No Blood -- N0 Forgiveness

Hebrews 9
John Chapman December, 9 2021 Audio
0 Comments

In John Chapman's sermon titled "No Blood, No Forgiveness," the main theological topic addressed is the significance of the redemptive power of Christ's shed blood as essential for the forgiveness of sins. Chapman articulates key points that emphasize the necessity of bloodshed in God's redemptive plan, citing Hebrews 9:22, which states, "Without the shedding of blood there is no remission." He argues that the sacrifices under the Old Covenant, including the blood of bulls and goats, were insufficient to atone for sin while Christ's unique sacrifice—His own blood—accomplished what the symbolic sacrifices could not. Scripture references, including Leviticus 17:11 and Revelation 5:9, illustrate that true atonement is achieved solely through the blood of Jesus Christ, highlighting its critical role in justification, sanctification, and acceptance before God. The practical significance of this doctrine underscores the assurance of forgiveness through Christ's sacrifice, encouraging believers to recognize the profound implications of His blood in their lives and to testify to its power in the face of sin.

Key Quotes

Turn to Hebrews chapter 9. Hebrews chapter 9, this whole
chapter is my outline. I have 28 points because I have
28 verses. Now I'm not going to cover each
verse in depth. That's not possible. But it is the outline. I'm learning. I'm learning as
I go. I guess when I quit learning, it's time to die. It'd be a good
time to die when you quit learning. But I'm learning to just use
the scriptures. Let the scriptures speak. God
has promised to honor his word. Not my words, but his word. And I want us to look at this
tonight. And I titled this, and there
could have been a lot of titles, the one we just sang, Power in
the Blood. But the title I gave it, No Blood,
No Forgiveness. And I took that from verse 22.
Without shedding of blood is no remission. Without the shedding
of blood, there is no forgiveness of sin. But now it's not just
shedding of blood, it's whose blood was shed. That makes all the difference
in the world. There has been a lot of bloodshed on this earth
since the fall of Adam. I mean, if you took the bloodshed,
it would drown us. Rivers of it. Just rivers of
it. But you know, all that blood
wouldn't put away one sin that's been shed since the fall. Blood
that's been shed, just take the martyrs. Starting with Stephen. All of their blood that was shed
wouldn't put away one of our sins, would it? It wouldn't put
away our sins. But the blood of Jesus Christ has put away all our sins. And I would to God that I had
the ability to preach that as it ought to be preached. Such
a gospel, such good news ought to be preached in a lot better manner than I'm
able to do it. It's humbling that God would
use clay pots. Paul said that the ministry has
been put in earthen vessels, he's telling the Corinthians.
He's put this ministry in earthen vessel, clay pots, crack pots,
wheat pots. But God's put this ministry in
men like me, men and women like you. You ladies, you witness
the gospel where you are. God gives you opportunity to
witness the gospel, and you men, you witness the gospel, and I
stand here and I preach the gospel. He's put this in clay pots, that
the power and glory may be of God and not of us. It's evident
it's not of us. If God saves anyone, if He saves
anyone of us, we wind up saying, He did it. I'm just a messenger. I'm just like a vessel there
that's holding that water. I'm just an instrument in God's
hand. But I thank God for the blood. We can't make too much
of the blood of Jesus Christ, can we? I cannot make too much
of the blood of my Lord. By it, we are justified. By it, we are cleansed. By it,
we are sanctified. By it, we are accepted. By it,
we are forgiven. Forgiven through the blood of
the Lord Jesus Christ. Can't make too much of it. Isaac knew something about the
blood, didn't he? When he and Abraham were going up onto the
mountain, and Abraham was going to make Isaac a sacrifice. But
Isaac didn't know it at that point. And he said, Father, here's
the fire and here's the wood, but where's the lamb? He knew
you couldn't get blood out of fire and wood. And that's why
he said, where's the lamb, the sacrifice where we got killed
in the blood? Because it's the blood, the scripture
says, it's the blood in Leviticus 17, 11, it's the blood that makes
atonement for the soul. Not repentance. You know, repentance
is a gift of God. It's a gift of God. But repentance
never puts away sin. You can cry your heart out till
the day you die over sin, and it won't put it away. Repentance
will not put away the sin you're repenting of. It shows a work
of grace. It shows a work of God in the
heart. It's evidence of the work of God. It's evidence of faith.
You know repentance is evidence of faith. You can't have one,
not the other. But it does not put away sin.
It's the blood. It's the blood that puts away
sin. In heaven they sing of the blood. Let's go over to Revelation chapter
5. In Revelation chapter 5 it says
this, in verse 9, And they sung a new
song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open
the seals thereof, for Thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to
God by Thy blood, out of every kindred, and tongue, and people,
and nation. You have redeemed us by Thy blood. We've been redeemed by the blood
of Jesus Christ. So let's make much of that which
God makes much of Himself. Put that on your refrigerator.
Put that in your memory bank. Don't forget that. Put that down
as a nugget. That which God makes much of,
let us make much of. And He makes much of the blood.
He does. Without the shedding of blood,
there's no remission. Now let's just look at this chapter. He
starts out here and he's going to talk about the tabernacle
and the ordinance of it, and it was ordained and given of
God. And these things pointed to Jesus Christ, and He fulfilled
these things. But they in and of themselves,
now listen, they in and of themselves were useless. It's the one they
pointed to. You see, so many of the Jews,
they didn't get past the ceremonies. They didn't get past those things
that were given as types and pictures and patterns. That's
all they were given for. There were some who saw past
those to the Lord Jesus Christ. They saw the Lord of glory. They
saw Him by faith, now just like you and I do. Now it says, then
verily the first covenant had also ordinances or ceremonies
of divine service. That is, God gave them. They
didn't come up with this. You know, you can go into all
these different cultures around the world and they've got these
superstitious worships and they've got all these ceremonies they
go through, all this hocus pocus, voodoo stuff. God didn't give
that to them, but now what the Israelites went through and what
they did and the ceremonies they pertained, Did? God gave it to them. God gave
it to them. Ordinances of divine service
and a worldly sanctuary, one given and erected in this world. For there was a tabernacle made.
The first, now listen, it was made with hands too. Men, Moses,
Aaron, they made this tabernacle. You see that we're going to see
later the tabernacle that true tabernacle was made without hands,
speaking of the body of Jesus Christ. But this one, this was
a type, this is a picture. And that tabernacle that was
made, it was made out of badger skin, it was common. It looked
like all the other tents, all the other tents around, it looked
like all the other, a very common looking tent outside. The glory
of it, the beauty of it was on the inside. God was in Christ,
the scripture tells us. So there was a tabernacle made
The first wherein was the candlestick. This is the first part of the
tabernacle. The candlestick, the table, the showbread, which
is called the sanctuary, and all these represent Jesus Christ.
And after the second veil, the tabernacle, which is called the
holiest of all, which had the golden censer, the Ark of the
Covenant, overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden
pot that had manna, we know this is all representative of Christ,
Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant. And over it, the cherubims of
glory shadowing the mercy seat, of which we cannot now speak
particularly or in detail, just like right now, I don't have
time to speak in detail of each one of these. But we will see
that Jesus Christ fulfilled them. They represent Jesus Christ,
the showbread, the candlesticks, everything in that tabernacle
represented Christ. Now when these things were thus
ordained, they were ordained of God just as Jesus Christ was
ordained of God to come into this world and tabernacle among
us. The priest went always into the first tabernacle accomplishing
the service of God. But into the second went the
high priest alone. It wasn't priest, plural, it
was priest, singular. One time a year. That was it. One time a year, he would go
into the holiest of holies, and he would take the blood, and
he'd go in there and sprinkle the mercy seed. And he'd do this
one time a year. And nobody would go in there
but he by himself, because he represents the Lord Jesus Christ.
Now, he said, and to the second went the high priest alone once
every year, not without blood. If he had gone in there without
blood, they would have dragged him out of there. with that rope
that was tied to him. It would have pulled him underneath
that veil. When those bells quit ringing, it was on his feet.
It was on the bottom there. When those bells quit ringing,
that means he's dead. That means he's dead, and they
pull him out of there. So it's not without blood. He dare not
go into that tabernacle without the blood, just as you and I
dare not to go before God Almighty apart from the blood of Jesus
Christ. We don't enter into His presence apart from the blood.
We have no business there, we have no access there apart from
the blood of Jesus Christ. Not without blood which He offered
for Himself and for the heirs of the people. He was just as
sinful as the people that He took the blood in there for.
But now we know this, that our Lord, that our High Priest knew
no sin. He knew no sin. He had no sin
to have to offer for. But He did have our sins. He
went in there with our sins. But He went in with blood. And
it was His blood. Now the Holy Ghost, by this ceremony,
once every year, He's saying something. He's saying something. and let you and I hear it." What's
he saying? Here's what he's saying. That
the way into the holiest of all, into heaven itself, God's presence,
that's the holiest of all. Whoever God's presence is, that's
the holiest of all. The way into the holiest of all
was not yet made manifest. It has not yet been revealed.
This is not it. That's what he's saying. This
is not it. You know, look, I was thinking today of the mercy of
God. For 2,000 years, God is speaking
and giving these types and these pictures. It didn't just happen
one day. God does not sneak up on anybody. This went on for 2,000 years
from Moses to Christ. He showed them this. It was day
after day, year after year. And it went on for 2,000 years.
And the Holy Ghost was saying that the way to the holiest of
all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle
was yet standing. The first tabernacle, that earthly
tabernacle, that one that was made with hands, which was a figure. That's all it was. That's all
it was. It was just a figure. It was
a shadow. You know what happens when the sun comes up high noon? The shadow flees away. The Lord Jesus Christ does away
with the shadows. The Son of Righteousness is risen.
The shadows are gone. which was a figure for the time
then present in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices that
could not, could not more effectively be shouted. What can take away my sins? Nothing
but the blood of Jesus Christ. They could not make him that
did this service perfect. And God said it must be perfect
to be accepted. And God is saying all along in
the repetition of this, every year, every year, He's saying
in the repetition that this is not it. This is not it. It cannot make Him that did this
service perfect, listen, as pertaining to the conscience. It couldn't reach to the heart.
It couldn't cleanse the heart. It couldn't go past this outward
flesh. Only the blood of Jesus Christ
can give you a clear, clean conscience before God. Happy is he who condemns
not himself in the things which he allows. Only the blood can
give you a clear conscience before God Almighty. Nothing else can
do that. We see men and women trying to
do everything they can do to quiet their conscience. That's why this profession of
therapist is so popular in our day. People want their conscience
to be quiet. They want it to be quiet. They
just want it to just not be screaming at them. God gave everybody a
conscience. And the law is written on the
heart. It's written on a conscience. But the only thing that can give
you a clear, clean conscience is the blood of Jesus Christ.
Nothing else. He couldn't do it. Which stood
only in meats and drinks and diverse washings and carnal ordinances. Carnal, that means they used
these earthly things and God used these things of the animals
and all these sacrifices and rituals they went through were
earthly things. Carnal things, earthly things. They were just
carnal ordinances. It posed on them until the time
of Reformation. But, now we've come to the good
news. You see, these things were just
types, pictures, patterns. But now, now we come to the real. But Christ being come in high
priest, the Son of God hath come, it says in 1 John 5, and hath
given us an understanding. Do you understand what you have
read? Remember what Philip said to that eunuch? Understandest
thou what thou readest? Do you understand what you're
reading? Do you? Do you understand what we just
read? I do. I do. I'm not the best at articulating
it, but I understand it. I understand. I understand what
I'm reading. Thank God I understand. Thank
God you understand what you are reading. I was listening to a man this
past week, and he was, making references to the scripture and
completely misquoting the scripture, completely misquoting it, and
completely taking it out of context. And as I listened to it, I thought,
you have no idea what you're talking about. You have no idea
what you're talking about. I am 100% confident I understand
what I'm reading. Do I understand everything, the
full depth of it? No, nobody can plumb the depths
of God's Word completely. Jesus Christ. But you understand. Because the Son of God has come
and given us an understanding. But Christ being come a high
priest of good things to come. Good things. What are these good
things? Righteousness. There is no righteousness,
but He is. He is the Lord our righteousness.
Justification, now that only means, you know, justification
only means something to you if you know something about guilt.
If you know that you're guilty, I mean, you know it. You know
it more than just intellectually, but you know it. In your heart,
you know you're guilty. But at the same time, you know
you've been justified through the blood of Christ. You've been
justified, sanctified, accepted, forgiven, Oh, these are the good
things, good things. Of good things to come by a greater
and more perfect tabernacle. Not made with hands, that's to
say, not of this building. They're not made with hands.
You see that tabernacle that God tabernacled among us, see
back in the Old Testament, The presence of God was among the
Israelites in the tabernacle, the Shekinah glory, in the holiest
of holies. God's presence was there. That's
where they did business with God, was in that tabernacle.
Well now, this tabernacle was made without hands. A virgin
shall conceive and bring forth a son. And you shall call His
name Jesus. And it's in that man, Jesus Christ,
that God tabernacled among us. You know, when God speaks of
walking among His children, you know how He does that? In
His Son. In Christ. He walks among us
in His Son. Everything we know about God,
we will know about God in His Son. Through His Son. And this tabernacle was not made
with hands. It was made by God. Creation of the Holy Spirit.
The human body and nature of Christ. And neither by the blood
of goats and calves, He didn't come here to offer the blood
of goats and calves. Why would he do that? Aaron did
that, his sons did that, every priest since that time did that. There was no need for the Lord
Jesus Christ to come and do that. Listen, even, this is powerful,
I think this is a powerful statement. Even him himself offering them
would not enable them to put away my sins, even if he offered
them. Because it's not the right kind
of blood. It's got to be the blood of God. It's got to be
the blood of the God-man. We were redeemed, Paul said in
Acts 20, 28, we were redeemed, purchased by the blood of God. Neither by the blood of goats
and calves, but by His own blood. His own blood. This proves His Humanity. This speaks so loud of His humanity. You know, there are times we
need to sit down and really meditate on the person of Christ. His
deity as God, the Creator, as God Almighty in all His glory. And then sometimes we need to
sit down and think of Him as just a man. This is a real man. A real man who knew no sin. Just like me and you. Just like his brethren. By his own blood, he entered
in once. How many times did that high
priest enter in? Year after year after year. Now it says in the scriptures
that it was 2,000 years from Moses to Christ. So 2,000 times into that Holy of Holies. But
Jesus Christ entered into the Holy of Holies one time. One
time. He entered Him once into the
holy place. And He's not talking about that
tabernacle in the wilderness or that earthly tabernacle. He's talking about in heaven.
in heaven, the holy place in heaven. Having obtained, not
trying to, not hoping to, He entered into that place having
obtained eternal redemption for us, having obtained it. He didn't stop until He got the
job done. The last thing He said on the
cross was, It is finished. He obtained eternal redemption. This will never be repeated.
This will not be repeated. For if the blood of bulls and
goats, and the ashes of heifer sprinkling the unclean, if it
sanctifies to the purifying of the flesh, these outward things,
how much more? He's showing here the superiority
of the Lord Jesus Christ over the types in the pictures. over
those things in the Old Testament that God gave. Yes, God gave
them. And then God took them away. So how much more shall the blood
of Jesus Christ, who through the eternal Spirit, God, that's
who He is, God. This is God. This is God. This is mind-blowing, but this
is God offering up the sacrifice of Himself. This is God bringing
the blood. This is God. Who through the
eternal Spirit, capital S, offered Himself without spot to God.
Purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
And for this cause, He's the mediator of the New Testament,
the New Covenant, that by means of death for the redemption of
the transgressions that were under the First Testament, those
Old Testament saints who believed, who believed, He redeemed them the same way
He redeemed us. Their sins are put away by His
blood as our sins are put away by His blood. Not one sin was
ever put away by what was offered by way of bulls and goats. But
by His blood, all the sins of all the elect were put away at
one time, at the cross. For the redemption of the transgressions
that were under the first testament, that they which are called, called
effectually, might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
Now for where a testament or a will is, there must also of
necessity be the death of the testator, Where testament is
a force after men are dead, otherwise it's no strength if he's still
alive. But here's the glory of it. Now listen, here's the glory
of it. The one who made the will died. Okay? Now the will can be enforced.
But he rose from the dead and he lives to enforce it. No one
ever came back from the dead to enforce their will. No one. Except one. Except one. That's Jesus Christ. He came
back and now He lives to enforce the will. The will of God. Whereupon neither, He says here
in verse 18, neither the first testament was dedicated without
blood. That first testament, that first
will and testament, it had a dedication of blood. The blood of bulls
and goats, because it was just a type, it was a picture, it
was just for a time. But there was bloodshed for it.
And it was sprinkled with blood. Listen here, verse 19. For when
Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to
the law, he took the blood of calves and goats with water,
scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book and all
the people. No one is saved without the blood.
No one. Saying, this is the blood of
the Testament which God has enjoined to you. Moreover, He sprinkled
with blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry.
And almost all things are by the law purged with blood. And
without the shedding of blood, there's no forgiveness. Sin demands
death. That's what the blood says. Sin demands death. The soul that sinned shall surely
die. It shall surely die. And without this death, and without
this blood, and without this sacrifice, there's no forgiveness
of sins. You can't be forgiven. Because
God Almighty, and this is important, because for God Almighty to forgive
me of my sins, He has to be satisfied. His justice has to be honored
before He can forgive me of my sins. And I have that. I have that in the blood of Jesus
Christ. I have that. You have that. You
who believe, you have that in the blood of Jesus Christ. It was therefore necessary that
the patterns You see, that's all these things were out there
in the wilderness, the tabernacle and all. They were very important
because God gave them. They were very important because
they pointed to Jesus Christ. But they were just patterns.
My mother used to, when we were growing up, she made the girls
most all their dresses. She would get a pattern. I remember
she would buy a pattern and she'd lay it out on the table and lay
it out on the lay the garment out, and she'd lay that pattern
down, trace that out, and then she'd go sew it. Then she'd make
them a dress. But my sister didn't wear the
pattern. They didn't go to school with the pattern on. They went
to school with a dress on that was made from the pattern. See,
that dress is the result. It's the real of the pattern. And it's just a pattern of things.
It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the
heavens. God has just given us a glimpse
of the things in heaven. There's just a pattern of things
in heaven. Let me read it again now. It was therefore necessary
that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified
with these. Patterns purified with patterns.
But the heavenly things themselves, You? You? You see, you're the result. You're
the result. You? The heavenly things themselves
with better sacrifices than these. For Christ has not entered into
the holy places made with hands. That's not where He's at. See,
you've got to really put yourself, if you and I can put ourselves
back in that time zone. If we could take time travel
and go back in time, travel back there, what they were brought
up under and what they learned, and they saw these things. They lived with these things. They lived with them. And He's
pointing out to them. To these Hebrews. This is written
to the Hebrews. He says, Christ has not entered
into the holy places made with hands. He didn't go back into
that tabernacle that was made with hands. He was just a figure
of the true, but He's in heaven itself. He entered into heaven
itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us. You see,
that high priest, he went into the Holy of Holies behind the
veil, and he went back there and represented the people, to
offer the blood on behalf of the people. Jesus Christ has
literally gone into heaven itself to appear in the very presence
of God for us. He's there for us. Get a hold of that. Get a hold
of it. Nor yet that he should offer
himself often as a high priest enters into the holy place every
year with the blood of others. He's not going to do this again.
They were so used to this happening year after year, you know. They
were so used to that. And what He's setting forth here
is the superiority of Christ over the Old Testament priests,
the sacrifices, the blood of the bulls and the goats. He's
saying that the Son of God has come, the Messiah has come. The
true sacrifice has come. The true blood has been shed.
The blood of atonement is His blood. And He's entered into the presence
of God for us. He's entered into the holy place.
And He's not going to do this again. He's not going to do this
every year. He's not going to be sacrificed,
crucified year after year after year. It's just one time. That's how effectual His work was and is. Because it says in verse 26,
for then must he have suffered since the foundation of the world.
But now, once in the end of the world, well, that ought to get
our attention. Let's not grow lazy. Let's not
grow sleepy. Spiritually, I'm talking
about spiritually. Let's not just get in a spiritual stupor. We're
in the end. Now, if this was written about
that around 2,000 years ago, where are we at now? Where are
we at now? We're really at the end, aren't
we? He did this once, and the end
of the world hath He appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice
of Himself. He put away sin. I don't know
how anyone can read the Word of God. I know how. They're dead as a hammer. And
when you're dead, you're dead. But it says here, He appeared
to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. If sin's been put
away by the sacrifice of Christ, how can anyone go to hell? How
can anyone perish if that's for everyone? Once in the end of the world
hath He appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, and after this judgment,
so Jesus Christ was once offered, one time, the sacrifice offered
one time, because of who He is, He got the job done. He doesn't
have to do this again. So Christ was once offered to
bear the sins of many. Don't you thank God that you
are one of the many? Don't you thank God you are one
of the many? Because there are many out there that don't believe.
There are many out there that there's no hope for. So Christ was once offered to
bear the sins of many. And here's what distinguishes
the many. You say, well, who are the many?
Who are the many? Who are the elect? Who are they?
It gives us a plain description of them right here. And unto
them that look for Him. Are you looking for Him? Are you looking for Him? Unto them that look for Him shall
He appear. That's the ones He's going to
appear to. The ones looking for Him. But to them that look for
Him shall He appear the second time without sin. That's already been dealt with. It's over with. The Lord has
already dealt with this sin matter. This sin issue that separated
us from God, He has already dealt with. And He's going to appear
the second time without sin unto salvation, unto full salvation.
That's when you and I will receive the full salvation of our souls. You know, right now, you and
I are being saved. You know that? We're being saved. We're being conformed to the
image of Christ. When you and I are tried and
heartaches come along, let's remember this. We're being conformed
to the image of Christ. It's not, why is He doing this
to me? I mean, we got the answer. You're being conformed to the
image of Christ. He chastens us because we are sinners. We are sinners. We're perfect
in Christ, but we're not perfect in His life. And we need chastening. We need conforming. We need pruning. We need to be pruned. That we
might bear much fruit. You want to be a fruit bearer?
You want to bear much fruit for the glory of Christ in this life
before you die? Well, there's going to be much
pruning for that to happen. I'm looking for Him, and I know
some of you are looking for Him. And I thank God for the blood
that puts away our sin. When you feel the burden of sin,
you can go before God and you can plead the blood. It's not,
Lord, I'm sorry for what I did. I am, that's true. I'm sorry
for it. I say this in my prayers often,
let his blood be propitiation for my sins. I say that often
because I know that God can do that and be a just God and forgive
me of my sins. I know that, I know that.
