Genesis

In his sermon titled "Christ Appears From the Grave," Eric Lutter examines the theological implications of the third day of Creation as recorded in Genesis 1:9-13, drawing parallels to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Lutter argues that just as the dry land appeared from the gathered waters on the third day, Christ rose from the grave, demonstrating victory over sin and death. He references Mark 16, where Christ's appearances affirm His resurrection, and underscores that this resurrection is integral for the justification of believers, signifying the acceptance of Christ's sacrifice by God. The practical significance lies in the understanding that all of creation points to the redemptive work of Christ, wherein believers find their spiritual life and fruitfulness, affirming central Reformed tenets such as total depravity, unconditional election, and the believer's union with Christ.

shall be, I am His and He is mine. But while God and I shall
be, I am his and he is mine. Thank you. All right. All right, brethren, let's go
to Genesis chapter 1. Genesis chapter 1. I'm going to read our text, verses
9 through 13. And God said, let the waters
under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and
let the dry land appear, and it was so. And God called the
dry land earth, and the gathering together of the waters called
he seas. And God saw that it was good. And God said, let the earth bring
forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding
fruit after his kind. whose seed is in itself upon
the earth, and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass,
an herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit,
whose seed was in itself after his kind. And God saw that it
was good. And the evening and the morning
were the third day. Now what is significant about
the third day? Let me put it this way. What
do you think of when you think of, in the scriptures, the third
day? You likely think of the resurrection
of our Lord. Our Lord was raised from the
dead on the third day. And so that on that third day,
life sprung from the grave. Life, abundant, came forth. And life sprung from the grave. He lives. He lives. He's not
dead. He's alive. And so on the third
day, life triumphed over death. And we're told in scripture that
Christ was justified in the spirit. He was justified in the spirit.
The raising of Christ from the dead testifies to us, declares
to us that God has justified his people from all their sins
and fulfilled all the promises of God made unto us in the Lord
Jesus Christ. His sacrifice is received, it's
accepted of the Father and all your sins are put away in the
Lord Jesus Christ. All who believe Him are reconciled
unto the Father. Now when you remember that all
scripture speaks of the Lord Jesus Christ, every word in this
book testifies to us of the Lord Jesus Christ, then you know that
this creation work is testifying to us of our Lord and Savior,
Jesus Christ. So that God is declaring, from
the foundation of the world, the person and salvation work
of the Lord Jesus Christ. That's what our God is telling
us. We see in the beginning, God. Christ is the beginning
of every believer. He is the witness of scripture
here. It's testifying to us of the
Lord Jesus Christ. God said, let there be light. And there was light. Christ Jesus is the light of
man. He's the one who reveals the
Father unto us. He makes known to us the Lord.
Christ makes known to us our God. He reveals him to us. God said, let there be a firmament
in the midst of the waters and let it divide the waters from
the waters. Let there be an expansion in
the middle of the house. Let it come and divide the waters."
Well, Christ is the firmament. He's the air. He's the firmament
who covers his people. He's the one in whom we live
and move and have our being, breathing the Spirit of our God. by His firmament, by His blood,
which was shed for the sins of His people, we are reconciled
unto God. We are under that covering, that
firmament, which is Christ. And the third day, it declares
our Lord's glorious resurrection from the dead. For out of the
grave he arose, and out of his life our life springs forth abundantly. And we are made fruitful unto
our God by that same resurrection power, which raised Christ from
the dead is the resurrection power that raises you and me
from spiritual death. so that we know our God and we
are made fruitful in Christ unto our God. So the whole purpose
of creation is God declaring unto us Christ and Him crucified. It's the whole account of Christ
and Him crucified. I've titled this message, Christ
Appears from the Grave. Now prominently seen in these
two verses, and this will be where we spend the majority of
our time, as in these first two verses here, we see the appearance
of the earth brought forth out of the waters when the waters
were gathered together unto one place. Let's read those two verses
again, 9 and 10. And God said, Let the waters
under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and
let the dry land appear. And it was so. And God called
the dry land earth. and the gathering together of
the waters called he seas, and God saw that it was good." So
here we see the beginning of life on earth. As far as the
creation account goes, we see the beginning of life on earth. And it begins first with the
one great land appearing, rising up out of the watery grave. And God said, let the dry land
appear. Now from this land is born living
seed. While it's born, there's life,
there's grass. There's herbs. There's trees
bearing fruit. And from those things comes forth
seed after its kind. It's fruit of the Lord that begets
fruit of itself. And so this land is a fruitful
land, but it's not known to be fruitful. It's not known until
it comes up out of the waters. Until it rises up out of the
waters, then it becomes fruitful. You know, I picture this this
rumbling, this shaking, and out of the waters, and it comes rushing
off and flowing off of the land. And it's there, it comes up out
of the waters. But notice that it rises up out
of the waters, but not until the firmament. was made a covering
over the waters, right? Until that firmament was beaten
out over the world, that land never rose up out of that watery
grave, out from those waters which had laid in judgment. They were under darkness. They
were under judgment. But now they're described as
the waters under the heaven. under the heaven, right? Previously,
they were waters of judgment. They were without form. They
were void of any life, and they were in complete darkness. But
now, being under the heaven, after the firmament was made,
after a covering was made, this land rises up out of the waters
under heaven. It's there's been a blood atonement
made. And so this atonement having
been made, these waters have no power, no strength, nothing
to prevent this land from rising up. Nothing can prevent this
land from rising up. After the light was manifested,
and after the firmament was made, that atonement was made, on the
third day, God said, let the dry land appear. And it was so. And it's dry land. There's no
remnant of the grave on it any longer. There's no water on it.
It's dry land. It's dry. It's righteous. It's
perfect. It's complete. It's whole. It
lives. But we don't see it rising, do
we? Actually, that word isn't even
used. We see its appearance. It appears. Turn over to Mark
16. Go to Mark 16. This appearing
is how Mark describes Christ's resurrection. This appearing,
right? Let the dry land appear. And so our Lord did rise from
the dead. We're told by the angel he's
risen. He is risen from the dead, but it's his appearing to his
disciples whereby they know that he has indeed risen just as he
said. So Mark 16 verse nine. Now when
Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared. he appeared first to Mary Magdalene,
out of whom he had cast seven devils. And she went and told
them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept. And
they, when they had heard that he was alive and had been seen
of her, believed not. After that, he appeared in another
form unto two of them, as they walked and went into the country.
And they went and told the residue, but they didn't believe them
either. Verse 14, afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they
sat at meat and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness
of heart because they believed not them which had seen him after
he was risen. None of the disciples saw Christ
rise from the dead, but they knew he rose from the dead when
he appeared unto them. and they saw him, and they held
him, and they ate with him, and they knew he has risen from the
dead just as he said. How do you know that This account
in creation is true. How do you know that the land
has risen from the water, out of the water? How do you know?
Well, you just go right outside. It appears unto you. You see
it. You see the land. The scriptures tell us that in
the beginning, all the world was under the judgment of the
water. It was under judgment. It was in darkness. It was void. It was without any life. It had no form. But We know that it rose, just
as God said, because we see it. We see it. And we have no problem
going and telling anybody, the land's risen. It's risen. How
do you know it's risen? I can see it. It's appeared unto
me. I see it. And so we have the
same witness of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord is risen and
hath appeared unto Simon. He's appeared unto Simon. Luke
24, verse 34, has appeared on a sign. So this land now appears
on the third day. It's risen out of the watery
grave. Why? Judgment's been put away. The atonement, the firmament,
that covering, has been made. Blood covers and has put away
the judgment of God from the earth. And so the land of life
is raised from the dead. Raised from the dead. The waters
weren't life. They had no life in them. That
isn't created until the fifth day. But this land, which is
alive, lives. It's risen up out of the grave
and it lives and brings forth life out of itself. Now, we're told there's a gathering,
and God said, let the waters under the heaven, under that
covering, be gathered together unto one place. Let them be gathered unto one
place. Now, there's two things which
jump out to my mind about this gathering in regards to Christ,
our Savior. Turn over to 1 Corinthians 15.
Let's go to 1 Corinthians chapter 15 and we'll look at verse 3
and then verse 4 in a bit. Here the scriptures say that
Paul says, I delivered unto you, first of all, that which I also
received. How that Christ died for our
sins according to the scriptures. How did Christ die? According
to the scriptures. Yeah, but how did he die? How
did life eternal die? He died bearing our sins, to
put away our sins as the Lamb of God. To mediate a peace, a
reconciliation between God and men. his men, whom the Lord chose
and gave to him. The Father sent the Son to be
a propitiation for the sins of the people. And what does that
mean? What does it mean that Christ is a propitiation? That means that the wrath and
the judgment of God, which was upon us as children of wrath
and children of disobedience, that that wrath was taken from
us and put upon Christ the mediator. He became a propitiation, the
one who bears the wrath of God. All the wrath of God was gathered
together in one place and poured out upon the Lord Jesus Christ,
who bore his people, bearing their sins to make a sacrifice,
to make an atonement for our sins, to provide a covering for
our sins, that we in him should have life. You know, the forgiveness
of sins is not the end. That's not the end goal. That's
the beginning. The forgiveness of your sins
is the beginning. We now have life. in Him who
was risen from the grave. We have life with our God, life
in our God. We know Him, we believe Him,
we have fellowship with Him and rejoice in Him who was risen
from the dead. We bear fruit, fruits of righteousness,
faith, love, joy, peace, forgiveness in the Lord Jesus Christ. Now
here's the second thing about this gathering. All the people
that God chose and gave to Christ before the foundation of the
world, they're all gathered unto Him. All the people of God are
gathered into one. There's one land, one land, and
we're gathered in that one, that fruitful land, the Lord Jesus
Christ. We're told in the scriptures
that in Christ are all the spiritual blessings of God given. We're
told in Ephesians 1 3, the Father hath blessed us with all spiritual
blessings in heavenly places, in that firmament, in the covering,
the atonement made of Christ, in Christ. In heavenly places,
in Christ. In the atonement, under the blood,
in Christ. in Christ, amen. Heavenly places. So all the children of God are
gathered together under the blood in the Lord Jesus Christ. And this is the purpose of God
who saved us, to glorify his son. This creation is given to
glorify the name of Christ so that before him every knee shall
bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. This is His creation. This is
His world. We are His people. And we bow
before Him. And if you don't bow now, you'll
bow on the Day of Judgment. Thanks be to God for His grace
which causes us to gladly bend that knee to the Lord Jesus Christ
and confess, Lord, You're all, You are salvation. I see it from
the very foundation of the world. We're told in Ephesians 1 verse
10, that in the dispensation of the fullness of times, he
might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which
are in heaven and which are on the earth, even in him. All the children of God are gathered
into the one salvation, the one name of salvation that God has
provided under heaven, the Lord Jesus Christ. were gathered in
him. Where was Noah gathered? Where
did Noah go? When the Lord brought to him
the animals, all the two and two after their kind, as the
Lord brought to him, and then Noah went into the ark, and Noah's
wife went into the ark, and their three sons and their three wives,
eight souls, were in the ark. And then it says that the Lord
shut him in. He closed the door and judgment
came and all who were outside of the ark perished under the
judgment of God. But all who were in the ark,
that ark bearing that punishment, that ark a picture, a type of
the atonement. the covering, the sacrifice that
bore that wrath of God and protected, delivered, gave peace and comfort
and life to all who dwelled in that ark. We see it there. Noah was in the ark. We see it
with Passover. You must be covered in, under
the blood. You must be under the blood,
in the house. In the house. It wasn't enough
for the house to have the blood. You had to be in that house.
And if you were outside of that house, and you were the firstborn,
you would be slain. It says in Exodus 12, 23, for
the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians. And when
he seeth the blood upon the lintel, the top of the doorframe, and
on the two side posts, the Lord will pass over the door and will
not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite
you. Inside the house, you're delivered. You're saved. You're under the
blood. That door is Christ. And God
will not come into Christ and harm any who are in Christ. They are delivered. They have
life everlasting in the Lord Jesus Christ. Here's another
example, Shimei. Shimei is that fellow who cursed
David when David was fleeing from Jerusalem from the face
of Absalom who was conducting a coup against him. David went
out and Shimei met him and cursed David on his way out. But David
didn't put him to death when he came back as king. But he
told Solomon, He told Solomon and warned Solomon about Shimei. And you know what Solomon did
for his enemy? You know what Solomon did? He
told him, you build a house in Jerusalem and you stay in Jerusalem
and you don't go out for any reason. For the day you go out
of Jerusalem, you shall surely die. Your blood will be on your
own head. You shall surely die. Solomon
told his enemy that salvation and Shimei didn't listen. Shimei
stayed there for a while and then Shimei went out. After three
years, Shimei went out. He had some servants run off
to Gath and he went and got them. The simple little thing of getting
his servants. And when he got back, he was put to death, just
like Solomon said. We are gathered into Christ.
In Christ is life and salvation. There is our life. There is our
hope. There is our peace and our deliverance. He is our covering. You remain in the Lord Jesus
Christ. you shall be saved. And thanks
be to God, because he's the one who keeps us in there. We won't
go out. We won't go out like Shimei left. How do I get into Christ? Believe
on him. That's the testimony that God
gives us, that we are his. He reveals faith in us, which
has no hope or confidence in our own righteousness, but looks
to the provision, the Savior, the blood, provided for us in
the Lamb of God. I love this one verse. This is, again, to the same point,
in Isaiah 26. It's one of my favorite verses. Isaiah 26, verse 20 and 21. The Lord says, come, my people,
enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee. Hide thyself, as it were, for
a little moment until the indignation be overpassed. For behold, the
Lord cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of
the earth for their iniquity. And so the Lord calls His people. He gathers them into Christ,
who is the chamber. He's the provision that God has
given for the salvation of His people. We're gathered in one,
the Lord Jesus Christ. And so we preach the salvation
of God in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. He's the Savior.
He's the forgiveness of our sins. And in Him, and in Him alone,
we have life in that fruitful land who was raised from the
dead is life eternal for the people of God. Now in Mark 16
in verse 15 and 16 Our Lord said unto his disciples,
go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized
shall be saved, but he that believeth not shall be damned. We are saved
by the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, and all who believe him
are baptized into Christ. And baptism, it pictures our
union with Christ. The Scripture is telling us that
we who believe Christ, we who are His people, were in Him when
He was crucified. And you are crucified with Christ. That the body of sin might be
destroyed. You were in Christ when Christ
died on the cross. And we were in Christ when He
was buried. We were buried with Him. And
when we're baptized, we go under the water. Just like described
here in the creation day, we're under the water, under that watery
grave, and we come up out of that watery grave, believing,
calling upon the Lord Jesus Christ. It pictures what Christ has done
for us. We're gathered unto him and we're
raised together with him. When he was raised from the dead,
we, brethren, are raised from the dead, and because He lives,
we too shall live. We shall be called, we shall
hear, we shall believe, because it's the will of God for His
people in the Lord Jesus Christ. The death has no power over us.
We can't stop God, who has purpose to give His people life in the
Lord Jesus Christ. And so when we come up out of
that water, we appear. were raised in the Lord Jesus
Christ. It's a picture of what Christ
has done for all his people. And so our Lord is pictured here
in this creation day, day three, this creation account of day
three. Now, we read of this work on this day that God saw that
it was good. If you're familiar with this
chapter, you'll remember that on day two, there's no, God doesn't
say, or it doesn't say God saw that it was good. It says it
on day one, says it on day three two times, says it on day four,
and day five, and day six. And God saw that it was good. But on this day, day two, or
rather on the day two, it never said, and God saw that it was
good. What happened on day two? The
atonement was made. The atonement was made where
Christ divided his people from the waters of judgment. He delivered
his people from the judgment of God. And there was silence
from heaven. There was silence from heaven.
Our God waited until the appearing of the land. He waited until
the land rose up out of the grave. And then God said, It is good. It is good. You know, if Christ
only died, He'd be just like every other man. We read in Mark
16 that when Mary Magdalene had seen Christ, He appeared to her
and she went and told them they were mourning and weeping. They didn't see Christ. They
were mourning and weeping. And if Christ only died, There'd
be no good news to tell. We'd have nothing to say. We'd
have nothing to tell. There'd be no good news. But it's good news because Christ
rose from the dead. That's the good news, brethren.
You are justified from all your sins in the Lord Jesus Christ. The atonement has been made. How do you know God has justified
his son? He's raised him from the dead
and declares to us that the sins are put away. The judgment, there's
no judgment for those who are in Christ, gathered into the
Lord Jesus Christ. When he appeared, there's good
news, good news. Then the brethren, when he appeared
unto them, they rejoiced, and they declared the good news,
telling others what they had seen, how that Christ has risen
from the dead, him bearing fruit in the hearts of his people in
that land prepared by the Spirit. So the putting away of our sins,
that's not the end. That's only the beginning. That's
only the beginning of our life in Christ. The end goal isn't
to have the sins put away, it's life in the Lord Jesus Christ.
It's reconciliation unto the Father, to live and rejoice in
Him. Now, you'll notice that on the
third day, that's when the plant life came forth. The sun wasn't
even yet created. There's no sun. There's light. That light is Christ. There's
light. And that light is Christ. But
there's no sun life. And that tells us that all life
is dependent on God, not the sun. Scientists will tell you
that if we didn't have the sun, we'd all die. life is dependent
on God, on the true and living God who created us. But it also
tells us that God isn't interested in lining up man's understanding
of how scientific things work. that we should know and say,
oh yeah, there must be a God. He said it works this way and
this is how I see it working. No, God's not interested in lining
it up with a scientific understanding. What it shows us here is that
from the very foundation of the world, God is declaring what
to us. Christ crucified. Christ crucified. This is all a picture of Christ
himself. God couldn't be making it any
more clear to us. He's saying to us that the light
is Christ. Christ came in the flesh. He
came in the flesh and is the very light of men, revealing
to us who the Father is. Christ was crucified. to make
an atonement for our sins, to give us life in Himself, by Him. And that third day, He arose
from the dead. He arose from the dead. And now
in Him we have life. And we'll see then on day four
that just as our Savior ascended up to the heavens and that light
was gone, yet he left us with a witness. And on day four, what
was created? The light bearers to give witness,
the sun and the moon and the stars. And we see in that sun
there the Holy Ghost, which bears witness to the light of the Lord
Jesus Christ. And those waters, which were
celestial waters, picture the word, a witness given to the
people of God. And that moon, the Jews who heard. And the stars, the Gentile nations,
all scattered out, the eyes of the nations bearing witness to
the light that Christ has left for us. That we might know that
He is the Savior who came. He's the light of God. He provided
the atonement. He rose again from the dead and
we bear witness to that. And then day five, what? The
seas, the people, right? The water, those are the waters
according to Revelation 17. Then they brought forth life
under the witness, the testimony which was given. Initially, when
Christ was here on that land, there was grass and herbs. There was a small witness testifying
to Christ, a very small remnant of believers. But after he rose
again and they bore witness, then many, many, many, many Believers
believe. Many came forth under that witness
and testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ. Isn't that beautiful?
What you see in creation, how that this whole creation account
testifies of Christ crucified and what he is doing this very
hour in the hearts of his people. Praise be to God. And so I'm
not going to go into it just to say that you see that seed,
that bearing seed, after his kind. We're not born of the flesh. The flesh begets flesh. The spirit
begets spirit. And we are born, we came forth
initially born of Adam's seed. And that's corrupt. It's defiled.
We're not saved in Adam's seed. We have no inheritance with God
in Adam. Our inheritance is in Christ. And we are born again
after his kind, after his seed and we live and and breathe in
him and like that land we have a land prepared of the holy spirit
not those we have a fertile ground made fertile to bear some fruit
some hundred fold some 60 fold some 30 fold all in the lord
jesus christ we're born of him so i praise god for this glory,
this mercy of our God revealing to us over and over, giving testimony
upon testimony that this is all, this whole creation is of Christ
and Him crucified and He's testifying to you in every word, Christ,
Christ. Look to Him, believe Him, rejoice
in the Lord Jesus Christ. He is our very salvation, the
hope of God's people. Amen. Let's go to the Lord in prayer
and we'll be dismissed with a song. Our gracious Lord, we thank you,
Father, for your grace, your wisdom, your power, your glory,
your majesty in showing us Christ from the very foundation of the
world that this is all to testify, all to glorify the Lord Jesus
Christ to your people, who has obtained eternal redemption for
his people. And that he didn't just die,
but he rose again. And that we see and hear the
good news of our God and the Savior. Lord, thank you for this
mercy. Lord, bless your people. You
know the difficulties that many are going through, their sicknesses
and their the operation for Brother Scott, the concern that Johnny
has, and just the healing of Ron and of Alyssa and all your
people. Lord, have mercy, comfort your
people, heal them in the Lord. Lord, you know the struggles
and the difficulties we have In our families, those that we
love and care for that aren't here with us, we pray for them,
Lord, that you would be merciful and compassionate to them, even
as you have been merciful and compassionate to us. Lord, reveal
your grace to their heart and reveal faith in your people.
Call them out of darkness. into the light of Christ. Lord,
we pray for reconciliation with our brethren. We pray, Lord,
that where offenses have been made, that there would be grace
and peace and forgiveness and joy everlasting in the Lord Jesus
Christ. We pray for our brother Joe,
who's preaching the gospel to the people next week. We pray
that you would be with him, bless him, give him your spirit, Comfort
his heart, and Lord, make your word a comfort to your people
here. And Lord, we pray for all the
traveling coming up, just that you would keep and establish
this work here. Bless your people here. It's
in Christ's name that we pray and give thanks. Amen. All right,
brother. Let's all stand and sing a closing
hymn, 460, leaning on the everlasting arms, 460. What a fellowship, what a joy
divine, leaning on the everlasting arms. What a blessedness, what
a peace is mine, leaning on the everlasting arms. Leaning, leaning, safe and secure
from all alarms. Leaning, leaning, leaning on
the everlasting arm How sweet to walk in this pilgrim
way, leaning on the everlasting arms. Oh, how bright the path
grows from day to day, leaning on the everlasting arms, leaning. Leaning, leaning, safe and secure
from all alarms. Leaning, leaning, leaning on
the everlasting arms. What have I to dread? What have I to fear? Leaning on the everlasting arms,
I have blessed peace with my Lord so near. Leaning on the
everlasting arms, leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms,
leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms. Thank you.
