How do we know repentance is genuine?

Answered in 7 sources

Genuine repentance is evidenced by a change of mind and behavior that aligns with faith in Christ and results in fruits of righteousness.

John the Baptist emphasizes in Luke 3 that belief in Christ must lead to a genuine change in life. This change involves a rejection of false religion and the pursuit of God’s righteousness. Where true repentance exists, it naturally produces good fruits—actions that align with one's faith. The transformation is not merely doctrinal but also behavioral, as seen in a believer's conduct towards others. If a person claims to repent but continues in their old sins, their repentance cannot be considered true. Thus, a life that exhibits honesty, charity, and contentment proves the authenticity of one's repentance.
