What does the Bible say about good works for believers?

The Bible teaches that believers are created for good works, which God has ordained for them to walk in (Ephesians 2:10).

According to Ephesians 2:10, believers are identified as God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. These good works are not merely actions but are supernatural manifestations of God's power in the lives of believers. This indicates that true faith is evidenced by the good works that arise from a genuine belief in Christ. Only through the transforming power of God can these works be performed, distinguishing believers from those who merely profess faith without the accompanying deeds.

Ephesians 2:10, James 2:14-26

How do we know repentance is true for believers?

True repentance is a unique work of the believer that involves turning from self to God (Romans 7:8-9).

Repentance is the first of the good works that only believers can truly perform. It involves a profound spiritual awakening to one's own sinfulness and a genuine turning away from self towards God. Believers recognize their sinful state, as described in Romans 7:8-9, and come to understand that their own righteousness is utterly worthless, likened to filthy rags (Isaiah 65:6). Through this understanding, believers are enabled to mourn over their sin and seek the grace and mercy of God, demonstrating the authenticity of their faith through the act of repentance.

Romans 7:8-9, Isaiah 65:6

Why is love important for Christians?

Love is a key evidence of a believer's faith, as it stems from a true understanding of God's love (1 John 4:7).

Love is the second essential work that only believers can exhibit, born from their understanding of God's nature. 1 John 4:7 emphasizes that love originates with God, and true believers recognize the significance of God's sacrificial love in sending His Son to die for sinners. This revelation transforms their hearts, enabling them to love others genuinely. The absence of love showcases a lack of knowledge of God, highlighting that only those who believe in Him will manifest this love, which is essential for Christian living and community.

1 John 4:7

What does submission mean for Christians?

Submission is a unique work of God within believers, reflecting their willingness to place themselves under God's authority.

Submission is described as the third good work that characterizes believers. It involves yielding oneself to the authority of God and those placed over them, such as parents, husbands, and church leaders. This act of submission is fundamentally different when viewed through the lens of faith. Noticeably, submission signifies recognizing God's sovereign rule in all aspects of life and willingly accepting His ordained structure. The believing heart perceives submission not as oppression but as an act of reverence towards God's governance and order, demonstrating confidence in His ultimate authority.
Why is worship essential for believers?

Worship distinguishes believers, as they worship God in spirit and truth (Philippians 3:3).

Worship stands as the fourth critical work of a believer, setting them apart as the circumcision who worship God in spirit. Philippians 3:3 indicates that true worship is not reliant on external rituals but stems from an inner transformation and relationship with Christ. Only believers, through the Holy Spirit, can genuinely engage in worship that pleases God. This worship expresses reverence, gratitude, and love towards God, affirming their faith and reflecting the joy of salvation. True believers recognize that worship flows from their heart's appreciation of God's grace, thus making it a central aspect of their lives.

Philippians 3:3

What does perseverance mean in the belief of a Christian?

Perseverance is the steadfastness of believers in faith, resting in Christ's work and waiting for His return (Hebrews 10:38-39).

Perseverance is the final good work ordained for believers, reflecting their continuous reliance on Christ. According to Hebrews 10:38-39, true believers live by faith, confidently resting in the person and work of Jesus Christ. This endurance signifies more than mere patience; it embodies the deep assurance that their salvation is secure and that they will ultimately be united with Christ. Believers demonstrate this by steadfastly clinging to their faith amid trials and challenges, revealing their genuine connection to Christ. This perseverance is not achieved through human effort but is a divine gift, ensuring that all whom God has called will remain faithful until the end.

Hebrews 10:38-39, 1 John 2:19

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. - Ephesians 2:10

All of the good works declared in this verse of Holy Scripture are the good works of faith. They are marvelous, supernatural works which manifest the power and presence of God in those who are enabled to do them. By these works the believer is set apart from all those pretenders of the faith; the believer’s faith being justified by these good works. (See James 2:14-26) There are five good works which every believing soul is ordained to walk in.

The first good work is the work of repentance. Repentance is a turning from ones self to the true and living God. It requires a spiritual awakening to sin. (See Romans 7:8-9) It is a despising of ones self. Repentance is a discovery that we are altogether as an unclean thing and all our righteousness’ are as filthy rags. (See Isaiah 65:6) Where is one in all of Adams fallen race that will take his place outside the camp with the lepers? Is there any of Adams sons that can look within and cry, O, wretched man that I am who shall deliver me from the body of this death? Romans 3:11 answers, “There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.” Only believers repent.

The second good work unique to only believers is love. The love of God can only be perceived by the believing heart seeing the Father sending his only begotten Son to suffer and die in our stead: That which reconciles the rebellious sinner is to see the hand of God making him to be sin for us who knew no sin. No matter who makes the boast; he that loves not knows not God; for God is love. (I John 4:7)

Submission is the third remarkable work of God in the believer: Parents over their children, husbands over their wives, employers over employees, civil government over the people, pastors over the assemblies and Christ over all. None but the believing heart can see such a glorious rule and put himself without reservation into the hands of God’s reigning king and submit to his rule.

The fourth work is worship. Only believers worship. “We are the circumcision which worship God in the spirit and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.” (Philippians 3:3)

The last good work ordained of God in which only the believer can walk is perseverance. (See Hebrews 10:38-39) Only a believer is content to walk in faith resting in the person and work of his redeemer and wait patiently for his return. (See I John 2:19)

These are the good works of faith and every believing soul created anew of God by his diving decree will walk in them.
