The sermon preached by Gabe Stalnaker focuses on the essential doctrine of the nature and attributes of God as outlined in Hebrews 11:6, which states that without faith it is impossible to please God. Stalnaker emphasizes the necessity of acknowledging God's existence and attributes, asserting that belief in "He is" encompasses the understanding that God is sovereign, Christ is fully divine, and that salvation is entirely an act of God's grace. He supports his arguments with various Scripture references, such as Acts 9 and Ephesians 2, to demonstrate that belief in Christ's divinity and lordship is foundational to the Christian faith. The practical significance of this sermon lies in the assurance that true faith rests in God's sovereignty and grace, leading believers to a deeper understanding of their salvation and peace in Christ.

Key Quotes

“Either a man or a woman will believe that he is, or a man or a woman will believe that he is not. There’s not any gray area. There’s no middle ground.”

“He is the third part equal member of the Trinity, God Almighty come down, the one in whom all the fullness of God dwells.”

“False religion is built on and it believes that I am able. That’s what it tells people. You’re able.”

“Every soul that he has purposed to subdue unto himself, he will subdue them.”

What does the Bible say about faith in God?

The Bible teaches that without faith, it is impossible to please God, as stated in Hebrews 11:6.

Hebrews 11:6 emphasizes the necessity of faith for coming to God, declaring that one must believe that He exists and rewards those who earnestly seek Him. This underscores the Reformed understanding that true faith is a gift from God, leading individuals to recognize His sovereignty and the necessity of His grace for salvation. The foundation of our faith is not our abilities but who God is and what He has accomplished through Christ.

Hebrews 11:6, Romans 10:17

How do we know God is sovereign?

The Bible states that Jesus is Lord of all, confirming God's sovereignty over everything.

Scripture clearly identifies Jesus Christ as Lord of all, as seen in Acts 10:36, affirming His reign and authority over all creation. The belief that Christ is sovereign is fundamental to the Reformed faith, which acknowledges that nothing happens outside of God's divine will. This sovereignty is not contingent on human acknowledgment but is an inherent aspect of God’s character, reminding believers that He is in control and everything unfolds according to His plan.

Acts 10:36, Philippians 2:9-11

Why is understanding Jesus as our Savior essential?

Understanding Jesus as our Savior is crucial because He is the one who reconciles us to God through His sacrifice.

Ephesians 2:13 teaches that through the blood of Christ, those who were once far away have been brought near, establishing Jesus as the only mediator between God and man. This understanding is essential as it highlights the grace of God in salvation, showing that it is not through human works that we are saved, but through faith in Him who has accomplished our redemption. The sovereignty of Christ as our Savior provides the assurance of our salvation and emphasizes our dependence on His complete and sufficient work.

Ephesians 2:13, John 14:6

What does it mean that Christ is our peace?

Christ being our peace means He reconciles us with God, abolishing enmity and creating unity.

In Ephesians 2:14, Paul states that Christ Himself is our peace, having broken down the wall of separation caused by sin. This signifies that through Christ, we experience reconciliation with God and with one another. The concept of Christ as our peace is vital in the Reformed perspective, illustrating that our hope and comfort come not from our actions but from His perfect sacrifice and authority over our lives. He is the true source of peace for believers, ensuring that we are united with God and each other.

Ephesians 2:14, Colossians 1:20

Why is it important to acknowledge Jesus’ divinity?

Acknowledging Jesus' divinity is crucial as it affirms His authority as God and the basis for our salvation.

Recognizing Jesus as divine is foundational to Christian faith, as highlighted in John 1:1, where it is stated that 'the Word was God.' This truth affirms that our salvation rests not only on His teachings but on His very nature as God Himself. Denying His divinity undermines the gospel, as it diminishes the significance of His sacrifice and authority. The Reformed faith emphasizes that our assurance of salvation is based on who Christ is—fully God and fully man—and His ability to redeem us from sin through His death and resurrection.

Hebrews 11, I want to bring a very simple Bible study to us this morning. What we're about to declare is actually so deep, man cannot comprehend it unless God reveals it to him. The Lord God will have to open a man or a woman's eyes to this or a man or a woman will never see and understand this. But what we're about to see will be laid out in a very straightforward way. And this right here is absolute truth. What we're about to look at is absolute truth. And every person who has been given true faith to believe and to see the truth concerning God's Christ will say, yes, that's right. Every bit of that is so. Every bit of that is critically so. Every single component of that must be or else we will not be seeing Christ and believing on Christ as he is for who he is. If any of this is denied, God will not be pleased. That's what we will say.

So let me set forth some scriptures to you and let's see if God will give us faith to say, yep, that's right. That's the whole end goal of this, that our hearts might say, yep, yeah, that's right. Concerning each one of these, I'm gonna read a scripture, and then we're gonna say, yep, that's right. And then we're gonna go to the next one. And I'm gonna read it, and we're gonna say, yep, that's right. And then we're gonna move on to the next one. All right, so here's our text. Our text is Hebrews 11, verse six. It says, but without faith, it is impossible to please God. The last word of verse five is God. Without faith, it is impossible to believe him. For he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. He or she that comes to God must believe that he is. I'm telling you, this is so, this right here is so If a man or a woman does not believe that he is, that man or woman cannot come to God. Cannot. Either a man or a woman will believe that he is, and I know where I'm going with this. You don't yet know where I'm going with this, but I'm telling you this is so. Either a man or a woman will believe that he is or a man or a woman will believe that he is not. There's not any gray area. There's no middle ground. It's one or the other. Either he is or he is not. And the difference in that belief will determine whether a person has been saved or lost. This is so. This is so. A person who does not believe that he is, is lost and damned.

All right, so here's what we're gonna find out for the entire Bible study. He is what? He is what? How can we know whether or not we believe that he is if we don't know what he is. So we're gonna take the rest of this Bible study and we're gonna answer that question. We're gonna go scripture to scripture. We're not gonna have a lot of time to expound on them, but we're gonna declare it and go to the next one. We're gonna declare it and go to the next one. I pray God will give us faith to believe what we're about to read.

He that cometh to God must believe that he is white. Turn with me to Acts chapter 9. Acts chapter 9, this is Saul of Tarsus headed to Damascus. You know this account, verse 1, Saul was breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord. He went unto the high priest, desired of him letters to Damascus, to the synagogue, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. As he journeyed, he came near Damascus, and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven, and he fell to the earth. And he heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

Look at verse eight. And Saul arose from the earth, and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man, but they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. He was three days without sight. It blinded him seeing God. And I want to expound on it. I don't have time, but I want to. That's what will happen to a man. He will become blind to everything he thought he saw and everything that he thought he saw in himself.

All right, we got it. I can't do that.

Verse nine, he was three days without sight and neither did eat nor drink. Verse 17, And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house, and putting his hands on him, said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way, as thou camest, has sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales, and he received sight, forthwith, and arose, and was baptized. And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples, which were in Damascus. And after that time was over, verse 20 says, straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues that He is the son of God. He is the son of God.

Now let me tell you what that does not mean. That does not mean he is God's son. That means he is the third part equal member of the Trinity God. equal to the Father, equal to the Spirit, God Almighty come down, the one in whom all the fullness of God dwells, the highest God of heaven, manifest in the flesh, God of very God. And I'm just going to interject, a lot of people don't believe that. A lot of people believe he's God's Son. He's the Son of God. Any soul that does not believe that Jesus Christ is the high God of heaven, God will not be pleased with that soul. God will not be pleased with that soul. He is the Son of God. And all of God's people will say, yep, that's right.

All right, next, look at Acts 10, Acts chapter 10, right here, verse 34. Then Peter opened his mouth and said, of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons, but in every nation he that feareth him and worketh righteousness is accepted with him. The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ. He is Lord of all. He is Lord of all. The name Lord means sovereign, ruler, controller. Either he is or he is not. Either He is or He is not. He is not trying to be Lord. He's not waiting on anybody to make Him Lord. He is Lord. He is Lord. Acts 17 says, He is Lord of heaven and earth. One God, one ruler, one reigner over me, over you, over everything. Everything. Jesus Christ, crown him Lord of all because he is. Yep, that's right. Yeah, that's right.

All right, next. Go with me to Ephesians 2. Verse 11, wherefore remember that you being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called uncircumcision by that which is called the circumcision in the flesh made by hands, that at that time you are without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus, ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ, for he is our peace, who hath made both one and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us, having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances, for to make in himself of twain One new man, so making peace. He is our peace. I am not my peace. People say, have you made your peace with God? No. No, I haven't. I'm not my maker of my peace. He is. He is. My Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ is. Look right here at Ephesians 5, the end of verse 23. It says, He is the Savior of the body. Salvation is of the Lord. We are His workmanship. I'm not my own redeemer. I'm not my own peacemaker. He is. Yep. That's right. All right. Next. Look with me at Philippians three. Philippians 3 verse 20. For our conversation is in heaven from whence also we look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself. There is nothing that he cannot and will not conquer to himself and subdue to himself either in salvation or damnation. That gives me so much comfort. That gives me so much comfort. Every single soul that he has purposed to subdue unto himself, he will subdue them. Look at Colossians 1 verse 16. It's right across my page here. It says, for by him were all things created that are in heaven and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones or dominions or principalities or powers, all things were created by Him and for Him. And He is before all things and by Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church. who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he might have the preeminence. He is before all things. He is the head of the body. That's why he's able to subdue all things to himself. God's people hear that and say, yep, that's right. Man, man wants to put himself on top by nature. But God's called, delivered, saved, quickened people want Christ to be on top. He's the head. Everybody wants to wear a crown. Give me my crown. Let me go walk around heaven with my crown on. All of God's people are saying, put it on my head. He has the preeminence. He takes number ones. Look at 2 Timothy 1. 2nd Timothy 1 verse 8, Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God, who hath saved us and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, but is now made manifest by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles, for the which cause I also suffer these things, nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed. and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I've committed unto him against that day." Paul said, in all of this, I am persuaded that it's not me, it's him. This is the heart and the foundation of the gospel. This is. He is. He is. False religion is built on and it believes that I am able. That's what it tells people. You're able. Come on now. You're able. Do it. You're able. We are able to keep that which must be committed to God. That's what false religion says. And that's not the gospel. And that's not the truth. And therefore, that's not the belief that pleases God. Anything other than He is steals the glory from the all-accomplishing, all-sufficient Christ of God. The truth that honors and pleases God is Christ is. He is. And all of God's people say, that's right. Yep, that's right. All right, now, I won't be much longer. Let's just really enter into the sweetness of these next few, okay? Turn with me to Hebrews 2. All right, Hebrews 2, verse 11. For both he that sanctifyeth and they who are sanctified are all of one, for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren. And that's because while we were yet sinners, he loved us. Look at verse 16, it says, for verily he took not on him the nature of angels, but he took on him the seed of Abraham. Wherefore in all things it behooved him to be made like unto his brethren that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succor, to comfort them that are tempted. And that's because in all points he was tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Look at Hebrews 7, verse 25. Hebrews 7, 25, it says, wherefore, he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth. to make intercession for them. And that's because he was touched with the feeling of our infirmities. Hebrews 8 verse 6 says, but now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant. which was established upon better promises. He's the comforter. He's the uttermost redeemer because he's the only mediator between God and men that there is. He's the only one. I'm not my comforter. I'm not my redeemer. I'm not my mediator. He is. If a man or a woman ever gets a hold of that, God will be pleased. God did it. but God will be pleased and that man or woman will be happy. I've told you before about this brother who, this was years ago, but we were talking, he had come out of bondage religion, works-based, man-centered, you know, really had you looking at you, trying to keep yourself in line, works-based religion, bondage. And we were, the Lord started revealing Christ to him, started revealing what the gospel really is, that it's not that I'm gonna do it, it's that he's already done it, and I'm just now being notified. And talking about he is our righteousness, he is our sanctification, because he was told all his life he had to progress in sanctification. No, he is our sanctification. He is our goodness. He is our accomplisher. He is our doer. Everything that needs to be done, He has done it. He will do it. Just look at Him. And this brother said, Isn't that so relaxing? That's just so relaxing. All of God's people will say, Yep, that's right. That's what it is. It's relaxing. Listen to these. I'm closing. Hebrews 10 says he is faithful. That's Hebrews 10, 23. First Peter 2, 7 says he is precious. First Peter 4, 14 says he is glorified. First John 2 says he is the propitiation because he is righteous. I'm not, but he is. First John 3 says he is pure. Forget about me, I'm irrelevant. All that matters is what he is. That's right, that's right. And you turn, I'm gonna be done. You go to First John 3. Let me read Revelation 17, 14 while you're going there. Revelation 17 verse 14 says, These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings. And they that are with Him are called and chosen and faithful. Why can those things be said about us? How can those things be said about us? Only because we're with Him. As He is. so are we we've been joined into union with the lord of lords and the king of kings our standing totally hinges on him completely on him this is the faith that god puts in all of his people this is the faith of god in god that pleases god and i'm going to leave us now with this promise okay first john 3 verse 1 it says Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us that we should be called the sons of God. Therefore the world knoweth us not because it knew him not.

Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when he shall appear, we shall be like him. For we shall see him as he is, as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifies himself, even as he is pure. When he comes back, we're gonna be like him. because we're gonna get to see him as he is. That is the pleasing faith that our God has given to us, and every soul that he's given it to will say, yep, that's right. That's right, I pray that's all of us, amen.
