Turn with me back to Psalm 45. Psalm 45. The Apostle Paul said, I know whom I have believed. Isn't that what he said? I know
whom, not what, I know whom I have believed." And he said, I am
persuaded that He is able to keep that which I've committed
unto Him against that day. I know whom, I know. Our Lord
said, this is life eternal that they might know Thee, the only
true God. in Jesus Christ whom thou hast
sent. We know who our salvation is. We know who we're trusting. We know. But I can't wait to
meet him. I can't wait to meet him. I know
whom I have believed. I do know. I do know. But I can't wait to meet him. I want to meet Him. I can't wait
for the first time to meet Him. These scriptures, do you know
why we love these scriptures and we open these scriptures
and we cling to these and we keep these right here? Do you
know why? Do you know what makes these
so wonderful to us? In these scriptures, we not only
see who our Savior is, we see who He
is. We not only know who He is, we
come to know what His character is. We come to know what's in
His heart, what His mind wants to do. That's what you love about
somebody, isn't it? This Word tells us about His
actions. This Word tells us about His
countenance. In our text tonight, we're going
to hear what He smells like. In verse 1, David said, My heart
is inditing. That means boiling, bubbling
up, about to explode. My heart is exploding over a
good matter. My heart is exploding with good
news. I'm about to talk about the King.
That's what he's saying right here. Verse 1, he said, My heart
is indicting a good matter. I speak of the things which I
have made touching the King. We're about to talk about the
King. I say the exact same thing. The exact same thing. Anytime
I believe the Lord has opened my eyes through His Word to see
our King, to enter into a realization of our King, I'm excited to tell
you. I get excited to tell you. David
went on to say in verse 1, my tongue is the pen of a ready
writer. It's a pen that's ready to be
put on paper. You know, back then, they used
to dip it in something. He said, it's dipped, it's ready. It's ready. My tongue is ready
to tell it. I can't wait. I'm excited. Verse
2 says, and he's talking about the king. He said, I'm speaking
of our king here. Verse 2, he said, thou art fairer
than the children of men. Looking at him, we have no idea
what he looks like. No idea. We wouldn't dare try
to draw a picture or paint a painting or depict what we think he looks
like. You talk about bring his glory
down. We wouldn't dare. I hath not
seen. And we don't know what he looks
like, but we stand here looking at him with the eyes of faith
that God has given us. We look at him through this word.
And seeing him in every way that he has revealed himself to us,
all we can say is, no man's like this man. Isn't that right? Everything we see of him. No
man is like this man. Those that were privileged to
stand there and listen to him preach, they said, no man spake
like this man. No man. No beauty is like this
beauty. We think we've seen beauty. Not like this. He is the fairest
of 10,000. Not only 10,000, he's the fairest
of them all. Verse 2 says, Thou art fairer
than the children of men. Grace is poured into thy lips. Grace is poured into his lips. Grace flowed from his lips. Look with me at Luke chapter
4. Luke chapter 4, verse 16, and
I can, before I read this, we've read this many times, but envision
this with these eyes of faith that God has given us. You envision
this scenario. Luke 4, 16 says, And he came
to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and as his custom
was, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day. and stood
up for to read. And there was delivered unto
him the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when he had opened the book,
he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord
is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the
poor. He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach
deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the
blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the
acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book and he
gave it again to the minister and sat down. And the eyes of
all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he
began to say unto them, this day is the scripture fulfilled
in your ears. And all bear him witness and
wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. Gracious words poured out of
his mouth. Grace flowed out of his mouth. Can you imagine being the man
who heard him say, here, knowing the condition of this man? Can you imagine being the man
who heard him say, arise, Take up thy bed and walk." Never stood up before. Daughter, be of good cheer. Thy sins be forgiven thee. Thy faith has made thee whole. Doth no man condemn thee? No
man, Lord, neither do I. Go thy way, sin no more. Grace,
grace, just everywhere he went, grace flowed out of his lips.
Goodness, kindness, grace, beautiful words. Every word he spake was
a beautiful word. One word, could you imagine hearing
one word, just one word come out of his mouth? You'd say,
that's the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. You know how
Paul said, I heard things? You know what he heard? The voice
of Jesus Christ. He said, you can't even put it
into words. Man, it's beautiful. Wonderful
words of life. Go with me back to Psalm 45. Verse 2 says, Thou art fairer
than the children of men. Grace is poured into thy lips. Therefore God hath blessed thee
forever. Do you know who God has blessed?
It's one person. You know we talk about the elect.
You know who God elected? One person. One person. God blessed one person. People say all the time, Oh,
God is just really blessing me. He's just really been blessing
me. You know what the truth of the matter is? God blessed one
person. Only one person was worthy. And
if we desire God's blessing, it's only going to be found inside
that one person. That's it. If we want to be chosen,
the only way we can be chosen is if we're inside that person.
We're chosen in Him, blessed in Him. All the blessings of
God are in Christ our King. Every single one of them. God
has blessed thee forever. All the glory, all the power,
all the honor, all the praise, everything. He's laid it all
on Christ and we're just recipients in Him. That's all we are. Verse
3 says, gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O Most Mighty, with thy
glory and thy majesty, and in thy majesty ride prosperously,
because of truth and meekness and righteousness, and thy right
hand shall teach thee terrible things. We've seen movies of
battles You know, back in the days of kings, you got the king,
the castle, the army, you got swords and horses and ranks and
bows and arrows and all that kind of stuff. And usually you
always see the king behind the battle. Always. He's always behind it all, just
viewing everything. That's, you know, how's everybody
doing? Up in safety, standing up there in safety. You know
what Moses said about our king? Exodus 15, he said, the Lord
is a man of war. That's what he said, the Lord
is a man of war. Look at Joshua 5 with me, just
after Deuteronomy. Just before judges, Joshua 5, I love this. The Lord Jesus Christ went and
met with Joshua face to face. Joshua 5 verse 13 says, And it came to pass, when Joshua
was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes, and looked, and
behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn
in his hand. And Joshua went unto him, and
said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he
said, Nay, but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now
come. And Joshua fell on his face to
the earth and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my
Lord unto his servant? And the captain of the Lord's
host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot, for
the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did it. He did it. Joshua said, Are you
on our side? He said, I'm the captain of the
host. Moses told the people, fear not,
God shall fight for you. Isn't that wonderful? God shall
fight for you while most kings are cowardly behind the battle. Our king is the captain of the
host. He is the first one in. He's
the first one in. That right there is who he is. We know who he is. That's who
he is. You talk about courage. You talk
about strength. You talk about honor. You talk
about a man to love and a man to follow. You can follow a man
like that, can't you? The king himself, he straps on
his sword and he charges straight into the battle. First. First. Brother Henry's told me
a little bit about his time in World War II. And he was talking
about everybody was fighting. Everybody was fighting. Fighting,
fighting, fighting. He said everybody kept fighting
until they dropped an atomic bomb on Japan. He said as soon
as they dropped that bomb, it was over. I mean, it was over. Christ, our king, is the first
one in. And when Christ went into the
battle, as soon as he went in, it was over. I mean, there's
no battle left. There's nothing else to fight.
First one in, and nobody else goes. Only one in. Go with me
back to Psalm 45. Verse 3 says, Gird thy sword
upon thy thigh, O Most Mighty. with thy glory and thy majesty,
and in thy majesty ride prosperously, because of truth and meekness
and righteousness, and thy right hand shall teach thee terrible
things. Thine arrows are sharp in the
heart of the king's enemies, whereby the people fall under
thee." Do you want to see the king's victory? You know, he's
a man of war and he goes in and he wins the battle. And do you
want to see the king's victory? Here I stand. I am looking at the enemies of
the king who were made to fall by the
sword of his word. Verse 5 says, Thine arrows are
sharp in the heart of the king's enemies, whereby the people fall
under thee. He gloriously made us, his enemies,
his footstool. He made us fall under him. He brought us down, humbled us
down to sit at his feet. And he did that through the arrow
of the gospel. Every soul that he's caused to
believe, that's what he does for every single soul. He shot
the arrow of grace, that arrow of his gospel. The word is his
sword. The message is his arrow, and
he takes that when this message goes out, he takes his bow and
his arrow and he shoots his arrow straight into the heart. Center cries he got me. Thank
God he got me. Verse 6 says, Thy throne, O God,
is forever and ever. The scepter of thy kingdom is
a right scepter. Thou lovest righteousness and
hated wickedness. Therefore God, thy God, hath
anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. These verses are repeated in
Hebrews chapter 1. That clarifies to us over in
Hebrews 1 that this King is our God. He's our God. We're not only bowing to our
King, we're bowing to our God. Hold your place right here, we'll
come just right back, but go to Hebrews 1. Hebrews 1 verse 8, Hebrews 1 verse 8, But
unto the Son, unto the Son, Unto the Son, He said, Thy throne,
O God, is for ever and ever. We just read it in our text,
Psalm 45. That's what he's quoting. That was to the King. That was
to the Son of God. Unto the Son, He said, Thy throne,
O God, is for ever and ever. A scepter of righteousness is
the scepter of Thy kingdom. We are bowing to our God. Our King is our God. John said,
In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, the Word
was God. Our Lord said, I and my Father are one. The reason
that his throne is forever is forever. I love that. You know, you finally find a
president that you're halfway like and you get him for maybe
eight years, sometimes four years. This king's throne is forever. Forever. And the reason it is,
the reason his scepter is a righteous scepter is because he's God. He's God. Back in our text, Psalm
45, verse 7 says, Thou lovest righteousness
and hatest wickedness. And our king proved that when
he cast Adam out of the garden. Adam fell, man sinned, and God
cast him out of the garden. He put a cherubim with a flaming
sword to keep every way. Verse 7, thou lovest righteousness
and hatest wickedness. Therefore God, thy God, hath
anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. Because
our king hated wickedness, he hated wickedness, loved righteousness,
and hated wickedness. For the joy that was set before
him, he endured the cross." All because he hated wickedness. He put that wickedness away from
his people. Therefore, God has anointed him
above everything, honored him above all. All. And he's done it with the oil
of gladness. Verse 8 says, all thy garments smell of myrrh and
aloes and cassia out of the ivory palaces whereby they have made
thee glad. Now, as we stand here with our
eyes of faith, let's see if our God will give us a nose of faith. He said in verse 8, all thy garments
smell of myrrh and aloes and cassia. I read that myrrh smells
clean like lemons combined with a sweet woody aroma. That's what myrrh smells like,
clean like lemons combined with a sweet woody aroma. You want to know what our king
smells like? He smells clean. He smells spotless. One of these days, that nose,
Job said, I know with my eyes I'm going to see him. One of
these days, with this nose, with a glorified nose, I'm going to
smell him. And he's going to smell so clean
and so spotless. He's going to smell like perfection. Absolute perfection. And sinners
who come to Him, they can still smell the sweetness of everything
He bore on that wooden cross. The sweetness of it. Cassia,
it says, smells just like cinnamon. They're interchangeable. Smells
just like cinnamon. That's what the husband in the
Song of Solomon said the bride smells like. He said that's what
she smells like. Our king smells like substitution. He took that on himself. And
here's a wonderful illustration for us. If we don't get anything
tonight, let's get this. Here's a great illustration.
I looked up every source I could on what aloes smells like. Every commentator, I went on
the internet, everywhere I could. I found out everything I'd ever
want to know about aloes, more than I would ever want to know
about, more than I care to know about aloes. I found out about
the aloe tree. I found out about how tall it
grows. I found out about how they take the bark off of it,
and they beat that bark into a powder, and the things that
they add to it. The one thing they never did
tell me, though, was what it smells like. That's all I wanted
to know. That's all I was looking for.
I wanted to know one thing. What does it smell like? That's
the difference in preaching about Christ and preaching Christ. You hear people say things and
yeah, they're right. That's good. That's fine. You
know, I read about all those facts about the aloe tree and
that's fine. That's good. That's good. But all I wanted
to know was what does it smell like? I wanted to experience
it. I don't want to know about it. I want to experience it. But
they never told me. They did say it's prized for
its perfume. So it must be good. Our king
is prized for that smell. Verse 8 says, All thy garments
smell of myrrh and aloes and cassia out of the ivory palaces
whereby they've made thee glad. The ivory palaces are royal palaces. That's where he came from. That's
where his throne is. Verse 9, King's daughters were
among the honorable women upon thy right hand. did stand the
queen in gold of Ophir. Hearken, O daughter, and consider
and incline thine ear, for get also thine own people in thy
father's house. So shall the king greatly desire
thy beauty, for he is thy lord, and worship thou him. And the
daughter of Tyre shall be there with a gift, even the rich among
the people shall entreat thy favor." This is his church. That's
who this is. She's been honored. by Him. It says He set her on His right
hand, the place of honor. He's clothed her with everything
He's clothed with. He's made her beautiful just
like He is. He said, you forget what's behind
you. You forget where you came from.
Don't look back. Keep your eyes on the Lord and
worship Him. Verse 13, the king's daughter
is all glorious within. Her clothing is of raw gold. The bride of Christ is also called
the king's daughter, and the reason is because she's born
of God, born again. He said she's all glorious within,
and the reason is because Christ dwells in her. That's the glorious
part that dwells in her. He took out that stony heart
and He put His own heart in a flesh. And it says, Her clothing is
of wrought gold. She's wearing perfection. She's wearing His righteousness,
His holiness, His blood, His obedience. Verse 14, She shall
be brought unto the King in raiment of needlework. The virgins, her
companions that follow her, shall be brought unto thee." Again,
that's all of God's people. Paul said, I've espoused you
as a chaste virgin. All the virgins. Our Lord gave
that parable of the virgins with their lamps waiting for the bridegroom.
That's His people. Verse 15, with gladness and rejoicing
shall they be brought. They shall enter into the king's
palace. Every single one of them. Every
one of them are going to be brought all the way to the king's palace.
Every one of them. They're going to marry their
husband. They're going to be brought to the king's palace.
They're going to marry their husband. They're going to live
with him. They're going to reign with him. They're going to be
one with him, a joint heir. They're going to inherit everything
he's been given. And it says they're going to be brought there
with gladness and rejoicing. You know, when we get there,
you know what it says we're going to be welcomed to as soon as
we get there? A marriage supper. That's what
we're going to be welcomed into, a marriage supper. That's what
they're going to come into. I'll tell you what, weddings
are happy things. We got a bunch of happiness amongst
us right now. We have a bunch of happiness
in our future. I love weddings. I really do. Weddings are happy,
happy things. They make the heart glad. They remind us of love. They
remind us of the core of two people coming together. Things
don't make us happy. Love does. That love does. And
after the ceremony's over and two people are officially joined
together, one husband, one wife, one name, one last name, we have a wedding reception at
the end of it. And it's gladness and rejoicing.
Isn't it just gladness and rejoicing? Tomorrow, we'll worry about tomorrow,
tomorrow. There's enough evil in tomorrow.
Right now, it's gladness and rejoicing. Thank God for what
He's done. That's what heaven is going to
be. I don't believe we're ever going to leave that supper. I
really don't. I believe it's just going to
be feasting and praising God for what He's done. He brought
the husband and the wife together. Wait a minute, what's my name
again? His name is my name? Thank God. Thank God for what
He's done. Verse 16 says, Instead of thy
fathers, shall be thy children, whom thou mayest make princes
in all the earth." All of this goodness here, it didn't stop
with Abraham and Moses and David. We respect those men so much.
We think they're holier than us, you know. But they weren't. They were sinners just like us,
and God was good to them, and God is still good. He is still
good. He's going to carry His goodness,
carry His promise down through every generation of the world. We have this other generation
sitting here, and our God has promised He is going to have
mercy on their generation. Every single generation. Every
soul He chooses out of every generation. He said, even your
children. I love that. Verse 17, He said,
I will make thy name to be remembered in all generations. Therefore
shall the people praise thee forever and ever. Every generation is going to
be able to say, oh, he's so good. Every generation. So, so good. That right there, 17 verses.
That's what you call bursting with good news. That's what it
is. David said, he started this whole
thing by saying, I am literally bursting with good news. I have
something I can't wait to tell you. I'm bursting with good news,
and it is, isn't it? It's good news. Okay, let's stand
together.
