I'm looking out and seeing several
faces of those who met with us at Petals 27 years ago, and just
rejoicing that the Lord has kept us all of these years. Well, Grace, you were a baby.
No, you weren't. You weren't born. No, no. You were a baby when we were
building the other building. Next Sunday will be our anniversary,
so we'll have lunch together after the service. One of the thrills of my soul
as pastor is on Wednesday nights, we have several young families
that come and bring their children. And to watch those kids after
the service on Wednesday night playing in the church, it just
warms my heart. And so thankful for them. And I'm thankful for their parents
that are faithful to have them here. And this morning is special
in that in that Aria is here for her very first time. And
there she is. So I want us to have a word of
prayer for Aria before we begin, okay? Let's pray together. Our
merciful heavenly father, we thank you for the gift of children
that you've given to our fellowship and to our young families. And
Lord, we pray for your mercy and grace. We pray that you would
give them ears to hear. We pray that you'd be pleased.
In your time. To bring them to faith in Christ.
We pray, especially this morning for Aria being her first time
in worship. Lord, that it would be the first
of many and that your hand of protection and mercy and grace
will be upon her and. Lord, that as she is raised in
the nurture and admonition of the Lord, that being trained
in the way that she should go, that she would not depart from
it. We ask it in Christ's name, amen. Adam's gonna come lead us in
the hymn on the back of your bulletin. Let's stand together. "'Tis not that I did choose thee,
for, Lord, that could not be. This heart would still refuse
thee, hadst thou not chosen me. Thou from the sin that stained
me hast cleansed and set me free. Of old Thou hast ordained me
that I should live to Thee. Your love had no beginning, no
cause in me was found. That you should choose to save
me, a sinner strongly bound. But grace not earned or sought
for, was purposed for my soul. For me salvation wrought for,
Christ paid the dreadful toll. was sovereign mercy called me
and taught my opening mind. The world had else enthralled
me to heavenly glories blind. My heart owns none before Thee,
for Thy rich grace I thirst. This knowing, if I loved Thee,
Thou must have loved me first. Good morning, everyone. For our
call to worship, let's turn to 1 Peter, chapter 5. 1 Peter,
chapter 5. And we'll go to verse 5. 1 Peter, chapter 5, verse
5. Likewise, ye younger, submit
yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one
to another, and be clothed with humility, for God resisteth the
proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore
under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due
time, casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you. Our Father, our Lord, and our
God, Lord, we have come here to hear you and to set all things
aside, Lord, and to cast our care upon you. And God, you are
great, and you are our creator, our redeemer, and the sustainer,
and the first cause of all things, and you are the only one we can
turn to, Lord. We thank you for the grace and
your good spirit that urges us to your throne, God, to cast
our care on you. Lord, we need you to make our
worship acceptable. We want, Lord, the faith to see
your son coming into this world and humbling himself and you
exalting him in due time, Lord. We thank you for any understanding
of that that you've given, God. Especially for our children,
as Greg prayed, Lord, we need your mercy and grace as parents,
and they need it, Lord. Oh, please be with us here today,
and be in our hearts, Lord. Give us more faith. In your son's
name we ask these things, amen. Let's turn in our spiral bound
hymnal to hymn number seven, and we'll stand together and
sing that one. The head that once was crowned
with thorns is crowned with glory now. A royal diadem adorns the
mighty victor's brow. ? The highest place that heaven
affords ? ? Belongs to Him by night ? ? The King of kings and
Lord of lords ? ? And heaven's eternal light ? ? The joy of
all who dwell above ? ? The joy of all below ? To whom he manifests
his love and grants his name to know. To them the cross with all its
shame, with all its grace is given. Their name an everlasting
name, their joy the joy of heaven. Recede it, please. Let's open our Bibles to 1 Samuel
17. 1 Samuel 17. It's a long chapter, 58 verses
to be exact. I will encourage you to read
the entire story at another time. We'll look at selective verses
this morning. A very familiar story. story
of David and Goliath. Maybe one of the most familiar
stories in the world among believers and unbelievers, the story of
David and Goliath. It is also the most misunderstood
story in the Bible. How does the world look at the
story of David and Goliath? David, the underdog, facing his
giants in faith and courage, slaying the giant. And World uses this story to
motivate the underdog to face the challenges of life. I've titled this message, Goliath,
the Underdog. Goliath, the underdog. David's not the underdog in this
story. David's a picture of the Lord
Jesus Christ. And all the giants that you and
I face were slain by him. And they were of no, they were of no challenge. They
were no threat to him. They were of no trouble for him
to slay them. You and I are pictured in this
story by Saul and David's brothers who are literally shaking in
their boots, not with the courage to go out and face this 10-foot
tall giant of a man. David says, who is this uncircumcised
Philistine that he would threaten the God of Israel? Who's the underdog here? David
is not is not afraid of this giant. David believes that God
is going to deliver him. He says that. In our story, David makes some
statements. Look at verse 45. Look at verse
45. Then David said to the Philistine,
Thou comest to me with sword and with spear and with a shield,
and I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God
of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defiled. This day will
the Lord deliver thee into my hand, and I will smite thee and
take thine head from thee, and I will give the carcass of the
host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air,
to the wild beast of the earth, that all the earth may know that
there is a God in Israel." Here's the picture. You and I have some giants that
we are no match for. We're gonna consider Five of
them. And the battle's been set. And the army of Israel is on
one mountain and the army of the Philistines is on the other.
And 40 days, that's significant. 40 is a generation. The children of Israel were 40
years in the wilderness. It is a symbol of a life of trials
and troubles. 40 days, the Lord Jesus was in
the wilderness being tempted of the devil. 40 days was the
deluge that came and destroyed the earth in days of Noah. And
so the number 40 is significant here. And in our story, the Lord
tells us that 40 days, every day for 40 days, that Goliath
would come down off of the mountain into the valley between the two
mountains. This is where the battles fought.
You and I, you and I walk. Psalm 23, when the scripture,
when David said, though I walk through the valley of the shadow
of death. Now we read those verses oftentimes
at a funeral. But you and I right now are walking
in our 40 years in this world, in this wilderness, waiting to
be ushered into the promised land. We are walking through
the valley of the shadow of death. This world is a world of death
and there are giants that are threatening us and we are unable
to go down into the valley Except, what did David say in Psalm 23? Though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. Why? Because thou
art with me, thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. This story tells us about how
David was sent by his father to take bread to his brethren
who were in the battle. What a picture, what
a picture. Here we are confronted every
day of our lives with giants that are impossible for us. And the father sends his son
to those who are afraid. And he brings with him bread
to feed them and to sustain them and to fight the battle for them.
In this story, the scripture says the battle is not yours,
it's the Lord's. And so the Lord Jesus left his
rightful place in heaven and He came into this world as the
bread of life and gave himself for the children of God and for
his brethren. That's who David brought the
bread for. Jesse laid his ass with all sorts
of provisions and said, take these to your brethren to sustain
them in the battle. how the Lord Jesus has come into
this world in order to bring to us the bread of life which
is nothing short of himself. He is the bread that came down
from heaven and he is the one that sustains us and enables
us in this battle. The other thing we see in this
conflict is that Goliath, when he came down, he came down as
a representative. He said, there's no reason for
all of us to die. You send one man to fight against
me. And whichever wins, wins for
the entire army. And we know how the story goes. Saul wanted David to put on his
armor. And David said, I've not tried
it. I've not tried that armor. It's not proven to me. That armor
represents the arm of flesh. And David is just saying, I can't
fight with the arm of flesh. I've got to fight with what's
been proven, what's been tested. And what's been tested is the
strength of God because God enabled me. to deliver the sheep in the
flock from the paw of the bear and the paw of the lion, and
he will deliver this Philistine in the same way. And so we see
a picture of the Lord Jesus who did not come. It's not by might
nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord. The Lord Jesus
Christ fought the battle in the spirit of God, and he defeated
the enemy in God's spirit, a spirit that had been tried a spirit
that had been proven. And I love what we see David
running toward Goliath. David and Goliath are at some
distance from one another in this valley. And David begins
to twirl his sling and gets in a full bore run toward Goliath. Scripture tells us that the Lord
Jesus Christ set his face as a flint toward Jerusalem. He
didn't hesitate. He did not hesitate to do what
he came to do to redeem his people. Everything in his life was set
for that cross. And when it wasn't his time to
go to the cross, he said, the time is not yet. And when the
time was, the time was and he ran. He went willingly to the
cross, laid down his life for his sheep. And I love the fact
that Goliath wasn't even holding his own. You know, I thought,
well, maybe if Goliath was holding his own shield, he would have
seen the stone coming and could have lifted his shield in time
to deflect it. But the scripture says that Goliath
wasn't carrying a shield. He had a shield bearer. Now,
what is the shield? Well, the scripture tells us
it's the shield of faith. And what do we have a picture
of here? A man trusting in someone else's
faith. You see, someone else's faith
is not sufficient for you. You've got to have your own faith.
No man can live on someone else's faith. Is someone else carrying
your shield for you? They're not gonna see the danger.
They're not gonna see it coming. They're not gonna be able to
protect you. You got to have your own faith. So many, so many
things in this story that reminds us of what the Lord Jesus has
done in defeating our enemy. After Goliath fell to the ground,
with a stone in his forehead. Scripture says that David took
Goliath's sword. He took Goliath's sword and he
cut Goliath's head off with his own sword. Now what is the sword? Well, the sword is likened in
the scriptures to our tongue and the score to the spirit is
the word of God. And when the Lord Jesus is coming
in the day of judgment, we see his tongue as a flaming sword. It is the words that are spoken. And the scripture says, by your
word, you shall be justified. And by your word, you shall be
condemned. You see, the unbeliever is going
to be killed by his own sword. by his own words. So what words
are you speaking about preacher? What words do you speak concerning
the Lord Jesus Christ? Is he the son of God? Is he the
sovereign, omnipotent, successful savior of sinners? Is that who
he is? Is he the Christ, the anointed
one? The one that actually completely
accomplished the work that the Father came him to do, gave him
to do? Is he all your hope and salvation,
all your righteousness and all of your justification before
God? Or do you think that maybe you need something other than
Christ or something in addition to Christ? Or is Christ all? You see, what we say about the
Lord Jesus Christ, the words that we speak about him, are
the words by which we will be judged or by the words of which
we will be justified. And the unbeliever will have
his head taken off by his own words. 1 Corinthians chapter 10 verse
3. Second Corinthians, I'm sorry,
chapter 10 verse 3 says, though we walk after the flesh or in
the flesh, we do not war after the flesh. For the weapons of
our warfare are not carnal, they're not fleshly. We can't use Saul's
armor. We can't use the arm of flesh.
We can't use our determination and our strength and our free
will and our good works in order to defeat the giant. The weapons of our warfare are
not carnal. They're not fleshly. I don't
possess them, but they are mighty through God to the pulling down
of strongholds. Let's turn to that passage, 2
Corinthians chapter 10. or chapter, yeah, 2 Corinthians
chapter 10. We'll begin reading in verse
three. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after
the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare
are not carnal, but mighty, powerful through God to the pulling down
of these giants, these strongholds, casting down imaginations and
every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge
of God and bringing into captivity every thought. Please take notice of those last
words. to the obedience of Christ. We're not defeating our giants
and casting down our imaginations and getting the victory in the
warfare by our determination or by our faithfulness or by
our obedience. Matter of fact, I think every
other paraphrase of the Bible says that in this verse. It doesn't
say to the obedience of Christ, it says to your obedience in
Christ. Is that how you're going to defeat
your giants? By your obedience? By your faithfulness? You see, Goliath was the underdog. David's Christ. You and I are being threatened
by a giant that we can't possibly defeat. I mentioned earlier that I was
going to speak of five giants David had
five stones in his bag and five in the Bible is a number for
grace. And there in do we defeat our giants by God's grace, by
God's grace. Turn with me to Zachariah. Chapter 11. I'm sorry, chapter 4. Chapter
4. Zechariah chapter 4. Verse 7. Who art thou? O great mountain,
who art thou? It's what David said to Goliath.
Who is this uncircumcised Philistine? You come against us with sword
and shield and spear. I come to you in the name of
the God of Israel. You're going to fall. You're so proud. I mean, Goliath is 10 feet tall
and his armor, the Bible says his armor weighed 350 pounds,
just the coat that he had on, coat of mail. The tip of his spear was 18 pounds
of brass. What are we going to do against
such a giant? And here's what David, here's what the Lord Jesus
says to that mountain. Who art thou, O mountain? Before Zerubbabel. Now Zerubbabel
here is the one who brought the children of Israel from Babylon
back to Israel to rebuild the temple. But he certainly is a
picture of the Lord Jesus Christ for his name translated means
born in Babylon. And the Lord Jesus Christ was
born in this world in order to redeem his people by his obedience
and by his death. He is our David. He's the only
one that can slay the giant. Who are you, O giant, before
Zerubbabel, before the great king? Thou shalt become a plain. Now
what is a mountain? A mountain is that which separates
us from God. The Lord said if we had faith
as a mustard seed, we could say unto this mountain, be thou removed
and be cast into the sea. And so a mountain is a barrier
between us and God. What are the barriers that you
and I have that we can't defeat? Who are the giants that we can't
conquer? And the scripture says, they're
nothing to Zerubbabel. They're nothing to David. They're
nothing to Christ. He'll fight the battle. He'll
defeat the enemy. He'll remove the mountains. How? By His obedience. By His obedience. And it'll become a plain. And He shall bring forth the
headstone thereof with shoutings and cryings, grace, grace unto
it. There it is. It's all of grace. salvation's all of grace not
of works lest any man should boast not of my obedience not
of my strength not of my power by his grace my sin continues
to abound but where sin abounds grace does much more abound here's
my hope My hope is that Zerubbabel will make those mountains that
separate me from God as a plane. My hope is that my David will
run into battle and that against all apparent odds in the flesh,
he will defeat the enemy and cut off his head with his own
sword. And that's exactly what the Lord Jesus did when he came
into this world. And without him, Without him,
we are facing a giant and we've got a mountain between us and
God that cannot be moved. And with him, with him, who are
you against? Cerebral. Verse eight. Zechariah chapter
four, moreover, the word of the Lord came unto me saying, the
hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house
and his hand shall also finish it. And thou shalt know that
the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto you. The father, Jesse sent
David to his brethren with bread. You're gonna know that my father
sent me. He sent me. to do a work for
you that you could not do for yourself, to defeat an enemy
that would otherwise overthrow you, to remove a mountain that
otherwise would stand firm and separate you from God. But the One who laid the foundation,
He's going to finish it. And that's exactly what He did
when the Lord Jesus Christ bowed His head on Calvary's cross and
cried, it is finished. It is finished. Father into thy
hands, I commend my spirit. He accomplished the work of redemption. He removed the mountain. He defeated
the giant. What's it look like right now?
What's your life look like? What does my life look like?
What does this church look like? It looks like a pretty small
thing. We're talking about eternal matters here. We're talking about
things that explain the purpose for everything. And who in the
world would listen to us or come here or think about these things?
as if they were, as if they had eternal consequences, as if they
were the most important things happening in the world today.
No one would. Why? Because the world despises
the day of small things. Just like they despise the Lord
Jesus Christ. The Galilean. He saved others,
let him save himself. They said, well he's He's the
son of Beelzebub. They spat on him and they rejected
him. Just as you and I would do apart
from God's grace, there was no beauty in him that we would desire
him till God makes him beautiful in our sight. Oh Lord, I've got
some. Look at verse 10. For who hath
despised the day of small things? For they shall rejoice and shall
see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven. They are the eyes of the Lord,
which run to and fro through the old earth." The eyes of God
running to and fro through the old earth, looking for those who are afraid of their Goliaths. What do you and I have to be
afraid of? Who are the giants that we must face or that someone
must defeat for us? Well, the first is the curse
of the law. The curse of the law. Now the law itself is just
and holy and good. And David said, I love thy law
and we love God's law. Problem is we can't keep it. Cursed is everyone that continueth
not to do all that is written in the law." You see, the wrath
of God is coming against those who have violated God's law.
And that's what sin is. Sin is a violation of God's law. And all you and I have ever done
is violate God's law. We've never been able to keep
one letter of God's law. And the Lord Jesus Christ said,
I did not come to destroy the law. I came to fulfill it. He crossed every T and dotted
every I. He satisfied all the demands
of God's holy law. So that cursed is everyone that
hangeth upon a tree. The Lord Jesus Christ received
the curse of the law when God made him to be sin for us. God poured out the full wrath
of the curse of the law. The justice of God was poured
out on Calvary's cross. And the Lord Jesus Christ drank
that cup dry. He drank damnation dry down to
its bitter dregs. and he put away the curse of
the law by satisfying that curse in the sacrifice of himself.
You see, this is a giant that the world doesn't even know exist.
The curse of the law is real. He's real. And God's not going to be satisfied
until justice is executed fully. Oh, child of God, aren't you
thankful that God the Father saw the travail of his son Saul
and he said, I'm satisfied. Curse of the law has been fulfilled. We need to be afraid of the wrath
of God outside of Christ. We need to know that there is
a giant that will overwhelm us and that will defeat us. David
said to Saul in our story, when Saul
tried to get him to put on his armor, he said, no, he said,
that's not tried, it's not proven, that's the arm of flesh, I've
got to go in the spirit of God and I've got to do what God has
already shown to me works. And then he gave him two examples.
He said, when I was keeping the sheep, a lion came in and I delivered
the sheep from the paw of the lion. And then a bear came in
and I delivered the sheep from the paw of the bear. By the power
of God, I did that. And just as God enabled me to
deliver the sheep from the lion and from the bear, so he will
deliver this Philistine into my hand. Now, what do the lion
and the bear represent? Well, Jeff, you read it in 1
Peter chapter 5, the very next verse says that Satan is as a
roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. And here's what Amos
said. Amos said that the unbeliever
is as a man who escaped the jaws of a lion only to run into a
bear. Now here's a picture of those
who think, well you know, I've conquered the temptations of
the devil and I'm living my life in a virtuous way and I'm doing
what's right and I'm trusting that God's going to reward me
and favor me with his merit for my good life, for my good works. Oh, you may have escaped the
jaws of a lion. But you run yourself right into the paws of a bear.
And what is that bear? Well, in Isaiah chapter 59 it
says, we roar like a bear for there is no judgment and our
transgression is multitude against us. What is the transgression? Transgression is against the
law. The bear is a picture of the law. And we might, in this
world, be able to escape some of the pitfalls of sin that Satan
would put before us in this world. But there's a bear to be met.
You escape the jaws of a lion and you run right into the mouth
of a bear. Only the Lord Jesus Christ can
deliver us. The bear is the curse of the
law. It is the wrath of God. It is God's perfect holiness
demanding justice for the violation and transgression of his law,
which you and I have done. And the Lord Jesus Christ, when he bore our sins in his
body upon that tree, He slew that bear. He slew that
giant. And he got the victory for all
of Israel. One man. One man got the victory
for all of Israel. It's another giant that you and
I have to deal with. Sin. Sin. You deal with it every day, don't
you? David said, my sin is ever before
me. A man might have the power of
will and determination to resist the practice of sin. But that's not the problem we
have. We commit acts of sin because
we're sinners. We're not sinners because we
sin. Sin is a matter of the heart. The pride, the self-righteousness,
the unbelief, the coldness of heart, the distractions of this
world and the worldliness of our, these are all the things
that, you see, we've never been able to have, here's what the
law of God requires, and sin is falling short of the glory
of God, and here's what the law of God requires, to love the
Lord your God with all of your heart and all of your mind and
all of your soul all of the time. And you and I have never been
able to do that for a moment. or sinners, and that sin must
be paid for. Turn with me to Romans chapter
eight. Romans chapter eight. Look with me at verse three. For what the law could not do,
and that it was weak through the flesh. God sending his own
son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin condemned sin
in the flesh that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled
in us who walk not after the flesh but after the spirit. What
is it to walk after the spirit? is to look in faith to the Lord
Jesus Christ as the one who slew that giant and the only one that's
able to. Thirdly, the giant that the Lord
Jesus defeated the one that he slew in that valley, the Goliath that was no match
for him, was our flesh. Our flesh. Not only was the curse
of the law and sin, but it was our flesh. Paul said, in me that is in my
flesh. That is in my carnal nature dwelleth
no good thing. My flesh lusteth against the
spirit and my spirit lusteth against my flesh so that they
are contrary one to the other and I cannot do the things that
I would do. We live in a body of flesh. We just read it in Romans chapter
8, what the law could not do and that it was weak through
the flesh. Christ in the likeness of sinful
flesh and for sin died in the flesh. He bore our sins in his
body upon that tree. He gave his body as a sacrifice
for our sins. He shed his precious blood in
order to put away the sins of our flesh. And he defeated that giant. Turn to me, if you will, to 1
John chapter 2. These are giants that you and I cannot defeat. The curse of the law, sin, the
flesh, the world. Oh, the world and all that is
in the world. The Lord said, in this world
you shall have tribulations, but be of good cheer. I have
overcome the world. The Lord Jesus Christ was in
the world, but he was not of the world. 1 John chapter 2, we're not talking
about the created world. We're not even talking about
the people of the world. We're talking about the values
of this world, the philosophy of this world, the religions
of this world, the righteousness of this world. Here's how the
Lord defines it. Look at 1 John chapter 2 at verse
At verse 15, love not the world, neither the things that are in
the world. If any man loved the world, the
love of the Father is not in him, for all that is in the world,
the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of
life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. Lust of the flesh, been able
to defeat that giant? That has to do with all the pleasures
that the flesh craves every day. The lust of the eyes? That has
to do with our need to have the eyes of others on us. We value
and esteem highly the approval of men. Conquered that? Pride of life? Oh, what is the
pride of life? My ability to control my circumstances. It is power. It is power. I'm going to take charge of this.
I'm going to fix this. I'm going to make this right. You see, The Lord says, love
not the world, for this is what's in the world, and yet what he
says in the world is exactly what we see in us. The lust of
the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. Here's
the difference. Child of God, you don't love
those things, you hate them. You hate them when you see them
in yourself. You know they're there. You can't
conquer them, and yet, You hate them. You hate the fact that
you are so drawn to the things of this world. You hate the fact
that your flesh is so weak and so easily persuaded to pursue
its own pleasure. Well, I've got good news for
you. When the Lord Jesus Christ went
into the wilderness and was tempted of the devil for 40 days, here
we have another number 40. The number of days that Goliath
came down to the valley and threatened the children of Israel, 40 days. At the end of those 40 days,
after fasting 40 days, Satan said, turn that stone into bread. I know you're hungry. Satisfy
the desires of your flesh. You can do it. You can perform
a miracle. And the Lord Jesus Christ looked
at Satan and he said, man shall not live by bread alone but by
every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. And so though
he, like you and I, was tempted in all ways that we are, yet
he's without sin. He never gave into that temptation
to pursue the pleasures of the flesh. He killed that giant. And then Satan took him up on
the pinnacle of the temple and said, cast yourself down. And
he quoted scripture to the Lord. He said, the angels will catch
you and they will not allow your feet, your heel to be bruised. And the Lord Jesus Christ said,
thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God, for him only shall thy
serve. And he would not be tempted.
Casting himself off the temple would have put him in the limelight
before everyone and the angels catching him would have made
him the most popular. Oh, you see the eyes, you see
the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of
life. Thirdly, the Lord Jesus was taken
up onto a mountain and Satan said to him, bow down before
me and I'll give you all these nations. And the Lord Jesus was
not tempted. He slew that giant. He said,
I shall worship the Lord thy God and him only shall I serve. When Eve was tempted in the garden,
you see, this goes all the way back to the garden. When Eve
was tempted in the garden, Satan showed her the fruit that was
on the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. And she saw
that it was pleasant to the taste. pleasing to the eyes, and able
to make one wise. All that is in the world, the
lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, are the giants that you and I,
like Saul and David's brothers, are afraid of. We cannot defeat
them. And the Lord Jesus Christ defeated
them all. He defeated them all. Oh, here's our hope. He got the victory. He got the
victory. You and I live in this world. You there in 1 John, turn over
with me to verse chapter five and look with me at verse four. Verse four of chapter five in
1 John. For whatsoever is born of God
overcometh the world. So while I'm not overcoming the
world very well, because the lust of the flesh and the lust
of the eyes and the pride of life trip me up every day. And I hate that I'm this way. And this is the victory that
overcometh the world. not your success in defeating
the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride
of life. This is the victory that overcometh the world, even
our faith. Who is he that overcometh the
world? But he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God. In this world you shall have
tribulations, but be of good cheer. I have overcome. There's our hope, brethren. We have the son of David who feared not Goliath. He went
down into that valley. He said, who is this uncircumcised
Philistine? Who is this underdog that comes
against the God of Israel? I'll take care of him. I'll defeat
him. I'll put away the curse of the
law so that you need not fear the judgment of God. I'll put
away your sin. I'll live a perfect life in the
flesh that you cannot live. I will conquer the world and
I will destroy the works of the devil. He defeated him. You and I face these giants every
day, every day. The weapons of our warfare are
not carnal. They're mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds
and to bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience
of Christ. Our heavenly father, forgive
us of our sin and thank you for a savior like thy dear son, who
has come from heaven and brought us the bread of life. Give us
the faith to look to him For it's in his name we pray, amen. 300, let's stand together, number
300. More secure is no one ever than
the loved ones of the Savior, not yon star on high abiding,
nor the bird in home nest hiding. God His own doth tend and nourish,
In His holy courts they flourish, Like a Father kind He spares
them, In His loving arms He bears them. Neither life nor death
can ever From the Lord His children sever, For His love and deep
compassion Comforts them in tribulation. Little flock, to joy then yield
thee, Jacob's God will ever shield thee. Rest secure with his defender,
at his will all folks surrender. what he takes or what he gives
us shows the father's love so precious we may trust his purpose
wholly till his children's welfare solely go ahead be seated for
