Beckett expounds on the doctrine of God's sovereign grace in salvation, emphasizing that the gospel operates entirely apart from human merit or effort. Drawing from Romans 3:11, Ephesians 1:3-6, and 2 Timothy 1:9-10, she argues that God's election of His people occurred before the foundation of the world based solely on His purpose and pleasure, not human works. Central to her argument is Christ's substitutionary atonement—His perfect obedience, death for the chosen, and the imputation of His righteousness to believers (2 Corinthians 5:21)—which secures the eternal salvation of all those given to Him by the Father (John 10:28-29). Beckett concludes that salvation is wholly God's work through His free grace, with believers receiving faith itself as a gift to apprehend the gospel truth that liberates them.

What does the Bible say about predestination?

The Bible affirms that God chose a people for Himself before the foundation of the world, predestining them for adoption as His children.

The concept of predestination is articulated in several passages of Scripture that emphasize God's sovereign choice and purpose. Ephesians 1:4-5 states, 'He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ according to the good pleasure of His will.' This demonstrates that God's decision to save individuals is rooted not in their actions but solely in His will and grace. Moreover, 2 Timothy 1:9 reinforces this by declaring that God has called us not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began. Therefore, predestination serves to highlight the glory of God's grace and mercy in salvation.

Ephesians 1:4-5, 2 Timothy 1:9

How do we know the gospel of grace is true?

The gospel of grace is affirmed in Scripture, emphasizing that salvation is by grace through faith, as evidenced by God's promises and fulfilled in Christ.

The truth of the gospel of grace rests on its clear proclamation throughout the Bible. For instance, Ephesians 2:8-9 states, 'For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.' This foundational truth underscores that salvation is entirely the work of God and not dependent on human merit. Moreover, the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ validate this gospel as He bore the sin of His people, thus securing their salvation. As noted in John 10:15, Christ says, 'I lay down My life for the sheep,' demonstrating His commitment to saving those given to Him by the Father. Thus, the gospel's truth is encapsulated in God's unchanging word and the historic actions of Christ.

Ephesians 2:8-9, John 10:15

Why is grace important for Christians?

Grace is central to the Christian faith as it underscores God's unmerited favor and the foundation of salvation through faith in Christ.

Grace is vital for Christians because it is through grace that we receive salvation and reconciliation with God. Ephesians 2:4-5 highlights this beautifully, stating, 'But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.' This passage reinforces that our salvation is not of our own doing but a direct result of God's mercy and grace. Furthermore, recognizing grace leads to a life of gratitude, obedience, and worship. When Christians understand that salvation is wholly God's work, it fosters humility, a deep sense of reliance on Him, and a motivation to share this good news with others.

Ephesians 2:4-5, John 10:28

The gospel comes in power and in truth; it is a feast to the heart that has been prepared by the Holy Spirit because man is dead in sin and cannot of himself come to God in any way. “There is none who understands, there is none who seeks after God.” (Romans 3:11). Jesus told His disciples that it was easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven and their response;

“Who then can be saved? But Jesus looked at them and said to them‘With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:25, 26)

God chose a people for Himself before the foundation of the world and His choosing was not based on anything that they did but upon His purpose and for His glory alone. The children of God are those who believe in His name and who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God (John 1:12b, 13)

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved” (Ephesians 1:3-6)

“who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus, before time began, but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” (2 Timothy 1: 9, 10)

“And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins……but God who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace ye have been saved) (Eph 2: 1,4)

God sent Christ to the earth to save those chosen by Him. Christ humbled Himself and by His perfect obedience unto death He established a perfect righteousness and died for those the Father had given Him.

“As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep” (John 10:15)

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life…..(John 10: 27, 28a)

“as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him, and this is eternal life that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” (John 17: 2, 3)

The sin of those He died for was laid upon Him and His perfect righteousness was imputed to them, through which they are wholly acceptable unto God, and this is the will of God that none shall perish, not a single one.

“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21)

“And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.” (Ephesians 5:2)

.."and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father has given them to me……..” (John 10: 28 b….)

This is the gospel of Grace, the gospel preached by Paul, the gospel that comes in Truth, in power and the gospel that we are given faith to believe. This is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. This is the gospel that reveals man cannot fulfill any condition for his own salvation and has no part in it, but that it truly is ALL of God and only by His free Grace. God reveals Himself to us in Truth, the Truth of His Gospel and Jesus tell us "and you shall know the Truth and the Truth shall make you free……(John 8:32).
