The sermon titled "Christ Exalted" by Jabez Rutt emphasizes the kingship and majesty of Jesus Christ as revealed in Psalm 72:17-19. Rutt articulates that this psalm, while initially a blessing for King Solomon, ultimately points to the greater kingship of Christ, who embodies righteousness and justice. Key points include the notion that Christ judges with equity, provides for the needy, and will one day reign over all nations, as exemplified in verses highlighting His dominion "from sea to sea" and the call for prayer and praise directed to Him. Rutt supports his arguments with references from both the Old and New Testaments, particularly emphasizing the prophetic voice of Isaiah and the fulfillment of Christ's redemptive work. The doctrinal significance lies in affirming Christ’s role as the eternal mediator and high priest, highlighting the necessity of faith, grace, and the hope found in the sovereign rule of Christ amidst worldly struggles.

Key Quotes

“His name shall endure forever. His name shall be continued as long as the sun, and men shall be blessed in him, and all nations shall call him blessed.”

“He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass, as showers that water the earth.”

“He is able to save to the uttermost all that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth.”

“Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things.”

What does the Bible say about the kingship of Christ?

The Bible teaches that Christ is the eternal King, whose reign brings righteousness and peace.

The scriptures affirm the kingship of Jesus Christ, especially in passages like Psalm 72, where it states that He will judge with righteousness and save the needy. His dominion extends from sea to sea, confirming His authority over all creation. This sovereignty is not only a future promise but a current reality, where believers experience His rule in their lives as they submit to His lordship and follow His ways.

Psalm 72:2, Psalm 72:8, Psalm 72:12-14

What does the Bible say about the sovereignty of Christ?

The Bible declares Jesus Christ as King of kings, who reigns with righteousness and justice.

The Scriptures affirm that Jesus Christ has been given dominion from sea to sea, and His kingdom will endure forever as prophesied in Psalm 72. He exercises His reign with righteousness, ensuring that He judges correctly and delivers the needy and the poor from oppression. His authority is recognized by all nations, as stated in Revelation 19, where He is depicted as the King of kings and Lord of lords, emphasizing the unending nature of His sovereign rule.

Psalm 72:17-19, Revelation 19:16

How do we know that salvation is through Christ alone?

Salvation is exclusively through Christ based on His atoning sacrifice and resurrection.

The New Testament clearly articulates that salvation is only through Jesus Christ, who is the way, the truth, and the life. He declared Himself as the only mediator between God and man, as seen in John 14:6. His sacrificial death paid the penalty for our sins, providing a way to reconciliation with God. Romans 5:1 asserts that being justified by faith in Christ grants us peace with God, emphasizing that no other means can achieve this salvation.

John 14:6, Romans 5:1, Galatians 4:4-5

How do we know that Jesus is the Savior of sinners?

Jesus is validated as the Savior through His sacrificial death and resurrection, which secured the redemption of His people.

The efficacy of Christ as the Savior is underlined in the biblical accounts of His death and resurrection. He bore the sins of His people and then rose again for their justification, ensuring that the payment for sin was fully satisfied. Romans 4:25 states that Jesus was raised for our justification, indicating that He has effectively secured the salvation of those who believe in Him. Furthermore, His role as the mediator, as highlighted in 1 Timothy 2:5, reinforces His unique position to reconcile sinners with God.

Romans 4:25, 1 Timothy 2:5

Why is the resurrection of Jesus important for Christians?

The resurrection confirms Christ's victory over sin and death, securing believers' justification.

The resurrection of Jesus is vital for Christian faith as it validates His claim to be the Son of God and heralds His victory over sin and death. Romans 4:25 states that He was raised for our justification, meaning that His resurrection proves that the sacrifice for our sins was accepted by the Father. It assures believers of their future resurrection and eternal life. The resurrection empowers Christians to live in the newness of life, as they are united with Christ in both His death and resurrection.

Romans 4:25, 1 Corinthians 15:20-22

Why is the resurrection of Christ important for Christians?

The resurrection of Christ validates our faith and guarantees our own resurrection and eternal life.

The resurrection of Christ is central to Christian faith as it signifies His victory over sin and death. According to 1 Corinthians 15:20-22, just as in Adam all die, in Christ all will be made alive, establishing the foundation for the hope of eternal life for believers. This event not only affirms that Christ's sacrifice was adequate for atonement but also serves as a promise that those who are united with Him will share in the resurrection. Thus, the resurrection is a cornerstone of the Gospel message, indicating that death has been defeated and believers can now live in the assurance of eternal life with God.

1 Corinthians 15:20-22

What is the significance of Christ being called the King of Righteousness?

Christ as the King of Righteousness signifies His perfect holiness and authority to judge and save.

Christ is referred to as the King of Righteousness, which underscores His divine authority and perfect nature. As stated in Hebrews 7:2, this title reflects His role in administering justice and grace. His righteousness is imputed to believers, making them accepted before God. The psalmist highlights that He will judge the poor with righteousness, indicating Christ's compassionate governance that uplifts the needy and marginalized. This understanding is foundational for believers who seek to walk in His righteousness and reflect His character.

Hebrews 7:2, Psalm 72:4

What does the Bible say about the covenant of grace?

The covenant of grace is the means through which God provides salvation to His people through Christ.

The covenant of grace signifies God's unchanging promise to save His people through the work of Jesus Christ, sealed by His blood. This covenant is rooted in God's sovereign choice and is reflected in passages such as Hebrews 13:20, which calls Jesus the great shepherd of the sheep, brought back from the dead. Through this covenant, believers receive forgiveness of sins and the promise of eternal life based solely on faith in Christ's finished work. The significance of this covenant is immense as it establishes a direct, unbreakable relationship between God and His people, affirming His faithfulness and mercy towards those He has chosen.

Hebrews 13:20

Why should we pray in the name of Jesus?

Praying in Jesus' name aligns our requests with His will and acknowledges His mediatorial role.

Praying in the name of Jesus is essential for believers as it recognizes His authority as our mediator and high priest. As Hebrews 4:14-16 explains, we are encouraged to approach the throne of grace confidently through Christ. This practice aligns our prayers with His will, acknowledging that only through Him can we expect to receive mercy and grace. The name of Jesus carries weight because it embodies His redemptive work, which assures us that our prayers, offered in faith, will be heard and responded to by God.

John 14:13-14, Hebrews 4:14-16

Why is Jesus called the King of Righteousness?

Jesus is called the King of Righteousness because He embodies perfect righteousness and judges with equity.

The title 'King of Righteousness' ascribed to Jesus emphasizes His divine nature and His fulfillment of the law on behalf of His people. As seen in Psalm 72, He judges with righteousness, ensuring that the needy are cared for and oppression is broken. This righteousness is not merely theoretical; it is demonstrated by Christ through His life, death, and resurrection. When believers place their trust in Him, they receive His righteousness and are justified before God. Hebrews 7:2 also correlates with this title, affirming that Jesus, as our high priest, upholds a kingdom characterized by righteousness, contrasting the fallen nature of the world.

Psalm 72:2, Hebrews 7:2

Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things, and blessed be his glorious name forever, and let the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen and amen. we notice here the last verse it says the prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended. It's very fitting that this psalm is a concluding one to David the king of Israel the man after God's own heart and at the heading of the psalm it says a psalm for Solomon and there's no doubt that these blessings contained here in this psalm were the desire of David for his son Solomon when he should reign as king over Israel. But you know friends though in some little measure these prayers were fulfilled in Solomon but there's a far greater than Solomon here because these beautiful words relate to the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ the King of Israel. We read in Psalm Number two, yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. And this is the king that is spoken of here. It's the same in Psalm 45. When the psalmist, he said, my heart is indicted in good matter. I speak of the things that I've made touching the king. My tongue is a pen of a ready writer. And then he goes on to beautifully speak of and speak to our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. The pen of a ready writer. So he starts this by saying, give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king's son. One of the glorious names that is given to Jesus Christ in Holy Scripture is King of Righteousness. King of Righteousness. The Lord Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God that was manifest in the flesh. The Lord Jesus Christ is that person that is spoken of in Galatians chapter 4 and verse 4. when it says made of a woman, made under the law, that he might redeem them that are under the law. And in that, when he lived that holy life as a man here upon earth, and in that holy life that he lived, in that holy law that he fulfilled, when he lived that holy life, is the righteousness of the Lord's people. It's the righteousness of Jesus Christ that by faith becomes the believers. Abraham believed God and it was accounted unto him for righteousness. He received that glorious everlasting robe of the righteousness of God when he believed. And so every believer receives that glorious everlasting robe of His righteousness. It becomes theirs by faith. They are taught by the Spirit that they have no unrighteousness. They are taught by the Spirit, each one of the Lord's living family, that they're sinners. And that they're taught by the Spirit and as they go on in life's journey, They realize more and more that they're sinners. That they have a corrupt sinful heart. They have the old man of sin. They have that conflict within them. The new man of grace desires holiness and righteousness. Desires to please the Lord and to follow the Lord. But the old man of sin desires the world. It does. And the things of the world. That's his element. But the new man of grace Desires Christ. Desires to see him, to behold him. To behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. That's the new man of grace. That's what he longs for. Now, we read then here of this glorious person of Jesus, the Son of God, that was manifest in the flesh. He says in verse two, he shall judge thy people with righteousness and thy poor with judgment. Judge thy people with righteousness and the poor with judgment. He makes no mistakes. You know, it says in verse 4 as well, He shall judge the poor of the people. He shall save the children of the needy and shall break in pieces the oppressor. Who? Jesus Christ. We read in Isaiah chapter 41 when the poor and needy seek water and there is none and their tongue faileth for thirst. I the Lord will hear them. Isaiah 41 verse 17. I the Lord will hear them. I the God of Israel will not forsake them. I will open rivers in high places. These rivers of the everlasting love of God in Christ. I will open rivers in high places and fountains in the midst of the valleys. I will make the wilderness pools of water and the dry land springs of water. So where there was a wilderness, there'll be a verdant pasture. And what does it mean in the spiritual sense? He'll pour forth the Holy Ghost and those rivers of the everlasting love of God By the Holy Ghost, the Holy Ghost is likened again and again unto living water. He says, I will plant in the wilderness. That's in this world. I will plant in the wilderness the cedar, the shitter, and the myrtle in the oil tree. I will set in the desert the fir tree and the pine and the box tree together that they may see and know. So the Lord will gather his people. He will water them. in the wilderness of this world that they may see and know and consider and understand together that the hand of the Lord hath done this and the Holy One of Israel hath created it. You see these are the things that Jesus Christ will do. We live in a day of grace. We live in a day of grace. We read again and again in the Old Testament in that day In that day, some of the prophecies, you read it again and again, in that day. What day? The day of grace, the day in which we live. The day of grace stretches from the first coming to the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. And it's during that day of grace that the Lord will gather his children unto himself. And his children because of the divine work of the spirit in their heart. It doesn't matter whether they're rich or whether they're poor in earthly things, they will all become poor in themselves. They will all become empty in themselves. And when the spirit is poured upon them from on high, that's what we read of in Isaiah, then the wilderness will become a fruitful field, the desert shall blossom as the rose. We read here in verse six, he shall come down like rain upon the mown grass, as showers that water the earth. In his days shall the righteous flourish and the abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth. This is the glorious person of Jesus Christ in his days. You see, the righteous, the Lord's people. We spoke quite extensively this morning upon those that are ungodly and those that are unrighteous and the solemn end of the ungodly and the unrighteous. But here it speaks of the righteous. It's those people that have been born again of the Holy Ghost and have been brought to repent of their sins and to believe in Jesus Christ and to follow Jesus Christ and to let go of everything for Jesus Christ's sake. It's the wonderful power of divine love that does that. He shall come down like rain upon the mung grass and as showers that water the earth Who were? Christ were. He came down from heaven to earth. He lived here as a man, but ever since that day, and the outpouring of the Spirit on the day of Pentecost, he comes down constantly by the Spirit into the hearts, into the assemblies of his people, where he gives them a spirit of worship, he gives them a spirit of repentance, he gives them a spirit of faith to believe, and their souls are fed and watered in the church of God, among the people of God, under the ministry of the word. He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass. You know, when you cut grass and it rains on it, there's a beautiful smell. There's a beautiful smell. This is speaking of Christ. His name shall be His ointment poured forth. beautiful savour, an unction that rests on the spirit of the Lord's people. In his days, verse 7, in his days shall the righteous flourish and abundance of peace so long as the moon enduring. The peace of God that passes all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Jesus Christ our Lord. The peace of God. Where does that come from? It comes from our Lord Jesus Christ. It comes from the cross of Christ. The peace Jesus said unto his disciples, my peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you. Not as the world giveth, give I unto you. My mind It just goes to those beautiful prophecies in Ezekiel. And in Ezekiel 37, we have the vision of the valley of dry bones. And he says, this is the whole house of Israel. And he said to Ezekiel, can these dry bones live? And Ezekiel said, O Lord God, thou knowest. Again, he said unto me, prophesy upon these bones and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus saith the Lord God unto these bones, behold, I will cause breath to enter into you and you shall live. I will lay sinews upon you and will bring up flesh upon you and cover you with skin. This is speaking of the Lord's people who were dead in trespasses and in sins. And when the Lord comes and when the Spirit enters their heart, And when the Holy Ghost teaches them their lost condition, and then leads them by faith unto Jesus Christ, and they become followers of him. So I prophesied, says Ezekiel, as I was commanded, and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold, a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone. You see, and he goes on, and he says, so I prophesied, And as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood upon their feet an exceeding great army. This is the whole church of God. Then he said unto me, son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say our bones are dried, our hope is lost. We are cut off for our parts. Therefore prophesy and so unto them, thus saith the Lord God. Behold, O my people, I will open your graves and cause you to come up out of your graves and bring you into the land of Israel, into that land that floweth with milk and honey, into the land of the everlasting love of God in Christ. And you shall know that I am the Lord when I have opened your graves, when I have quickened your souls. And verse 14, he says, and shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land. Then shall ye know that I, the Lord, have spoken it and performed it, saith the Lord. It goes on in that same chapter in verse 24. And David, my servant, that's not David himself. Ezekiel prophesied long after David. This is the Lord Jesus Christ, who was born of the seed of David. And David, my servant, shall be king over them. And they all shall have one shepherd. They shall also walk in my judgments and observe my statutes and do them. And they shall dwell in the land that is in the land of grace. And that I have given unto Jacob, my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt. And they shall dwell therein, even they and their children, their children's children forever. and my servant David shall be their prince forever. Moreover, I will make a covenant of peace with them. It shall be an everlasting covenant with them. And I will place them and multiply them and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them forevermore. These wonderful promises of God are being fulfilled in the day in which we live. and they will be fulfilled all the way through this New Testament day. We read in Revelation chapter six, and he, that's Christ, shall go forth conquering and to conquer. That's what David means in Psalm 45. Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O most mighty. He's praying to Christ. Let thine arrow be sharp in the heart of the king's enemies, and the people shall be subdued under them. That's the Lord's people. They'll be brought into subjection to Christ, to own him as King of kings and Lord of lords. In verse eight, here in Psalm 72, he shall have dominion also from sea to sea and from the river unto the ends of the earth. Christ will have dominion. will have dominion forever and ever. My mind it just goes to the Lord's servant Daniel and in the book of Daniel we read there in chapter 7 and it says in verses 13 and 14 I saw in night visions and behold one like the son of man that of course is Christ came with the clouds of heaven and came to the ancient of days, and they brought him near unto him, and there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages should serve him. And his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed." And then it goes on to say, In verse 27, and the kingdom and dominion and greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him. All dominions shall serve and obey him. It says in verse 11, all kings shall fall down before him all nations shall serve him all kings shall fall down unto him. In Revelation chapter 19 we see Christ come in a second time to judge the world in righteousness and it says he hath on his vesture a name written king of kings and lord of lords. Never forget that my beloved friend that Jesus is King of kings and Lord of lords. Verse 12, he says, for he shall deliver the needy when he cryeth and the poor also in him that hath no helper. He shall spare the poor and needy and shall save the souls of the needy. He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence and precious shall their blood be in his sight, he shall spare the poor and needy. You know, when the Holy Spirit begins to work in the heart, when the Holy Spirit convicts and convinces of sin, when the Holy Spirit gives spiritual life and light, you begin to feel your poverty. You begin to feel your sinfulness. You begin to feel the corruption of your nature. You're poor. David says in one of his Psalms, as for me, I am poor and needy. How many in this chapel this afternoon, you have to confess, I am poor and needy. This is not speaking of earthly wealth. No, this is speaking of an inward poverty. Jesus said, blessed are the poor in spirit. Blessed are the poor in spirit. He shall save the poor and needy and shall save the souls of the needy. Jesus will. Jesus is the way to God. Jesus is the way to bliss. In this way, the saints have trod down from Adam's day to this. Verse 15, and he says, and he shall live, and he shall live. And to him shall be given the gold of Sheba. Prayer all shall be made for him. I believe that that really should read, prayer all shall be made to him, because he's the great high priest of the church, and he sits in heaven, our great high priest. And as the apostle says, that as he sits there at the right hand of the Father, let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. How can we come boldly? We're poor, wretched sinners. By faith in Jesus Christ, by faith in his precious blood, by faith in his glorious righteousness, by faith in his almighty power, the only potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, that's Jesus Christ. And with God, nothing shall be impossible. You may have things in your life, things in your circumstances, things in your inner spiritual life, in your soul, and they seem impossible, but with the Lord Jesus Christ, nothing shall be. Impossible. He is able to save to the uttermost all that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth, seeing he ever liveth. This is our great high priest. You know, it says in verse 14, he shall redeem their souls from deceit and violence, and precious shall their blood be in his sight, and he shall live. What is this point to do in Christ? It is pointing to Jesus who suffered and bled and died for our sins but rose again for our justification. He had destroyed death and him that had the power of death but is the devil. He's destroyed the devil. He's destroyed the power of the devil. He's destroyed death. He's destroyed the power of death. Christ has done it. When he suffered and bled and died and rose again and then ascended into glory. You know, when man fell, when man fell, heaven was shot. We read in the book of Genesis how the Lord put that fiery flaming sword of divine justice in the way of the tree of life so no man could approach unto it. Heaven was closed against man because man had sinned. And nothing sinful shall ever enter into heaven. But lo, the second Adam comes. Lo, the second Adam comes. Who is the second Adam? The Lord from heaven, the Lord Jesus Christ. Just as Adam is the federal head of the human race, so Jesus Christ is the great king and head of the church. And whatever he did, he did for his church and for his people. And when he died, he died for the sins of his people. And when he rose again, he destroyed death. You know, it says, he rose again for our justification. What does that mean? Justification. He rose again for our justification. What the literal meaning of the word justification is to be declared to be without sin. That's the meaning of the word. So when it says he rose again for our justification, what does it mean? It means my beloved friends, that when he rose again, he left all the sins of the church in the grave, never to be seen. We read in prophecy, do we not? As far as the East is from the West so far, have I removed thy sins from thee, O Israel? Forever removed. Their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. And he shall live. Oh, a wonderful thing is the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. It's a declaration that the sins for which he died for, the payment has been made good. Therefore their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. Justified, forever justified. Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. and he shall live, and to him shall be given the gold of Sheba. Prayer also shall be made for him or to him continually, and daily shall he be praised. His name shall endure forever. Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, and today, and forever. That's a wonderful paraphrase of the name Jehovah. Jesus Christ is saying yesterday, that's yesterday eternal, and today, and forever. From everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. His name, the name of Jesus, his name shall endure forever. His name shall be continued as long as the sun, and men shall be blessed in Him, and all nations shall call Him blessed. Why will they? Because from every nation, kindred, tongue, and tribe, and people, there will be a people that have been redeemed and that have been brought to living faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. And men shall be blessed in Him. and all nations shall call him blessed. Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things. Think of that prophecy in Isaiah chapter nine, and his name shall be called Wonderful. It's wonderful. His name is called Wonderful because He is God manifest in the flesh. Says in that prophecy in Isaiah 9, a virgin shall be with child. A virgin shall be with child. Or as it says in Jeremiah, a woman shall encompass a man. Who has seen such a thing? Who has heard such a thing? But that is what we see in the birth of Jesus Christ. We see God manifest in the flesh. God manifest in the flesh. Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things. We see a holy child, the only holy child ever born into this world. He was born without sin, and he did no sin. Neither was guile found in his mouth. The perfect, as I always point out to you, In Psalm 37 verse 37, mark the perfect man and behold the upright for the end of that man is peace. That's Christ, the perfect man. Mark the perfect man and behold the upright, his name. And blessed be his glorious name forever. He sitteth king forever. who the apostle speaks of when he relates to the Timothy is called by grace and he says now unto the King eternal, immortal and invisible, the only true God, be honor and glory everlasting and blessed be his glorious name forever and let the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen and amen. May the Lord Add his blessing. Let us now sing together hymn 174 and the tune is Duke Street 326. Jesus is precious, says the word. What comfort does this truth afford?
