ.  Every believer is a saint (sanctified one; set apart by God’s grace in Christ) by virtue of his union with and redemption by Christ.  To be called to sainthood is to be cal...

The Justice of Grace - Published on July 13, 2019
...    Grace is amazing and therefore righteous grace in that the justice of God which once stood against us as sinners alienated from God, now stands for us as those who have been reconciled to God in Christ Jesus.  The words of Augustus Toplady ring true to the scriptures:  "JUSTICE CANNOT TWICE DEMAND PAYMENT AT MY BLEEDING SURETY'S HAND...AND THEN AGAIN AT MINE." It is the justice of the thrice Holy that stands to guarantee our continued security before the law and throne of God.       John tells us that all confessing sinners are cleansed from all sin and that God is "faithful and JUST to forgive us our sins."  God's justice demands the forgiveness of all the sins of those for whom Christ died.  This is because H...

The Precious Earnest of the Holy Spirit - Published on July 13, 2019
...In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. - Ephesians 1:13-14     The “earnest” mentioned here bears some similarity to our usage today of the phrase “earnest money” – referring to the money that is often required as a deposit when one enters into a sales contract to buy real estate.  It is money that is given to express our sincere, earnest intention to fulfill the terms we’ve agreed upon, guaranteed by the fact that legally one must forfeit their “earnest” money if th...

The Natural Presumption of Haman - Published on July 13, 2019
...So Haman came in. And the king said unto him, What shall be done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honour? Now Haman thought in his heart, To whom would the king delight to do honour more than to myself? - Esther 6:6     In the historical narrative of Esther, we learn that Haman was not only mistaken to presume it was he who was to receive this special honor from the Persian King Ahasuerus, but that the King actually had in mind honoring Haman’s worst enemy, Mordecai the Jew.  In consideration of the recent promotion of Haman by the King to the highest position in his kingdom, Haman’s mistaken presumption is understandable.  Why wouldn’t Haman imagine that he, above all others, was the intended recipient of the King’s honor?  ...

I Am Holy and Righteous in Christ - Published on July 13, 2019
...     The gospel is the scandal and Rock of offense and sinners have to stumble on it. God has designed it that way.       And that is why people stutter when it comes to the function of the Law. They keep claiming that which they know cannot do because of indwelling sin.       The fallen(sinners) by nature want to do stuff and that to say we want to earn our keep.      Unfortunately and fortunately,  God does not work like that.      You can't earn what God only gives freely. Salvation can only be given by grace and that means freely or without a cause in the sinner. That really is disabling to the self righteous.       And I am glad that God saves me freely and ...

Dressed for the Wedding - Published on July 13, 2019
...And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment: - Matthew 22:11     In The Parable of the Marriage Feast we are reminded that there is a sense in which every sinner may be said to approach the judgment before God clothed in 1 of 2 ways.  Like the man who didn’t belong at the wedding feast, all of us by nature initially will dare to stand before a thrice holy God dressed in our own self-righteousness.  Sadly, most persist therein and plunge headlong into judgment thinking they will be just fine dressed in their robe of self-righteousness.     I recognize that most so dressed don’t see it that way.  But do not be mistaken.  If by way of your thinking, that which distinguishes you fro...

The Promise - Published on July 13, 2019
...For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. - Galatians 3:18     There are certain things in this world that are exact opposites of each other and cannot be joined together.   While both oil and water are liquids, they cannot be successfully mixed. Cats and dogs are not natural friends.  Ice and fire will ultimately destroy each other.   So it is with the principle of law and the principle of promise.   These two concepts are as opposite as night and day and one must overturn the other.  Yet the natural religious bent of men is to try to amalgamate the two as if they are simply two sides of the same issue.     Nothing could be farther from the truth.   Paul plainly states this...

Paths of Righteousness - Published on July 13, 2019
...“He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name sake.” Psalm 23:3     The Good Shepherd of the sheep leads his flock in those righteous paths ordered of the Father and established by the Son.  “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delights to walk therein.” (Psalm 37:23) Christ is that good man, sent of the Father to take every step necessary to “finish the transgression , and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.” (Daniel 9:24) In Psalm 40:8 Christ said; “I delight to do thy will O God.”  He, “who for the joy set before him, endured the cross, desp...

Chosen in Christ - Published on July 13, 2019
...Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: 4According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: - Ephesians 1:3-4     The doctrine of election does not stand in isolation.  He chose a people (1) unto something or with an objective in mind and (2) He chose them in a Person – the Lord Jesus Christ.  Notice that God chose a people unto salvation in Christ, that they “…should be holy and without blame before him…”  Think on that!  God has always viewed the elect, those He chose in Christ unto salvation, as holy and without blame in Christ.  The all...

Of Christ as the Covenant Head of the Elect - Published on July 13, 2019
...    There are various characters, relations, and offices, which Christ sustains in the covenant of grace; among which, that of a federal Head is one: Christ is often said to be the "Head of the Church"; not of any particular congregation of saints, in this or the other part of the world; but of the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven, even of all the elect of God, that ever have been, are, or will be in the world, (Eph. 1:22, 23, 5:23; Col. 1:18) and he is a Head to them in different senses; he is that to them as a natural head is to a natural body, and the members of it; which is if the same nature with it, superior to it, communicates life, sense, and motion to it, as well as overlooks and protects it; such an Head of influence is Christ to the ...

A Discourse on the Cleansing Value of Christ's Blood - Published on July 13, 2019
...And the blood of Jesus Christ, his Son, cleanseth us from all sin. - 1 John 1:7     The apostle, in the beginning of the chapter, puts the saints to whom he writes in mind of the Gospel he had writ, wherein he had declared to them that Word of life which had been with the Father, and was manifested to the world, and which he now declares again, that they might have a fellowship with the apostles in the truth, and not with the false teachers in their errors; and for an incentive, assures them that the fellowship of those that kept the truth as it is in Jesus was with the Father and with the Son: ver. 3, 1 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son, Jesus Chr...

What Elect Sinners Must Believe - Published on July 13, 2019
...    When I was in false religion, I always assumed it was God’s intention or purpose to save all men and women without exception.  I was wrongly taught that Christ came, lived, died, and rose again in order for God to save those who “would open their heart’s door,” allowing Him to take up residence in their hearts.  Little did I know that such teaching only opened the door for self-righteous, lost, sinners to glory in their work of faith, instead of giving God the glory and honor due only unto Him for saving sinners by His grace.  His grace is His unmerited favor based on perfect satisfaction to God’s law and justice by His Son, Jesus Christ.     Lost sinners have a tendency to put a lot of stock in their faith, i.e., thei...

A Perfect Righteousness Required and Imputed - Published on July 13, 2019
...    We must have a righteousness in which Jehovah Himself cannot find a flaw, a righteousness which Jehovah cannot mend, a righteousness which neither sin nor Satan can mar; and unless we have on a righteousness of this nature, we can never enter into the blessedness of the world to come.     Where, then, are we to find it?     Eternal praises to the matchless mercy of a covenant God, we have it in the blessed Person, glorious work, and spotless obedience of the Lord Jesus Christ!     And, therefore, as it was essential for Him to fulfill all righteousness for His people, He loved the Lord His God with all His heart, with all His mind, and with all His strength.  He began at the beginning, and went through holily, righteously, and stead...

Eternal Life : Knowing the One True God - Published on July 13, 2019
...    When it comes to this important life and death issue of justification and eternal life, most religious people rely upon experiences they’ve had and emotions they have felt to convince themselves they are alright.  I can write on this issue with a great deal of experience because I know what I relied on as a lost person.  I made my first profession of faith at the age of 7 in response to my mother pointing at me and my friends as we laughed and acted up on the back row.  I thought she pointed for me to go to the front, so I went.  The preacher asked me: Are you a sinner?  Do you confess all your sins?  Will you accept Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour?  Obviously I wasn’t going to answer “no” to any of those ques...

Union of Christ With The Church - Published on July 13, 2019
...    I will now briefly notice this union with Adam, &c. Whilst they were thus set up in Christ, and as such loved with an everlasting love, it was the pleasure of the Father that they should be partakers of flesh and blood, and therefore as rational creatures they were created in a natural head, Adam, and under the law; were in common with all his posterity, left to fall in him, and became subject to the curse of the law. While they were thus a part of the same fallen family of Adam involved in the same condemnation, they by the eternal purpose of God were distinguished from the rest of the human family - and were from the beginning chosen unto salvation; and predestinated unto the adoption of children, by Jesus Christ, and were given to Christ as His portion, as it is writte...

The Chief of Sinners - Published on July 13, 2019
...    The insufficiency of nature to such a work as conversion is, shows that men may not fall down and idolize their own wit and power.  A change from acts of sin to moral duties may be done by a natural strength and the power of natural conscience: for the very same motives which led to sin, as education, interest, profit, may, upon a change of circumstances, guide men to an outward morality; but a change to the contrary grace is supernatural.     Nothing can act beyond its own principle and nature.  Nothing in the world can raise itself to a higher rank of being than that which nature has placed it in; a spark cannot make itself a star, though it mount a little up to heaven; nor a plant endue itself with sense, nor a beast adorn itself with reason; nor a m...

O Wretched Man That I Am - Published on July 13, 2019
...    There is a vast difference between the view the self-righteous lost sinner has of himself and the view the saved sinner has of himself.  The problem lies in natural man’s depravity which renders him totally incapable of discerning good and evil.  For this reason, they judge those people who are moral, sincere, and dedicated to religion to be “good people” in spite of the fact that the Scripture plainly declare:  “As it is written, There is NONE righteous, no, not one: There is NONE that understandeth, there is NONE that seeketh after God.  They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is NONE THAT DOETH GOOD, no, not one. (Rom.3:10-12).  Without question, every sincere, dedicated, moral religion...

God's Only Means of Salvation - Published on July 13, 2019
...    Most people in religion today are confused when it comes to God’s appointed means of salvation.  According to them, their god uses a variety of means to encourage those who hear to “accept Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior.”  Some claim they have seen visions that caused them to “seek the Lord.” Some think they have heard voices that called them to salvation.  Some who have survived horrific events in their lives have been changed from ungodly individuals into religious, seemingly moral, dedicated church goers.  Still others think God can save sinners with or without the use of any means, i.e., they think if God has purposed to save somebody, he will save them any way he pleases.  My question to all of us is, &ldquo...

The Eternal Love of God for His Own - Published on July 13, 2019
...    I was raised in religion and taught by well-intentioned individuals that “we were all God’s children,” that He “loved all men and women equally,” and that He wanted to and was trying to save everybody.    They continually quoted John 3:16 and followed it up with Scriptures such as “God is love,” I John 4:16.  To my natural unregenerate mind all of this sounded logical and was exactly what I wanted to believe.     I never imagined questioning their reasoning until God opened my eyes by His grace to see the glory of His love for His own.  I realize now that God’s love is infinitely greater than the love of the “god” I worshipped in my former state of idolatry.  The Bible knows and ...

The Sum and Substance of Christ's Death - Published on July 13, 2019
...    THEREFORE, if when Christ died was the time this [justification] was to be done, and if Christ was ordained to do it, if Christ was mighty to save, if Christ took flesh to do this work, if it was the will of God that He should do it, if Christ came on purpose to do it, if our sins were laid upon Christ and He suffered the punishment, (the curse of them) if He has redeemed us, if it was prophesied of Him that He should justify many and that His work should prosper, if Christ did answer His types, if He has exceeded all the priests and sacrifices under the Law; if there needs no more offerings for sin; if Christ has done all the Law required, if Christ has done what He came to do, if we are justified by His blood, if He has made us holy, and presented us without spot, if we are...
