I titled this message, This Is
Not Home, or The Weeping of God's Children. Now, when I read the
Word of God, and especially I'm going to preach from the Word
of God, the portion of Scripture that I read, I ask questions. Who, what, when, where, and why?
You know, I ask questions and it helps me to get started and
especially working on an outline. And I ask this question, why
were God's people in Babylon? Why were they there? Now, I know
the answer and you know the answer, we know that. But I like to ask
the question and then look at it again. Because we need to
know why they were by the rivers of Babylon and not in Jerusalem.
While they were weeping and not rejoicing, we need to look at
that again. Now turn to 2 Chronicles 36. Let me read a few things here
in 2 Chronicles 36. Look at verse 11. Zedekiah, let
me see how many verses I want to read, 11 through 21. Zedekiah
was 1 and 20 years old when he began to reign, and reigned 11
years in Jerusalem. And he did that which was evil
in the sight of the LORD his God, and humbled not himself
before Jeremiah the prophet. God sent him a prophet. But he
humbled not himself before Jeremiah the prophet, speaking from the
mouth of the LORD. And he also rebelled against
King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God, but he
stiffened his neck, hardened his heart from turning unto the
Lord God of Israel. Moreover, all the chief of the
priests and the people transgressed very much after all the abominations
of the heathen, and polluted the house of the Lord, which
he had hallowed in Jerusalem." That's basically saying they
brought the world into the service. They brought the world into God's
house. That's what they did. And the Lord God of their father
sent to them by his messengers rising up betimes early and sending
because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling
place. But they mocked the messengers
of God and despised his words, misused his prophets until the
wrath of the Lord arose against his people till there was no
remedy. There was nothing else to be done but to send him into
captivity. Therefore he brought upon them
the king of the Chaldees, who slew their young men with the
sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion upon young
man or maiden, old man or him that stooped for age. He gave
them all into his hand. And all the vessels of the house
of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of
the Lord, and the treasures of the king, and of his princes,
all these he brought to Babylon. And they burnt the house of God,
and break down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof
with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels Thereof and
them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon
where they were servants to him to his sons until the reign of
the kingdom of persia to fulfill the word of the lord by the mouth
of jeremiah Until the land had enjoyed her sabbath for as long
as she lay desolate She kept sabbath to fulfill three score
and ten years. That's why They that's why they
were uh by the rivers of Babylon, and
they sat down and they wept. It was because of their sins. Can we not say that most of our
trouble comes from our own sinfulness? Can we not say that? Sometimes what we call a trial,
we say the Lord has given us a trial, just might be the chastening
hand of God because of sin. because of sin. However, God
ALWAYS REMEMBERS HIS PEOPLE. The Word of God says in Psalm
30 verse 5, ìFor His anger endureth but a moment In His favor is
life. Weeping may endure for a night,
but joy cometh in the morning." God raised up Cyrus, as we know
the story, and set them free to go back home and build the
temple, build the wall, restore things. But here we have God's
children in captivity because of their sins. Their hearts are
heavy. And I wrote down some things
here as reasons for a heavy heart. Satan makes our hearts heavy
at times by temptations. He tempts us. We are tempted.
And nobody goes through this life, no child of God goes through
this life untempted by Satan. The world makes our hearts heavy.
They make our hearts heavy. The worst of all these, our own
sins. Our own sins make our hearts
heavy. They make your heart heavy. They
make my heart heavy. How can I sin so much against
light and love? How in the world can I do that?
But I do. And you do. Our own sins make our hearts
heavy. David said in Psalm 51, Restore unto me the joy of thy
salvation. He lost it because of his sin
with Bathsheba and Uriah. You know if you read over in,
I forget where I read it at this week, but Uriah was named among
the valiant men of David. He was one of the valiant men,
his most prized men. And then here's something else
here. The chastening hand of our Father
can make our hearts heavy. In Hebrews 12, 11, Now no chastening
for the present seemeth to be joyous. Nobody ever enjoyed being
chastened. Not if it's real chastening.
But it's grievous, he said. In Isaiah 26, 16, Lord, in trouble
have they visited thee. They poured out a prayer when
thy chastening hand was upon them. His chastening hand makes
our hearts heavy. We know we've sinned against
God. We've sinned against the one who loved us and gave himself
for us. That ought to break our hearts.
Now verse one, he says here, by the rivers, plural, plural. By the rivers of Babylon, you
know Babylon represents the world. There we sat down, I can read
it like this, by the rivers of the world, by the rivers of the
world, there we sat down heavy hearted, yeah we wept when we
remembered Zion. That tells me you forgot her,
you forgot God's people, God's service. You know, this is the
body of Christ. To forget this is to forget Christ.
It's to forget Christ. Listen, Babylon was a rich place
with many rivers, very fertile ground. To the natural mind,
it's a playground of pleasure. It is the place where a man can
fulfill the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and where
the pride of life flourishes It flourishes there by the rivers
of Babylon. In Jeremiah 51 13, O thou that
dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, rich in treasures,
thine end is come in the measure of thy covetousness. But this
world is rich in treasures, isn't it? To the natural man, but now
to God's children, this is not our home. This is not home. And God has to wean us from this
world. And I'll tell you that weaning takes some chastening
because it takes a while for us to be weaned. We're not as weaned as we think
we are. And riches, listen, the riches
are dangerous. They're dangerous. There's nothing
wrong with them until they get ahold of you. They control you
instead of you controlling them. Jeremiah 22, 21, I spake unto
thee in thy prosperity, but thou saidest, I will not hear. This
hath been thy manner from thy youth, that thou obeyest not
my voice. I spoke to you in prosperity,
but you didn't want to hear me. You'll listen to me when I chasten
you. That's right. You'll call upon me when I chasten
you. But when I bless you and prosper you and you are in prosperity,
you won't listen to me. Prosperity can be dangerous.
It can be dangerous. Be careful what you pray for.
Be careful. But listen, it's not the place
where a child of God finds real happiness. You don't find it
by the rivers of this world. That's not where we find our
real happiness. The things of this life are very
transitory and oftentimes very troubling. Very troubling. And you'll notice here again
that Babylon has many rivers. Babylon, she has many pleasures. You know, in the Word of God,
she's called a whore. Babylon's called a whore. And
Babylon represents the world. So to love this world is to love
a whore. It's to love a whore. It's exactly right. I want you to look over in Revelation
17. No, yes, I think it's Revelation 17. I think that's it. I think
I wrote down the right one. Revelation 17. And there came one, verse one,
there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vows and
talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither, I will show unto
thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many
waters. These waters represent many peoples
and nations and tongues, with whom the kings of the earth have
committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have
been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. So he carried
me away in the spirit into the wilderness, and I saw a woman
sit upon a scarlet-collared beast full of names of blasphemy, having
seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was arrayed in
purple, scarlet collar, and decked with gold and precious stones
and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand and full of abominations
of filthiness of her fornication. And upon her forehead was a name
written, Mystery Babylon, the great mother of harlots and abomination
OF THE EARTH. Look in verse 15, And he saith
to me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth,
are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues. This
world, this world is represented as a whore, sells herself for anything, for
anything. And to love the world is to love
a whore. Which is very clear here. But now the church has
one river. The church has one river. Babylon
has many rivers. It's like the broadway, there's
many ways. But salvation is one way, Jesus Christ. Revelation
22 1 he showed me a pure river of water. He didn't show me a
pure. He didn't show me a pure rivers He said it showed me a
pure river of water of life clears crystal proceeding out of the
throne of God and of the Lamb Our one pleasure is God. Our
one pleasure is the Lord Jesus Christ. The world has many rivers,
many pleasures. You can sit by and you can entertain
yourself and you can be entertained all the way to hell. But God
has one and it flows from his throne, his sovereign throne. And you and I know that Christ
is the water of life. He's the water of life. Babylon
has many religions. Just pick one. Just pick one. You know, there was a weatherman
on TV back home many years ago. He would always sign off by saying
this. I'm sure Vicki remembers this. He'd always sign off by
saying, go to the church or synagogue of your choice this Sunday. It really didn't matter. It's
whichever one you want to go to. Just be sure you go. Be good
boys and girls. It does matter where you go. Go, I tell you, on Sunday, I
say this to everybody that will hear this message, GO WHERE THE
GOSPEL IS PREACHED. As a lady said to me one time,
she said, I know I need to get back in church. No, you don't.
No, you don't. You need Christ. You need Christ. You don't need to get back in
church. You need the Lord Jesus Christ to save you. And then
you'll be a part of His church. And you'll be in the church for
the first time. You won't have to go to church.
You'll be a part of it. It really matters where you go.
It really matters what you listen to, who you listen to. It matters.
It's a matter, I tell you this, it's a matter of life and death. It's a matter of life and death.
You know, when your kids are young coming up, they just don't
understand why you don't want them to go to these, hear these
other Armenian preachers. And it's like, why can't I go
with my friends here or there, you know? I wouldn't let them drink poison,
would you? That's just like drinking poison. I know what the gospel we preach
here is the gospel. I know that. I tell you this,
if it's not the gospel, there's no gospel. There is none. If
this is not the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, who He is,
what He did, who He did it for and where He is now, if that's
not the gospel, there's no gospel. There's no gospel. There's no
grace and there's no good news in He's done all that He can
do and now I've got to finish it off. There's no good news
in that. That's terrible news. You're
talking to dead people. That's one of the things you
better realize as a preacher. I'm not talking about the Lord's
people. They're alive. But now a lot
of those who are dead, they're dead. They're spiritually dead.
And I'm not going to try to take the edge off to please them. There we sat down, yea, we wept
when we remembered Zion. You ought to weep. We ought to
weep. When we grow cold, like the Laodicean, You look warm,
you're rich and increased with goods. And I tell you what, I
don't know, I don't believe the church throughout the history
of the world has ever been as rich as it is now. You look at
any generation, all the way back to Adam, the church has never
been as wealthy as it is now. We're wealthy, we're wealthy. And I was reading, thinking of
that today, and I thought, Lord, don't let us become like the
layout of sins, rich and increased with goods and in need of nothing.
The worst way to be, the worst way to be is the way we naturally
want to be in need of nothing. When you are in need of nothing,
you're in, you're in no need of the Lord Jesus Christ. You
don't need him at all. The only reason sinners come
to Christ is because they need Christ. My need brought me to
Christ and now He's all I need. My need brought me to Him. And
it scares me that we have, in this day, we have grown so wealthy
and so rich that we can grow cold spiritually.
Grow so cold spiritually. That's what happened to them.
They didn't listen. And they did all those abominations. They brought the world into the
service, into the worship service, into that which represented God
and God's house. And they brought the abomination
of the heathens into that service. Christ and us are the only ones
who need to be in His service. and nothing else, and no one
else. I'm not going to get some athlete
that made a decision, get him to come in here and stand here
and then advertise it and try to fill the pews up. No, I don't
care if there's just two sheep here, two or three sheep. That's
worth giving up everything and moving here and preaching the
gospel. That's worth it. It's worth it. I believe there's
more than that, but it's worth it. If Christ died for you, listen,
if you are the only believer here and Christ died for you,
it's worth me leaving everything, coming here and feeding the sheep,
if it's just one sheep. That's the way I look at it.
I don't look at it by numbers, I look at it who Christ died
for. And if there's one person here
Christ died for, it's worth it all. It's worth it all. There we sat down, yea, we wept
when we remembered Zion. Never take this for granted.
Don't take this for granted, this service, this opportunity. This is an opportunity given
to us of God. This opportunity to come here,
open his word and sing his praises, don't take that for granted because
if so, go read, we ought to read often the letter to the seven
churches. Because the Lord said to some
of them, if you don't straighten up, I'm going to remove the candlestick.
I'm going to remove the gospel. I'm going to remove the pastor.
And when you remove the pastor, you remove the gospel. God doesn't
give a place a pastor if there's no church there eventually. It's
going to dissolve. Don't take it for granted. And
I tell you this, you go read about those seven churches, one
of them will fit this church. Because seven churches will fit
every congregation on this earth. One of those seven will fit them.
And I look at it and I say, Lord, which one's us? Which one of
those is us? Now sometimes, now listen, sometimes
our love for the body of Christ shows up at the wrong place at
the right time. It took them sitting by that
river remembering what God had given them, and they took it
for granted. They took it for granted. In
Zion is God known. In Zion is God worshipped. In
Zion the praises of God are sung, not in the rivers of the world,
not by the rivers of Babylon. They're sung right here in this
church. And when we cannot sing the songs
of Zion, this world is like being in captivity, spiritual captivity.
And sometimes we do go into spiritual captivity by sin. We lose the sense of His presence. We lose the joy of salvation.
That's like captivity. That's like spiritual captivity.
And we can do that. We really can do that. We cannot sing the songs of Zion
in this world when we are in captivity. We hanged our harps upon the
willows in the midst thereof. Our music, our God-given gift
was hung up. Isn't that something? You know, God gives us talents
and gifts, and you know something else? He can take them away.
He can take them away. I'm aware of that. Remember that
man had one talent? He hit it in the ground? The
Lord took it from him. God's given us a gift, let's
use it. Or he will take it. But he says here, we hanged our
harps upon the willows, What an appropriate tree to weep under. The weeping willow. That was
made for sinners. That had to be made for sinners.
The weeping willow. It grows big, but it just, it's
like it just bows down. Made for sinners. I wrote out
here, we are weeping willows. That's what we are. FOR THERE
THEY THAT CARRIED US AWAY CAPTIVE REQUIRED OF US A SONG, A WORD.
AND THEY THAT WASTED US REQUIRED OF US MIRTH, SAYING, SEEING US
ONE OF THE SONGS OF ZION, THEIR ENEMIES MADE FUN OF THEIR GOD
BY HAVING THEM SING ONE OF THE PSALMS." They didn't just sing
a little ditty. We're talking about a psalm.
We're talking about a psalm. The Word of God is what we're
talking about. Seeing us a psalm. It's like this, sing of His power
while you sit there in captivity. Tell me again in the psalm, tell
me again the power of your God while you're sitting here by
the river in captivity. That's cruel. The world is cruel. I'm telling you it's cruel. A RIGHTEOUS MAN REGARDETH THE
LIFE OF HIS BEASTS, BUT THE TENDER MERCIES OF THE WICKED, HE SAYS,
ARE CRUEL. The world's cruel. And they wanted them to do it.
Listen, listen here. And they that wasted us required
us mirth. They said, sing us a song, sing
us a word, and do it like you're happy. Act like you're happy.
Put a smile on your face. You're talking about cruelty.
Man, you talking about cruelty. I mean, they were rubbing it
in. That's what they were doing. How? And I like the response. They didn't bow to it. How shall
we sing the Lord's song in a strange land? We are not to cast our
pearls before swine. Yeah, there's just some people
you can't witness to. If they're going to be belligerent, I'm
not going to cast my pearls before swine. I'm not going to stand
and argue with them. I'm not going to argue the Word of God.
I used to when I was younger. Not anymore. I don't do that.
I don't argue the Word of God with anybody. If they're not
going to listen, I just shut up and change the subject and
leave. We're not going to talk about it. We're not going to cast them
before swine. When they sang, they sang the Word of God and
you're not going to cast God's precious Word before a bunch
of swine. Tell me, he says here, how, you tell me how we can do
such a thing in this captivity before these ungodly heathens. Here is a refusal to profane
the name of God before their captors. You can put a checkmark
on that one. They finally did something right.
We sing not to entertain or to amuse anyone. We sing to praise
the Lord. That's why we sing. Other than
that, we need to shut up if we're not going to sing to His praises.
And we're not going to sing to entertain people on their way
to hell. And that was the self-examination
here in verse 5. If I forget Thee, O Jerusalem,
Bet my right hand, forget her, cunny. The psalmist, if you'll
notice here, the psalmist goes from, he changes the pronoun,
goes from I, goes from we, now to I. Now it's getting personal. It's getting personal. It always
should be personal with us. You know, when we read the word
of God, we should apply it to ourselves first before we do
anybody else. The Lord said, you're gonna, one of you gonna
betray me. One by one, you know what they
said? Lord, is it I? Is it I? That is the proper way
to handle the Word of God. Apply it to yourself first before
you apply it to anybody else. When going to the worship service
with God's people to sing His praise and hear His gospel becomes
lifeless, when it becomes lifeless, let the gift of music leave us. It'd be like Jason there, he
plays the piano. If he forgets the Lord and becomes
lifeless, let him forget how to play the piano. That's what
he's saying. Let me forget how to play the
harps. We hung up upon the willows. And he said, if I forget Jerusalem,
Jerusalem represents the church, the Lord's church, which is what?
The body of Christ. So it's all connected to the
Lord Jesus Christ. GOD'S PEOPLE LOVE JERUSALEM,
THE CITY OF THE GREAT KING. THEY LOVE HIS CHURCH BECAUSE
IT'S THE BODY OF CHRIST. TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER IS TO LOVE
CHRIST. DO YOU WANT TO KNOW IF YOU REALLY
TRULY LOVE THE LORD? DO YOU WANT TO KNOW A GOOD TEST? IT'S IF YOU TRULY LOVE ONE ANOTHER. YOU SAY, I LOVE GOD. THAT'S A
GOOD TEST BECAUSE IF YOU DO, THAT'S BECAUSE GOD LOVES YOU.
God loves you. If you love God, this ought to
comfort your hearts. If you truly love the Lord, you
love Him, then you know this, it's because He first loved you.
He loves me. I love Him and then it should
give me great comfort to know that He loves me or I wouldn't
love Him. The love of God would not be
shed abroad in my heart if He didn't love me and I didn't love
Him back. If I do not remember thee, verse
six, I'm going to have to move along here. Let my tongue cleave
to the roof of my mouth. Let my tongue grow silent. If
I do not use my tongue in praise first, then let it not be used
for anything else. Let it stick to the roof of my
mouth. Lord, don't even let me open my mouth to say anything
else if first my tongue's not used in your praise. That shut a lot of people up.
If I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief, joy. You know, there's
a lot of things I enjoy. I thought about it too. When
I've read this, I've read this over and over. I've been working
on it for, I really like to say it like
this. It's been working on me. Somebody asked me one time, he
said, how do you go about preparing a sermon? I said, well, I have
learned that the best sermons are the ones that work on me.
Those are the best ones. The ones I work on, you can tell
it. But the ones that work on me is of God. If I prefer not Jerusalem above
my chief joy. Now, whatever your chief joy,
if you don't prefer being here, worshiping the Lord and hearing
the gospel, you got a real problem. You either got a real spiritual
problem or you're just dead to one or the other. If seeing the praises of God
with His people is not my chief joy, then don't let me enjoy
anything else. Listen to Psalm 8410, For a day
in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a
doorkeeper I tell you what, it'd be easier to be a doorkeeper. I think the doorkeepers, I'm
glad God had doorkeepers. I'd rather be a doorkeeper in
the house of my God than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. To
dwell in those tents of wickedness, rich, increased with goods and
in need of nothing. I'D RATHER BE A DOORKEEPER IN
GOD'S HOUSE." And then it turns, it turns. Remember, here's a call for vengeance. You know, God's judgments are
righteous, just as His love is righteous, so is His judgments. Remember, O LORD, the children
of Edom, the children of Esau, In the day of Jerusalem, who
said, RASH, RAT, LAMP BEAR, LAMP BEAR, they were saying LAMP BEAR,
they hated Jerusalem, just like they do now over there, they
still do. Even to the foundation thereof, remember their evil
against the church. There's such a thing as a righteous
indignation, you know that? Now you think when you read the
last three verses it's kind of out of place with the psalm.
It just takes such a turn. But I'll read you something here
in a minute. Oh daughter of Babylon who are
to be destroyed The world is going to be destroyed. HAPPY
SHALL HE BE, HAPPY SHALL THAT PERSON BE THAT REWARDETH THEE
AS THOU HAST SERVED US. One day God is going to destroy
the false religion, Antichrist, Antichrist. You know who the
Antichrist is? It's everyone who doesn't believe
on Christ. You are Antichrist! But God is going to destroy all
false religion, and this world is marked for destruction. Turn
over to 2 Thessalonians. 2 Thessalonians, let me start
reading in verse 6. 2 Thessalonians 2 Seeing it is a righteous thing
with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you. It
is righteous. And to you who are troubled,
rest with us when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven
with His mighty angels, they're His, in flaming fire, taking vengeance on them that
know not God and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus
Christ. When He stood before Pilate, He opened not His mouth, But when He comes back, He's
coming back in flaming fire. In flaming fire, taking vengeance
on them that know not God and that obey not the gospel of our
Lord Jesus Christ, who shall be punished with everlasting
destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory
of His power, when He shall come to be glorified in His saints
and to be admired in all them that believe. Because our testimony
among you was believed in that day. I can tell you who's saved. Those who admire Jesus Christ. Those who admire him. You look
for him, you admire him. And happy shall he be, verse
nine. And happy shall he be that taketh and dasheth thy little
ones against the stone. Ooh, that sounds tough, doesn't
it? That sounds tough, I tell you. Our God's a consuming fire. We
got to preach that too, don't we? We want to hide that? You
want to hide that? Then one day they wake up and
they face God who's a consuming fire? You know, the watchman,
if he's a good watchman, he's got to warn the lost as well
as feed the sheep. I'm aware of that. Listen, hell is the just reward
of the unbelieving world. You know what Paul said? If any man, and that's any man
or any woman, love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be anathema
maranatha. Let him be accursed. Let him
perish under the wrath of God. That's what he says. If you don't
love the Lord Jesus Christ, he said you deserve to go to hell.
UNBELIEVERS NEVER TAKE SIDES WITH GOD, THEY ARE ALWAYS DEFENDING
THE CREATURE. UNBELIEVERS NEVER TAKE SIDES
WITH GOD, THEY ARE ALWAYS DEFENDING THE CREATURE. UNBELIEVERS NEVER
TAKE SIDES WITH GOD, THEY ARE ALWAYS DEFENDING THE CREATURE.
UNBELIEVERS NEVER TAKE SIDES WITH GOD, THEY ARE ALWAYS DEFENDING THE CREATURE.
UNBELIEVERS NE Revelation chapter 19, and after
these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven
saying, Alleluia, Alleluia, salvation and glory and honor and power
unto the Lord our God, for true and righteous are his judgments,
for he hath judged the great whore which did corrupt the earth
with her fornication, And hath avenged the blood of his servants
at her hand. And again, they said, hallelujah. They didn't, they wasn't, I'm
telling you, heaven rejoices when he cast the wicked into
hell. Is that too hard? Is that too hard? They said, hallelujah, hallelujah. And her smoke rose up forever
and ever. And the four and 20 elders and
the four beasts fell down and worshiped God that sat on the
throne saying, amen, hallelujah. And a voice came out of the throne
saying, praise our God, all ye his servants and ye that fear
him, both small and great. When the wicked, when God cast
this unbelieving world into hell, the whole host of heaven He's
going to shout, hallelujah. Now we say that now, but we are,
we are not perfect. We're not perfect. It'd be hard
to say that right now in casting your loved one into hell. I'm
telling you the truth. We pray for them. We beg God's
mercy on them, don't we? We beg God's mercy on them. I
don't want to see any of them perish. I don't. And I pray a
lot. I pray a lot for some loved ones.
I pray for you. I pray for the ones that are
in this congregation that are lost. I do. I pray on a regular basis
for them. But when we have the mind of
Christ, and this old sinful body's gone, this old sinful mind is
gone, and these old sinful affections are gone, and we can actually
honor God as God is to be honored, we will shout hallelujah when
God cast the wicked into hell, no matter who they are. That's the truth. And I just
read it to you, just read it to you. This is not home. And because
of our sins, too often we're made to weep. We're made to weep. But thank God He doesn't leave
us alone. He didn't leave them alone. He
brought them out of captivity. He brought them out. All right.
