Kingsport Sovereign Grace Church,
located at 905 Yadkin Street in Kingsport, Tennessee, would
like to invite you to listen to a message of sovereign grace
by their pastor, Gabe Stoniker. And now, Pastor Gabe Stoniker. The message today is going to
come from Matthew chapter 1, Verse one, the first book, first
chapter, first verse in the New Testament. I love Matthew chapter
one. I'm very thankful for this chapter. The fact that our Lord would
come into the world. That fact is our hope. The fact
that he came into this world. is a sinner's rest. It's our
comfort that Christ would come into this world just hearing
how he came and hearing why he came. Understanding why he truly
came and what he did while he was here. That is music to a believer's
ears. Those things are all that a believer
wants to hear about. That he came, why he came, what
he accomplished while he was here, and that's what I would
like for us to see this morning. I want us to see that in Matthew
1 verse 1. Matthew 1 verse 1. Now it says,
the book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David,
the son of Abraham. The book. The book. This Bible is the book. The book. God has given us one
book. The book. He's given us one book. To hold and trust. And read and believe one book. That we can cast our all on. One book. To be the word of God
himself. This is the Word of God Himself. These are not the words of men. Not one word in this book was
given by private interpretation. God laid hold of men and He used
their hand and their pen to pen these things. But every word
was under the inspiration of God's Holy Ghost. This is God's
Word. Every word of it. The book sent
from heaven to earth. This is the book that connects
the mind and the thoughts and the purpose and the work of God
with men. What a book. What a book. This is the book that designates
the difference between the truth and a lie, this book. This determines
the difference. This is the one and only book
that confirms who the Christ is. This is the only book that
confirms who he is and who he came to save. and how he saved
him. This is the book. Now, aren't
we so thankful for this one book? I'm so thankful for this book.
Aren't you so thankful for the book? The book. So thankful for the fact that
there are no other books. I'm very grateful for this. There
are no other books that are to be consulted or believed When
it comes to the things of God, if they differ from this book,
don't believe them. This is the standard. This is
the foundation. God's truth is without controversy. Scripture says. It's without
controversy, God has given one book. One book. And this is it. God's word, so
comforting. And it's safe. Paul said, it's
not grievous for me to continually declare the things in this word.
It's safe. So safe. Now in this book, this
is the book. And in this book, God has given
one subject matter. There's only one subject matter
in the entire book. There is one theme. One interpretation. The summary comes to one conclusion. In the whole book. Verse one
says the book. Of the generation of Jesus Christ. That's what it is. It's the book
of the generation of Jesus Christ. Genesis one one. Says in the
beginning God. That's where it starts. In the
beginning God. That's what the whole book is
about. God, who God is and what he has done. That is a revelation
in and of itself. What is this Bible all about?
This book is so close to people. It's so hard to understand to
people. Here's the conclusion of the whole book. This book
tells us who God is and what He has done. That's what the
whole book is about. Who God is and what He has done. That's what God has revealed
to us through this book. Genesis 1, 1 says, In the beginning,
God. Revelation 1, 1, the last book
in the Bible. Revelation 1, 1 says, the revelation
of Jesus Christ. That's what sinners are enlightened
to who have been given eyes to see what is revealed in the pages
of this book. They see Christ. They see Christ. God is revealed
in the book. And when God is revealed, sinners
see Christ. Christ our God. This book starts
with Christ. This book ends with Christ right
here in the middle of the book. It says this is the generation
of Jesus Christ. Now there is so much good news
in what has just been stated in half of verse one, just in
what we've read so far. There's so much good news in
that. If those were the only words God gave us, God sent us
all of these words. If those were the only words
he gave to us, there's so much gospel in that we could hold
to those words all the way to eternity. be enough to save our
souls all the way to eternity. We could rejoice in Jesus Christ,
our generation, all the way to glory. He said, this is the book
of the generation. If you want to look at verse
17, it says, so all the generations, plural, all the generations from
Abraham to David are 14 generations And from David until the carrying
away into Babylon are 14 generations. And from the carrying away into
Babylon unto Christ are 14 generations. Generations. But this is the
book of the generation. It gives us, beginning in verse
2, the generations of Abraham. but this is the entire book is
the generation singular the generation of Jesus Christ that's what it's
all about the one generation of Jesus Christ now what that
means is he ever liveth that's what it means he ever liveth
it means he has no beginning and no end, Jesus Christ. In the beginning was the Word,
the Word was with God, the Word was God, and the Word was manifest
in the flesh. In time he came, but he didn't
begin 2,000 years ago in Bethlehem. He said, a body hast thou prepared
me, and he came to accomplish a work. He has no beginning. ALL THINGS WERE MADE BY HIM,
AND WITHOUT HIM WAS NOT ANYTHING MADE THAT WAS MADE. IN GENESIS,
ALL THOSE THINGS THAT WERE CREATED, JESUS CHRIST CREATED ALL OF THAT.
HE HAS NO BEGINNING. HE HAS NO END. HE IS THE SAME
YESTERDAY, TODAY, AND FOREVER. THAT'S GREAT NEWS. THAT IS GREAT
NEWS. THAT IS ALL THE GOSPEL A SINNER
NEEDS TO HEAR. JESUS CHRIST The Lord Jesus Christ,
the one who embodies the fullness of humanity, man, and the fullness
of deity, the fullness of God at the same moment in time. The
God-man, the Lord Jesus Christ, the only one who is able to be
the mediator between God and man the only one who's able to
do that ever liveth he ever liveth hebrews 7 says to make intercession
for us good news well verse 1 here in matthew 1 it says the book
of the generation of jesus christ now who is jesus christ Who is
Jesus Christ? It says, He is the Son of David,
and He is the Son of Abraham. That's what it says, the Son
of David, the Son of Abraham. Now, who is Jesus Christ? To say He is the Son of David
and the Son of Abraham, Earthly speaking genealogy, the son of
David, the son of Abraham, that proves that he is indeed the
Christ. That proves that Jesus is indeed
the Christ. The Apostle Paul said in first
Corinthians 15, everything about him was and had to be according
to the scriptures. It was about, it was according
to the scriptures and it had to be. according to the scriptures. Well, what did the scripture
say about him? If you want to look with me at Psalm 132, it
says in Psalm 132 verse 11, the Lord hath sworn in truth unto
David. He will not turn from it. Of
the fruit of thy body will I sit upon thy throne. Of the fruit
of thy body will I sit upon thy throne. Now that's what God said.
Who is Jesus Christ? Jesus Christ is God. He said, I will sit on the throne. Of the fruit of your body, I'll
sit on the throne. Christ is seated on the throne.
So he's God. And we could look at many, many
verses that say the same thing, but for the sake of time, let's
see what he said to Abraham. That's what he said to David,
of the fruit of your body, I'm going to sit on the throne. All
right, now let me show you what he said to Abraham. If you want
to look with me at Genesis chapter 26, over in Genesis 26, this
is the Lord reiterating to Isaac what he said to his father Abraham.
Verse 4, he said, I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars
of heaven, and I will give unto thy seed all these countries,
and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed. Now who is he talking about?
Thy seed. He said it's all going to thy seed. Everything is going
to thy seed. All nations are going to be blessed
through thy seed. Who is he talking about? In Galatians
3 verse 16 says, Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises
made. He saith not unto seeds as of
many, but as of one, and to thy seed, which is Christ." It's
all going to Christ. All the blessing is going to
be found in Christ. Every soul that's going to be
blessed by God is going to be blessed through Christ. It's
all about Christ. It's all for Christ. That's the
promise that God made. Christ is the seed that all the
promises of God are found in. Now, back in the text, back in
Matthew 1, verse 1, it says, the book of the generation of
Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. And now beginning
in verse 2, he gives that genealogy. that says this is the promised
one. He came through the line of Abraham and David. Abraham and David. Why those
two men? Why did God say he would come
through those two men? Why of all the men in the genealogy,
if you have your Bible open, you can read it. There's a lot
of names right here. This genealogy that says he is
indeed the Christ. He's the one, all of these names,
why would God single out David and Abraham? He did it to reveal
to his people the generation of Jesus Christ. It's because
the son of David reveals who he is. The son of David tells
us who Christ really is. So many people believe they know
who Christ is. They believe they know who Jesus
is. He's God's Son. He's the first begotten of the
Father, only begotten of the Father. And He came, and we're just so
thankful He came to be an ambassador for His Father. That's what many
people believe. But through the Son of David,
God reveals to us who Christ really is, who he really is. And through the son of Abraham,
God reveals to us what he did, who he is, and what he did. Most people believe they know
what he did. Well, he did all of these good things, all of
these kind acts. He helped people. He healed people. He taught things. He was true to his faith, martyred
for his cause. God reveals to us through the
son of David and the son of Abraham who he is and what he did. Now, who was David's son? Who was David's son? He had many
sons. But the one that was included
in this genealogy line, in verse 6, it says, Jesse begat David
the king, and David the king begat Solomon. Solomon of her
that had been the wife of Uriah. Solomon was the son of David. Now, who was Solomon? Solomon
was the rightful heir to the throne. Solomon is the one who
sat on his father's throne. Solomon was the son of the highest. Solomon was the king himself. He was crowned king himself,
highest king, highest ruler. King of kings. Solomon was the
one who every knee bowed to. That's who Jesus Christ is. That's who the Lord Jesus Christ
is. What Solomon pictured on earth,
Jesus Christ is over all heaven and earth. Solomon reigned, Christ reigns. Solomon ruled, Christ rules. Solomon pictured Christ. He points us to Christ. All of
his kingdom, the kingdom of Christ, the scripture says there'll be
no end. Solomon's kingdom had an end, but a greater than Solomon
is here. Of his kingdom, there'll be no
end. Solomon was given more wisdom. than any man on this earth. That
picture is Christ who is wisdom. He was not just given wisdom,
he is wisdom. He's the source of wisdom. He
is where Solomon got his. All wisdom. Solomon had more
riches than any man. That points to Christ. All riches. All the gold and the silver in
the hills, that belongs to him. All things belong to him. All
of the honor, all of the glory, all the majesty. That's Christ. Christ is our wisdom. Christ
is our riches. Christ is our honor. Solomon
was the king of peace. He had peace on all sides of
him. While Solomon reigned, there was peace all around it. That's
Christ. That's Christ. He is peace. He does not just have peace. He made peace because he is peace. And that's what Matthew 1 verse
1 is telling us. A greater than Solomon is here.
A greater than Solomon, the king himself, the ruler, the master,
the controller. He's here. Look with me at Luke
chapter 1 if you're turning. Luke 1 verse 26. It says, And
in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto
a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man
whose name was Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin's
name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her
and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored. The Lord is with
thee. Blessed art thou among women.
And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast
in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel
said unto her, Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favor with
God. And behold, thou shalt conceive
in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name
Jesus. He shall be great. and shall
be called the Son of the Highest. And the Lord God shall give unto
him the throne of his father David. And he shall reign over
the house of Jacob, the sinner, the trickster, the supplanter."
That's me and you. He'll reign over the house of
Jacob forever and of his kingdom. There shall be no end. No end. Who is Jesus Christ? He's the
Son of David. He is the king on his throne. He is the owner, the ruler, the
sovereign, the son of David. Oh, but who is Jesus Christ?
Thank God. He's the son of Abraham. He is
the son of Abraham. The son of David tells us who
he is. The son of Abraham tells us what
he did. Abraham begat Isaac. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob. Abraham
begat Isaac. What did Isaac do? Well, look
with me at Genesis chapter 22. It says in Genesis 22, verse
one, it came to pass after these things that God did tempt Abraham
and said unto him, Abraham, and he said, behold, here I am. And he said, take now thy son,
thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the
land of Moriah, and offer him there for a burnt offering upon
one of the mountains, which I will tell thee of. Offer him a sacrifice
for sin. And it says, Abraham went, and
he gathered the wood, and he gathered the fire, and Isaac
asked him, Abraham, where's the lamb? Father, where's the lamb? And Abraham said, My son, God
will provide himself a lamb. And verse 9 says, They came to
the place which God had told him of, and Abraham built an
altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his
son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. Isaac was made
by his father. to be the sacrifice for sin. The sacrifice for sin. He carried
the wood. He made the altar. He willingly
crawled up on top of it. That's exactly what Jesus Christ
did. Who is he? He's the king. What
did he do? He willingly gave his life a
sacrifice for sin. He gave himself for the iniquity
of his people. He carried the sorrow of that
sin to the top of Mount Calvary. And like a lamb done before his
shearer, he opened not his mouth. He willingly laid down his life. And now in Isaac, not only do
we see our sacrifice, we see our deliverance. Abraham was
about to stab a knife in his son, and God said, Abraham, there's
a ram behind you. And Abraham laid hold of that
ram, and it was a substitute for his son, and Christ was the
substitute for us. And Abraham killed that ram and
called the name of that place Jehovah-Jireh, the Lord will
provide. And that's what Matthew 1.1 is
telling us. the King of Kings has provided. Christ the King is Christ the
Lamb. And do you know the end of the
book says we're going to be worshiping God and praising Him for that
for all eternity. In Revelation 5 it says, There
was a book, no man was able to open it, but the Lamb on the
throne, He took the book. He loosed the seals thereof.
And all of His people were so grateful, so grateful, they cried,
Thou art worthy, for Thou was slain and has redeemed us to
God by Thy blood. And You've made us kings and
priests unto our God through who You are, and what you did. That's what this book is all
about. That's what this book is all
about. Thank God for the book. Thank God for writing the book.
Thank God for sending the book. Thank God for opening our eyes
to the book. Thank God. I thank God for sending
a man to me to preach the book to me, preach the gospel to me,
preach Christ to me, who he is, and what he accomplished. He
is the son of David. He is the son of Abraham. Thank
God. Till next week, may the Lord
