How do we know spiritual pride is a problem for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

Spiritual pride leads to a false self-assurance and can diminish one's effective relationship with God, as seen in Scripture.

Spiritual pride is a significant issue for Christians, as it can lead one to view themselves favorably in light of their knowledge and grace, rather than recognizing their dependence on God. The Bible warns that pride goes before destruction (Proverbs 16:18), and spiritual pride, in particular, blinds believers to their true condition before God. In 1 Corinthians 4:7, Paul poses a rhetorical question, emphasizing that what we have received from God should lead to the acknowledgment of our reliance on Him, not to boasting.

Additionally, Paul himself recognized how spiritual pride could lead to a sense of superiority. He mentions his own experiences with a thorn in the flesh, which was given to keep him humble (2 Corinthians 12:7). It serves as a reminder that, while one may attain knowledge and grace, continual dependence on God's mercy and grace is essential to maintain a healthy spiritual life. The consequences of spiritual pride ultimately lead to a deteriorating relationship with God, which emphasizes the need for humility and vigilance.
