tonight, all the way from Kentucky. Let's open our Bibles together
to Isaiah chapter 40 for our call to worship. Isaiah chapter
40, and while you look that up, Diane Etheridge is going to be
at Florida Hospital Princeton in the morning for surgery. They found a spot on her lung
and they're going to go in immediately and remove a portion of her lung
tomorrow. So she'll be out of work for
a couple of months as a result of it. But I want us to pray
for Diane and Michael. On a more positive note, Maria
Pena got accepted into Vanderbilt. So she's going to start in the
fall and be attending the church there in Nashville where Chris
pastors. So, very happy for them. Alright, you have your Bibles
open to Isaiah chapter 40. We'll begin reading in verse
28. Hast thou not known Hast thou not heard that the
everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth,
fainteth not, neither is weary? There is no searching of his
understanding. He giveth power to the faint,
and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even
the youth shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall
utterly fall. But they that wait upon the Lord
shall..." Remember what that word renewed means? It means
to change. It means to change. He doesn't
take our strength and improve it. He changes our strength to
His. They shall renew their strength.
They shall mount up with wings as eagles. They shall run and
not be weary. They shall walk and not faint.
Keep silent before me, O islands, and let the people, again, the
word renew there is change, their strength, let them come near. Let them speak. Let us come together
to judgment. So we've come together to do
tonight to make judgments, make judgments about what's true and
what's not true. What God says important, what
the world says important. We're here to make judgments.
May God be pleased to give us wisdom to make proper judgments
according to the revelation of his word. Let's pray together. Our merciful Heavenly Father,
we are thankful that we're not left to our own devices, we're
not left to our own opinions, but that You've told us clearly
in Your Word what Your judgments are, and then You've given us
Your Spirit to enlighten the eyes of our understanding, enabling
us to agree with Thee. and oh how we pray that you'd
be pleased now to enable us to enter into judgment with you.
Judgment about what's true, what's not. Judgment about how it is
you are pleased to save sinners. Judgment about your very nature,
your power, your glory. Lord, we thank you for Diane.
We thank you for the fact that the doctors seem to have found
this early and we pray that you would direct their hands and
make them skillful tomorrow and that that the surgery would go
well. And thank you for Diane's confession
of believing this is of the Lord and that she's in your hand.
And Lord, we pray that you would minister grace to her heart as
she waits on you. We thank you for Michael and
pray Lord for grace and strength as they face this trial. We ask it in Christ's name. Amen. We're going to stay at our spiral hymnal
from the second hymn, number 44. Just a page over. Number
44. And let's all stand together. Precious Savior, friend of sinners,
we as such to Thee draw near. Let Thy Spirit dwell within us
with that love that casts out fear. Matchless Savior, let us
know Thee, as the Lord our righteousness. Cause our hearts to cleave unto
Thee, come and with Thy presence bless. Open now thy precious
treasure, let thy word here freely flow. Give to us a gracious measure,
tis thyself we long to know. Come and claim us as thy portion. Let us all find rest in thee. Leave us not to empty notions. We would find our hope in thee. Please be seated. I said Florida Hospital Princeton.
You all understand that's the main campus on Princeton for
Florida Hospital. Most of us hadn't been around
here as long as you have, Brian. He said there used to be a Florida
Hospital Princeton that's Okay, no No, this is Florida Hospital
at Princeton the main campus All right. Thank you Will you? Turn with me in your Bibles,
please to Psalm. I'm sorry Isaiah 44 Isaiah 44 I've titled this message, All
for His Bride. All for His Bride. Husbands,
love your wives even as Christ loved the church and gave Himself
for her. Everything the Lord is doing
in this world is for His Bride. This world exists for His Bride. I heard today, I guess, that Great Britain has started the
process of breaking away from the European Union, and they
were talking about what a historical event that's going to be for
England and Great Britain. And I thought about, you know,
there's a lot of very significant events that take place in the
history of the world. I'm sure that those delegates
that met in Philadelphia on July 4th, 1776 had no idea the ramifications
of that Declaration of Independence that they were signing. But look
what's happened. Those events, however historical
they are, however eventful they are, do not compare to what we're
doing right now. They don't. Matter of fact, all
those events, however significant they might be in the history
of mankind, all happen for the purpose of the Bride of Christ. The Lord has one agenda. to glorify
himself through the saving of his people, the gathering together
of his elect and everything in this world. I gave Ethiopia,
I gave Seba for you. You think about all the events
of the Old Testament and the children of Israel were They
were the main character in all those events, whether it was
going down into Egypt. What did the Lord tell us in
Romans? He said, I raised up Pharaoh. for you to show my glory through
him. Whether it be the conflict that
Israel had with the Babylonians or with the Syrians or all the
events that took place throughout. Look at verse 28 in this chapter. And that saith of Cyrus, he is
my shepherd. Now Cyrus was the king. This
is Isaiah 44, the last verse, 28. Cyrus was the Persian king
that overthrew the Babylonians. The children of Israel were 70
years exiled to Babylon. God sent them over there. God
raised up Babylon. God brought down the paganism
that was being practiced in Israel and exiled them to Babylon and
renewed the gospel. Cyrus was a pagan Persian king
that God raised up to destroy the Babylonians to bring the
children of Israel back to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple. You remember
Nehemiah and Ezra and all that took place there. That was Cyrus.
And God says, Cyrus, he's my shepherd. He belongs to me. You see, it's
all for Jerusalem. It's all for Jerusalem. Everything. We get caught up in the little
minutia of our lives, don't we? And we forget. These huge historical
events that take place in the world are nothing. The nations,
God says, are a drop in the bucket to me. They're a speck of dust
on the scale. Everything that I'm doing is
for my bride. I made this world for my church. I raise up kings and I put down
kings for my church. And it's all about the salvation
of God's people. And it's the salvation of His
people that, it's the only thing that glorifies Him. No one else,
no one else in the world that's not, that doesn't know the Lord,
they're not glorifying God. They're not glorifying God. You
see, at the end of the day, really, it's not unto us, O Lord, Psalm
115, not unto us, but unto thy name be glory. He's the one. It's all for his glory. I say
it's all for his bride, but it's all for his glory because his
bride is the only one that's glorifying him. And now he's
gonna speak to his bride and assure him, assure her. Assure
them that that's what He's doing. Look at verse 24 in Isaiah chapter
44. Who is speaking? That's the first question I want
us to ask. Who is speaking? And the Lord
identifies Himself with four things here in this one verse. Thus saith the Lord. Is that enough for you? Thus
saith the Lord." You know, the Lord had not given his name out
until Moses at the burning bush. Prior to that, he wasn't known
as Jehovah. He wasn't known as the glorious,
great, self-existent creator and sustainer of all of life,
I Am. And Moses asked him, Lord, who
shall I say sent me? And the Lord said, Tell them.
Every time you see L-O-R-D, all in caps, it's Jehovah. That's
the name that the Lord Jesus Christ gave to Moses at the burning
bush. Tell them I AM hath sent you. I AM. I'm not created. I'm not dependent, I'm not derived,
I'm not contingent, I'm not like you in any way. I am, I exist within myself. I am the infinite, eternal God. And when the Lord Jesus Christ
came and he said, I am the bread of life, he was taking the very
name of God and saying, you have no sustenance outside of me.
Here's the one who's speaking. It's the Lord who is our food,
who is our bread. When he called himself the light
of the world in John chapter 8 verse 12, I am the light of
the world. You've got no light outside of
me. You're just living in darkness. You can't see, you don't know,
you're lost, you're without God in this world. There's no hope
for light apart from me. Am and then when the Lord said
in John chapter 8 verse 58 before Abraham was I am I Am oh He's
completely outside of time Completely this this thing we call time
and space and this life is is created for our existence But
there's a whole realm of reality outside of this physical world. And the Lord said before Abraham
was, I am, I am. Here's the one speaking. If we
believe what he says about himself, we'll listen to what he has to
say, won't we? When the Lord said, I am the door into the
sheep fold. You're not coming into the family
of God outside of me. The thief and the robber comes
over the wall, but the shepherd, and then he went on to call himself
in that same passage in John chapter 10, the good shepherd
who lays down his life for the sheep. There's no hope of being in God's
sheepfold apart from the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the one
speaking here, thus saith the Lord. In John, excuse me, in
John chapter 11, the Lord told Martha, you remember
when she said, I know that my brother will raise on the last
day. And the Lord said to Martha, Martha, I am the resurrection
and the life. I am the resurrection. There's
no life outside of me. He that believeth in me, though
he die yet, shall he live. Martha, believeth thou this?
There's no hope for life after death apart from the Lord Jesus
Christ. When he said, I am the way, I
am the truth, and I am the life, no man can come to the Father
except by me. He was taking the name of God
identifying himself with that name the fullness of the Godhead
bodily and in John chapter 15 when the Lord Jesus Christ said
I am That's the word. That's the word Lord. I am the
true vine a Lot of false vines out there, but I'm the true vine
Unless the branch abides in this vine It can bear no fruit So who's speaking? The Lord. The Lord. Now I'm interested
in knowing what the Lord has to say, aren't you? There's a
lot of voices in this world. We hear a lot of them. But none
of them speak like Him. When those soldiers came back
and they said, when the Pharisees asked Him, where is He? Why didn't
you bring Him? Never a man spoke like this man
before. We didn't have the authority to take Him. He had authority
over us. He spoke as a man having authority. Well, of course He did. Of course
He did. He's the Lord. Notice how else He identifies
Himself in verse 24. Thy Redeemer. All humanity has been sold into
the slavery of sin. And like a runaway slave, men
keep running away, trying to find their freedom, only to be
caught and brought back under the bondage of sin. And so men
go about trying to redeem themselves. It's all in vain. The Lord said,
I am thy redeemer. I have purchased you. I have
paid the ransom price. I have been your kinsman redeemer. I have reckoned with that kinsman
that was nearer unto you than me. That was the law. And I satisfied
the demands of the law. And I bought you unto myself
so that you've been bought with a price, the precious blood of
the Lord Jesus Christ. No longer, no longer are you
under the bondage of sin. No longer. I've bought you from
it. He said, stand fast in the liberty
wherewith Christ has made you free and be not entangled again
with the yoke of bondage. What's the yoke of bondage? That's
the law. The strength of sin is the law. And we're not under
the law. We're not under the law, we're
under grace. And so that's why the Lord said, where the Spirit
of God is, there is liberty. And if Jesus has set you free,
you're free indeed. You're free from the law, free
from the condemnation of the law. I'm your Redeemer. I'm the Lord. I've bought you. You're mine. I've paid the price. I've settled the books. Thus saith the Lord thy Redeemer
and He that formed thee from the womb. He that formed thee
from the womb. Our God is the first cause of
all things. Of all things. There's lots of
secondary causes that we see in the events of the world, but
He's the first cause of all things. He has ordained everything according
to His will and according to His purpose, and He works all
things for our good and for His glory. He said, I formed you
from the womb. Men spend all their time trying
to find out the origin of life. He's the origin of life. I formed
you from the womb. Everything in creation was purposed
by me. Everything in providence, everything
that takes place in the events of this life and in this world,
I'm ordering every one of them right down to their detail. And
most importantly, everything in salvation. Everything in salvation
was purposed of God in the covenant of grace before time ever began
And I and I chose my people I redeemed them I'm going to regenerate
them and not a one of them are going to be lost Why? Because
that's what it's all about That's what this world is all about
It's not about anything else I form thee from the womb. I am the Lord that maketh all things. I'm the creator of all of life. the solitary creator of everything
in heaven and everything in earth all things were made by him and
without him was not anything made that was made he created
all things and by and for his good pleasure for his good pleasure
they are and were created he said I'm the I'm the maker of
everything I'm the Lord, I'm your Redeemer." Notice he didn't
say, I'm making an offer of redemption to the world. He said, I am thy
Redeemer. He's speaking to Jerusalem, speaking
to his church. I am thy Redeemer. I formed thee
from the womb. I'm the first cause of everything.
In creation, in providence, in salvation, I purposed it before
time began. And I put into existence everything
that is. I created it all. For what purpose? To accomplish the purpose that
I ordained in forming you. You see, the word form means
that I purposed you and now I've created everything in order to
fulfill that purpose. And my whole purpose, my whole
purpose is the salvation of my people, the gathering together
of the bride of Christ. There is no other purpose. There
isn't. Everything else. Solomon tried
to find purpose in other things, didn't he? What did he conclude?
Vanity of vanities, all is vanity. This is the only thing that matters.
It's the only thing that's gonna last. It's the only thing that's
eternal. Everything else is temporal.
And so the Lord speaking, he said, thus saith the Lord, thy
Redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the
Lord that maketh all things, that stretches forth the heavens
above and spreadeth above the earth by myself. By myself. I don't need you to help me. Made it all by myself. I purpose
I'm going to accomplish it all by myself Gonna do it all That
so here's here's the Lord just declaring his absolute sovereign
omnipotence to his people Encouraging us to know that this is what
I'm all about This is what I'm going to do And I'm gonna do
it for you Notice in verse 25, when the
Lord speaks, you remember Sunday we saw that when God speaks,
He reveals the error of idolatry. We saw that in chapter 44 of
Isaiah. And here He says it again, look
at verse 25. When I do this, I'm going to frustrate the tokens
of the liars. I'm going to make diviners mad. I'm going to turn wise men backward
and make their knowledge foolish. Who's he going to do that to?
Not them. Not them. The wise men of this world leave
this world believing that they're wise. The diviners of religion,
they spend their whole lives believing the lie that they're
preaching. Turn with me to 1 Corinthians
1. 1 Corinthians 1. Verse 25, I'm sorry, let's back up to verse
19. For it is written, I will destroy
the wisdom of the wise and will bring to nothing the understanding
of the prudent. Now he's not saying he's going
to destroy their wisdom to them. He's saying the same thing that
he just said in the verse that we just read. He's going to frustrate
the tokens of the liars so that we're not deceived by them. He's
going to make the diviners mad. He's going to turn the wise men
backward and make their knowledge foolishness to us. For it is
written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and bring to nothing
the understanding of the prudent. Verse 20. Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is
the disputer of this world? Hath not God made foolish the
wisdom of this world? And after that in the wisdom
of God, the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the
foolishness of preaching to save them that believe." You see,
before we can have a full understanding
of the gospel. We have to become discontent, dissatisfied, disillusioned
by the things of this world. And so the Lord takes all the
things that other men value and He exposes them to His bride
for what they are. And we realize that they're all
lies. They're all lies. The world promises
happiness. Oh, if you just achieve this
level of success, you'll be content. If you just indulge yourself
in the pleasures of the flesh a little bit more, you'll be
happy. If you just had this person in your life, you'd have it all
together. Or that person. promises promises and and so
when the Lord speaks he makes those things out for what they
are their lives there's no there's no happiness there no lasting
contentment there all there's pleasure and sin for a season
but in the end it it leads to death doesn't it and so he says
when I speak go back with me to our text That's why, that's why that the
Apostle Paul in meeting with the philosophers on Mars Hill,
remember when he went to Athens in Acts chapter 17, and those philosophers were the
same philosophers that we have today, Epicureans and Stoics,
you remember? And don't let anybody fool you
in thinking that the United States of America was founded as a Christian
nation. Our founding fathers were full-blooded, devoted Epicureans. When Thomas Jefferson wrote that
life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, that was an Epicurean
statement in the Declaration of Independence. And you and
I have grown up in a nation of Epicurean philosophy. What is
Epicureanism? Real meaning, real pleasure,
real purpose in life comes through things. Just accumulate more
stuff and you can enjoy the things of this world and then you'll
have the real life. That's what this nation is. It's
a nation, I'm thankful for this now. I'm thankful for the freedoms
that we have. God raised up this nation for one purpose. That
was for the purpose of preaching the gospel. And I'm just saying
that our founding fathers were not Christians. They were Epicureans. And Paul met with those philosophers
and then there were the Stoics. And what were the Stoics? Well,
they're just the opposite of Epicureanism. The Stoics believe
that all real purpose, real meaning, real satisfaction in life comes
from internal reflection and discipline and spirituality. And so if we just dig deep enough
into our psyche, we'll be able to discover what the real meaning
of life is. It's the same thing today. Either
I get pleasure from without or I get pleasure from within. And
most folks spend their whole lives vacillating back and forth
between one and the other. They indulge themselves in Epicureanism
until they come up empty and then they reflect back on themselves
and think, well, maybe this is where it is. And then there's
nothing there. The deeper they go, it's like
going down in a well, the darker it gets. And so then they think,
well, I'll try something else in the world. And they go back
and forth and back and forth and back and forth and never
discover the meaning of life because life is in Christ. It's
not in you and it's not in the world. It's in Christ. And everything else is a lie. Epicureanism is a lie. Stoicism
is a lie. And the Lord said, when I speak,
I'm going to frustrate the tokens of the liars and the diviners,
all those Epicureans and all those Stoics and all those philosophers
and all those preachers. I'm going to expose them to you
for what they are, and you're not going to be able to derive
any satisfaction. You're going to become disillusioned.
Because you're going to be just like everybody else. You're going
to go back and forth and back and forth between Epicureanism
and Stoicism. But there's going to come a point
where I'm going to intervene. Most folks will live their whole
lives either as Epicureans or Stoics or back and forth between
the two and die that way. But I'm not going to let that
happen to my bride. I'm going to make her to be disillusioned.
She's going to see the lies of it and she's going to come to
me and find life in me. Why? Because I'm the Lord and
I've redeemed her. I formed her from the womb and
I made all things in heaven and in earth for her for her Look
at verse 26 Then you know what I'm gonna do when they become
when they become disillusioned When they when they come to the
end of themselves and realize that everything in the world
everything in religion Everything in religion is just a lie the
self-righteousness, the hypocrisy, the fakery of religion, everybody
acting like everybody's doing so well, and they're going to
become... You see, most folks will be able to spend their lives
under a false gospel and be content. But not my children. They're
not going to do it. I'm not going to let them. I'm
going to make them to differ. They're not going to be able
to be content with man-made religion. And I'm going to turn them to
myself, and then look in verse 26. I'm going to confirm the
word of my servant. They're going to hear the gospel,
and they're going to believe it. That's what he's saying.
I'm going to make them to believe the word of God. Thus saith the
Lord. I'm going to make them believe
the gospel of my free grace. Once they realize there's nothing
anywhere else to be had, then I'm going to show them the truth. And I'm going to confirm the
word of His servant and perform the counsel of His messengers. All the promises of God, all
the truth of the Scriptures are going to be performed in their
hearts, knowing that Christ, all the promises of God, are
yea and amen in Christ. That He fulfilled all the prophecies,
all the promises of God, everything. And I'm going to confirm that
to their hearts. They're going to believe it. They're going
to believe the revelation that I have given of my Son, and they're
going to come to Him. He's going to say to Jerusalem,
look at verse 26, thou shalt be inhabited. And to the cities
of Judah, you shall be built, and I will raise up the decayed
places thereof." The decayed places. You see, there's never
been a time when God's elect did not belong to Him. Before
their conversion, they were still His. Decayed as they were they
were his and he raises them from the dead and gives them a new
life Said I'm gonna I'm gonna do this. I'm gonna make sure
that Jerusalem is inhabited I'm gonna make sure that the cities
of Judah are built up now prophetically. He's speaking Long before the
children of Israel even went into Babylonian captivity and
promising the return from Babylon But the spiritual meaning of
this is that you and I live in Babylon. We live in a world of
babblers. We live in a world of men who
are trying to earn favor with God by building a tower to heaven.
And the Lord says, I'm going to bring you to myself. I'm going
to bring you to the city. This is what I'm doing. All those other things that are
taking place in the world are insignificant compared to inhabiting
Jerusalem with my people. And I'm going to say to the deep,
be dry. I'm gonna make a pathway through
the Red Sea. I'm gonna cause you to walk on
dry ground, and that sea that once separated you from me will
be no more. I'm gonna speak to the sea, and
I'm gonna cause an east wind to blow and move that water out
of the way. Why? Because that's what the
seas there, the nations are there. Everything's there for my bride.
This is all about the saving of my people there. You know, in this city, what we're doing here tonight
would be considered one of the most insignificant events taking
place in central Florida right now. And what I'm saying to you is
there's nothing happening anywhere in this city more important than
what's happening right here, right now. Are we going to make judgments
according to the values of the world, or are we going to make
judgments based on what God says He values? And that's what the
Lord's doing. He's speaking to us. And He's
saying to us, this is what I value. And there's gonna come a day
when He's gonna parade His bride as a trophy of His grace before
all of creation. And the whole world's gonna know
that this is really what it was all about. He saith to the deep, be dry. And when he's ready to bring
one of his children to himself, there's no ocean that can get
in the way. I will dry up thy rivers and
he will say to Cyrus, that's the Persian king. And what the
Lord's saying is, I'm gonna do everything in my power to accomplish
my purpose, which is the glory of my name by the salvation of
my people. Now, does he lack the power?
No. And so he says, Cyrus, I'm gonna
raise you up, Cyrus. I'm gonna give you power over
the Babylonians and then I'm going to give you a favorable
heart towards my people and When Nehemiah comes to you I'm going
to cause you to send him back to Jerusalem to rebuild the city
of Jerusalem. Why? Because the only reason
you exist Cyrus is for Jerusalem I'm gonna say to Cyrus he is
my shepherd and He shall perform all my pleasure The politicians in Washington
DC or in any other capital of any nation in this world are
Doing the Lord's pleasure They're doing the Lord's pleasure Whatever
whatever decisions they make I Every decision they make is
according to his pleasure. It's according to his will. That's
our God. What a glorious God we have.
I mean, they sit around and they debate and they think they're
making decisions and they're doing everything exactly like
the Lord ordained it to be done. Why? Because it's not about them. It's about the church. It's about
Christ and His bride. Even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built. I'm going
to build Jerusalem. And to the temple, Thy foundations
shall be laid. And what does Hebrews say about
God's people? They look for a city. They look for a city whose builder
and maker is God. A city which hath foundations. The Lord Jesus Christ is the
foundation. This is the rock upon which I
will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not be able
to prevail against it. This is what I'm doing. You know, here we are just, we're
nobodies in the grand scheme of things as far as this world
is concerned, aren't we? As individuals and as a group,
we're pretty much nobodies. But to Him, We're everything. We're everything. This is what
the Lord Jesus Christ came to do. He came to save His people. He came to redeem them. And He
said, I formed you from the womb. Created everything in heaven
and everything on earth by myself in order that I the Lord Would
redeem you all for my glory Let the world spin their wheels Believing the lies God makes
his people to see the lies of this world for what they are,
and causes them to come to Christ, who is our life. Our Heavenly Father, we're so
very thankful for your word, and we're thankful for the encouragement
that you give to the hearts of your people, and oh Lord, we
pray that that You would cause us to believe
with all of our hearts what You have so clearly declared. We
ask it in Christ's name. Amen. Number 12. Let's stand together.
Number 12. so Upon my great and sovereign God,
I cast my soul and rest. My Father's hand controls the
world, and what he does is best. So be still, my heart and doubt
no more. Believe and find sweet rest. God's wisdom, love, and truth,
and power combine to make thee blessed. In raging storms and
fiery trials, He keeps me from all harms. He walks with me and
