Psalm 23
Part 7

"A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23!
Chapter 4

Water is essential for life and the key words above, for me, are “He leadeth”, once again showing and pointing to the role of the shepherd in the care of his flock, in this case our Good Shepherd, Christ.

It is the role of the shepherd to take the sheep to the clear waters where they can drink and be filled and certainly one thing that is implied is that the shepherd knows where the clear, still waters are. Sheep can go for months without actually drinking water if they are grazing on grass covered in heavy dew each morning, what a picture of still waters, silver droplets of dew hanging on leaves and grass in the early mornings.

For the believer, the picture is, of course, the life giving sustaining spiritual nourishment of Christ Himself. It is only the Spirit and life of Christ that will satisfy our thirsting soul.

Jesus said to the Samaritan woman at the well: “If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water” (John 4:10) She inquired of Him from whence He hast thou the living water and He answered her:

“Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:13-14)

Spring water is water that bubbles up in a fountain and is ever running and the Jews called this water “living water” so living waters with them are said to be always flowing and never cease.

So it is with us, His sheep, we will never thirst again because we will always have Him, the living water. He will never cease being our Good Shepherd and His care always flows to us, He will never lose even one of His sheep, and our true thirst is quenched for He is our meat and our drink and He invites us:

John 7:37 “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink”.

Jesus taught His disciples before His death that the comforter would come, the Holy Spirit and He would guide us into all truth, He would lead us and always unto the things of Christ. He would show us that only the true living water would satisfy and refresh our longing soul. May we come unto to Him and drink and be satisfied, just as the sheep are satisfied with the dew of the morning.
