Notes

Track eight is the title track, and it is the quietest testimony in the whole catalog. No argument, no defense, no demolition - just a man telling how he was actually saved. Raised in and out of churches, different creeds, different names, he heard a great many voices behind a great many pulpits. But one voice was different. Not the sound of human striving, but a voice that cut me through.

The chorus is the doctrine of the effectual call put as plainly as I know how to put it. It was never up to me. Never mine to earn or keep. Not through knowledge, not through earned belief, not through choosing or force of will. The song is built on a single conviction - that the dead do not raise themselves. In the dark He spoke my name, and His grace awakened me. That is what sweet release is. It is the relief of discovering that your salvation never rested on you, and so it can never be lost by you.

And the bridge guards the one thing that matters. If Christ is not the center, if His voice begins to fade, all the words become like shadows. Run from every empty sermon, every hollow sound. Only one voice brings the dead to life. The album is named for this song because this is the release everything else has been aching toward - a heart that finally rests in the silence where His voice remains. Sweet release. Sweet release.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Raised in and out of churches
Different creeds, different names
Different men behind the pulpit
Different fires, different flames

Something in their voices lingered
Something colder, something true
Not the sound of human striving
But a voice that cut me through

[Pre-Chorus]
Not through knowledge
Not through earned belief
Something deeper
Calling underneath

[Chorus]
It was never up to me
Never mine to earn or keep
In the silence I could hear
Christ was calling to His sheep

Not my will, not my release
Not my strength to make me free
In the dark He spoke my name
And His grace awakened me

[Verse 2]
They spoke of ladders built to heaven
Steps of effort, steps of pain
But the Grace preacher spoke of mercy
Not of loss, and not of gain

No proud title could contain it
No degree could make it stay
Just the love of Christ descending
Where no human hands could reach

[Pre-Chorus]
Not through choosing
Not through force of will
He was calling
And He calls me still

[Chorus]
It was never up to me
Never mine to earn or keep
In the silence I could hear
Christ was calling to His sheep

Not my will, not my release
Not my strength to make me free
In the dark He spoke my name
And His grace awakened me

[Bridge]
If Christ is not the center
If His voice begins to fade
All the words become like shadows
All the light becomes afraid

Run from every empty sermon
Run from every hollow sound
Only one voice brings the dead to life
Only one voice calls the found

[Chorus]
It was never up to me
Never mine to earn or keep
In the silence I could hear
Christ was calling to His sheep

Not my will, not my release
Not my strength to make me free
In the dark He spoke my name
And His grace awakened me

[Outro]
Raised in and out of churches
Different creeds, different names
Now my heart rests in the silence
Where His voice remains
