What does the Bible say about our inheritance as believers?

The Bible teaches that believers are heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, destined for a glorious inheritance.

The Scriptures affirm that believers in Christ are heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, a profound truth found in Romans 8:16-17. This means that as children of God, we inherit not just material blessings, but a spiritual fortune that encompasses eternal life and the glory of God. Our present sufferings are insignificant compared to the glorious inheritance awaiting us, as subtly expressed in Romans 8:18, where Paul states that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. This inheritance provides both hope and validation of our identity as God's children.

Romans 8:16-18

Why is our inheritance important for Christians?

Our inheritance encourages perseverance through trials and assures us of our identity as children of God.

The importance of our inheritance cannot be overstated; it serves as a vital source of encouragement for Christians amidst life's trials. Understanding that we will inherit a rich and glorious future helps Christians endure present sufferings, as elucidated in Romans 8:18. This perspective fosters hope and a deeper connection to our identity as God's children, assuring us that our struggles have purpose and that we are part of something much grander. Additionally, this truth motivates us to live in a way that reflects our inheritance, leading us to bear witness to the grace and love of God in a world in desperate need of hope.

Romans 8:18

How do we know we are children of God?

The Spirit testifies with our spirit, confirming that we are children of God.

Our assurance of being children of God comes from the inner testimony of the Holy Spirit. According to Romans 8:16, 'The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.' This divine witness affirms our identity and belonging within God's family. The presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives not only brings comfort and guidance but also acts as an assurance of our salvation and inheritance. This relationship is intrinsic to the believer's experience, confirming our position as joint-heirs with Christ and solidifying our hope in the glorious future that awaits us.

Romans 8:16

If you were sailing across the sea on a ship and had very little money yet you knew when you get to the other side you will inherit the largest fortune the world has ever known would you be content though you had very little while on your trip across the sea? While on this pilgrimage the believer may possess very little. But we have a rich inheritance to come. “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” (Rom 8:16-18)
