Let's take our Bibles now and
let's look at this verse 19 of Luke 22. And he took bread and gave thanks,
and break it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which
is given for you. this do in remembrance of me."
Let's pray together. Our Father, as we come this evening, in the precious and holy name
of the Lord Jesus Christ, we assemble ourselves realizing
that, Lord, all of our hope is in Him. our Advocate, our Great
High Priest. Father, would You bless the Word
tonight. Bless it to our hearts. I pray
for this assembly. Lord, thank You. Thank You for
the fellowship that we enjoy in the Lord Jesus Himself. Thank
You for allowing the Gospel to be here, the candlestick of hope,
peace, and the glory of God in the Lord Jesus Christ. I pray
for Kyle and his wife. Lord, You do all things well.
You ruled and reigned. You told us to ask and seek and
knock, and we ask if it be Your will that You would spare this
child. I pray for Kyle, and I pray that
he will be a consistent witness before his wife In these things
we ask for Christ's sake. Amen. Before Brother Scott was delivered into the glorious
presence of our Lord, he came to me one day and sat down and
we were just chit-chatting. And he reached in his pocket
and he pulled out a pocket knife. And he gave me this knife and
he said, I want to give you this so that when I'm gone you can
remember me. And I told him, I said, Scott,
do you really think that I'll need a pocket knife to remember
you. I mean, do you really, really?
He said, well, I want to give it to you. I said, well, I can
tell you this. I don't need a pocket knife. I appreciate it, but I don't
need a pocket knife to remember you. But do you know, every time I
look at that pocket knife, I think of him. I think of where he was sitting,
where he was placed on the chair, that rocking chair right over
there, exactly where I was. I still hear his voice. Tonight, we're here to remember
our Lord. And you know some would think,
believers, all believers would think this. Do you really think
that we would have to eat a little piece of bread and drink a little
cup of wine to remember the Lord? But do you know every time we
eat, we think of Him. in the indescribable wisdom of
Almighty God, the Lord Jesus Himself, God, knew the wisdom to tell us what we ought to do. Just do. The principal object of the Lord's
Supper was to remind believers of His death in the redemption
of His people. That's what it's for. This is not a funeral. It's a
commemorative. It's an ordinance, a commemorative
ordinance to Him who is alive and we remember His death. We eat that bread and drink that
cup. And we call to remembrance He
who was our substitute, who was made sin. You can't eat
that bread, not by faith, not in reality. You cannot eat that
piece of bread and drink that cup without remembering Him. This is a visible sermon. This
is visible. And every believer that partakes
of the Lord's table is preaching this Scripture. For as often as you eat this
bread and drink this cup, you do show the Lord's death till
He comes. You do publicly proclaim or you
preach. That's what it means. To show,
to publicly proclaim or to preach the remembrance of His shed blood
and broken body. We eat that bread and drink that
cup and we preach Christ crucified. God is Spirit. That is what the Lord told the
woman at Samaria. God is Spirit. And in the highest thoughts that
I can have of that statement, I fall miserably short of understanding
what it says. God is Spirit. There are no bounds,
no limits. His Spirit. He hears without
physical ears. He sees without physical eyes. And Scripture speaks the eyes
of the Lord, the ear of the Lord, the hand of the Lord. And He fills all things. No place that He's not. Just indescribable. fought Him. And the Scripture sets forth
that the Lord Jesus Christ that men could look upon. John said,
we touched Him. Our hands handled the Word of
life. We beheld His glory. And they
heard Him speak. and concerning him all the fullness
of the Godhead bodily. And he came into this world made in the likeness of sinful
flesh and for sin for the putting away of it. And he made himself of no reputation
and went to Calvary freely and laid down His life and He said,
I want you to remember that. And this is what I want you to
do as often as you do this. You eat this bread and you drink
this cup. Now isn't that seemingly a simple
thing? A simple thing. I don't want to make it into
anything that's mysterious and try to make that eating of that
bread and drinking that cup like there's some kind of a transition
into the actual body. I know it's not that. It's a piece of bread and a cup
of wine. That's what it is. And in the
glorious simplicity of that, trying to be just as simple as
I possibly can, just as plain as I possibly can, here's the
glory of this in the simplicity of it. A divine ordinance. The Lord's Supper. What a miracle. that God Almighty would give
us an ordinance. And we've come here tonight to
do just exactly what He's commanded us to do. Just do. With this ordinance, there's
a special blessing attached to it. Numerous blessings I can
think of. Here's one I can think of. For where two or three are gathered
together in My name, there am I in the midst of them." Now you think, He gave us this
ordinance. He did this very thing right
here with His disciples. And believers from that time
until right now, until He returns, are going to in obedience to
His command, they are going to eat this bread and drink this
cup. Oh, the weightiness of this blessed
observation, beholding by faith, knowing by faith the blessing
that goes with it. This do in remembrance of me. When we come together in our
little frail bodies, here we come by faith. And we're wanting
to, every believer in this place right now, you're thinking to yourself,
I know what you're thinking. I want to remember Him. And that's
something that the Spirit of God is going to have to give
me a heart for. You're going to have to teach
me. I want to be respectful to Him. I want to be obedient to
Him. I want to remember Him. Lord, would You help me to think as I ought to? Would You
bless this to my heart? Lord, if You bless the eating
and the drinking of this bread, if You bless it to my remembrance,
I'll remember. I just don't want it to be a
ceremony. And that's the easiest thing in the world for our flesh
to do, isn't it? Well, it's just the Lord's Supper. Oh, the blessing
attached to those that make much of the eating and the drinking
of the Lord's Table. Making much of it. No, it's not
just the Lord's Table. It's the Lord's Table. Do we not remember Him now? I mean, when much is made concerning
what He says, do you not think of His broken body and His shed
blood? Do you not think about Him putting
away your guilt? Lord, increase our faith. Lord,
help us. that this might be a precious
time of worship. And when we eat and when we drink,
Lord, help us. Help us to remember. Help us
to feed upon You life itself. Lord, help us not to neglect
it. And Lord, keep us from any excuses. Let's eat and drink of our blessed
Lord's table and pray that the Spirit of God might teach us,
thinking upon Him, remembering Him. And as we remember, Lord,
help our remembrance. Lord, help our faith. For Christ's
sake, amen. I'll ask the men if they'll come.
