What does the Bible say about salvation by grace alone?

The Bible teaches that salvation is solely by grace through faith in Christ, not by human effort.

Scripture is clear that salvation is a gift of God's grace, not something earned by our works. Ephesians 2:8-9 articulates this beautifully: 'For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.' This underscores the fundamental Reformed position that human control or effort plays no role in our redemption; it is solely the sovereign act of God. Ultimately, salvation glorifies God alone, as it is through His grace that we are able to come to faith in Christ. Any doctrine that suggests otherwise undermines the gospel message.

Ephesians 2:8-9

How do we know God's sovereignty is true?

God's sovereignty is affirmed throughout Scripture, displaying His ultimate authority over all creation.

The sovereignty of God is a core tenet of sovereign grace theology, emphasizing that God is in complete control over all aspects of creation and redemption. Passages like Romans 8:28-30 illustrate this truth: 'And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.' This affirms that God sovereignly orchestrates events for His glory and our good. Moreover, Isaiah 46:9-10 declares, 'For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning.' Such scriptures assure us of His providential hand at work in every detail of our lives. God's sovereignty is not just a doctrine; it is a source of comfort and assurance for believers.

Why is understanding the grace of God important for Christians?

Understanding God's grace is vital as it forms the foundation of our faith and relationship with Him.

Understanding the grace of God is crucial for Christians because it reveals the depth of God's love and mercy towards us. By grasping that we are saved not by our own deeds but through His grace, we cultivate a grateful heart and a right perspective on our worth before God. Romans 3:23-24 states, 'For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.' This highlights that our justification is entirely a work of grace. Additionally, recognizing the sufficiency of Christ's work on the cross liberates us from the burdensome quest for self-righteousness and performance-based acceptance. Thus, grace isn't merely a doctrine; it breathes life into our faith walk and fosters humility and worship.

Romans 3:23-24

What a testimony is, the opposition to, ...
... the Gospel we know and love to preach!
When Christ alone is lifted up, ... and the will of man's cast down,
Vain religion mocks, ... and hates the truth we teach!

Even though they can't agree, with one another's view, ...
... they'll ban together firm against the word.
Fragmented in their own beliefs, ... as liberal as they are, ...
... they will not near permit that which they've heard!

It has always been amazing for me to view such hate, ...
... against salvation by the grace of God alone!
The world of false religion will go to any length, ...
... to pull down our Lord and Savior from His Throne!

The natural man will not allow for the sovereignty of God, ...
... but will instead demand his own will done!
They will not see themselves debased, ... as our Lord is lifted up, ...
... they won't bow down their own will to the Son!

It seems an abstract witness, but one that clearly speaks, ...
... to the spiritually dead condition of a man!
The one who's found his own way, ... and will not even hear, ...
... is Dead to Truth, and cannot understand!

They will not permit a gospel, that looks to Christ alone, ...
... but they love perversions of it, where they share!
They fight for their control somehow, ... demanding their "free will".
Though they differ, ... it is never EVER here!

The common ground they all have, is the control they think they own, ...
... in their choosing to let Jesus have His way!
They actually think His hands are tied, ... and that He has need of them, ...
... to grant Him the power, ... to wash their sins away!

They've actually placed themselves in charge, of His amazing grace, ...
... and when the truth in Christ is preached, they always mock!
It seems an abstract witness, ... but it's one you can depend, ...
... will chime as certain, ... as our Lord's eternal clock!

Amen
