What does the Bible say about affliction?

Answered in 4 sources

The Bible teaches that afflictions are a means through which God sanctifies and strengthens believers.

Affliction according to Scripture is often viewed as a tool used by God to refine and purify His people. In 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, Paul speaks of God as the source of all comfort, who comforts us in our tribulations so that we can extend that comfort to others. Afflictions lead us to a more profound appreciation of God’s grace and mercy, compelling us to rely on His sufficiency and providence amid our weaknesses. As John Newton emphasizes in his letter, our growth in faith is significantly influenced by the blessings God grants through our afflictions, leading to a deeper trust in His promises and His ability to provide comfort and support.
