The Name Of God & His Doctrine

1 Timothy 6:1
Gabe Stalnaker September, 10 2023 Video & Audio
0 Comments

The sermon delivered by Gabe Stalnaker focuses on the significance of the name of God and His doctrine, anchored in 1 Timothy 6:1. Stalnaker emphasizes the need to understand God's true identity and teachings, which are foundational to Reformed theology. By examining various names of God throughout Scripture—such as Elohim (Creator), Jehovah (the self-existing One), and Jesus Christ—the preacher illustrates how each name reveals aspects of God’s character and His redemptive plan. For instance, the name “Jehovah-Jireh” signifies God as the provider, culminating in the provision of Christ as the ultimate lamb for sacrifice. The doctrinal importance lies in recognizing that God’s name and doctrine converge in Jesus Christ, essentially positing that knowledge and worship of God must be centered on Him as the sole mediator and savior.

Turn with me to 1 Timothy chapter
6. 1 Timothy chapter 6. Last week
I mentioned something to you that stood out to me in verse
1. but I didn't have time for us
to look at it. So we are going to look at it this morning and
it's this right here. If you look at first Timothy
six verse one, it says, let as many servants as are under the
yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor. that the
name of God and His doctrine be not blasphemed. The name of
God and His doctrine. The name of God and His doctrine. What is God's name? What is God's doctrine? That's what I want to know. I
want to know who God is. I want to know what God's name
is. And I want to know what God's
doctrine is. I'm sincere in saying that. I
truly do. Every man and woman on this earth
has his or her own doctrine. And for many people, that's the
only doctrine they want to know. That's the only doctrine they're
going to hold to. That was their daddy's doctrine
and their granddaddy's doctrine. And that's it. Every man and woman on this earth
has his or her own doctrine. That's what creates and separates
different denominations of people. The reason there are different
denominations, different denomination churches, is because they have
a different doctrine. One will have a different doctrine
from another one. The only way that a person will
be satisfied to sit and listen to any preacher Is if they agree
on doctrine, that's the only way. Well, God's Holy spirit will
cause all of God's people to say, I only want to know one
doctrine. I only want to believe and agree
with and hold to one doctrine, God's doctrine. Not my doctrine,
not any other man's doctrine, God's doctrine alone. God's people
want to know what is God's name and what is God's doctrine. Let's start with his name, God's
name. His name will tell us who he
is. The scripture says his name is
of critical importance. Because Nehemiah 9 verse 5 says,
his name is exalted above all blessing and praise. I love that. All blessing and praise that
this pitiful world can try to give to him and all blessing
and praise that heaven can try to give to him. He's above it. His name is far above it. Philippians
2 says, he has been given a name which is far above every name. Acts chapter 4, Acts 4 verse
12 says, neither is there salvation in any other name for there is
no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be
saved. That's a critical name. That's a name of critical importance. So what is it? What is God's
name? I have an educational study for
us this morning. I want to go ahead and tell you
that. I want you to be prepared. I have a true Sunday school,
okay? This is going to be an educational
Sunday school. Turn with me to Genesis chapter
one. Genesis chapter 1, in our English
Bible, all of these words right here
that we're all holding in our lap in this English Bible, these
words were translated from Hebrew or Greek. Hebrew in the Old Testament,
Greek in the New Testament, translated into this language that we know
and speak. Often we will find the same word over and over again
in English, but it was a different word each time in Hebrew or Greek. And I thought about, I was, Hannah
and I had the privilege of going to Mexico together, married one
time. I was not preaching back then.
I did not preach down there, but brother Paul, her dad did. And he was preaching to one of
the Pueblos He was preaching in English, Brother Cody Groover
was translating into Spanish, and Brother Paul was describing
God, and he used an adjective. And Cody said a word that we
didn't know. And then Brother Paul used another
adjective and Cody said the same word. I didn't know it, but he
said the same thing. And then Brother Paul used another
adjective and Cody said, Paul, there are no more adjectives
in Spanish. I only have one. I'm repeating
the same one. He said, okay, I'll move on. Well, that's how
it is for us in English. All right. Oftentimes the same
word is repeated But in Hebrew, they were different words. All
right, different words. The word repent in our Bible,
and this is why it's so important to look up what these words originally
meant when they were used. The word repent, the word repented,
it's repeated over and over again in English, but there are six
or eight different original words with original meanings that were
used. And so it's important if we want
to know what was God really saying? It repented the Lord that he
made man. That mean God changed his mind?
No, not in that case it doesn't. But if we want to know what was
God really saying, it's important that we understand the word that
was used. Does that make sense? Well, we find that to be the
case with the name God and the name Lord. Throughout the scripture, there
are many different words used in connection with His name that
tell us who He really is. We want to know who He really
is. The first one is in the first
verse of the Bible, okay? Genesis 1, verse 1, it says,
in the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. That
word God, in English, we say God. In Hebrew, the word is Elohim. And it means our creator. In the beginning, our Creator
created. Now as we do this, you're gonna
see that the theme of the verse matches the original word that
was used. You're gonna see that to be so.
The definition was put in the verse. Our Creator created. What's His name? Elohim, Creator. That's His name. Look at Genesis
2, verse 4. These are the generations of
the heavens and of the earth when they were created in the
day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens. Genesis
1 said, in the beginning God created. Genesis 2 says, the
Lord God made. The Hebrew name for Lord is Jehovah. That means the self-existing,
eternal One. What's His name? What is His
name? His name is Jehovah. Elohim,
Jehovah. This is who he is. He is the
self-existing eternal creator. This is who he is. Look at Genesis
14. Verse 18 says, And Melchizedek,
king of Salem, brought forth bread and wine, and he was the
priest of the Most High God. That Hebrew word for God right
there is El Elyon, and it means the Most High. That's what the
word means. Jehovah, Elohim, El Elyon, the
self-existing, eternal Creator Most High. That's His name. Look at Genesis 15 verse 2. It says, And Abram said, Lord
God, What wilt thou give me, seeing
I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eleazar of
Damascus? You see that Lord God. Hold your place right here and
go back to Genesis 2 where we just were. Genesis 2. Verse 4, this is what we just
read. These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth
when they were created in the day that the Lord God made the
earth and the heavens. You see how that says Lord God? And Genesis 15 said Lord God. They both say Lord God. They're
different. They're different. If you look
right here at Genesis 2 verse 4, that Lord God is capital L,
capital O, capital R, capital D. All right? Now go back to
Genesis 15. Verse 2 says, And Abram said,
Lord God. Do you see how that's capital
L, lowercase o, lowercase r, lowercase d? The original Hebrew
word that was used right there is Adonai, and it means master. That's what it means. What is God's name? God's name
is master. We call him Lord and master,
and we say, well, for so he is. That's his name. That's his name. Look at Genesis 17 verse one. And when Abram was 90 years old
and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram and said unto him, I am
the almighty God. Walk before me and be thou perfect. That Hebrew word is El Shaddai,
and it means the Almighty. What is his name? What is God's
name? El Shaddai, the Almighty. The Almighty. All power has been
given into his hands. All power, all might. Look at
Genesis 21. Genesis 21 verse 33, it says,
and Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba and called there on
the name of the Lord. Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba
and called on the name El Olam. And it means, The Everlasting
God. That's what it means. The Everlasting
God. That's His name. Alpha to Omega. Eternity to Eternity. That's
His name. That is His name. We know Him. We call on Him. We worship Him
as He has revealed Himself to us in His Word. What He has written
to us. What He has revealed of Himself. This is how we know who our God
is. This is how we know the name
of our God, who it is in our heart we're bowing to, who it
is we're worshiping. Now look at Genesis 22. We know
this one well. This is where Abraham took Isaac
to the top of Mount Moriah to offer him as a sacrifice. But
God provided a ram in Isaac's place. Verse 14 says, and Abraham called the name of
that place Jehovah-Jireh. As it is said to this day, in
the mount of the Lord it shall be seen. Jehovah-Jireh means
the Lord will provide. The self-existing Eternal One,
the Creator, the Most High, the Master, the Almighty, the Everlasting
God will provide. Will provide what? What will He provide? Himself. He will provide himself. Look
right here at verse eight, Genesis 22, eight. Abraham said, my son,
God will provide himself a lamb. He will provide a lamb for himself. We don't have a lamb, dad. God
will provide a lamb for himself. And God will provide himself
as the lamb. God will provide himself to be
that lamb. God will provide himself a lamb
for a burnt offering. That's his name. That's who he
is, the provider. He is the provider. Now, let
me just read a bunch of these to you, okay? Exodus 15 verse
26 says, his name is Jehovah Rapha, the Lord our healer. The one who healed us. Who is
God? What is God's name? God's name
is the one who healed us. Exodus 17 verse 15 says his name
is Jehovah Nisi, the Lord, our banner, the one we look to. What is God's name? God's name
is the one we look to. Exodus 31, 13 says, His name
is Jehovah Mechadishkan, the Lord, our sanctifier, the one
who is made unto us. Sanctification. Sanctification
is holiness. It's what it is, purity. Judges 6.24 says His name is
Jehovah Shalom, the Lord our peace, the one who made peace
for us. What is God's name? God's name
is the one who made peace for His people. First Samuel 1.3 says His name
is Jehovah Sabaoth, the Lord of hosts. Lord Sabaoth his name. I thought they were just adding
an extra syllable in there so it would sing properly. I've
thought that my whole life. That's his name. That's his name,
the Lord of hosts. Psalm 23 verse one says his name
is Jehovah-Rehah, the Lord our shepherd. What is his name? His
name is the Lord our shepherd, the shepherd of the sheep. Jeremiah
23 verse 6 says, His name is Jehovah Tzedkenu, the Lord, our
righteousness, the one who is made unto us righteousness, good
deeds, goodness, the one who is the end of the law for righteousness.
Ezekiel 48 35 says his name is Jehovah Shama. That means the
Lord is here. The Lord is near. The Lord is
with us. The one who said, I'll never
leave you. I'll never forsake you. That's
his name. You know, the scripture always
says, for your namesake, do this for your namesake, because your
name is, I will not leave you. Hosea 2 16 says his name is Jehovah
ish the Lord our husband the Lord our husband now here's the
question who is this who are we talking about who are we describing
who is the word describing who is God what is God's name Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ, the
Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal, existing master, savior, almighty. When we think of Jesus Christ,
we know him by his name. We worship him for his namesake,
while men and women in this world do not know his name. They do
not know He is Jesus Christ, the Eternal, Almighty, All-Powerful,
Only Mediator, Most High, Master. Jesus Christ the Lord. This is how God's people worship
Him. Call His name Jesus because He is the Lord, our Savior. Call
his name Emmanuel because he is the Lord our God. Jesus Christ
is God's name. Jesus Christ is God's name. All
right, now, I'll be very quick. What is God's doctrine? What
is God's doctrine? In Deuteronomy 32, God said it
would drop as the rain. He said, my doctrine will come
down. My doctrine will come down. Proverbs
four verse two says it's good doctrine. You know, there's none
good, but one. First Timothy one says it's sound
doctrine. True. And it says it's the only doctrine,
no other, no other doctrine, only one, only one. And that's important to know
in the scripture, God's doctrine is never plural. There's only
one. Acts 13 says it is the doctrine
of the Lord. First Timothy six calls it the
doctrine according to godliness. Titus 2 calls it the doctrine
of God our Savior. Who is it? Who is that? Turn
with me to 2 John. Just before Revelation, go to
2 John. 2 John verse 9 says, Whosoever
transgresseth and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ hath
not God. He that abideth in the doctrine
of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. If there come any
unto you and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house,
neither bid him Godspeed. What is God's doctrine? Here's
the answer. Jesus Christ. The doctrine of
God is the teaching of Jesus Christ. The words of Jesus Christ
The subject of Jesus Christ, the doctrine of God is a person.
The doctrine of God is a person. Years ago, someone asked a woman
who attended here, what's it like down there? What's it all
about? Do they just talk about election
all the time? The woman said, no. It's really
just all about Christ. We just talk about Christ. She told me about it and I said,
good answer. Good answer. That's exactly right. It's really
just all about Christ. We just talk about Christ. That
is our doctrine because that's God's doctrine. Christ is our
doctrine because Christ is God's doctrine. The name of God and
the doctrine of God are the same. What is God's name? Christ. What
is God's doctrine? Christ. It's all Christ. It's all Christ. In Matthew 3,
the father said, this is my beloved son. Hear him. He's my doctrine. Turn back a page to 1 John 5,
verse 9. 1 John 5, verse 9, we'll close
with this. It says, if we receive the witness
of men, the witness of God is greater. For this is the witness
of God, which he hath testified of his son. He that believeth
on the Son of God hath the witness in himself. He that believeth
not God hath made him a liar, because he believeth not the
record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record that God
hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life,
and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. Down in
verse 20, it says, we know that the Son of God is come, and hath
given us an understanding that we may know him that is true,
and we are in him that is true, even in his Son, Jesus Christ. This is the true God in eternal
life. Little children, keep yourselves
from idols. Amen. May God keep us in the
name of God, in the doctrine of God. Christ Jesus, our Lord. Amen.
