What does the Bible say about Isaac as a type of Christ?

Answered in 2 sources

The Bible presents Isaac as a foreshadowing of Christ, illustrating the concept of substitutionary sacrifice and divine deliverance.

In Scripture, Isaac is often seen as a type of our Lord Jesus Christ. Both Isaac and Jesus have births that were announced by angels and were long-awaited. Isaac was the child of promise, just as Jesus is the fulfillment of God's promise. The miraculous elements of their births—Isaac's given to a barren Sarah and Jesus's virgin birth—show that both were beyond the ordinary course of nature. Additionally, Isaac, being Abraham's heir, symbolizes Jesus, who is the heir of all promises.

Isaac's carrying of the wood up the mountain parallels Jesus carrying His cross to Golgotha. Both willingly accepted their roles in fulfilling God's plan. Isaac was laid upon the wood, signifying the impending sacrifice, while Jesus ultimately fulfilled this in His own sacrificial death. However, in the climax of their respective stories, Isaac did not die because God provided a ram as a substitute, mirroring Jesus, the Lamb of God, who did die for our sins. The resurrection theme is apparent as well; Isaac was delivered on the third day and returned to his father's house, akin to Christ's resurrection and return to the Father.
