What does the Bible say about nourishing Christians?

The Bible emphasizes the importance of preaching the gospel as nourishment for believers, referring to Christ as the Good Shepherd.

In Scripture, the nourishment Christians need is found in the gospel, which leads them to true life and comfort. This nourishment is likened to the good food provided by the Good Shepherd, who speaks to His sheep through the gospel. Many times, however, instead of delivering the life-giving message of Christ, undershepherds focus on rules and regulations that lead Christians away from grace and into discouragement. When the focus shifts from the gospel to self-righteous performance, the true needs of the sheep are neglected, leading to spiritual starvation.

John 10:11, 2 Timothy 4:2

How do we know the gospel is true?

The truth of the gospel is affirmed through Scripture and its power to provide life and comfort to believers.

The gospel is true not only because it is attested in the Scriptures but also because it produces real change and life in the hearts of believers. When preached faithfully, the gospel resonates with the inner longing for hope and assurance, effectively nourishing believers as they hear the voice of their Shepherd. The consistent theme throughout biblical texts that points to Christ's sufficiency for salvation underscores the truth of the gospel. Moreover, the transformative experience of countless believers throughout history serves as a testament to its truthfulness.

Romans 1:16, 1 Corinthians 15:1-4

Why is spiritual nourishment important for Christians?

Spiritual nourishment is vital for believers as it strengthens their faith and keeps them from discouragement.

Spiritual nourishment through the preaching of the gospel is crucial for the Christian life, as it builds faith and fosters growth in grace. Without proper nourishment, Christians may fall into discouragement or spiritual starvation, becoming susceptible to false teachings rooted in self-righteousness. The gospel, as the true food for believers, empowers them to live out their faith joyfully and confidently, assuring them of their place in God's family. It is through this sustenance that they are reminded of God's love and grace, leading to deeper trust and love for their Savior.

1 Peter 2:2, Ephesians 4:15-16

Christ's sheep everywhere need nourishment in the good food of the gospel. When they hear the gospel preached, they hear the voice of the Good Shepherd which is life and comfort to them. But many undershepherds feed them rules, duties, things they must perform to please God and pass the test of election...The sheep starve and get discouraged, while the self-righteous reprobate goats get fat and promoted in their self-righteousness.
