What does the Bible say about cheap grace?

The Bible teaches that God's grace is free for those who recognize their spiritual poverty and inability to earn His favor.

Cheap grace is often misunderstood; while it refers to grace that is seen as without cost, true grace is given freely to us. According to Scripture, we come to God as destitute sinners, recognizing that on our own, we can't earn His everlasting favor. This is explained in passages like Ephesians 2:8-9, which emphasizes that salvation is a gift, not the result of our works, underscoring our complete dependence on God's grace.

How do we know God's grace is truly free?

God's grace is free as it is given to those who cannot afford it, highlighting His mercy and love.

The concept of free grace is central to the Christian faith, particularly within sovereign grace theology. God extends His grace freely to those who are spiritually impoverished, affirming that we cannot buy or earn His favor. This is illustrated in Scripture, such as in Romans 3:23-24, where it states that all have sinned yet are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, showcasing God's love and mercy. Therefore, the truth of free grace lies in the understanding that it is unearned and unmerited, given to those who recognize their need for divine assistance.

Why is grace important for Christians?

Grace is fundamental for Christians as it underpins our relationship with God and the assurance of salvation.

Grace is essential for Christians because it is the foundation upon which our relationship with God is built. Without grace, we would remain in our sin, unable to attain righteousness or reconciliation with God. The New Testament is replete with affirmations of grace’s significance, such as in 2 Corinthians 12:9, where Paul states, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' This highlights that grace empowers believers, not only for salvation but also for living a life honoring to God. Thus, understanding and embracing grace brings profound assurance and motivation for obedience in the Christian life.

"Cheap grace" is an expression, coined by Lordship legalists. The truth is it's not only cheap, it is totally free for us, poor in spirit, destitute sinners, otherwise we would never ever be able to buy it, seeing we don't have what it takes to purchase God's everlasting favor...
