Joseph Harrald was one of Pastor Charles Spurgeon's most faithful friends, trusted brother, and secretary. On several occasions he occupied Spurgeon's pulpit in his absence, carefully edited his sermons for publication, and to him was given the responsibility to further Spurgeon's ministry after his death, and to help Spurgeon's widow. In tribute to this mostly unknown laborer, Harwood Field wrote: “He was always behind the curtain, as it were. He did the work, yet he had no recognition for it. Only our Lord, who sees in secret, could know and estimate the valuable service of this most devoted laborer in the harvest field.”
