holy word of God in the prophecy of Isaiah and chapter 40. The Prophecy of Isaiah, chapter
40. Comfort ye, comfort ye my people,
saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem,
and cry unto her that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity
is pardoned, for she hath received of the Lord's hand double for
all her sins. the voice of him that crieth
in the wilderness. Prepare ye the way of the Lord.
Make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall
be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and
the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain. And
the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall
see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken it. The
voice said, cry. And he said, what shall I cry?
All flesh is grass, and all the goodness thereof is as the flower
of the field. The grass withereth, the flower
faded, because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it. Surely
the people is grass. The grass withereth, the flower
faded, but the word of our God shall stand forever. O Zion,
that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain.
O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with
strength. Lift it up, be not afraid. Say
unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God. Behold, the Lord God
will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him, Behold,
his reward is with him and his work before him. He shall feed
his flock like a shepherd. He shall gather the lambs with
his arm and carry them in his bosom and shall gently lead those
that are with him. Who hath measured the waters
in the hollow of his hand and meted out heaven with the span
and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure and weighed
the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance. Who had directed
the spirit of the Lord, or being his counsellor, hath taught him.
With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught
him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and
showed to him the way of understanding. Behold, the nations are as a
drop of a bucket, and are counted as a small dust of the balance.
Behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing, and Lebanon
is not sufficient to burn, nor the beasts thereof sufficient
for a burnt offering. All nations before him are as
nothing, and they are counted him as less than nothing and
vanity. To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will
you compare unto him? The workman mounteth a graven
image, and the goldsmith spreadeth it over with gold and casteth
silver chains. He that is so impoverished that
he hath no oblation chooseth a tree that were not wrong. He
seeketh unto him a cunning workman to prepare a graven image that
shall not be moved. Have you not known Have ye not
heard? Has it not been told you from
the beginning? Have ye not understood from the
foundations of the earth? It is he that sitteth upon the
circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof as grasshoppers,
that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them
out as a tent to dwell in, that bringeth the princes to nothing.
He maketh the judges of the earth as vanity, Yea, they shall not
be planted, yea, they shall not be sown, yea, their stock shall
not take root in the earth, and he shall also blow upon them,
and they shall wither, and the whirlwind shall take them away
as double. To whom then will you liken me,
or shall I be equal, said the Holy One? Lift up your eyes on
high, And behold, who hath created these things, that bringeth out
their host by number? He calleth them all by names,
by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power,
not one faileth. Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and
speakest, O Israel, my way is hid from the Lord, and my judgment
is passed over from my God? Hast thou not known Hast thou
not heard that the everlasting God, the Lord, the creator of
the earth, fainteth not? Neither is weary. There is no
searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint,
and to them that have no might he increases strength. Even the
youth shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly
fall. but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength,
they shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and
not be weary, and they shall walk and not faint. May the Lord bless the reading
of his own precious word. Grant to us a spirit of real
prayer. Almighty, most merciful and eternal
God of heaven, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, we bow before thy
glorious majesty. We desire grace to worship thee,
and we desire that this day thy word may be a lamp unto our feet
and a light unto our path. And we desire, O Lord, that the
grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God our Father
and the sacred fellowship of the Holy Spirit may rest and
abide upon us. Look upon us, O Lord, we pray
thee, we bow as poor sinners before thy glorious majesty.
Each one of us has to solemnly confess, born in sin, shapen
in iniquity, unrighteous, all to good. all together and thy
word declares oh lord there is none that doeth good no not one
or we do pray that thou would grant us the grace of our lord
jesus christ and grant that we may be like him that went about
doing good and that we do pray for that same spirit even the
spirit of christ we pray that the love of god may be shed abroad
in our hearts We pray that as a church and as a congregation,
we may love thee and serve thee and follow thee in our day and
in our generation. We pray, Lord, for all among
us that are in affliction and trouble and trial and perplexity.
We think, O Lord, of our dear sister expecting surgery in the
coming weeks. We commend her to thee and to
the word of thy grace and pray that thy divine support and blessing
may be given. We thank thee, O Lord, for that
successful operation upon our dear sister in this last week.
We would render thanksgiving unto thee for thy tender mercies. And Lord, that we do pray that
thou wouldst give us that grace to love each other, to serve
each other, and to bear each other's burden. We think of our
dear sister in Holland and her father on the brink of eternity. And we lovingly commend them
to thee, that thou wouldst uphold and strengthen and help them
at this anxious time. And O Lord, we do pray that thou
wouldst remember our deacons and bless them with that rich
grace that is in Christ Jesus. Remember, Lord, each one of our
brethren and sisters in church fellowship and grant thy rich
blessing. thy divine favour, and that we
may esteem each other better than ourselves to be. Remember
the little ones and the children and richly bless them with that
rich grace that is in Christ Jesus. Put the fear of the Lord,
which is the beginning of wisdom, into their hearts. Remember the
young friends and bless them indeed, and guide them by thy
counsel and teach them thy truth. bring them to live in faith in
Jesus Christ. Remember those, O Lord, that
will seek a partner in life's journey. We lovingly commend
them to Thee, that Thou art that great God that is able to do
these things. Thou didst bring Ruth unto Ballas
and Rebecca unto Isaac, and they are able to do those things today. So we lovingly commend them to
Thee. We pray for any and any particular trouble or trial or
perplexity or sorrow, that thou would help support and sustain
and strengthen them. And we pray, most gracious Lord,
that thou, in thy great mercy, would remember the parents and
give wisdom and grace to bring up their children in the nurture
and admonition of the Lord in accordance with the precepts
of thy gospel. And, O Lord, we do pray that
thou wouldst bless the families as they gather for divine worship,
and grant thy spirit and grace to be present among them. For
all things are sanctified by the word of God and prayer. Remember
all in the midst of the journey of life. We lovingly commend
them to thee, O that thou wouldst bless them indeed. Remember the
prodigals that have wandered away, and stretch out thy almighty
arms and cause them to return, we do humbly beseech of thee. And O Lord, we do pray that thou,
in thy great mercy, would remember those of us in the evening time
of life's journey. Remember us with the favour that
thou bearest unto thy people, and visit us with thy great salvation,
and prepare us to that great change which must come. Remember,
O Lord, we pray that this village can send out the light and glory
and power of the gospel in the surrounding area, that many,
many, many precious souls may yet be gathered into the sanctuary,
that this little house of prayer may be filled with hungry, longing
souls pressing into the kingdom of heaven. Let thy work appear
unto thy servants and thy glory unto their children, O Lord,
we do beseech thee. Remember all thy servants as
they labour in work and doctrine upon the walls of Zion today.
Grant that they may dip their foot in oil and be made acceptable
unto the brethren. And the word preached may be
in power, in the Holy Ghost, and with much assurance. We pray
thee, the great Lord of the harvest, to send true labourers into the
harvest and to build the walls of Jerusalem. Lord, remember,
we pray thee, remember those that labour in
word and doctrine among the nations of the earth that go forth from
us. We think of thy servant, Ian Sadler, and the great work
that he does in so many different places. in the distribution and
exposition of the Word of God in Africa, India, and in the
Eastern countries. Hear us, O Lord, we pray thee,
and grant thy rich blessing. Bless the Savannah Education
Trust in Ghana, and grant that these things may be down to the
great honour, glory, and praise of thy holy name. Remember the
Mombasa mission, and bless thy servants then, and truly prosper
them, O Lord, we pray thee, for thy great namesake. O Lord, we
do pray for our nation, that the glory and light of the gospel
may shine in the length and breadth of the nation. We pray that thou
wouldst give wisdom to our leaders, understanding to our judges and
magistrates, and that thou wouldst, rather we may see thy Sometimes,
Lord, we're tempted to think that the devil is in control.
But we know that Thou, O Lord, art in control. Thou settest
up one and puttest down another. Thou workest all things after
the counsel of Thine own will. We pray, most gracious Lord,
for those war-stricken areas, tens of thousands taken from
time into eternity. We pray that those bring to naught
the counsels of the ungodly, and grant us just peace, we do
humbly pray thee. O Lord, we do thank thee for
thy word, for thy gospel, for thy grace, for Jesus Christ,
for the little house of prayer that thou hast granted to us.
We do maintain this thing. We thank thee for the wonderful
glory of thee, the eternal Word that was made flesh and dwelt
among us. We thank Thee for the holy life He lived, and thereby
the holy law He fulfilled, and thereby the bringing in of everlasting
righteousness. We thank Thee for the precious
sin that's only blood, of that glorious atonement of Jesus Christ
on the cross of Calvary. We thank Thee that He died for
our sins rose again for our justification, and has now bodily ascended into
heaven and is seated at thy right hand. Come and touch one's lips
with a light bulb from off the heavenly altar. We ask for Jesus
Christ's Let us continue by singing together
hymn number 690. The tune is Hillmartin 713. Of wings of love the saviour

and praised him still, and she embraced him. Greatly feeling to need the Lord's
gracious help, direct your attention to the prophecy of Isaiah chapter
40 and we'll read verses 1 and 2 for our text. Isaiah chapter 40 verses 1 and
2. Comfort ye Comfort ye my people, saith your
God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem,
and cry unto her that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity
is pardoned. For she hath received of the
Lord's hand double for all her sins. Several of the Puritans used
to refer to the prophecy of Isaiah as the gospel according to Isaiah. And the reason being that the
prophecy of Isaiah is so full of our Lord Jesus Christ and
so full of the wonderful days that would follow the sacrifice
of Christ on the cross of Calvary. you take for instance Isaiah
chapter 53 and how beautiful and it sets before us the cross
of Christ, the sufferings of Christ and that he was wounded
for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities. But there
are many wonderful and precious promises also in the chapters
after this one concerning Zion the church of the living God
the future prosperity of Zion and it's full of precious promises. You think of Isaiah 43, I will
bring thy sons from far and thy daughters from the ends of the
earth and they shall come from the north and from the south
and from the east and from the west. We see these wonderful
promises of the prosperity of Zion and that the Lord would
make bare his holy hand. Now I want to look at this word
in what we might say the context this morning, and then perhaps
this afternoon we'll look more directly at the essence of what
is in our text in verses 1 and 2. And it starts off here, Comfort
ye my people, saith your God. And in John's Gospel chapters
14, 15 and 16, what is known as the valedictory discourse
of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus speaks there,
he promises the comforter, but I will send the comforter unto
you. And of course he makes it clear,
even the spirit of truth, Holy Ghost. You know there can be
no real true spiritual comfort in the heart except by the Holy
Ghost. There can be no real true understanding
on our part of the truth except the Holy Ghost opens our understanding
and enlightens us and brings his life and power into the soul
and dwells in the heart. knew hath he quickened who were
dead in trespasses and in sin. The Lord Jesus said except a
man be born of water and of the spirit he cannot enter the kingdom
of heaven. So these are vital fundamental
truths of our most holy faith. The apostle Paul in his epistles
he says no man can say that Jesus Christ is Lord but by the Holy
Ghost. Romans chapter 8 he says if any
man have not the Spirit of Christ and by that he means the Holy
Ghost, if any man have not the Spirit of Christ he is none of
his. All my beloved friends we set
these things before you that you might understand the vital
need of the divine work of the Holy Ghost in the heart. how we need that divine work
of the Spirit of God. The Lord Jesus in those three
chapters in John's Gospel, he goes on to speak in chapter 16,
he says, when he the Spirit of truth is come, he will convince
the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment. When he is come. will convince
that is a very strong word it actually says in the text of
scripture he will reprove the world of sin but the marginal
reference gives an alternative rendering of convince which i
confess i prefer he will convince the world of sin when he comes
to a sinner's heart he'll convince them of their sin and when he
convinces them of their sin they then feel their need of a savior
And here in this chapter, we read in verse three, the voice
of him that crieth in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord,
make straight in the desert a highway for our God. This, of course,
is quoted in the New Testament. It's John the Baptist, who was the forerunner of our
Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. When the King visits another
country, he will send ambassadors before him to prepare the work,
to make sure everything is in place for his visit and that
everything runs smoothly. And really, when the King of
Kings, our Lord Jesus Christ, came to this sinful world, sent John the Baptist before
him. And the Lord Jesus, although John the Baptist by the great
and mighty people was greatly despised, he was in the wilderness,
the people gathered unto him, he prepared the way of the Lord,
make straight in the desert a highway for our God. And the Lord Jesus
testifies of John the Baptist that there was not a greater
man born of a woman than John the Baptist, the herald of salvation. He warned men and women that
the kingdom of heaven was come. He pointed his disciples to Christ. He said, behold the Lamb of God,
which taketh away the sin of the world. Prepare ye way of
the Lord and it speaks here by way of prophecy in verse 4 of
when Christ comes every valley shall be exalted and every mountain
and hill shall be made low and the crooked shall be made straight
and the rough places plain and the glory of the Lord shall be
revealed when Christ comes and he has come and these wonderful
things have happened and those crooked things that we couldn't
possibly lay straight. The condemnation of sin, the
curse of the law. He makes those crooked things
straight. Who does Jesus? He makes those crooked things
straight. The crooked shall be made straight,
and the rough places plain, and the glory of the Lord shall be
revealed. John says, doesn't he, in the
beginning of his gospel, and the word was made flesh and dwelt
among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten
of the Father, full of grace. we beheld his glory, the glory
as of the only begotten of the Father. My beloved friends, have
you beheld the glory of Christ? Have you beheld the glory of
Christ? Have you beheld that wonder of
wondrous of God manifest in the flesh? Have you beheld in Christ
the law fulfilled, honored and magnified? beheld. Has these things been
revealed unto you by the Holy Ghost? One of the great comforting
works of the Holy Ghost is that He would testify of me. They're
the words of Christ. He would testify of me. He would
take of the things of Jesus and reveal them unto you. The glory of the Lord shall be
revealed. You know, friends, real religion
is something that is revealed. It's revealed by the Holy Ghost. And the apostle Paul, in the
second chapter of the first epistle to the Corinthians, he says in
verse nine, and he's quoting from Isaiah, I have not seen
nor ear heard, neither have entered the heart of man, Things which
God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed
them unto us by his Spirit. For the Spirit searcheth all
things, yea, the deep things of God. The Spirit searcheth
all things, yea, the deep things of God. You think of the, in
the book of Psalms it says, deep calleth unto deep. at the noise
of thy waterspouts. Deep calleth unto deep. And it's
the spirit that reveals. What does it mean then when it
says deep calleth unto deep? There is the depth of a poor
sinner in all their wretchedness, filthiness, uncleanness, in their
lost state and condition. Utterly under the curse of God.
Under condemnation. What a deep that is. when we
come under conviction of sin and a deep sense of our wretchedness
and sinfulness. Let us not run away, my beloved
friends, with that curious notion that this is only in the beginning
of a Christian's experience. This convicting and conviction
of sin goes on right through our lives, that the Apostle Paul
had been in the way many, many years when he wrote Romans 7. And in Romans 7 he says, O wretched
man that I am. Why? He says, that which I would
I do not, that which I would not I do. I find a law within
my members that when I would do good, evil is present with
me. It was a great trial to the dear man of God. Well then, you
think of that deep, of our own sinfulness, unrighteousness,
but then there's an answer indeed. Is the eternal love of God in
Jesus Christ. Is the precious sin atoning sacrifice
of our Lord Jesus on Calvary. Is the shedding of his precious
blood. What a deep there is there. He died for our sins. He took
our sins and he nailed them to his cross. He died for our sins. He rose again for our justification. For the Spirit searches all things,
yea, the deep things of God. He that knew no sin was made
sin, as our Lord Jesus Christ. He that is the Living One, in
Him is eternal life, yea, He knew death. The Lord of life
experienced death, tremendous What a deep there is there. But
the greater deep, he rose from the dead. He swallowed up death
in victory. You see, deep calleth unto deep.
A poor sinner in all their wretchedness, crying unto the God of heaven,
from the depths of their soul, unto the Lord Jesus Christ. And oh, the depth of his precious
sin atoning sacrifice. His blood, His resurrection from
the dead, His ascension into glory, He hath made a new and
a living way into the holy place. You see, the Spirit searcheth
all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth
the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him,
Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Which things also we speak not
in the word which man's wisdom teaches, but which the Holy Ghost
teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. Now look
how clearly the Apostle opens this truth here. But the natural
man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God, For they
are foolishness unto him, neither can he know them, because they
are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judges
all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. The natural man receives not
the things of the Spirit of God. see and these things that we
have here in this 40th of my Zion and he says in the sixth
verse the voice said cry and he said what shall I cry all
flesh is grass and all the goodliness thereof
is as the flower of the field the grass withereth the flower
fadeth because the Spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it. You see these wonderful precious
truths of our frail and wretched condition. We're likened unto
grass. We're likened unto flower that
fadeth. We all disfade of the leaf, the
scripture says. But then it speaks in verse 9,
O Zion, that bring us good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain. Oh, Jerusalem, these are names
given to the church of God, Zion, Jerusalem. Of course, they were
geographical places, but it means that this little chapel here
is one of the hills of Zion. It's part of the city of Jerusalem.
bring good tidings. You think of the words that the
Lord spake to the shepherds, I bring you good tidings of great
joy which shall be unto you and unto all people. Oh Jerusalem,
the good tidings of free grace, the good tidings of everlasting
love to man, And the exhortation here, O Zion,
that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain.
O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with
strength. Lift it up, be not afraid. Say
unto the cities of Judah, behold your God. Behold your God manifest
in the flesh. Behold the love of your eternal
Father. God so loved the world, he gave
his only begotten Son. Behold him. Behold the Lord Jesus
Christ as your prophet, your priest and your king. Behold
him as that one that is able to save to the uttermost all
that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth. And the exhortation here to Zion,
lift up thy voice with strength. Lift it up. Be not afraid. Say, under the cities of Judah,
behold your God, behold your God, behold that salvation, that glorious salvation, that
redeeming love of our God in the Son of God being made flesh
and dwelling among us. It says in verse 10, behold the
Lord God will come with strong hands We read it on Tuesday evening,
didn't we, in Psalm 89. And it says there, I have laid
help upon one that is mighty. I have laid help upon one that
is mighty. That one that is mighty is our Lord Jesus Christ. He
laid help. And that help is in Jesus Christ. Poor sinner, that help is in
Christ. Behold your God. Jesus is the
eternal Son of God. Jesus is able to save to the
uttermost all that come unto God by him. Say unto the cities
of Judah, behold your God. Jesus has swallowed up death
in victory. Jesus has brought life and immortality to light and life. Jesus is the way to God. Jesus
is the way to bliss. It says here, behold, the Lord
God will come. He's come, my beloved friends,
but he will come again. Behold, the Lord God will come
with strong hand and his arm shall rule for him. Behold, his
reward is with him and his work before him. Eternal life at his
request to every soul is given. And then we have something very
tender and precious here. Verse 11. He shall feed his flock like
a shepherd. He shall gather the lambs with
his arm and carry them in his bosom and shall gently lead those
that are with you. This is our Lord Jesus Christ,
the great Shepherd of Israel. Have you been able to say with
David, the Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want? Why? Because the Lord is my Shepherd.
You know everything in that psalm hangs on that first little clause,
the Lord is my Shepherd. and you could almost put in there,
therefore I shall not want. He shall feed his flock like
a shepherd. He shall gather the lambs with
his arm and carry them in his bosom and shall gently leave
those that are with the arm. These things are written to comfort
of the Lord's living family. Comfort ye, comfort ye my people,
saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem,
and cry unto her that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity
is pardoned, for she hath received of the Lord's hand double for
all her sins. Friends, I'm going to have to
give over, I'm afraid. I've a lot of pain in my right
chest. May the Lord add his blessing. Let us now sing together hymn
543, the tune is Everlasting Love. 942. Jesus is the way to God. Jesus
is the way to bliss. In this way the church has trod
down from Adam's day to this. Jesus is the living way. All
beside to ruin lead. They are safe and only they who
are one in Christ their head. 543, to an everlasting love,
942. ? He has made the flesh his own
? ? And the blood of Jesus his own ? ? His mercy is unending
? ? Oh, what a sight ? ? May our strength and our faith
continue ? ? Through the power of Christ our King ? ? Jesus,
hear our prayer ? O'er the earth and the heav'nly
reign, O'er the earth and the heav'nly reign, O'er the earth
and the heav'nly reign, O'er the earth and the heav'nly reign,
O'er the earth and the heav'nly reign, O'er the earth and the
heav'nly reign, O'er the earth and the heav'nly reign, O'er
the earth and the heav'nly reign, O'er the earth and the heav'nly
reign, O'er the earth and the heav'nly reign, O'er the earth
and the heav'nly reign, O'er the earth and the heav'nly reign,
O'er the earth and the heav'nly reign, O'er the earth and the
heav'nly reign, O'er the earth and the heav'nly reign, O'er
the earth and the heav'nly reign, O'er the earth and the heav'nly
reign, O'er ? And evermore ? ? Sons and daughters
? ? Raise forth from the grave ? O say does that star-spangled
banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of Jesus is the way of shame. Give us hope this day, O God.
? It gives time for things to grow
? ? Jesus is the way of peace ? ?
Make a way to where he lies ? ? Is this where the world's been placed? ? ? Have you believed in nature's
grace? ? ? O'er the land that's so heavenly
? ? O'er the land that's so heavenly ? Now may the grace of our Lord
Jesus Christ the love of God the Father, the sacred fellowship
of the Holy Spirit. Rest and abide with us each.
Amen.
