What does the Bible say about trusting in riches?

The Bible warns against trusting in riches, emphasizing that true wealth comes through faith in Christ.

Scripture teaches that riches are fleeting and ultimately cannot secure one's salvation or standing before God. In 1 Peter 1:18-19, it is made clear that we were not redeemed with perishable things, such as silver and gold, but with the precious blood of Christ. Trusting in earthly wealth can lead to deception, as true riches are found in our relationship with God and our identity as heirs with Christ. The emphasis is on faith and righteousness leading the way, not material possessions.

1 Peter 1:18-19, Romans 8:17

How do we know our faith is more valuable than riches?

Our faith, anchored in Christ's sacrifice, is the true source of wealth that lasts for eternity.

The value of faith over riches is illuminated through the redemptive work of Christ. Ambrose emphasizes that Christ became poor for our sake so that we, through His poverty, might be enriched. This profound truth demonstrates that spiritual wealth, which is derived from faith, lasts beyond this life and cannot be lost as earthly possessions can. Furthermore, the Christian faith advocates for a perspective that elevates the humble and the poor, reminding us that God hears the cries of those in need and that they, too, are rich in faith.

2 Corinthians 8:9, James 2:5

Why is despising the poor seen as a sin in the Bible?

Despising the poor contradicts the Gospel's message of grace and the example of Christ.

The Bible teaches that all individuals are created in the image of God and deserving of dignity and respect, regardless of their economic status. When we despise the poor, we not only violate the command to love our neighbor, but we also undermine the message of the Gospel, which reveals how Christ, in His richness, chose to embrace poverty for our salvation. In Matthew 25:40, Jesus teaches that whatever we do to the least of these, we do to Him. Therefore, our treatment of the poor reflects our understanding of grace and the inclusivity of God's kingdom.

Matthew 25:40, Proverbs 14:31

Do not trust in riches; for all such things are left here, faith alone will accompany you. And righteousness indeed will go with you if faith has led the way. Why do riches entice you ? Ye were not redeemed with gold and silver, with possessions, or silk garments, from your vain conversation, but with the precious Blood of Christ.  He then is rich who is an heir of God, a joint heir with Christ. Despise not the poor man, he has made you rich. This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him.  Do not reject a poor man, Christ when He was rich became poor, and became poor because of you, that by His poverty He might make you rich. Do not then as though rich exalt yourself, He sent forth His apostles without money, (Ambrose, Letter 63, par. 87)
