What does the Bible say about assurance of salvation?

The Bible assures believers that salvation is based on Christ's righteousness, not our own performance.

The assurance of salvation is a fundamental truth found throughout Scripture, emphasizing that a believer's confidence rests in the finished work of Christ rather than their own feelings or performance. Passages such as Romans 3:22 highlight that righteousness from God is available to all who believe, reinforcing that it is not by individual merit but by faith in Christ that we are saved. In Ephesians 1:6, believers are reminded that they are accepted in the beloved, offering a profound sense of security and belonging, giving us full assurance of eternal life.

This truth is crucial for Christians as it liberates us from the despair of self-trust and leads to a more vibrant and joyful faith. Instead of measuring our righteousness by fluctuating feelings or performance, we can anchor our hope in Christ’s steadfast love and accomplished work on the cross. This understanding encourages believers to rest in the assurance that they are complete in Christ, as stated in Colossians 2:10, and it results in a life empowered by grace and gratitude.

Why is Christ's righteousness important for Christians?

Christ's righteousness is vital as it is the basis for our justification and acceptance before God.

The righteousness of Christ is of utmost importance for Christians because it serves as the sole basis for our justification before God. As Romans 5:1 indicates, being justified by faith allows us to have peace with God, and this peace is rooted in Christ’s perfect righteousness, not our imperfect efforts. Without His righteousness, we would remain under condemnation due to our sin, but through faith in Him, we are declared righteous. This truth is foundational to understanding the Gospel and the assurance it provides.

Moreover, understanding that we are 'complete in Christ' (Colossians 2:10) enables believers to live boldly in their Christian walk. It removes the burden of striving for acceptance through personal merit and allows for growth in sanctification that comes from gratitude and love. Therefore, Christ's righteousness not only secures our right standing before God but also transforms how we approach our daily living and relationship with Him, leading to a life characterized by joy, peace, and unwavering hope.

How do we know we are complete in Christ?

Scripture teaches that believers are complete in Christ due to His sufficient grace and redemptive work.

The assurance of being complete in Christ is rooted firmly in Scripture, particularly in passages like Colossians 2:10, which states that in Him we have been made complete. This completeness refers not only to our standing before God but also to the sufficiency of Christ’s work in redeeming us from sin and empowering us for godly living. The fullness of God is accessible to the believer because we are united with Christ through faith, allowing us to partake in His righteousness, life, and promises.

Furthermore, understanding our completeness in Christ releases us from the bondage of performance-based acceptance, fostering a deeper relationship with God based on trust rather than fear or obligation. This truth motivates believers to live in light of their identity in Christ, prompting growth in holiness as a response to His love and grace. Thus, knowing we are complete in Him is not just a doctrinal statement but a transformative truth that affects the entirety of our Christian walk.

Colossians 2:10

Today, I am cheered by the thought that being a Christian isn't based on my feelings, my character or even on my performance or I would be a total failure and doomed to destruction. I would have no assurance of my salvation and would be the most miserable of all men. As it stands, Christ is my righteousness and my salvation and I can rest fully, by faith, that I am saved and that there is a place in heaven for me when I depart this life. I have full assurance of my salvation because of what Christ has done on my behalf and, not only am I complete in Christ but I am accepted in the beloved.  I cannot think of any better news than that!
