What does the Bible say about the Lordship of Christ?

The Bible affirms the Lordship of Christ, emphasizing His authority and sovereignty over all creation.

The Lordship of Christ is a foundational doctrine that highlights the authority of Jesus over all aspects of life. According to Scripture, Jesus is not simply a savior but is also the sovereign Lord of the universe. This is clearly seen in passages such as Philippians 2:9-11, where it states that every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Furthermore, His lordship signifies His right to govern and demand obedience from His followers, reflecting the true nature of the Gospel, which calls us into a relationship of submission and worship.

The importance of recognizing Christ's Lordship cannot be overstated, particularly in a culture where Jesus is often portrayed as merely a moral teacher or counselor. Embracing His lordship ensures that believers live under the authority of His Word, as shown in Matthew 28:18-20, where Jesus commissions His followers to make disciples under His sovereign rule. Ignoring His lordship leads to a distorted understanding of the Gospel, as seen in the historical context where early Christianity was diluted by pagan influences, creating a church that strays from the essence of Christ’s message.

How do we know Christ is sovereign over all creation?

The sovereignty of Christ is evidenced through Scripture, affirming His control over creation and His role in salvation.

Christ’s sovereignty is a key doctrine in the historic Reformed perspective, supported by numerous biblical passages asserting His supreme authority. Colossians 1:16-17 states, 'For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible.' This creates a clear picture of Christ’s preeminence in all of creation, underscoring that He is not just above creation but is intrinsically involved in its very existence.

Moreover, His sovereignty extends beyond creation to the realm of salvation itself. Ephesians 1:4-5 illustrates God's eternal purposes and choices in salvation, showing that believers are chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world. This reinforces the idea that Christ’s reign is not passive but active, ensuring His purposes are fulfilled through history. Understanding this sovereignty is crucial for Christians as it shapes our view of God’s providence and leads to a faith that trusts in His ultimate plans and will.

Why is the Lordship of Christ important for Christians?

The Lordship of Christ is vital as it defines our relationship with Him and informs our obedience to His commands.

Recognizing the Lordship of Christ is essential for understanding what it means to be a Christian. This acknowledgment shapes our entire approach to faith and life. When Jesus is Lord, it implies that His teachings, commands, and authority are central to our existence. John 14:15 says, 'If you love me, you will keep my commandments.' This relationship of love and obedience highlights the intimate bond between the believer and Christ, establishing that genuine faith expresses itself through submission to His lordship.

In today's world, where the concept of lordship can be diluted or ignored, it is crucial for Christians to grasp the significance of living under Christ’s reign. It encourages believers to align their lives with biblical principles rather than cultural norms that often conflict with the gospel. Acknowledging Christ’s authority helps Christians navigate moral complexities and societal pressures while remaining steadfast in faith, as underscored by 1 Corinthians 10:31, which calls us to do all things for the glory of God.

John 14:15, 1 Corinthians 10:31

About 1600 years ago the church was adopted by Rome, millions of pagans flooded its membership. They brought with their pagan culture, their traditions and faith. The result was a thousand years of darkness, ignorance, and idolatry. In our day, Christian religion has been adopted by society. Untold millions have flooded their membership, so that there are churches on nearly every corner in the world. Politicians, entertainers, and famous people all lend their popularity and ideas to the crowd. All of a sudden Jesus and the gospel are socially acceptable. The results are the same; a church that bears no resemblance to the church of the Lord Jesus Christ. "Religion" has become man's chief defense against the true gospel! If there is one place that a man dare not preach the gospel of Gods' sovereign grace, it is in the average church.
