Can the Elect be Edified by Reading SOME Things From Those Who Get the Gospel Wrong?
by David Bishop

Someone asks, can the elect be edified by reading anything from those who get the Gospel wrong?

Titus 1:10-13
10 For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party. 11 They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach. 12 One of the Cretans, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13 This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith

Epimenides was a Greek pagan and philosopher. He is known for the mathematical equation, "liar's paradox." If all Cretans are liars, and Epimenides is a Cretan, then Epimenides is lying when he says all Cretans are liars.

Acts 17:26-28
26 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, 28 for
“‘In him we live and move and have our being’;
as even some of your own poets have said,
“‘For we are indeed his offspring.’

Aratus was a Greek poet. His major work of fame is entitled, "Phaenomena."

Let us begin with Zeus, whom we mortals never leave unspoken.
For every street, every market-place is full of Zeus.
Even the sea and the harbour are full of this deity.
Everywhere everyone is indebted to Zeus.
For we are indeed his offspring.
--- Phaenomena, 1-5

Jude 1:14 And about these also Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied, saying, "Behold, the Lord came with many thousands of His holy ones"

Enoch 1:9
And behold! He cometh with ten thousands of His holy ones
To execute judgement upon all,
And to destroy all the ungodly:
And to convict all flesh
Of all the works of their ungodliness which they have ungodly committed
And of all the hard things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.

The book of Enoch is found only in the Apocrypha.

Have you, gospel believer, ever been edified by a cookbook? By a rousing rock song? By a movie? By a ripping yarn of a story book?

Edify - to instruct or benefit, to uplift.

So you ask, can the elect be edified by reading SOME things from those who get the Gospel wrong? Paul and Jude sure thought so.
