What does the Bible say about love among Christians?

The Bible emphasizes that love for one another is the defining mark of true discipleship (John 13:35).

In John 13:35, Jesus declares that love for one another is the way by which all men will know that we are His disciples. This love is not mere words or sentiments but is to be expressed in practical deeds and truth, as highlighted in 1 John 3:18. True Christian love reflects the character of Christ and is essential for the unity and witness of the church.

Why is love important for Christians?

Love is fundamental for Christians as it identifies them as Christ's disciples (John 13:35).

Love is vital for Christians because it serves as the visible manifestation of their faith and connection to Christ. As stated in John 13:35, it is through love that others will recognize believers as true disciples of Jesus. This love must go beyond superficial expression and be rooted in genuine actions that demonstrate care and concern for one another. Additionally, it fosters community, reflects God's love, and fulfills the commandment to love our neighbors.

How do we know that love among Christians is genuine?

Genuine love is demonstrated through actions and truth, not just words (1 John 3:18).

Genuine love among Christians is verified by actions that reflect the teachings of Christ rather than mere verbal affirmations. In 1 John 3:18, the Apostle John urges believers to love not just in word or tongue but in deed and truth, suggesting that true love manifests in practicality and authenticity. This principle highlights that the essence of Christian fellowship and community is fueled by love that translates into real support, encouragement, and service to one another.

1 John 3:18

"By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another." (Jn. 13:35)

There is a way our invisible saving connection to Christ becomes visible, manifest to outsiders ("all men"). Christ says, they will know that ye are my disciples if something is manifest among you. Please note that Christ does not say, that all men will know you are my disciples,

A. if you beat on the anti-Arminian drum all the time,
B. If you grill each other endlessly with tests of orthodoxy,
C. If you have endless debates among one another.

No, but by this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have LOVE one to another. (Jn. 13:35).   And this love, ladies and gentlemen, is something very practical:   My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. (1 Jn. 3:18)
