The sermon titled "To The Elect Strangers" by Paul Mahan centers on the doctrine of divine election as elucidated in 1 Peter 1. Mahan emphasizes the sovereignty of God in the election of individuals for salvation, asserting that this calling is not based on any merit of the elect but solely on God's irresistible grace and sovereign choice. The preacher discusses Peter's acknowledgment of God's foreknowledge and predestination in relation to individual believers’ identities as "elect strangers" scattered in a world that does not recognize them. Key Scripture references include 1 Peter 1:1-2 and Hebrews 11, illustrating the biblical concept of pilgrims and strangers in relation to the chosen people of God. The sermon concludes with a practical call for believers to find confidence and assurance in their identity as elect, highlighting the joy and reverence that accompany the realization of being chosen and kept by God's power.

Key Quotes

“God elected them... They were strangers to the covenant of promise. Strangers to the truth. Strangers to the knowledge of God and Christ.”

“Do you want to? I'll turn for you... That's a ridiculous question. Abraham, I was an idolater. I was 75 years old. Jacob, I was running. But God grabbed me.”

“You don’t believe because you decided to. You believe because God decided for you to.”

“Salvation is something received, not accepted. Received. Something given, not accepted. Received.”

What does the Bible say about election?

The Bible teaches that election is based on God's sovereign choice, not on human merit or decision.

In Scripture, election refers to God's choice of certain individuals for salvation, rooted in His sovereign will and love. Peter opens his first letter addressing the 'elect,' emphasizing that their status comes from God's foreknowledge and grace (1 Peter 1:2). This understanding is supported by passages like Ephesians 1:4-5, where Paul writes that God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world, establishing that election is not based on our actions but is rather a divine gift, underscoring God’s mercy and sovereignty.

1 Peter 1:2, Ephesians 1:4-5

What does the Bible say about election?

The Bible teaches that election is God's sovereign choice of certain individuals for salvation before the foundation of the world, as seen in passages like Ephesians 1:4-5.

Election, according to Scripture, refers to God's sovereign decision to choose certain individuals for salvation, which highlights His grace and mercy. Ephesians 1:4-5 states, 'He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world.' This shows that God's election is based not on any foreseen merit or action on our part, but solely on His divine will and purpose. The elect are described as those whom God has 'foreknown' and set apart for His glory and to receive faith, as demonstrated in 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14, where Paul affirms that God has chosen them 'through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth.' Thus, election underscores the richness of God's grace and the assurance of salvation for those He calls.

Ephesians 1:4-5, Romans 8:29-30, 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14

How do we know God's sovereignty in salvation is true?

Scripture consistently affirms that salvation is by God's grace alone, highlighting His sovereignty in the process.

The sovereignty of God in salvation is firmly rooted in biblical teaching, as seen in passages like Ephesians 2:8-9, which states that we are saved by grace through faith and that this is not from ourselves but is a gift of God. This underscores the idea that salvation is a work of God, not dependent on human effort. Furthermore, Romans 8:29-30 outlines God's plan of predestination, calling, justification, and glorification, demonstrating His control over the entire salvation process. These truths confirm that God's sovereignty is indeed a fundamental aspect of our faith.

Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 8:29-30

How do we know God's grace is sovereign?

God's grace is sovereign as it operates according to His unchangeable will, as seen in Romans 9:15-16 which states that it depends not on human desire or effort but on God's mercy.

The sovereignty of God's grace is evident throughout Scripture, particularly in Romans 9, where Paul discusses God's choice of individuals based on His merciful will rather than any merit of their own. Romans 9:15-16 emphasizes that God has mercy on whom He chooses, and it does not depend on human will or exertion. This teaches us that our salvation is not a result of our works or decisions, but rather is entirely founded on God's sovereign purpose. This doctrine offers profound comfort to believers, assuring them that their salvation rests in God's hands and His unchanging nature, which eliminates all sources of uncertainty or doubt regarding their standing before Him.

Romans 9:15-16, 2 Timothy 1:9, Ephesians 2:8-9

Why is the concept of being elect important for Christians?

Being elect assures Christians of God's purpose and plan for their salvation, providing hope and security.

The concept of being elect is crucial for Christians as it highlights God's intentional act of choosing to save a specific group of people. This assurance emphasizes that our salvation does not depend on our fluctuating feelings or actions but rests in the unwavering love and purpose of God. Knowing that we are part of God's elect community grants believers the confidence to face trials and hardships, as their identity is secured in Christ (1 Peter 1:6-7). Moreover, this understanding inspires gratitude and worship, as the elect recognize the sheer magnitude of God's mercy and grace toward them despite their unworthiness.

1 Peter 1:6-7, Ephesians 1:3-6

Why is the concept of being elect important for Christians?

The concept of being elect assures Christians of their security in salvation and emphasizes God's initiative in their spiritual journey, helping to foster gratitude and assurance.

Understanding the concept of election is vital for Christians as it affirms their security in salvation and reinforces the truth that it is God who initiates and completes the work of redemption. In 1 Peter 1:1-2, Peter addresses believers as 'elect according to the foreknowledge of God,' highlighting that their identity is rooted in God's choice. This assurance leads to a profound sense of gratitude, as believers realize they have done nothing to earn their status; instead, God, in His grace, chose them. Furthermore, this understanding brings comfort amid trials and tribulations, reminding believers that they are part of a divine plan that God orchestrates for His glory. The doctrine of election ultimately calls Christians to worship and honor the God who has graciously saved them.

Go back with me now to 1 Peter 1. This is a wonderful passage of Scripture. We all, those who know it, love it so much. Love all of God's Word. I want to do this morning what an old preacher named A.D. Mews used to say. I want to do some cornbread and tater roll preaching. Do you know what that means? It just means plain preaching down to earth. Cornbread. You like cornbread? You know, when Boaz was wooing Ruth, the Lord brought her from a far country. Boaz set his eye on her, his affection on her. She didn't know him, didn't see him. He saw her. He brought her to his table. set her down, instructed the young men about providing for her and doing this. And then he himself came to where she was and said he reached her some parched corns. He served her up some cornbread. I hope the Lord will do that for us this morning. First, Peter. Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ. Now, his name It wasn't always Peter, which means rock. It was Simon. And the Lord always called him that. You know that? He never called him Peter. He changed his name, but he always called him Simon, didn't he? But the Lord changed him, and he never got over this. And he gloried in the fact that the Lord had chosen him, called him, changed him, revealed himself to him, Peter. I know he never got over what the Lord called him, Peter, an apostle, an apostle, an old fisherman, a nobody from nowhere. Now he's an apostle of God, a chosen vessel to preach the gospel. Oh, I can relate to Simon Peter. Never got over that. And he wrote, he's writing to the strangers scattered throughout different areas. Strangers not to the truth. They were, and such were some of you, strangers to the covenant of promise. Strangers to the truth. Strangers to the knowledge of God and Christ. Hebrews 11. Go back six pages. I'll let you turn. I'm not going to have you turn too much, okay? Hebrews 11. He's talking about strangers in the world. Strangers to yourself. You're a new creature. This is all about the new birth, the first chapter. When the Lord does His strange work, that's what He called it. The new work. And you become strange even to yourself. It's a new creature. a new creature. Hebrews 11 gives the story of Abel, Enoch, Noah, and so on, doesn't it? You take Noah, for instance. God, Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. The Lord revealed himself to Noah, and there weren't anybody in the world with him and a few others that he revealed himself to. And Noah was a strange man to the world, wasn't he? You understand? Look at it. And Abraham, he was an idolater, 75 years old, and he got along just fine with everybody until God called him. Verse 8, By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out, you see, called out, to a place he should have to receive for an inheritance. Remember that? Inherit, receive. Remember that. We just read that. Obeyed, went out not knowing where he's going. But he now knows who got him. He sojourned in the land of promise as in a strange country. Like a fish out of water. This new creature in Christ. Created in God's people. It's like we use the term a fish out of water. Creatures in the ocean, creatures on earth are two different realms, aren't they? Aren't they? And if a fish is up on land, it's not like everybody else's. An animal in the sea. A fish out of water. When God creates this new creature, it's a different Like our Lord Jesus Christ who came down to this earth. He said, I'm not of this earth. I'm from above. Well, we are. And yet he puts this new creature that's spiritual. And it's no longer of this world. Got this old man that is. Got a new man that's not. Look at verse 13. All these people died in faith, not receiving the promises, but having seen them. They saw them very clearly. Not with this eye, but with the eye of faith. And were persuaded of them. Are you persuaded of this, of the gospel, the truth? Uh-huh. Embraced, do you love? And confessed they were strangers. See that? Pilgrims on this earth, passing through. Passing through. It's not my country. Not my people. My country's over there. Can you say that? Can you really? Then this is to you. Go back to our text. This is to strangers, scattered. They're feeling far between. You know that? Elect strangers. There are few and far between. It's got some here, got some in Kingsport, some in Madisonville, some in Spring Lake, some in Houston, outside of town, Lincolnwood, Fairmont, Cottageville, Dingus. Anybody know where Dingus is? There's only a handful in here that knows where Dingus is. Heaven knows where Dingus is. All the holy angels, 10,000 by 10,000 and 1,000 know where Dingus, West Virginia is. They're watching over a handful of God's elect. Strangers to the world. The world doesn't know them. The world doesn't want to know them. Doesn't care about them. Wants them gone like Egypt. Get them out of here. They ain't like us. Strangers. Strangers to ourselves. In Genesis 25, when Rebecca, Isaac's wife, the Lord, she was a barren woman like so many of the Lord's chosen women, Rachel, Rebekah, Sarah, Ruth, Hannah. But when the Lord chose Rebekah for the bride of Isaac, the son, who's a type of Christ, and we're a type of Rebekah, Rebekah had two twins in her, remember? And here's what she said. When the Lord did this work in her, this barren woman, there are two people inside of her. And she said, why am I thus? What's going on inside of me? There's a struggle. One is struggling against the other. What is it? And the Lord said, there's two manner of men inside of you. They weren't there before. Do you find this inward struggle? Two creatures, a new creature, spiritual being of God, and an old man that he hadn't changed a bit. It's a constant battle. You're elect. You hear me? Elect. Can I holler that? I'm not going to holler too much. I can't promise. I'm going to try not to. Brothers and sisters, I'm going to holler what the world hates. Because this is where the gospel started, you know that? This is where the whole covenant of grace and mercy and salvation started in the mind and heart of God. Elect! Chosen, she sang, she played. Not for good in me, awakened from wrath to flee. Oh, how much I owe to God's sovereign electing grace and mercy. Old Simon Peter, first thing out of his mouth. Isn't it? It's his first letter to the church. First thing he says about these scattered strangers is, God elected them. And he knows. He was in a fishing boat. He wasn't worshiping God. He wasn't in the temple. He wasn't in the tabernacle. He wasn't following the followers of Jesus. He was in a fishing boat fishing. That's what his life was. And if Jesus Christ hadn't come by where he was and chosen him that day, he'd have died fishing and missed Christ. And he knew it. So he gloried in. He marveled in. He rejoiced in. He loves God's sovereign election. He knew if God hadn't chosen me, I would have never chosen him. I wouldn't have come. If he didn't say come, I wouldn't have come. Is that you? Elect. Elect. Chosen. Do you want to? I'll turn for you. Paul, writing to the Ephesians, he couldn't get very far, could he, without saying, chosen? Oh, he said, blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has blessed us with all spiritual blessings. in heavenly things in Christ according as He hath chosen us in Christ. You understand, don't you, that Christ is God's elect? Isaiah 42, Behold My servant, Mine elect, in whom My soul delighteth. He's the one that God chose before the world began to do this work of salvation. It's in Him, by Him, for Him. It's for His glory and His honor. The Father honored the Son. A race of creatures didn't want anything to do with God, but God, rich in mercy and great. For His great love were with His love, not all, but many, some of them. Quickened them together, gave them to Jesus Christ. Son, go down there and save these creatures. He didn't come to try to save anybody. He came to save God's elect. And he did it. He did it. Do you believe that? Elect. Did you choose God or did He choose you? I've said before that if you'd ask any Abel or Enoch or Abraham or Noah or Moses, ask any of them, did you choose God or did He choose you? They'd all laugh at you. That's a ridiculous question. Abraham, I was an idolater. I was 75 years old. Jacob, I was running. But God grabbed me. Christ wrestled me down to the ground. Told me what he's going to do for me. Didn't ask me anything. Told me. Is that you? He licked. Chosen. I was going to turn to John 6 and John 13 and John 15. On and on, our Lord kept telling his disciples, you did not choose me, I chose you. Whom do men say that I am? And they all said, they say this and they say that. Who do you say that I am? Peter said, thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. He said, have not I chosen you? Chosen you to know Me. To know Me. Look at verse 2. Verse 2, 1 Peter 1. Elect according to the foreknowledge of God. That means the forelove, the foreordination. That means God set His mind and heart upon His people before the world. You, He said in Amos, of all people on earth have I known. Psalm 139, David said, Lord thou hast searched me and what? Known me. Like Adam knew his wife Eve. Love, a union with. That's exactly what that means, isn't it? That's exactly what that means. An inseparable bond and connection like a marriage. And you can't, where he said, you can't divorce me. Don't you like that? Elect. A union. Known. He said in Matthew 7 to a bunch of people, a multitude of people going to stand before him someday, and he said, I never knew you. Didn't he? For knowledge of God the Father through sanctification of the Spirit. set apart, set apart to be saved, to be in His kingdom. It's His choice. He called it the spirit of adoption. It's His family. It's completely 100% His choice who He puts in His family. You understand? That's adoption. And it's pure sin. The orphan doesn't choose the parents. Come on. The parent chooses his orphan. Adoption. It's his power. It's his glory. Sanctification of the spirit. Sanctify, that is, set apart to believe. Look at verse 21. It says, who by him do believe. You see that? Who by him do believe. You don't believe because you decided to. You believe because God decided for you to. Because God chose you to give you faith. That's Ephesians 1, isn't it? Who believed according to the working of His mighty power. By grace you're saved through faith, and that's what? Not of yourself. Where'd you get it? It's a gift. Not an offer. You can't believe until He gives you this faith. And when He gives it, you can't not believe. It's a gift. It's a gift. Sanctification of the Spirit. I love this. It's all through the Scripture. 2 Thessalonians 2. You knew I was going there, John. We're bound to give thanks to God for you, brethren, beloved Lord, strangers, because God had from the beginning chosen you through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth, whereunto He called you by our Gospel preaching. to the obtaining of the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ. You had nothing to do with this. It wasn't an invite. It wasn't an offer. It was the power of God. Call it God. You like taters? You like cornbread? You like election? You love it. You've received the love of the truth. Very few people love this. Oh, sanctification of spirit, you've heard this illustration, maybe somebody hadn't. It's pretty good. You take a, you've seen a cowboy on a horse and there's a pen of a bunch of captive cows or cattle, little calves, you've seen that, haven't you? And he's on that horse and he's got a rope. And he's got his eye on one of those cows. You've seen this, haven't you? And he's got his eye on one of them, not all of them, one of them. And that horse in here, one like that. And this is God the Father, the Holy Spirit. And he's got his eye on that one. And he's going to separate or sanctify that one from the rest of the herd. And when he's doing this work, that cow knows it. He's got his eye on me. And he's trying to get away. He's not going to get away according to the power and the ability of that cowboy and that horse. And he's got his eye on that cow. And finally he gets it. And you see the rodeo where they run out of that chute and that cow is running from him. And he dives off that horse. And what does he do? What does he do? He lays hold of that. Where does he lay hold of it? He says, heck! And wrestles him down to the ground. Puts him down on the ground like the Lord did to Jacob then. Puts him down on the ground. There's what he's doing. Ties him up so he can't get away. You know you're drawn with cords. Cords of love. He laid hold of you, Jacob. You ain't getting away. Don't you love this? Hey, what's he going to do next? What's he going to do? Why did he do that? This ain't for show, like I wrote you. This is the real deal. He's going to get a hot branding iron with his name on it. It's painful. It burns. It's going to burn in that hell. His name. You're mine. And no matter where you go, I will find you. You've got my name on you. Don't you love that? You love that? Elect! He said, they've got their names engraved on the palms of my hands. They're not going anywhere. Man, I love that. That's like I heard that for the first time. And the world hates election. That's because they're not elect. You've received the love of the truth. You know, if he hadn't done all that, if he hadn't done that, you'd still be running. To what? Destruction. How long will a cow or calf last out there in the wild? Every predator known to man is after them. And so is this world full of devil's field. But we will not fear, for God hath willed. This is the best message you've ever heard. It's the same message you've heard all these years. It just doesn't get any better than this, people. It just doesn't. through sanctification of the Spirit, under obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ, meaning that we are recipients of the obedience of the Lord Jesus Christ. He obeyed God's law perfectly, and we get that righteousness imputed to our account. And yes, imparted, yes, obedient. You once were disobedient, and verse 14 says, as obedient children, not fashioning yourselves, This new man is creating the image of Christ, obedient, but it's primarily obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ. Sprinkling. Why does it say sprinkling, not immersion? Because sprinkling is a particular application of that blood. Particular. When Moses, or Aaron, took the blood of that lamb, it was precious. Not one drop was going to fall to the ground. Not one. Okay. And he took that and everything was purged by that blood. A particular application. He didn't just sling it out there for it to be trodden underfoot. Oh, no. It's too precious. Not one drop's going to fall to the ground. But it's sprinkled on this person. That big dabbed it on the ear, on the thumb, on the foot. Precious blood. You understand? That's why it's called sprinkling. And you've been, you're an elect, chosen vessel to have the blood of Jesus Christ applied to your heart, your mind, your soul, your feet, your walk. Everything has to be purged by blood. Isn't that wonderful? Oh, grace unto you. Peace. And down in verse 18, you know you weren't redeemed by corruptible things. Anything you've done or anything, you don't have any redeeming qualities. You know that? Well, all God's people know that. You weren't redeemed by your faith. You were redeemed by Christ's blood. You weren't saved by your faith either. You were saved by His faith. You know that, don't you, John Davis? Don't you, Patrick? Why do you know that? Elect. Because all that's vain. Tradition received from man. Oh, no. We've received the Word of God from God, the Spirit of God. You know that. Oh, that's why it says in verse 3, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Oh, blessed be our God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to His abundant mercy. I wanted to holler that. Go ahead and do it for me if you want to. Does mercy mean anything to you? Not getting what you deserve. It means everything to God's people. Mercy. Sovereign mercy. He said, I'll show mercy. I'll have mercy. on whom I will. If you love God's sovereign mercy, sovereign grace, you're elect. Which according to His abundant mercy hath begotten us again, born again, unto a lively hope, living hope, a living hope, a real hope, living faith as living stones Not dead doctrine, but this is real, this is life. Christ is life, isn't it? In the Gospel, life really is. Are these words of life to you? Is this how God gave you life? Do you love? Do you eat and drink and love? This right now, anyway, don't you? Don't you? Elect. His body, His blood, this is life. Not doctrine, it's the resurrection. of Jesus Christ. We have been quickened, raised together with Him. We worship a living Lord. We don't worship doctrine. We worship a living Lord. We worship the elect, the chosen one of God. Give Him all the glory and honor. We worship a living Lord. Verse 4 says it, to an inheritance, incorruptible, undefiled, that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you. What is inheritance? What do you hope to inherit from God? Come on. Most everybody in religion, you know, looks forward to going to heaven. Why? Because they think it's a continuation of everything down here. All these things and people, your family and on and on it goes. Heaven is where Christ is. Where God's people worship Him. That's what they do. Oh, there's going to be a new earth. Yes. And I can't rightly speak of it. And I'm going to show you here in a minute. It's called love. Love for a person. That's who you want to be with. That's where you're going to be. You get Him. You inherit Him. It's like Abraham and Lot, okay? They came to a parting of ways. And Abraham didn't want to part, but he said, Lot, you choose what you will. Let's not have this separation. We're brethren. You choose what you will. And Lot chose Sodom. It's a good thing God chose Lot, wasn't it? Or he would have died in Sodom with everybody else. But Abraham, when Lot left and went to Sodom, the well-watered plain, the beautiful and all the riches of Sodom and all that, Abraham said, Lord, what do I get? You know what the Lord said? Me. You get me. And if you have the one who owns everything, you get everything that goes with it. Christ and the unsearchable riches. Oh, my. The inheritance, incorruptible, nobody can change it. Undefiled, no slick lawyer can find a loophole. Why? Because Christ is our advocate. He's the covenant head. He won't ever live as a testator of the will to ensure that we get exactly what He gave to us. reserved in heaven for you. They're kept. There's no period there, is there? For you, they're kept by the power of God. Kept by the power of God. You know, if you keep believing, if you keep coming, if you keep repenting, if you keep asking for mercy, if you keep loving the gospel, if you keep on keeping on, so to speak, you know why? And one reason, you're kept by the power of God. You're elect. He said, I give unto them, who? His people, his sheep. Eternal life. And then what is that? They shall never perish. He said, all that the Father giveth me shall come unto me. And him that cometh to me, I will not know wise. Cast out. Do you love that? Elect. Elect. Kept by the power. Who gets the glory? Christ Himself. Simon Peter knew it. You know, the Lord came and chose him. And he followed Christ, he loved Christ, he believed Christ, he hung on his every word. Christ became his life. He left everyone and everything for Jesus Christ. He really did. And Christ became his life. And one day, many walked no more with him because what he said was too hard for them to handle. They couldn't stand his sovereign grace and mercy and eating his blood. And multitudes left like they have in these last days. And our Lord turned to his disciples and said, Will you also go away? And Simon Peter said, Where? To whom? This is life to me. You're my life. I'm not going anywhere. He said, Simon Peter, I've chosen you. Blessed are thou. Didn't he? Well, Simon did leave. He denied it. He denied Jesus Christ. He reverted right back to that old cussing sailor that the Lord found in the beginning. I said, do you know him? Do you know Jesus? He said, never. I don't know the man. Oh yeah, you do. You're speech betrayed. I don't know him. Oh, I saw you with him. Blankety, blankety, blankety, I am not one of those Christians. What's Peter's hope? He said he didn't know Jesus Christ. What is Simon Peter's hope? Will somebody tell me? That Christ knew him and is not going to let him go. And Christ looked at him. Remember? And Peter went out and wept bitterly. And now he's on the outside. Three days have gone by. And Simon Peter said, I'm not a disciple. I'm not a child of God. I'm not a Christian. I'm not one of the elect. I'm lost. I'm hopeless. I'm a goner. And somebody sent the Word. The Lord said, Go tell my disciples. And Peter He specifically said to call you. And Simon couldn't get to him fast enough. He was in a boat and he dove out of that boat, clothes and all. Sink or swim, I'm going to him. Because why? Because he said to. Kept by the power of God. You can't keep yourself. Oh, but He can. And He does. All His people. Oh, my. Kept from falling away, finally. Kept from leaving. Kept from dying. Kept. He keeps us loving Him. He keeps us believing Him. He keeps us coming. He keeps us calling. If He didn't keep calling us, we wouldn't call on Him. Right? Kept by the power of God. That's God's personal spiritual power of God's Holy Spirit. It's the gospel is the power of God. We're kept through faith itself. You see that? Through faith. You cannot, as I said, you cannot not believe. You cannot not believe. I've, you know, there's been many of, not many, but some of God's people have left for a while and for whatever reason, you know, bad marriages or just getting a hold and the rut and leaving. And, but they never go to false religion. You'll never see them go back to free will, Arminian. You'll never see that. No way. I can't go there. I might go back in the world and seem like that. But if they belong to God, He'll bring them right back into the fold. They can't believe that stuff. They cannot not believe. And I kept the power of God through faith unto salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time. Ready to be revealed. Boy, I can't wait. I'm going to have to. The manifestation of the sons of God. I hope I'm one of His. I believe I'm one of His. But it doth not yet appear. I look in the mirror and I don't see a new creature. Do you? You know something? God does. He looks on the heart. The new heart that He gave. Aren't you glad? Aren't you glad? Thou, Lord, seest me. Oh, my, my. Look at verse... I'm going to quit. Verse 6. Wherein you greatly rejoice. Does this give you joy, what you're hearing? Some of you does. I know. I'm looking at you. I wish sometimes you could see what I'm seeing. I wish... I'm glad you don't see some of this. But I love to see the reaction face-to-face, life-to-life in your faces. You greatly rejoice. Greatly rejoice. Verse 8 says, Whom have ye not seen ye love? You're not faking it. You know, you can only fake it so long. If it's not real, you can only fake it so long. You'll be gone. But if it's real, you can't take it. And it's real. Real love. Whom have you not seen, you love. You do, Ruth. Roberta texted me sometime back, can you love somebody you haven't seen? Yes, that's what she said. She was marveling over that. Though now you see Him not yet believing, you believe God. You've never seen Him. He's never spoken to you out loud. You really do believe God is God and reigning and ruling and everything's in His hand and He created all. Do you really? That's where faith starts in Hebrews 11. By faith we understand that God made this world. He's the Creator. Doesn't that make you glad? Happy? whom have ye not seen ye love, in whom though now ye see him not yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory." Love is what it is. It's love. Do you remember when you fell in love with your spouse? Describe it. It's unspeakable. Really. Do you remember? Do you remember that far back Ed Berry? No, you don't remember ten minutes ago. I'm getting that way. But you fell in love. There you are. Still sitting there. You know what love means? It means you cannot live without that person. You can't live without them. You don't want to. You don't want to live without that person. Is that it? It's love. You live for that person. Oh, you do. I remember when the Lord, when we started, when we fell in love, And you don't make yourself fall in love. No, no, that doesn't happen that way. Love finds you. And I remember I climbed the highest mountain. I'd swim the deepest sea. Leap over tall buildings in the sea. Go days without sleep. To be with her. All I wanted was to be with her. And you know, all these years later, 46 years, I still want to be with her. You want to go to sleep with them. You want to wake up to them. You want to eat, drink. You want to be with that person. You don't want to live without them. You want to live with them. You want to serve them. Giving to them is nothing. You'll give everything you've got because you love them. Is that not love? That's just love. That's just love. And people of the world, how could you give All that money to support the gospel. Why would you do that? Put it in a savings and you can buy a new car. I don't need a new car. I need Christ. And this is nothing. Because everything I have, I've received from him. I'm not giving him anything. I'm returning it. Is that the way you feel? It's love is what it is. Can you love someone you've never seen? I read a book one time about a woman who loved books, and she was ordering books from a bookseller in London, England, a little, small, antique, vintage bookshop in London, England, and she would order books from this man. Well, the man was a widower, and she was too, and he would send her a book. Well, they began corresponding, okay? Letters. This man wrote her letters from afar off. She fell in love with him. She fell in love with him, and he her. You know, she never did see him, and never did meet on earth. Can you love somebody you've never seen? How? Letters. The Word. When he sends the Word through what I'm doing here. The preaching. He says, I've loved you, I've bought you, you're mine. And you fall in love with Him, don't you? And you haven't seen, but you love Him, don't you? Through His Word, through His Gospel. And rejoice with joy unspeakable. And this woman, every letter she got, she waited, she was anxious, she was anxiously awaiting for every word she could get from her, the one she fell in love with from a far country. A letter, a letter, a letter, a letter. Look, and he'd say the same things. The same things. I love you. And here's another book for you. Here's the book of Hosea. Can you? Oh, most certainly. That's the way it happens with every one of them. Christ. And it says, and I close verse nine, I said that a minute ago. But you're like this. And he talks about God's elect going through many temptations and heavy trials. Oh, it's such a precious thing, faith. And what he gives, you'll never take it away. And it's going to be found to the praise and honor of glory of who? Him. And it's something you received, you see. It's not of yourself. You received it, this gift of faith. Salvation, verse 9, receiving the end of your faith, the salvation of your soul, receiving. What you're going to receive in the end is unspeakable salvation. You're going to be saved from everything that threatens to undo us. Saved from this world, saved from The devil-filled world saved from the world, saved from this old man within, saved from the lust of the eye, saved from sin, saved from the wrath of God, saved, saved. You're going to receive salvation. Salvation is something received, not accepted. Received. Something given, not accepted. Received. I'm finally going to be able to illustrate this well. And you will never... Listen to me now. Nowhere in this book does it say, accept Jesus as your personal Savior. There's a reason why it doesn't use that word, accept. That means it's within the power of the person whether or not to accept or reject this offer. Salvation is not an offer. You receive it. What is this? An empty... Vessel. Does it have life? No, it does not. It's an empty, worthless vessel. Right? It can't do anything. It's empty. It has no power whatsoever. It's dead. It's a dead, lifeless, empty vessel. And such were some of you. How is this cup going to get water? Would you accept this water? Would you please? I want to fill you up and I can't unless you let me. It's foolish, isn't it? You're laughing at it. How? It has no power to accept anything. It's dead. It's lifeless. The cup received it. He didn't accept it. I did. I poured it in it. And that's what a picture this is, huh? Christ, the water of life, came to that woman at the well. It was empty. She didn't know what she believed. She didn't know herself. She didn't know Christ. She didn't know anything. She's empty. She's dead. But the water of life came and filled her up. Now do you understand why it does not say, accept him? And anybody that says that doesn't know God. It does not say. Any preacher that says that is a false preacher. Except Jesus. Because you're a receiver. Because you're elect. Because you're kept by the power of God. Because Christ redeemed you. Because it's His power. It's His glory. It's His honor. It's His work. It's Him. It's Him. It's Him. It's nothing to do with you. You're an empty, dead vessel until He chooses you and says, I'm going to fill them up with all the fullness of God, which is Jesus Christ. And you're going to say through all eternity, I have received. What do I have? that I have not received. And so I'm not going to glory in anything, because everything I have, I've received it. Is that you? I see some elect, there's some elect strangers in here. That's strange doctrine in this world, isn't it? It's not to you. Not to you. Okay, John, come and lead us in.
