In his sermon "Our Father in Heaven," Paul Mahan addresses the significance of prayer in the life of a believer, emphasizing that it is fundamental to one's relationship with God. He argues that true prayer is marked by sincerity and communion with God rather than a performative act intended for public admiration, drawing distinctions between the Pharisaical practice of prayer and the authentic prayer taught by Christ. Scripture references such as Matthew 6:5-9 are employed to illustrate the need for heartfelt prayer, as well as John 8:44 and Romans 9:6-8 to clarify that not all are children of God by default—only those born of God through faith in Christ. Mahan highlights the importance of recognizing God's sovereignty in prayer, stating that kingdom work and personal sanctification derive from God’s will alone, underscoring the Reformed doctrine of grace and the believer's reliance on God's power.

Key Quotes

“Prayer is vital to the life of a believer. I heard someone say it is the breath, the life’s breath of a believer that he gives when he first gives that new birth, born of God.”

“The children of God are children by God's choice. And by new birth, you must be born again.”

“We need to pray: 'Lord, send your Holy Spirit... Let it set our affection, our hearts, our minds, everything right now on things above.'”

“If any man can save you, another man can damn you. But what God does is forever, and it's eternal.”

What does the Bible say about the importance of prayer?

The Bible emphasizes that prayer is vital for believers, as it is considered their life's breath.

Prayer is depicted in Scripture as essential for the life of a believer, akin to their life's breath. Jesus taught that men ought always to pray and not lose heart (Luke 18:1) because without Him, we can do nothing but sin. This highlights the importance of constant communion with God, relying on His strength and guidance through prayer in all circumstances. The apostles echoed this sentiment in their writings, reinforcing the call to 'pray without ceasing' (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Through prayer, believers express their dependence on God, acknowledge His sovereignty, and seek His will in their lives.

Luke 18:1, 1 Thessalonians 5:17

How do we know that God is our Father?

God is our Father by His sovereign choice and by the new birth through faith in Christ.

The relationship of believers to God as their Father is grounded in Scripture, emphasizing that not all humanity can claim God as Father. According to John 1:12-13, it is those who receive Christ and believe in His name who are given the right to become children of God. This new birth is a sovereign work of God, not based on human effort or lineage (Romans 9:6-8). Jesus makes it clear in John 8 that those who do not recognize Him cannot claim God as their Father. Thus, true sonship comes by divine election, grace, and faith in Christ, signifying a profound spiritual transformation.

John 1:12-13, John 8:42, Romans 9:6-8

Why is it important for Christians to recognize God's sovereignty?

Recognizing God's sovereignty brings comfort and assurance to believers, knowing He controls all things.

God's sovereignty is a central theme in Scripture, reminding believers that He rules over all creation and is in control of every aspect of life (Psalm 103:19). Understanding God's absolute sovereignty provides believers with comfort in times of uncertainty. It affirms that nothing happens outside of His divine plan and purpose (Ephesians 1:11). Furthermore, this recognition leads to a humble dependence on God for all things, affirming that salvation is entirely His work, not ours. Consequently, acknowledging God's sovereignty encourages believers to submit to His will and trust in His good and gracious plans, knowing that He works all things for their ultimate good (Romans 8:28).

Psalm 103:19, Ephesians 1:11, Romans 8:28

What does 'Thy kingdom come' mean in the Lord's Prayer?

It signifies a prayer for God's reign to be realized in our lives and the world.

'Thy kingdom come' reflects a desire for the comprehensive reign of God, both spiritually in the hearts of believers and in the world at large. Jesus preached about the Kingdom of God, which is established through His work and is a manifestation of His authority and rule over all creation. This part of the Lord's Prayer is a plea for God's dominion to take effect, penetrating our lives and the lives of others, ultimately culminating in the fulfillment of His eternal kingdom. It shows the believer's longing for transformation, where God's will is done on earth as it is in heaven, aligning their desires with God's perfect purpose and His overarching authority over human affairs.

John, thank you Robin. Matthew 6 now, go back to Matthew 6 with me. Prayer is vital to the life of a believer. I heard someone say it is the breath, the life's breath of a believer that he gives when he first gives that new birth, born of God.

They said of Saul, our Lord said of Saul, who later was named Paul, the apostle, he was a religious man and he prayed often as a religious man, religious people do. That's what our Lord said there. He warned us about these Pharisees and hypocrites who who like to pray and be seen praying, that's why they pray. They want other people to think they're good Christians. He said, don't do that. Don't you do that.

Saul prayed, but when the Lord revealed himself to Saul, put him into dirt, then he told, it was Ananias, he said, behold, he prayeth. He's calling on God now. Prayer is calling on the Lord, whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Calling on the crying of the Lord, communing with the Lord, speaking to the Lord.

Here it says your father, the Lord Jesus Christ prayed always, didn't he? He was always in communion with his father. He prayed always, always. And he taught us, he told us that men ought always to pray. Why is that? Because Christ said, without me, you can do nothing but sin. And he told us to always pray, and his disciples learned that lesson. They asked him to teach them, and they learned that lesson, and they wrote in their epistles that we pray without ceasing, didn't they? Pray without ceasing.

And everything, Paul wrote, by prayer and supplication, let your request be made known unto God. So calling on God, prayer, is calling on God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, without whom we can do nothing. If God doesn't bless us this morning, if God doesn't speak to us, if we don't come from the heart, we won't hear a thing, we won't be blessed, we won't worship God from the heart, from the spirit, and truth, we won't do it.

So we call on God, Lord, send your Holy Spirit, keep back the things from this world, keep us from being distracted and thinking on these things. Let it set our affection, our hearts, our minds, everything right now on things above. We just sang that song. And how many times we sing it? Come, thou almighty king. If you prayed that, I keep saying pray it, it's a prayer in song. If you sing that, come and thy people blessed and give thy word success, spirit of holiness on us to sin. You will. He said, open your mouth wide and I'll fill it. You know that this is the mouth of the soul Not that. Here, Isaiah 55 almost preached on that. And I gotta get to my text. He said, here and your soul shall live.

So, prayer. Disciples saw our Lord praying always and they heard him pray. Oh my. And they wanted to pray like he prayed. No man can, can they? But they said, Lord, teach us to pray. After he was praying, Lord, teach us to pray. We won't pray like that. You know, we don't know what to ask for. And when we do ask, we often ask amiss, James says, consuming all our own lust. And most of the time, it's I, me, and mine. Bless me, bless me. Lord, forgive me, me, me, me. This is not about me right here. This prayer is us. The disciples heard him pray and they, Lord, teach us to pray. And he did, and you know, he repeated this. This is repeated. He told them this one time before, and now this is on the sermon on the mount that they heard.

All right, look at verse five. He says, and this is important. When thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are. They love to pray standing in the synagogue, the corner of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Should we take that literally? Absolutely. We don't pray to be seen. People love to stand on the courthouse steps, you know, in front of the school, that they may be seen. No, no, no. We're not praying to be seen by men or even heard by men, but to be heard by our Lord. That's who we're praying to, unto.

Read on, verse six. When thou prayest, enter thy closet. When thou shut thy door, pray to thy father, which is in secret, and thy father which seeth in secret. Didn't he say in another place that the Lord looks on the heart? On the heart. And he shall reward thee. What reward are you looking for? Abraham, God told Abraham, I'm your reward.

Verse seven, when you pray, don't use vain repetition. Now, we pray often the same thing, don't we? We do, over and over again, Lord, forgive us, and Lord, this prayer is a good prayer to keep praying, but what it means is, and you've heard Catholics repeat these like mantras, hail Mary, we don't pray to Mary. God doesn't hear a prayer to Mary, not praying to Mary, our mother, no, no, but our father. And as one mediator between God and man, the man, Christ Jesus, we pray to him. We don't make these vain repetitions like the Muslims do and the Catholics do, no, no, no. And they think they're going to be heard. Barnard used to say, men think they're going to bombard God, gang up on God. He got to hear you. Keep praying, he's got to hear you. No, he doesn't either. But he will hear you by true heartfelt faith in Christ, a broken-hearted sinner. It needs mercy and grace from God, forgiveness and help through Jesus Christ alone. He will hear that every time.

So he said, after this manner, verse nine, after this manner, in this way, pray, our Father which art in heaven. Hallowed be thy name, our Father. Now, it is not my desire, to exclude anyone from the family of God, from the kingdom of God. It is my desire, my heart's desire, like Paul said, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. But they're not. And so they're ignorant. Everyone is not God's child. God is not the father of all mankind. God does not love every single person. No, no, no. Let me give you two scriptures that plainly tell us this. John chapter 8. Go over to John chapter 8. God is not the father of all mankind. Although He made us, He made Adam, but we come from Adam. Okay? The children of God are children by God's choice. And by new birth, you must be born again, born of God, not of the will of the flesh or the will of man or bloods, but of God. It's his work, his power, his will, his choice, just like you didn't make yourself a son or a daughter of your parents, they made you by God's power.

John chapter eight. And it's lying on God to tell everyone that God is their father and God loves them. That's lying on God. John chapter eight, verse 18. Our Lord said, I'm one that bear witness of myself and the father that sent me beareth witness of me. Verse 19. Then said they unto him, where is thy father? See, they don't know him. Jesus answered, you neither know me nor my father. If you had known me, you should have known my father also.

Look at verse 38 over there. I speak that which I've seen with my father and you do that which you've seen with your father. They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Hmm. Jesus saith unto them, if you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham. Down in verse 41. So you do the deeds of your father. They said unto him, we'd be not born of fornication. We have one father, even God. God's our father. Our Lord said in verse 42, if God were your father, you would love me. I proceeded forth and came from God, neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do you not understand my speed? Because you cannot hear my word. You are of your father, the devil." Now, who said that? Jesus Christ. So all men are not the children of God, are they? Jesus Christ said so. And for someone to say so is calling Jesus Christ a liar. Is this important? We're gonna see why.

Romans 9, one more, okay. Romans 9, another scripture, Romans 9. Paul had a desire, I quoted, for his brethren, his kinsmen, according to the flesh, Israelites, sons of Abraham, but they were not, they were not the seed of Abraham. They weren't true Jews. Look at Romans 9, verse, One, I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience bear me witness in the Holy Ghost, I have great heaviness, continual sorrow in my heart, I could wish myself accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen, according to the flesh, they're Israelite. Verse five, whose are the fathers? But it's not, verse six, the word of God takes no effect, they're not all Israel, they're all Israel. Neither, verse seven, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children. But in Isaac shall thy seed become. That is, they which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God. Is that what it says? Do you believe that?

So who is our Lord telling this to? Who is he speaking to this prayer? Say our Father, he's speaking to God's people, his children, his son. Go back to Matthew chapter six. And Paul wrote in Galatians, we're children of God by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, didn't he? Galatians 3.26. Bless God, if you can, call Him your Father. What a high honor, what a privilege, what a holy calling, a heavenly calling. An undeserved privilege that you had nothing to do with. You didn't make Him your Lord, you didn't make Him your Father. He made you His son, His daughter. And He's preaching, He's speaking to His disciples.

Look at chapter 5 quickly, verse 1. You see the multitude. And people get this all wrong. See, in the multitudes he went up into a mountain and he sat down and his disciples came unto him and he opened his mouth and taught them. You see that? Well, everybody heard it, but he's not talking to everybody. He's talking to them. Remember? Them. Him and them. Everybody heard it. Yeah, because they're all accountable. Because he goes on to say, you're the salt of the earth. Isn't that? Isn't it? He said, you're the light of the world. Who? This is his disciples. They're not of the world. They're in the world. They're not in darknesses of it. Neither are you if you know these things. There's some people that get angry with me right now for hearing what I'm saying right now. What am I doing? Repeating what the Lord said. That's all. Being true to God's Word. All right?

Now, in our text, verse nine of chapter six. So he says to his disciples, believers on the Lord Jesus Christ, whom he chose, whom he redeemed. After this manner, verse nine, pray. Therefore pray ye, our Father, which art in heaven. Our Father, which art in heaven. God over all. Where is our God? They said of David, our God, here's our God. Little statues and little this and that. Our Jesus is outside our heart's door. We let him in one day. That's not my God. That's not our Lord, is it? Where is he? David said, my God's in the heavens. Our God's in the heavens. He hath done whatsoever he will. Our God is in the heavens. He's God over all. Our God is God. Our God is God Almighty, Sovereign, Creator, Ruler over all. Our God, our Father, is God. We didn't make Him God. He let us know He's God, revealed Himself.

And what we say of the Father, the honor we give to the Father, we give to the Son. Do you know that we believe Jesus Christ is our Father, is our God? Call His name. Wonderful, counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father. Thomas found out who he was, didn't he, Thomas? That Thomas and this Thomas, and other Thomases. He said, my Lord and my God, that's what Thomas called Jesus Christ.

Our Father, our Lord God, Jesus Christ, God our Father, our Lord and our God, God our Savior said, He that hath seen me hath seen thee, father. Didn't he? He believed that. There are millions of people that do not believe that. They hate that. I don't. He's my father. He called his disciples little children, grown men. Does that offend you? He said, blessed are they that are not offended in me.

Which art in heaven? Where is Jesus Christ? Where is Jesus Christ? As I said, he's not outside man's heart's door, knocking, hoping they'll let him in. We need to knock on his door, hoping he'll let us in. He is the door. Where is he? Listen to this, Hebrews 1. God at sundry times and divers manners, Spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the world. Who, being the brightness of his glory, and express image, the exact person, God manifest in the flesh, upholding all things by the word of his power. He's talking about Jesus Christ, he hasn't changed the subject.

When he had by himself purged our sin. By himself, I say. By him, I say, Paul said. Sat down. Where? At the right hand of the majesty on high. That's where he is. Scripture says he's seated on the circle of the earth. Is that your God? No, that God is your father. My, my, my.

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. This separates the God of the Bible and his people from all others. Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts. We don't call any man Father, Holy Father, we call one Holy Father, and that's Jesus Christ. Holy, holy, holy. Listen to Psalm 99. Listen to this. Psalm 99, oh my. The Lord reigneth. I could read the whole psalm. Let the people tremble. He sits between the cherubim. Let the earth move between the cherubim. Isaiah, he said, when I saw the Lord in chapter six, high and lifted up, his train filled the temple. He said the two seraphs on either side cried day and night one thing, holy, holy, holy, that's what they cried.

Here's what David wrote, he said, let the people praise thy great and terrible name, terrible name? For it is holy. Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his footstool for he is holy. Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his holy hill, for the Lord our God is holy. He said it four times. Holy, holy, holy, holy. Hallowed be thy name. This sanctifies God, Christ, those born of God, those who know God. It sets them apart from those who don't. The Lord our God is holy. We call no man holy, Father. We call no thing holy things. God alone is holy. We fear his name. We magnify his name. We reverence his name. We make mention his name is exalted. We don't have it on our t-shirts. We don't have it on our bumper stickers. We don't have it anywhere. He's too holy. We fear his name. You know what it means to fear his name? It's just what I said. We fear his name. Is that your God? Or that's your father? Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.

Look at the next verse. Thy kingdom come. Thy kingdom come. He's God our king. This generation has no concept, no idea of a sovereign. A sovereign king is one who can do as he will, with whom he will, just because he will, and nobody can say a thing about it. That's our God. That's Jesus Christ. He's king of kings. He's Lord, and you don't make Him Lord, God made Him Lord.

In Psalm 2, God says, I have set my king on my holy hill of Zion. He says, now kiss the son lest he be angry. Didn't they? That's Psalm 2. You know these things. Because he declared to you this decree that Jesus Christ, he's made him king, both Lord and Christ and all things are in his hand to do it as he pleases. That's a sovereign. A true sovereign is one that does as he will, with whom he will, because he will, and none can stay his hand or say you can't do that. Yes, he can. And that's what he does. Aren't you glad?

This king is so sovereign, he's king of king. Our king, our Lord, says the king's heart is in the hands of the Lord. Like the rivers of water, he turneth it with us where we will. So we need not fear anyone but him, right? We fear what our leaders are going to do. Do we fear what other world leaders are going to do? Who is the leader of the world? The king of kings, the Lord of Lords. It's ought to give you such pain. That's our God, and he's my father.

I keep laughing when I say that because I used to think as a boy my dad was stronger, bigger, stronger, faster, wiser, smarter than anybody in the world. He could leap tall buildings in a single bound. Every now and then he'd show me his arm. Remember, John, you were preaching on that one. He'd make Barry's arm. I'd see his muscle and say, nobody can lick my dad. Well, it wasn't so. He's just a man like other men, but our God is that way. And he's made bare his holy arm. And what is that arm? Men say he has no hands but your hand. That's a lie. My God has hands, and his name is Jesus Christ. And I'm in his hand. Aren't you glad?

Now, I don't worry about anybody or anything, be it a ruler in Russia or a germ in the air. Our God is in absolute control of all things. King of kings and Lord of lords. Old Nebuchadnezzar found that out, didn't he? Most high ruleth among the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. Thy kingdom come, thy kingdom come, come.

Our Lord one time said this. He said, the kingdom of God cometh not with persuasion, with observation. Christ preached the kingdom, didn't he? He came preaching the kingdom. What was he preaching? When Christ preached the kingdom, what was he preaching? Himself. Kingdom, the dominion of the king. He said it doesn't come with observation. Here or over there, he said, I'm right here. The king has come. What's he doing? Gathering his subject into the kingdom.

He came the first time to establish a righteousness and bring in an everlasting righteousness and pay for the sins of his people. We're going to get to that in a minute. Pay for the sins of his people and defeat the God of this world. crush his head, and then after that, we just read to you that he went back to his throne and sat down where he left his throne, and he never relinquished his sovereignty when he left, and now he picked it back up, and he's reigning and ruling over all, expecting his enemies to be made his footstool.

He said, the kingdom of God's among you, right here. The king has come. They came, he came, Zechariah said, thy king comes, he's meek and lowly, having salvation. That's what Christ preached himself. And his kingdom is the reign and the rule of the Lord Jesus Christ in all things and everything, in the hearts of his people, he has preeminence. And his people want love to have it so. Come and reign over us. That's what we sing in. Come and reign over us. Take us captive. And he does. Ransoms us he takes us leads captivity captive and now you belong To the king and he calls you his son his daughter Child of the king he tells us pray thy kingdom come on earth Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven Thy kingdom come into our hearts, our minds reign and rule over our children. Lord, send the gospel of your power and your kingdom into the hearts, the minds of our children, please. We pray that all the time, don't we? Thy kingdom come.

The gospel is the power. The gospel of the kingdom is the power of God and salvation. We need saving all of us and our children. And this is how he does it. One way. He does it one way. And so we pray. Lord, send the kingdom into the heart of some rebel. That's more. Take them captive. The God this world has them. You're the king over him. Take him. Bind that strong man. And take that captive captive. Isn't that what we pray? Thy kingdom come. Isn't it? Is that your heart's desire? More than anything? There is nothing else. Kingdoms come and kingdoms go and this one's about over. None of them last very long, you know that? The Medes, the Persians, the Greeks, Alexander the Great, the great United States of America. But there's an everlasting kingdom. I want to be a part of it, don't you? I want you to be a part of it. And you, and you, and you. and is one who determines that. And so we pray, our father, thy kingdom come, thy will be done.

It is the great satanic delusion in the mind of human being that man has a free will. That lie was started by Satan in the garden and perpetuated by his sons in his seed. It's a great satanic delusion that man has a free will. He does not. God has free will. It is God that worketh all things according to the counsel of His own will. Don't shout, preacher. Shout it from the housetop. It is God that worketh all things after the counsel of His will. When He's pleased, everything is according to His will. And only when he's pleased, like Paul said, when it pleased God who separated me from my mother's womb and called me by His grace to reveal His Son in me, set up His reign and rule in me, that's when I was saved, not when I let Him win, and when He let me know that I'm God, that He's God, and Christ came for you.

He breaks, if it's the will of God, he will break that proud self-will that's enmity against God like Satan, against God and against his Christ and show them all, he shows all his children that he has free will. And that gives them great peace and comfort. Because it is God we know. If we do anything, it's God that worketh in us, both the will and do of His good pleasure. It's not of the will of the flesh, it's the will of man. We know that. We know that. That if anybody come, God makes them willing in the name of His power. Aren't you glad? Aren't you glad?

If a man can save you, another man can damn you. A man can convince you of something, another one can unconvince you. But what God does is forever, and it's eternal. It's according to his will. You believe that? Is this your God? Well, he's your father.

Thy will be done on earth. And that's what God's people pray. Thy will be done. That's what they love, that his will is being done on earth as it is in heaven everywhere. that God ruleth among the kingdoms and armies of heaven, among the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whosoever he will. He will.

We love the I wills and the I wills and the I wills of Scripture. Here's the difference between the God of the Bible and man's God. First, man's God, they say, if you will, then God shall do this. If you will, God shall do this. That's not the God of the Bible. God says, I will and you shall. God says, I've spoken it, I will do it. I purposed it, I will bring it to pass.

I love that. Why a preacher? Because it gives God all the glory. And it takes all salvation out of my hands. And I am so thankful for that. Because if there's anything left up to me to do, I'm undone. I don't have the will or the power to quit sinning one sin. Do you?

But according to the will and the power of our God, according to the will and the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, He can, with a word, absolve us of every single sin just by saying so. I mean, I love that!

Somebody turn this on for the first time. I turned on the Pentecostal channel. Fine. This gives me great joy. It thrills my soul. It gives me great delight. All my hope, all my peace, all my comfort is in this God who is God and works all things after his will. And when I speak of God, I'm talking about Jesus Christ.

My God, my Savior, my Father, God, our Father. He says, I gotta hurry. Says in verse 11, give us this day our daily bread. Give us, give us. You know, everything we receive comes from God's hand. What do we have we have not received? Everything's by grace, isn't it? We often say that, well, that's by the grace of God. Everything is. We always say, well, that's providential. Well, name something it isn't.

By the grace of God, I am what I am, Paul says. I know what I know, I have what I have. Down to a morsel of bread. He said, you know the birds, don't you? He said, you see the birds out there? They don't reap, they don't sow. Where'd they get their bread? The heavenly Father feeds you.

You know, he tells us to ask for bread and not only give thanks for it. When he supped with the, Disciples, he says he took bread and gave thanks. That's what we do, we often give thanks. Do we ask for that bread? We need to. We take it for granted. We take things for granted if we don't ask for them.

This is why God has chosen prayer, one of the reasons. Because we ask God for something and he gives it to us and we give him the glory for it. If we don't, we won't. The world thinks, I heard one time, there was a water shortage, and they were interviewing people in New York City, and they said to a woman one time, said, where does water come from? He said, well, it comes from the tap. You turn it on, the water, it comes from the water, the tap, you turn it on, and the water department of New York City, that's where it comes from.

It comes from heaven. It comes from God. Who's praying for rain? Who's thanking Him for the rain? Give us this day our daily bread, Lord. We don't deserve a crumb. We don't deserve a crumb from the master's table. Would you give us this day our daily bread? We have so much, don't we? Do you... Men and I are starting to clean out the freezer. Oh, my. It's awful in it. Really, it's awful. There's never been a more affluent and godless nation in the history of the world. We've got it all. Rich and increased with goods. And don't give God one word of thanks for it. Is it any wonder God's gonna send this whole place, burn it up, huh?

Ask him, just for bread. Lord, give us this day our daily bread. And surely he's speaking of something more than bread. Isn't it? Didn't he say, man doth not live by bread alone. One time they said, Lord, eat. He said, I am. I have meat to eat that you don't know of. Our Lord ate very little. He slept very little. He worked tirelessly from sunup long before sundown, didn't he? He never quit working till the day he hung on the cross. And he said, it's finished. And he sat down, the work's done. But he ate very little. He slept very little, didn't he? He prayed always.

I said, Lord, eat. He said, I am. Just feed him. What is the bread from heaven? What is the bread we need that we need to ask for every day? What is the true bread from heaven? Didn't Jesus Christ say that in John chapter six? I am the bread of life. He that eateth me, my flesh, and drinketh my blood, he hath life. Lord, give us this day our daily bread. May Christ, the gospel of Christ. Are you hungry? Did you come here hungry? If you did, some of you, I believe you are, were, because I see you nodding your head. Does this taste good to you? Bread. I'm not allergic to bread. Some of you are. I'm not critical of that. I'm allergic to something, but I'm glad it's not bread. Oh, am I glad it's not bread. There's people all over the world allergic to this. Mankind in general is. Makes him break out in a sweat and anger. Oh, God's given us, his people, his children, a taste for the bread from heaven, which is Christ.

give us this Christ, can you pray that? Really? Children of Israel ain't bred from heaven for 40 years. And the true children never got tired of it. Some did. Some got tired of it and God tired of them. Get out. You're not going in. But Joshua and Caleb, Moses, a few others, One morning, the manna came, 40 years later, the manna came down and Joshua went, look, would you look at that? Look at that. Caleb in this wonderful, oh, it's like I've never tasted it before. It's life.

Daily, give us our daily bread and forgive us. Give us and forgive us. Our debts. Two things we need. We need Christ and we need forgiveness of sin. In Christ we have them both. Have all things. Forgive us our debts. Forgive us. That's repentance. It's the goodness of God. It's the grace of God that leads us to repent. Lord, give us repentance. Give my child repentance. Forgive us.

You know, if thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, who shall stand? If God marks one sin, if he finds one sin on you, you're not going into God's glory. But there is forgiveness with thee. Where? How? One way, Jesus Christ. Forgive us our debts, our debts to God's law. He says, this do and live. We hadn't done one of them. He says, don't do this. Thou shalt not. We've done all that. And our debts, our crimes keep building. The handwriting of ordinances, the debts to his law, to his debt of glory and thanksgiving we've come so far short of, keeps building and building and building until, and we don't have a dime to pay. We don't have one redeeming quality. We cannot redeem our soul with one act of repentance or one good word, because the debts are too large.

I'm here to tell you. I'm here to tell you that Lord Jesus paid it all. How much? All the debt. That old sin left a crimson stain. He washed it. I hope we'll never sing that again except with Our debts to the law, our debts to God, our Lord Jesus Christ, frankly, freely, forever forgave all, justified us from all things by which it could not be justified. The handwriting of ordinances, John, you wanna hear that? He blotted them out, nailed them to the cross, paid in full, no debt. If you've been forgiven much, you'll love this message a whole lot. What you'll say is like those people at Antioch, would you come next Sunday and preach this again? And the next, and the next.

As we forgive those. They're indebted to that. Didn't he say in verse 14, you forgive men your trespasses, your heavenly father will forgive you. If you forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your father forgive you. Didn't he say in chapter five, blessed are the merciful, they'll obtain mercy. Blessed are the peacemakers, they're the children of God. Didn't he? That's what he said. You notice that this whole prayer is our father, which are in heaven. We say, give us this day. Lord, if you don't give me any bread, would you give my brother bread? I'm having trouble concentrating, Lord, and I'm not worthy anyway. Would you bless my sister for Christ's sake? Oh, he'll honor that. He might give her that and you too. That's the way he works. Give us, forgive us.

Lord, I'm not worthy to be forgiven. I'm a wretched, vile sinner. I don't deserve any mercy and grace. And my brother or sister has trespassed against me, but Lord, I've infinitely more trespassed against thee. Would you give me of forgiving spirit? Would you forgive her as you've forgiven me? Would you forgive me for not forgiving her? Wouldn't the Lord answer that? Hanging on the cross. And this is what the Lord used to strike my heart. Hanging on the cross. people spat in his face, and that's what I did, I didn't give a crap about the gospel. And hanging on the cross, I heard a man preaching these words, Father forgive them, they don't know what they're doing. So, he says, if he prayed that for you, you pray that. And He just might bring you together inseparably forever and never, never to depart. Right? Is that what we want? Thy kingdom. Thy will. Not my will. Not myself. Us. Isn't it? If you're in this thing for yourself, God will leave you to yourself. But if you're in it like Christ for the kingdom of God, you'll be a part of that kingdom. and you'll forgive as he forgave you. That's a fact.

Deliver us from evil, the evil one. The evil one, the God of this world. We're no match for him. I know what these imposters say, just step on the head of the devil. They're in his control. No, no, no, unless a stronger than he takes him. And that's Jesus Christ, that's one. And then we say to our Deliverer. He's our Deliverer. Not the church, not the preacher, not anybody, anything, not some private self-help group. Jesus Christ will deliver. He's the only Deliverer. Deliver us from evil. It's all around us. And the worst thing of all, and the evil we deliver more than anything else, is that evil man within us. Deliver me from me. For thine is the kingdom. Yes, Lord, this is your kingdom. Thine is the kingdom, thine is the power. We don't have any power.

I was gonna read 1 Chronicles 20, Jehoshaphat and all the people with their little ones standing before the Lord. He said, we have no power against this enemy. Our eyes are on you. And he sent one man, Gehaziah, with one message and they just, oh man, thrilled their hearts. And the message was this, stand still and see the salvation. The battle's not yours, it's the Lord's. And if you ask him, Thine is the kingdom, thine is the power.

And what's it all about? Why did he create all things? Why did he save anybody? Why did he create anybody? Why did he save anybody? It's all about his glory. That's what he did. What do you say to that? Amen. Let thee, our man, sound from his people again. Amen.

All right, John, you come lead us in a closing hymn, if you would. All right, let's all stand and turn to number 40. Number 40. Great is thy faithfulness. We'll sing the first and third. First and third.

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father!
There is no shadow of turning with Thee.
Thou changest not Thy compassions, they fail not.
As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning new mercies I see,
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided,
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide
