Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised is the core theme of Jabez Rutt's sermon based on Psalm 145:3. He articulates the unsearchable greatness of God, emphasizing His omnipotence and uniqueness as the only true God who reigns over all creation. Rutt draws upon various Scripture references—in particular, Isaiah 45 and Colossians 1—to underscore God's sovereignty and the divine act of redemption through Jesus Christ, the eternal Son. He highlights the Christian's duty to acknowledge God's mercies and loving-kindness, reminding believers that it is solely by grace that they are saved and invited into communion with this great God. The sermon significantly encourages worship as a response to God's greatness, urging the congregation to constantly extol His praises across generations.

What does the Bible say about the greatness of God?

The Bible declares that 'Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable' (Psalm 145:3).

The Bible emphasizes that God's greatness is immeasurable and beyond human comprehension. Psalm 145 highlights this by stating that God is to be extolled and praised for His endless attributes. His majestic power and creative works are celebrated throughout generations, with His loving-kindness and mercy being particularly significant. As creatures under His sovereignty, it's essential for us to acknowledge His greatness and respond with reverence and praise, affirming that He is the one true God, unrivaled and eternal.

Psalm 145:3, Isaiah 45:5

How do we know God's sovereignty is true?

God's sovereignty is evidenced in scripture, affirming that He reigns over all things, both in heaven and on earth (Colossians 1:16-17).

The sovereignty of God is a fundamental doctrine rooted in scripture. The Bible teaches that He is the Creator of all, declaring that 'by Him all things consist.' This indicates His active governance over every aspect of creation, showing that nothing occurs outside of His will. In Romans 13, we read that 'the powers that be are ordained of God,' illustrating that even earthly authorities operate under His divine appointment. This understanding provides comfort, assuring believers that God's providential care encompasses every detail of life.

Colossians 1:16-17, Romans 13:1

Why is God's mercy important for Christians?

God's mercy is crucial for Christians as it is through His mercy that we are saved from our sins and given eternal life (Ephesians 2:4-5).

The importance of God's mercy in the life of a Christian cannot be overstated. Ephesians 2:4-5 emphasizes that God, being rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our transgressions. This mercy is the foundation of our salvation, showing that despite our unworthiness, God chooses to forgive and redeem us through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ. Such mercy encourages believers to live in gratitude and humility, recognizing that our relationship with God is solely based on His unmerited favor. It also motivates us to extend mercy to others, as we have been recipients of His boundless love.

Ephesians 2:4-5, Psalm 145:9

What does it mean that God's greatness is unsearchable?

God's greatness being unsearchable means that His attributes and works are beyond full human understanding and comprehension (Psalm 145:3).

When we say that God's greatness is unsearchable, we acknowledge that His character and deeds transcend our ability to exhaustively know or understand them. As stated in Psalm 145:3, His 'greatness is unsearchable,' highlighting that no matter how much we study or seek to understand Him, His depth of wisdom, power, and love surpasses all human exploration. This concept is also reflected in Romans 11:33, praising the depths of God's riches and wisdom. Such a realization cultivates a sense of awe and reverence, prompting believers to worship Him in light of His infinite nature.

Psalm 145:3, Romans 11:33

Why do Christians praise God?

Christians praise God as an expression of gratitude for His greatness, mercy, and the work of salvation in their lives (Psalm 145:10).

Praise is an integral part of the Christian life, deeply rooted in the recognition of who God is and what He has done. Christians are compelled to praise God for His greatness, as articulated in Psalm 145:10, which states that 'all thy works shall praise thee, O Lord.' This praise encompasses gratitude for His mercy, love, and the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. Acknowledging God's sovereignty and kindness leads believers to worship Him collectively and individually, celebrating His goodness and faithfulness. Moreover, such expressions of praise reflect a heart transformed by grace, affirming the relationship between the Creator and His creation.

Let us commence our service this afternoon by singing together hymn number one. The tune is Salzburg, 861. Great God, how infinite art thou. What worthless worms are we. Let the whole race of creatures bow and pay their praise to thee.

Hymn number one. tune sortzberg 861

Let us read together from the Holy Word of God in Psalm 145.

Psalm 145. I will extol thee, my God, O King, and I will bless thy name for ever and ever. Every day will I bless thee, and I will praise thy name for ever and ever. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts. I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works. And men shall speak of the might of thy terrible acts, and I will declare thy greatness.

They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness, and shall sing of thy righteousness. The Lord is gracious, and full of compassion, slow to anger, and of great mercy. The Lord is good to all, and his tender mercies are over all his works. All thy works shall praise thee, O Lord, and thy saints shall bless thee. They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom and talk of thy power, to make known to the sons of men his mighty acts and the glorious majesty of his kingdom.

Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth throughout all generations. The Lord upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down. The eyes of all wait upon thee, and thou givest them their meat in due season. Thou openest thine hand and satisfies the desire of every living thing. The Lord is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works. The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. He will fulfill the desire of them that fear him. He also will hear their cry, and will save them.

The Lord preserveth all them that love him, but all the wicked will he destroy. My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord, and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever.

May the Lord bless the reading of his own precious word and grant to us a spirit of real prayer.

Gracious, merciful and almighty Lord, we do bow before thy glorious majesty, glorious in wisdom and power and righteousness, for we do desire to bow before thee, to humble ourselves before thee, to confess our sins and our sinfulness and our wanderings and our backslidings, to confess, O Lord, that we leave undone the things that we ought to do and we do the things that we ought not to do. And we find a law within our members that when I would do good, then evil is present with me. And Lord, we prove this day by day. We prove, O Lord, that the heart of man is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. And so we come before Thee in confession. Thou art that great God that dwelleth in light inaccessible, unto which no man can approach unto. Thou art immortal and invisible, the only true God. And we desire grace to bow before Thee.

And we come, Lord, in thanksgiving that Thou hast made a new and living way, whereby poor sinners can approach unto thee in the person of thine only begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. God was manifest in the flesh. So we come, Lord, with the psalmist, great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised. His greatness is unsearchable. And we do desire, O Lord, a spirit of praise and of thanksgiving for the wonders of redeeming love, for that glorious and everlasting covenant ordered in all things and sure. And as thy servant David said, this is all my salvation. And it is, Lord. Everything is of thy sovereign grace that has chosen and redeemed and delivered thy people from their sins and brought life and immortality to light in the gospel. Oh, we pray that we may see that light. As John Bunyan said, see yon shining light. We pray, oh Lord, that we may see that shining light. Jesus himself said, I am the light of the world. And that we do desire to come to that light.

Thy word declares that men love darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil. But we come, Lord, because thou hast made us realize and understand that we're sinners, that we are lost and undone. And we come to thee in that wonderful name, the name of Jesus. for he shall save his people from their sins. We come, Lord, we pray that thou wouldst enable us each to come. Think of the little ones and the children and the young and tending years that they may be brought to think upon thy name and be brought to love thee, to serve thee, to follow thee, in their young and in their tender years. Oh, do hear us, Lord, we humbly pray thee, and do bless the dear children. We pray for the young friends, each one of them, that they may know thy blessing, that they may be brought to realise their lost condition, and they may be brought to feel their need of Jesus Christ. and that they may become true followers of thee and of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

Lord, bless thy people. We do humbly beseech thee. Confirm thine inheritance, we pray thee. Shine from on high, thy love restore. Oh Lord, we do pray for those that may be in darkness, that they may be brought into light. Those in bondage may be brought into liberty. Those that are far off may be made nigh by the blood of Jesus Christ. We do pray, most gracious God, that thou wouldst graciously be with all those in affliction and trouble and trial and perplexity. Those of us, Lord, that are now in the evening time of life's journey, guide us. O thou great Jehovah, we're pilgrims in a barren land. Guide us safely unto thy heavenly kingdom. Teach us thy ways. Lead us in thy paths. Impress upon our hearts and minds that there is but one thing that is needful. Oh, do hear us, Lord, we humbly pray thee and grant that one thing.

Lord, we do pray that thou would remember those that are out of the way, those that have wandered from the ways of truth and of righteousness, that thou would graciously stretch out thy almighty arm, which caused them to be in one and cause them to return unto Thee, O Lord, we beseech Thee. None are beyond Thy sovereign power and love and mercy. And, O Lord, we do pray that Thou wouldst graciously remember those, each and every one that are in the midst of the journey of life. Remember them with the favour that Thou bearest unto Thy people. Visit them with thy great salvation. O Lord, we do pray that where there is death, thou wouldst give life, and where there is torment, that thou wouldst give peace.

We do pray, most gracious Lord, that thou wouldst remember all thy servants as they labor in word and doctrine upon the walls of Zion today. and that thou wouldst remember, O Lord, those of thy servants that expect to begin a probationary period in the beginning of this new year. We lovingly commend each one to thee and to the word of thy grace and pray that thou wouldst guard them with all sufficient grace.

It may be, O Lord, to them a great mountain, but we read in thy word who art thou, O great mountain, before the rubble thou shalt become a plain. Lord, make thy will clear unto thy people. And O Lord, we do pray that thou, the great Lord of the harvest, would send true labourers into the harvest and be with each one of thy servants this day.

Lord, arise in thy Zion and make bare thine holy arm, pull down the strongholds of Satan, and grant, O Lord, that where there is division, that thou wouldst bring peace and unity and love and kindness, even by the Spirit of Christ, and that we may take heed unto thy word Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus. O Lord, do grant us the mind of Christ. Do grant us the spirit of Christ. Do grant us the power of Christ. Do grant us the love of Christ. We do humbly beseech of Thee.

For we do pray, most gracious Lord, that Thou wouldst hear our prayers. and our entreaties and we think of all the assemblies of thy people as they gather together around thy word that thou wouldst be gracious and that thou wouldst grant a building up, a reviving, a renewing, a replenishing. We think of the beloved friends at Tunbridge Wells and the loss of dear Margaret and we pray for them that thou wast drawn near to them even this day, and that thou wast revived them, that thou wast blow with the wind of thy spirit, that thou wast grant the constraining love of Christ in that congregation, that there may be those that shall be constrained by thy lovingkindness and by thy grace to follow thee and to serve thee in their day and in their generation.

Lord, there is nothing too hard for thee. Thou art able to do abundantly more than we can even ask or think. Lord, let thy work appear unto thy servants and thy glory unto their children. We do humbly beseech thee, grant that the glory, light, and power of gospel truth may shine forth from this little house of prayer into this village and the surrounding villages and hamlets, that we may see thy work and thy power and thy glory as thou usest to be in the sanctuary, and that our neighbours hear that the word of the Lord may reach into their homes, that it may be as it was in that wonderful day when she and all our house believed and followed the Lord Jesus.

O Lord, we pray that we may see such a day, that we may see the wonderful power of the Spirit of God. We thank Thee, O God, for all Thy tender mercies, for Thy greatness. We thank Thee for the love of our Heavenly Father and the sending forth of His only begotten Son. We thank Thee for the love of our Lord Jesus Christ, who came to this sin-cursed world and was made of a woman made under the law that he might redeem them that are under the law. We thank the most gracious Lord that he lived a life that we could not live. He died a death that we could not die and that he rose again from the dead and swallowed up death in victory and put away sin by that glorious offering of himself on the cross of Calvary.

Lord, we thank Thee for the Holy Ghost, for His heavenly power, for His divine unction, and we pray that we may feel it today in our hearts, in our souls. Oh, most gracious God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him, all creatures here below. Praise Him above ye heavenly host. praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

Lord, we do pray that thou wouldst graciously then be with us and bless us and bless our nation and bless the nations of the earth and grant that the truth and glory of God in the gospel may shine forth throughout the nations of the earth. We pray for thy church O Lord, in those nations of the earth, China and Iran, and in other places in the Middle East in particular, where darkness reigns, where the people of God are persecuted, even unto death, Lord, we pray that thou wouldst send out thy light and thy truth, and graciously work, even as thou hast promised in thy word, I will work, and who shall let it?

O Lord, we do pray that thou wouldst let thy work appear unto thy servants and thy glory unto their children. We see, Lord, in our own society the great powers of Antichrist that are working, that are manifested. Lord, we pray that thou wouldst arise, that thou wouldst hear the cries of thy little remnant, that thou wouldst make bare thine holy arm in the gospel, that thou wouldst pull down the strongholds of Satan. Hear us, O Lord, we do humbly beseech thee for thy great namesake. Appear for us. We have nothing to bring before thee, Lord. We have no righteousness of our own. We are all as an unclean thing, but we plead with thee for Jesus Christ's sake, that there was a rise.

We pray, O Lord, that where there is war and bloodshed, that thou wouldst bring to nought the counsels of the ungodly and grant a deliverance from war, if it could but please thee. Lord, be with us now as we turn to thy holy word. Come and open thy word to our heart and to our understanding. Grant us hearing ears, seeing eyes, wise and understanding hearts. We ask with the forgiveness of all sin, for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

Let us now sing together hymn number five. The tune is Dublin, 129. The Lord descending from above invites his children near while power and truth and boundless love display their glories here.

Hymn number five, tune Dublin, 129.

Greatly feeling to need the Lord's gracious help, I direct your attention to the chapter that we've read, Psalm 145, and we'll read verse three for our text. Psalm 145, verse three. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable. Great is the Lord.

We notice at the top, David's psalm of praise. I understand in the original Hebrew, it's called Tehillah, which in the Hebrew means Hallelujah, praise ye the Lord. And it's the only psalm that is actually entitled Tehillah. Praise ye the Lord, praise ye Jehovah, the Eternal, the Almighty God of Heaven.

We've just sung in our opening hymn, Great God, how infinite art thou, what worthless worms are we. Great God, see great is Lord. The Apostle, he says that he's God over all and blessed for evermore. God over all, blessed for evermore.

You know there's that beautiful and well-known word concerning the Eternal God. He says the Eternal God is thy refuge. and underneath are the everlasting arms, the eternal God. He that is without beginning and without ending. In Isaiah chapter 45, it speaks on a number of occasions, I am God and there is none else. There is no God beside me.

You know, my beloved friends, if we believe that God is infinite, there cannot be room for any other God. We live in a day, you young friends, we live in a day when men believe that there are a multitude of gods and they are all equal and they're all of relevance.

I bumped into a lady when we lived at East Hothley, a very nice lady that was frequently attending the Church of England. She got into a conversation and she was saying how all gods are the same. I said, well, my Bible doesn't tell me that. Oh dear, she said, what do you mean? I said, the Bible says there is only one true God and he is the eternal God. And there's only one Saviour, and that is God's only begotten Son, our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

And she was absolutely shocked that I would say such a thing. But my beloved friends, that is what the Word of God teaches us. There is one God and one mediator between God and man, the man, Christ Jesus, who gave his life at ransom for all to be testified in due time. And this is reflected in the holy law of God, we spoke of that this morning, the Ten Commandments. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Indeed, to worship any other god, in God's word, it's called idolatry. It's idol worship. There's just this one true and living God.

And we read in scripture, Alleluia, for the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth. Just think for a moment my beloved friends of the meaning of the word Omnipotent. We often explain it to you, Omnipotent. Omni is a prefix to a word Which means universal and complete Potent means power So omnipotent means universal and complete power Now you cannot have more than one who has universal and complete power Because as soon as you have another one, they're no longer the omnipotent

But my beloved friends, the God of the Bible, the God of truth, the God of righteousness is omnipotent. Jesus reflects that in those words that he spoke to the disciples before he ascended up into heaven. And he said to them, all power, not some power, all power is given unto me. in heaven and in earth, all power. And the word of God declares, it is he that has made us and not we ourselves. He's the creator of the heavens and the earth. It is he that has made us and not we ourselves.

Of course, the common belief today is evolution. That's a proper little nugget of the devil, isn't it? So that we can deny there is a God. If there's no creation, there's no God. But my beloved friends, there is a God. It is He that hath made us and not we ourselves. You know, the wonderful glory of God, the creation is attributed unto God, unto God the Father, unto God the Son, unto God the Holy Ghost, and these three are one, one blessed infinite almighty and eternal God. We do not worship three gods, we worship one God. One God.

We read in Colossians chapter one, concerning our Lord Jesus Christ, and this speaks of the greatness of our God, giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in life. God our Father, God our Father chose a people from the ruins of the Adam fall. we read in scripture that it was a number that no man can number from every kingdom tribe and tongue and people within the whole world, people chosen by God. Hence he says giving thanks unto the father which has made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance

Again, just look at the words that are used. Words are very important. An inheritance. What does it mean? Well, you can't purchase an inheritance. By its very nature, it's given, it's free. When you inherit something, it's freely given to you, it's left to you. It's your inheritance. And here, we read of the blessings of free grace It's an inheritance, giving thanks unto the Father which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light.

Do we dwell enough on the infinite love of our Heavenly Father? Of course, we quite rightly dwell on the love of Jesus Christ. But you know, the Father sent the Son. He did. And I always feel that that word that we've already quoted, yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love, therefore with loving kindness have I drawn thee, I always feel there is a very specific reference there to the Father, to the eternal love of our Heavenly Father. You might say, why? Because it says, with loving kindness have I drawn thee. And the Lord Jesus said, none come except the Father draw. It's a divine act of the eternal God, giving thanks unto the Father.

And when we begin to consider the wonders of redeeming love. You see, great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable. I think it's Job that says, who by searching can find out God? And then he says, who hath delivered us from the power of darkness? We're all the children of darkness by birth. Christ has delivered us from the power of darkness. Christ himself is the light of the world and has translated us. You see this is giving thanks unto the father who has delivered us from the power of darkness and has translated us into the kingdom of his dear son. What a wonderful phrase, isn't it? Who hath translated us. It's a divine act of our Eternal Father. He hath translated us into the Kingdom of His dear Son.

You know, my beloved friends, what a wonderful thing if indeed he has translated us, he has brought us from death into life. And he speaks of his dear son here and he says, in whom. See the father has translated us into the kingdom of his dear son, in whom we have redemption. Redeemed from sin and Satan's power. Redeemed from the curse of the law. Redeemed from the bondage of sin and corruption. The Redeemer. I always feel it's a very beautiful illustration of the eternal love of Christ in the Boaz in the book of Ruth. He is called a near kinsman. He had the right of redemption. What a beautiful type of Christ. A near kinsman. The hymn writer says, brother to our souls becomes a near kinsman. The eternal son of the eternal father becomes a near kinsman. He has the right of redemption. You might say, what does it mean? It means that the son of God was made flesh and dwelt among us. And in so doing, He became a near kinsman. He had the right of redemption.

And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. And we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Great is the Lord. Greatly to be praised. And His greatness is unsearchable. It's unsearchable. in whom we have redemption through His blood. Whose blood? The blood of Jesus Christ, God's Son, that cleanseth us from all sin. In whom we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins.

This great God, He's made a way whereby poor, wretched, ruined sinners Can approach unto his glorious majesty this great god of whom we read of in holy scripture who dwelleth in light inaccessible under which no man can approach unto And yet he has made a way In the person of his son manifest in the flesh See this the greatness of god in the redemption of his people

You just think for a moment of the greatness of God in the choosing of a people from the ruins of the Adam fall. God would have been just if he would have condemned the whole world to eternal perdition. it would have redounded to the glory of His justice, of His holiness, of His righteousness. But to show forth that wonderful attribute of His mercy, His loving-kindness, His compassion. God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should be saved.

Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised and his greatness is unsearchable. It's beyond our comprehension. You know the Apostle Paul when he writes to the Corinthians he speaks there that he was taken up into the third heaven and he said I saw things that were not lawful to me to proclaim and what he means is that he saw things that was so great and so wonderful that was impossible to put it into words. That's what he means.

So great is the love, the grace, the power. You see, God, he showed forth the greatness of his love in choosing a people. to redeem from lost mankind, the greatness of His love. Oh, my beloved friends, may the Lord lead us to see and to realize the greatness of the love of God in Christ, who is the image of the invisible God that is Christ, the firstborn of every creature as Christ,

We read in Psalm 89, I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth, the glorious person of Jesus Christ. We read of him in Holy Scripture, King of kings and Lord of lords, great is the Lord and great did he be praised and his greatness is unsearchable. You think of him as the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.

And you think there are the words of Jesus Christ in the eighth chapter of the book of Proverbs. And he said, by me, kings reign and princes decree justice. By me. You see this Lord God, the omnipotent reign. And Jesus said, by me, kings reign. Prince's decree justice. The Apostle Paul in the Romans he says the powers that be are ordained of God and when he said that when he wrote that they were pagan powers and he said the powers that be are ordained of God

There's another aspect of this truth found in Ecclesiastes. And what do we read in Ecclesiastes? The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord, and as rivers of water, he turns it whithersoever he will. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised. And his greatness is unsearchable. It's unsearchable. It's beyond our comprehension. That's what that means, that means unsearchable. It's beyond our comprehension.

Who is the image of the invisible God? This is Jesus Christ, the firstborn of every creature, for by him were all things created that are in heaven and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones or dominions or principality or powers, all things were created by Him and for Him, all things.

See, great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable. We can't comprehend such a great God. And then it goes on, speaking here of Jesus Christ, and He is before all things. This is the eternal God, the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. and he is before all things.

Of course it's speaking of the person of Christ, but these three are one, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, and he is before all things, and by him, that's by Jesus Christ, all things consist. He's before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church. he sitteth King forever.

He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, the speaking of his resurrection, that in all things he might have the preeminence. He's King Jesus. All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

My life's minutest circumstance is subject to thine eye. Think of the words of Jesus. The very hairs of your head are numbered. That is how minute the government of God is in the world. The very hairs of your head are numbered. Not one of them fall without your father's leave.

You see, my beloved friends, what the Lord Jesus is conveying to us there is the minute covenants of the world. Sovereign ruler of the skies. Ever gracious, ever wise. All my times. Yes, the good times and the bad times. We tend to think, well, the good times, in the hand of the Lord, but no my beloved friends, the difficult times, the times of trial, the times of perplexity, they're all in the hands of God.

The times when we suffer loss, the times perhaps when we have persecution, the times when we know darkness and bondage, all my times are in thy hands. All events at Thy command, they are. You see, for by Him were all things created that are in heaven and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created by Him and for Him.

know there's a point here friends that the apostle really makes in the romans when he says the powers that be are ordained of god therefore we are to be subject to the powers that be they're in god's hand it doesn't matter if they're heathen it doesn't matter if they're of another religion They're in the Lord's hand. He sovereignly rules. Whether they be principalities or powers, all things were created by him and for him. And he is before all things. And by him all things consist.

He great is the Lord and greatly to be praised and his greatness is unsearchable. For it pleased the Father that in him, that is in Jesus Christ, it pleased the Father that in him should all fullness dwell. There's a fullness of peace. There's a fullness of salvation. There's a fullness of redemption. There's a fullness of light. There's a fullness of love. There's a fullness of power in our Lord Jesus Christ. There's a fullness of grace. You think of those lovely words we often quote to you from John 1, and the word was made flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. Full of grace and truth.

See, great is the Lord and greatly to be praised. and His greatness is unsearchable. Having made peace through the blood of His cross, by Him to reconcile all things unto Himself, by Him I say, whether they be things in earth or things in heaven. It is this greatness of God. And you that were sometimes alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled in the body of his flesh through death to present you." What a wonderful word, isn't it? What a word of grace. To present you holy and unblameable. and unreprovable in his sight. That's what Jesus has done for his people.

You say, but I'm such a sinner. I have a heart which is deceitful about things. I'm depraved and wicked and unholy and disobedient. It's only this almighty Savior that has saved you. from all that depravity, from all that sin, from all that disobedience, He saved His people with an everlasting salvation. It is. Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised and His greatness is unsearchable.

You know the Apostle Paul in the epistle to the Romans and the chapter 11, he speaks there again so beautifully of our Lord Jesus Christ and of the greatness of God and the greatness of salvation. He says there in Romans 11, even so, verse 31, even so have these also now not believe that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy for God hath concluded them all in unbelief that is Jew and Gentile he hath concluded them all in unbelief that he might have mercy upon all that is Jew and Gentile rich and poor bond and free and then he breaks out into these beautiful words oh the depths of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding help. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, or who hath been his counselor, or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again. For of him, and through him, and to him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen. Of him, through him and to him are all things. Great is the Lord.

So David, he had some deep experimental knowledge and understanding of the greatness of this God, of the greatness of his love, of the greatness of his mercy, of the greatness of his compassion and kindness. David knew it by sweet experience. He was a poor shepherd boy and the Lord brought him by divine grace to be the king in Israel, to be the man after God's own heart. And it's in reflection of what the God of heaven had done for him that he writes this psalm, from the depths of his heart, I will extol thee my God, O King, and I will bless thy name forever and ever. Every day will I bless thee, and I will praise thy name forever and ever. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.

And in every generation, there will be those that praise the Lord. It says here in verse four, one generation shall praise thy works for another and shall declare thy mighty acts. I will speak of the glorious honor of thy majesty and of thy wondrous works. And men shall speak of the might of thy terrible acts. And I will declare thy greatness. You see this greatness of the eternal God. this greatness of his power and this greatness of his wisdom and this greatness of his love this what I think is a most beautiful expression his loving kindnesses the greatness of his loving kindnesses and where do we see this in the glorious person of his son Jesus Christ the greatness of the loving kindness of God of the compassion it says here that is he says men shall speak of thy terrible acts and I will declare thy greatness they shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness and shall sing of thy righteousness.

You just think as we come together on the first Sunday of each month that is our order isn't it? And what do we come together for? For the Lord's Supper. And what is it that we're remembering? We're remembering the loving kindness of God. We're remembering that he sent his only begotten son to this sin-cursed world. We're remembering that he was a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. We're remembering that Jesus Christ suffered and bled and died for the sins of his people. And when we do so, when we come to the Lord's table, we come by faith and we believe it was for us that he suffered and bled and died. This do in remembrance of me, for as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you do show forth the Lord's death until he come.

They shall have abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness and shall sing of thy righteousness whose righteousness the righteousness of jesus christ that glorious everlasting robe of the righteousness of christ what is it is the perfect obedience of the holy god man our lord jesus christ of the law when he was made of a woman made under the law that he might redeem them that are under the law. Oh, my beloved friends, Christ has fulfilled the law. Christ said, I come not to destroy the law, but to fulfill it. That is what he's done in his holy life.

Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised and his greatness is unsearchable. You see, I will abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness and shall sing of thy righteousness. What every one of the Lord's people have to do, and they do so by divine grace, they confess that they're sinners. They confess that they're undeserving of the Lord's mercy or his loving kindness. Why do they do that? Because the Holy Spirit has taught them that they're unrighteous, that they're sinners, that they're lost, that they're ruined. And then that same Holy Spirit reveals to them by faith the glorious person of our Lord Jesus Christ, the only Saviour of sinners.

All thy works shall praise thee, O Lord, and thy saints shall bless thee. They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom and talk of thy power. Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom. It's an everlasting kingdom. The kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And thy dominion endureth throughout all generations. the dominion of Christ. You know, when iniquity abounds on every hand, when we see, especially as we do in the day in which we live, the powers of Antichrist are so great, never forget that Jesus sits on a throne, that he's almighty. With heaven and earth at his command, he waits to answer prayer.

speaks here in verse 14, the Lord upholdeth all that fall and raiseth up all those that be bowed down. He upholds those that fall and the Lord's people do fall. We have a sinful nature, a corrupt nature, sometimes we succumb to temptation, we fall into sin, The Lord upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up those that be bowed down. When we're bowed down under a deep sense of our sinfulness, our wretchedness, and the attacks of the enemy, we're bowed down. The eyes of all wait upon thee, and they'll give us then their meat in due season, Thou openest thine hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.

That's beautiful when we look at the creation of the world. Every living thing. God feeds every living thing. Thou openest thine hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing. But you think of that in the spiritual sense of the word. By nature, every one of us is dead in trespasses and in sins. But the Lord opens his hand and satisfies the desire of every living thing.

The living in Jerusalem, those that have been born again, have been brought from death into life, thou openest thine hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing. He feeds us by his word, by the word of his grace, every living thing. The Lord is righteous in all his ways and holy in all his works.

And there may be those of you that are burdened and exercised and concerned about the church of God and the people of God and you have those personal spiritual exercises which the Lord has given you. And we read here in verse 19, this great God, he will fulfill the desire of them that fear him. He also will hear their cry and will save them. And then there's this wonderful word, the Lord preserveth all them that love him. all the wicked will he destroy.

My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever. May the Lord add his blessings. Let us now sing together hymn number 559. The tune is Darwall's 537.

The works of God proclaim. I'll read the first verse and we'll commence singing at verse two.

The works of God proclaim the greatness of his power. Jehovah is his name. The saints his name adore. All creatures are at his control. He rules and reigns from pole to pole.

Hymn 559 Commence singing at the second verse. Tune Darwall's 537.

Now may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, the sacred fellowship of the Holy Spirit, Rest and abide with us each, both now and for evermore. Amen.
