What does the Bible say about affliction and trials?

Answered in 2 sources

The Bible reveals that affliction and trials are used by God to bring us closer to Him and refine our character.

Hebrews 12:5-11 illustrates that God disciplines those He loves, which aligns with the understanding that afflictions serve a purpose in the life of a believer. Afflictions are designed to nip our waywardness in the bud and draw us back to a close relationship with our Heavenly Father. As it states in Psalm 119:67, 'Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word,' indicating that trials often lead us back to God’s commandments and decrees.

Additionally, the metaphor of a shepherd’s black dog chasing after sheep highlights how difficulties can guide us back to the shepherd, our Lord. The trials and struggles we face are not without purpose; they are meant to mold us into better reflections of Christ. When we experience such chastisement, it is a reminder that God’s wisdom surpasses our understanding, and He knows what is ultimately for our good.
