1 John 5:5

In Paul Mahan's sermon titled "Will You Overcome The World," the central theological topic is the reality of overcoming the world through faith in Jesus Christ, as articulated in 1 John 5:5. Mahan emphasizes that true believers, those born of God, are empowered to overcome worldly temptations and circumstances through their faith, which is a gift from God. Key arguments include the distinction between enjoying worldly things and becoming enslaved by them, underscoring the need for continual reliance on God's grace through prayer, communion, and commitment to Christ. Scriptures such as Luke 17, John 15, and Galatians 2 are cited to illustrate the necessity of remaining in Christ and the call to come out from worldly influences. The practical significance of the sermon lies in encouraging believers to examine their faith, seek an authentic relationship with God, and recognize that true victory over the world is found solely in Christ.

Key Quotes

“Whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world. This is the victory that overcometh the world, our faith.”

“Without me, ye can do nothing.”

“If you love Him, He loves you first. He gets all the glory.”

“The world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.”

What does the Bible say about overcoming the world?

1 John 5:4 teaches that those born of God can overcome the world through faith in Jesus.

The Bible emphasizes that those who are born of God possess the victory to overcome the world, as articulated in 1 John 5:4. This victory is rooted in faith, which is a gift from God. Therefore, it is not merely the individual's determination that conquers the challenges of the world, but the faith bestowed by God that empowers believers to rise above worldly influences and temptations. John also poses a critical question: who overcomes? He clarifies that the one who believes in Jesus as the Son of God ultimately triumphs over worldly trials.

1 John 5:4

How do we know that faith is a gift from God?

Ephesians 2:8-9 states that faith is not from ourselves; it is the gift of God.

The understanding that faith is a gift comes directly from passages such as Ephesians 2:8-9, which affirms that salvation, including the faith that leads to it, is not a result of human effort but rather a divine provision. It underscores the principle that our ability to believe is rooted in God's grace. The act of faith is not merely an intellectual acknowledgment but a spiritual awakening initiated by God Himself; thus, no one can boast about their faith as if it originated from their own capabilities. This foundational truth supports the sovereign grace theology, which highlights God's initiative in every aspect of salvation.

Ephesians 2:8-9

Why is calling on the Lord important for Christians?

Calling on the Lord is crucial, as it reflects our dependence on Him for salvation and strength.

The act of calling on the Lord is biblically mandated and vital for Christians, illustrated in John 15:4, where believers are instructed to abide in Christ to bear fruit. To call upon the Lord signifies recognizing our inability to achieve righteousness or overcome the world independently. Continuous calling illustrates dependence on God's grace for salvation, perseverance in faith, and sanctification. This practice aligns with the teaching that salvation is fully of the Lord’s work, and believers must actively engage in seeking Him through prayer and supplication in all aspects of their lives.

John 15:4

How can Christians commune with God?

Christians commune with God primarily through Jesus Christ, our mercy seat and high priest.

Communion with God occurs through the person and work of Jesus Christ, who serves as our mercy seat, as highlighted in Exodus 25:22. This communion involves approaching God in Christ, recognizing Him as the bridge between humanity and the Holy Father. It is through prayer, corporate worship, and the study of God’s Word that believers draw near to Him, aligning their hearts with His through the gospel. Regular acknowledgment of our need for grace and forgiveness is part of this communion, as believers are called to confess sins before the Lord, who promises cleansing through Christ’s righteousness.

Exodus 25:22

Why does the world hate Christ?

The world hates Christ because His message challenges their sinful condition and self-righteousness.

The animosity towards Christ stems from His declaration of truth that exposes sin and reveals humanity's need for redemption. In John 15:18-25, Jesus notes that the world will hate His followers because it first hated Him. This enmity exists because His presence and message challenge the comfortable status quo of human autonomy and self-righteousness. Rather than acknowledging Christ’s sovereignty and grace, the world often prefers to dismiss His authority, leading to hostility towards the gospel. Thus, Christians must not be surprised when the world rejects the message they bear, as it ultimately points to their need for repentance and faith in Christ.

5. This is the text and I was just
reading this for my own profit and enjoyment and these verses spoke to me and I wanted
us to look at them together. 1 John 5. Verse 4, Whatsoever
is born of God overcometh the world. This is the victory that
overcometh the world, our faith. Who is he that overcometh the
world? He that believeth in Jesus is the Son of God. Overcoming
the world, that's what this text is about, and what this message
is about. I need this. I need this. I asked
the question, will I be overcome by this world? Will you be overcome
by this world? We need to ask ourselves that.
Examine ourselves. Paul said, examine yourself,
see if you be of the faith, if you don't have this faith. He
will be overcome. Now, the word overcome means
to be completely consumed with. To be conquered by. To be overpowered by. In bondage to the world. To be in love with and live for
this world. And our Lord said, look at Luke
17. Luke 17. Our Lord spoke of the world more
than anybody in this Bible. You know that? In John's Gospel,
59 times the Lord speaks about the world. And he warns and warns. Look
at Luke 17. We're in this world. We live
in this world. We use the things of this world. Things we enjoy. But look at Luke 17. Verse 24, and married wives are given a
marriage. There's nothing wrong with those things. Scripture
says, God giveth us all things richly to enjoy. God's the one
who ordained marriage. Eating and drinking? Our Lord
ate and drank. But it says, till the day they
entered into the ark, Noah and his family ate soap. And the
flood came and destroyed them all, everyone and the world. Likewise also, verse 28, as it
was in the days of Lot and Sodom. They did eat, they drank, they
bought, they sold, they planted, they built it. We do those things. No evil in those things. But
the evil is, and the idolatry is, if that's all you think about,
if that's what you live for. The same day, verse 29, that
lot went out of Sodom. How did he get out of Sodom? God laid hold of him and brought
him out, or he wouldn't have come out. And it rained fire and brimstone
from heaven and destroyed them all. Thus shall it be in the
day when the Son of Man is revealed. In our text, it says, Who is
he that overcometh the world? Whatsoever is born of God overcometh
the world. Faith. It's a gift of God. Salvation is of the Lord. One
hundred percent. One hundred percent. It's God's
will. It's God's work. It's God's choice. It's God's call. It's Christ's
work on the cross. It's Christ's righteousness making
us righteous. It's Christ making us acceptable
with the Father. It's the Spirit of God regenerating,
giving repentance. These are not of yourselves.
These are the gift of God, right? It's repentance He must give
us. It's the goodness of God that leads us to repent. Faith
is not of yourselves. It's the gift of God. Perseverance. Love of the truth. God gives
this. It's His work, and so it's His
glory. He gets all the glory. If anyone
is saved, God gets all the glory. Now, here's what the world thinks
is a contradiction. Here's what confuses the world.
If we're lost, we get all the blame. That's not contradiction, is
it? It's not. Those that are born
of God, those who understand They understand. That's Proverbs
8, verse 9. It's all plain to him that understand
it. How do you understand? Well,
you can't figure it out. God has to give you an understanding,
reveal it to you. Well, here's the thing. It's
his will, his choice, his work. It's his call. And yet the scripture
says, whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be
saved. If you don't call, you won't be saved. Is that a contradiction? No, that's what the scripture
says. If you call, He calls you first. If you love Him, He loves
you first. He gets all the glory, you see. I don't want to give any impression
whatsoever, give anybody the slightest thought that salvation
is up to us. It's not. With man, our Lord said, with
man it is impossible, didn't He? Salvation is up to the Lord.
Turn to John 15, first time. John 15. I'm going to give you
some things, seven things that we're told, God's people are
told. We're told to call. Everyone's
told to call, whosoever shall call, but our Lord tells His
disciples to pray without ceasing. to call, to keep calling, keep
crying. Whosoever shall call, be saved.
If you quit calling, you're in trouble. Call. Ask. Seek. Knock. It said, Everyone
that asketh, receiveth. He that seeketh, findeth. He
that knocketh, it shall be over. It's continual. Ask. Seek. Knock.
Asketh. Seeketh. Knocketh. Plead with
the Lord. Lord, save me. Save me. Spare me. Keep us. Keep me. Keep me. Look at John
15. John 15. Call. John 15. Why is that? Why do we keep calling? Why must
we keep calling? Look at John 15. 4. Abide in
me and I in you as a branch cannot bear fruit of itself except it
abide in the vine. No more can ye except you abide
in me. I am the vine. you the branches,
he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth
much fruit. Four. Now look at this. Without me, you can do nothing. He doesn't say some things. He
says nothing. Nothing. With man it's impossible,
but with Christ All things are possible. You can do nothing. Nothing without Him. Nothing.
Salvation of the Lord, 100%. All God's people know this. The
world doesn't know that. The world doesn't believe that.
Mankind thinks that He's a free moral agent, He's a free will,
He's a free thinker, He's able to do anything He feels like
doing, make any choice He can, but that's not what this book's
in. It says, You, speaking to God's people, hath He quickened,
who were what? Dead. A dead man can't do anything. So it's God that calls us from
the dead, dead, unto life. But man, it's impossible. Without
me, you can do nothing. And once he's called us, he tells
us to keep calling. And this is how you know. That
which is born of God keeps calling. Do you find yourself calling
on the Lord all the time? What do you call? If you're like
me, you call pretty much one thing. Help. When I was young, I thought I
could do anything. The older I get, the more I realize I can't
do anything. Help. Call. Just call, it means
to cry, like a baby. Father, Abba, Father. It gives
a spirit. It means to confess. The call
on the Lord is to confess, isn't it? Confess what? Sin. John wrote this in 1 John 1.
He said, if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves. The
truth is not in us. But if we confess our sin, when? One time? To whom? A priest in a little booth? No,
no, no, no. He can't do anything about it.
He's a false priest anyway. We've got one high priest. We
confess to him. He's faithful. And just to forgive
us our sins and cleanse us from all our sins. We can't cleanse
our sins. We can't quit sinning. We call
on him. Who is he that overcomes it?
He that keeps calling. He that keeps calling. Who will?
That's more than enough. He's stating a fact, isn't he?
State of the fact, if you call, God called you. If you keep calling,
he keeps calling you. If you continue, if you're, if
you, if you continue to faith, you're kept by the power of God,
right? And yet he tells us, he exhorts us. There's no contradiction
to this. All right, the second thing,
and it all, I didn't plan this, all these words starting with
C. It just happened that way. There's scriptural word. It's
a good way to remember that. Call. Commune. Commune. Exodus 25. Exodus 25. I want
to have you turn to several scriptures tonight because I don't want
you to take my word for anything. Exodus 25. Commune. That means draw nigh unto God.
Draw nigh unto God. James said he'll draw nigh unto
you. Well, why does anybody draw nigh unto God? Our Lord said,
no man can come unto me. Except what? The Father which
hath sent me. Draw him. Draw me nearer. That's what we
sing. Sing. Draw me nearer. Bless the
Lord. Draw nigh unto God. Where? Where do we draw nigh? How do we look at verse 22? Well,
verse 17, Exodus 25, 17. Thou shalt make
a mercy seat of pure gold. And I thought to myself, if you're
not careful, you'll get stuck right here. But that's a good
place to stay because this is where God tells us to commune
with him. That mercy seat is Jesus Christ.
The ark, it begins to make an ark of Shittemwood, verse 10.
It's all a picture of Christ. But then, verse 21, And thou
shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark, and in the ark
thou shalt put the testimony, the word, that's Christ, he is
the living word, I'll give thee. And there I will meet with thee,
and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, between
the two cherubim, which are upon the ark of the testimony. Of
all things I will give thee in commandment of the children of
Israel. The mercy seat is Christ. There is where he communes with
his people. I will commune with thee in the mercy seat. And those two cherubims, I can't
right now talk about that. But Peter says, which things
the angels desire to look into. But draw nigh unto God. Commune
with God. We need to keep communing with
our God. Where? How? In Christ. Right
here, what we're doing. the worship of God, the house
of God, where the gospel of Christ, the mercy seat is preached."
He said, that's where I'll be. You want to draw nigh unto God? You want to overcome the world?
Or do you want to be overcome by the world? Well, stay out
there in the world, stay away, and you will be overcome by it. Coming to the house of God, where
God's people are, where Christ is. Communion with Him. Fellowship. Remember that? Fellowship. Fellows in the ship. That's communion.
Communion. Look at the next thing. Come
out. Call. Commune. Come out. 2 Corinthians
6. And brothers and sisters, some
of you I sent that outline to. I don't do that. I don't preach
from that. I made that just for you. It
took me extra time. I hope you look at it. Some of
you do. You comment on it. And that's for you to look at
and study. It's a good thing. But come out. Listen to 2 Corinthians 6. Another letter to the church,
to God's people, isn't it? 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians.
Look what he says. Verse 14. He that hath ears to
hear, let him hear what the Spirit sayeth to the church. Verse 14.
Be not unequally yoked, bound together with unbelievers. What fellowship? Communion. What
do you have in common? Nothing. Hath righteousness with
unrighteousness. What communion? hath light with
darkness. What concord? That means what
do you have in accordance with, that is, in common with? With
Christ and Baal. What part? Hath he that believeth
with an invader? What agreement hath the temple
of God with idol? You're the temple of the living
God. As God hath said, I will dwell in them and walk in them
and be their God and they shall be my people. Wherefore, come
out. Does it mean, and our Lord preached,
you know, our Lord spoke more about the world in John 17, his
prayer, than any other place. Nineteen times he talked about
the world. He said, I'm not praying for
the world. He said, I'm praying for them which thou hast given
me, my people. He said, they are not of the world. And I pray
not you should take them out of the world, but keep them from
the evil that's in it. Do you need that? Oh boy, do I. We're in the world. He says we're not of it, and
he keeps reminding us that. Well, if you don't want to be
overcome by it, Look at verse 17. Be separate,
saith the Lord. Touch not the unclean thing.
I will receive you. Be a father unto you. You shall
be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. And that's
Ephesians 5. He shined his lights in the world. Light reproved the darkness.
You can't have fellowship with darkness. You can't follow Christ and follow
his world. You can't be friends with the
world. James said friendship with the
world is enmity with God. You can't walk with God and walk
with the Word. You're unequally yoked. God's people are walking together.
I love that song, We're Marching to Zion. We're all in this yoke
of Christ. We're yoked together. And we've
got one common bond. We have everything in common.
looking to cry, not the right, like two old plow horses plowing
together, not looking to the right, not looking to the left,
looking to Christ. Isn't that right? Not the world. Not the world. No, no, no, no.
Hebrews 11. Turn there. Hebrews chapter 11. Come out.
And that's, I remind you what God did for the children of Israel. What'd he do? Why'd he come down? What'd he say? Exodus 3, what
did he say? Exodus 3, 8. I have come down
to bring them what? Out. Church means called out. Out. Like Lot, like Noah, like
all the children of Israel, called out. Hebrews 11, I love this,
verse 24. My faith, Moses. Where did Moses
get this faith? He just decided to believe God
wanted to Oh no, no. God chose him. He was 40 some
years old. He was moving up the corporate
ladder. He was going to be the next payroll.
But God chose him. He's one of God's elect. God
spoke to him. God revealed Christ to him in the burning bush that
day on that map. He didn't know God. He said,
I think I'll go up and see what this is. And the Lord spoke to
him out of that bush. That's Christ crucified, Christ
going through hell on the cross. He said, I've chosen you, Moses.
And from that day forward, verse 24, because God chose him, here's
what Moses did. He was born of God, verse 24. He refused to be called the son
of Pharaoh's daughter. Choosing, rather, to suffer affliction
with the people of God than to enjoy the pleasure of sin for
a season. Esteeming the reproach of Christ, that is, the hatred
of the world, being cast out by the world, by Egypt. Greater
riches and all the treasures in Egypt, for he had respect
under the recompense of the reward. By faith he forsook Egypt, not
fearing the wrath of the king. He endured to see in him who
is invisible. He walked by faith. Not sad. Chapter 13. Chapter 13. I'm not going to keep you long,
but I want you to turn to this scripture. This is helpful. So needful. It's the things the
Lord tells us to keep us from being overcome. Hebrews 13. Come
out. Come out. He says in verse 12,
Jesus, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood,
suffered without the gate. The world rejected him. He said
that. Here's condemnation. Light is
coming to the world. The world loved darkness rather
than light. He said, no man will come unto me. He said, I am come
that they might have light. Who? His people. It gives him
light. He went into Jerusalem and they
hated him. Fundamental Orthodox Judaism. Judaism. They hated Christ. They hate
him today. And so does fundamental orthodox
so-called Christian religion. They hate the sovereign Christ
description. They love Jesus, the healer,
the helper, the do-everything, feed people and miracle worker,
but not the sovereign Lord on the throne who has all people
and everybody's soul in His hand to do with as He pleases. Not
the one who's standing outside people's door hoping they'll
do something for Him. That's not the Jesus Christ description.
This is the one that seated on the right hand of the majesty
on high, seated on the circle of the earth, who works all things
at the counsel of his will, and none can say his hand. And he's
going to do what he purposed to do. That's the Jesus Christ
description. And they hated him when he said
that then. He said, you're just a man, you
make yourself God. No, you don't understand. He
was God and he made himself a man. He got it all backwards. Religions
all backward. You've got to come out of that
mess. Verse 13, let us go forth therefore
unto him without the camp bearing his reproach. If God calls you
out, you'll come out of modern, free will, man-centered, man-glorifying,
works religion. You'll come to Christ and you'll
be cast out by the world and it'll be just fine with you. Come out. Come out of the world. Come out of religion. Come out.
The church is called out. Look at the next thing. Consider.
Hebrews 3. Consider. Keep in mind. Meditate. Meditate. One of the ladies sent
me an article by someone on meditation recently, an old preacher, a
great preacher. That's a word nobody uses much
anymore, but it's in the Scripture. And, you know, I did that when I was
a young man in the 70s, sat cross-legged and meditated, gazing at my navel. And I had higher consciousness,
you know. I was just a blooming idiot is
what I was. You know what you'll find if you gaze at your navel?
I'm serious. This is what Hindu wisdom says. Buddhism, you know. If you look
within and the navel is the center of your being. You know what
you'll find if you look in your navel? Lent. And that's what you'll find if
you go to Methodist church. Lent. Hogwash. Foolishness. This is wisdom from
above. You need to meditate on. You
need to consider. You need to think on these things.
Hebrews 3, verse 1. Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers
of the heavenly calling. See, who's this written to? The
natural man doesn't receive these things. I'm not talking to the
world. I'm talking to God's people. Consider the apostle. There are men today who still
call themselves apostles. Right down the street here, there's
a so-called church that's got a parking place called Apostolic
Corner. A parking place for the apostles. There are no more apostles. Apostle means a messenger. We don't worship the apostles.
We don't worship saints. They're no more special than
we are. The Apostle. This is capitalized. See that? The messenger of the covenant,
the one who gave the message to the other, the apostles. This
is the apostle, the messenger, the faithful witness from God.
God, whom no man knows except he reveals them to. This is the
apostle and I like the and the high priests. There are no more
priests. I wish that millions of Catholics
all over the world could hear this. It's priestcraft, like
witchcraft. It's priestcraft. It's false. There's one high priest whom
we confess our sins to. We read it there in 1 John 1.
Jesus Christ. He is our profession. Christ
Jesus. Consider Him. Sounds like Hebrews
1 Corinthians 10. Consider. Think on it. 2 Peter.
And we may look at this On Sunday, 2 Peter 3. And what makes me
want to is because Peter keeps saying, I want to remind you,
I want to remind you, I want to remind you that you need to
remember, you need to think on this thing. You need to consider,
you need to be mindful of this thing, you need to be meditating
on this thing, keep these things in mind, consider. 2 Peter 3,
verse 1, the second epistle, beloved, who's he writing to? And there's people the world
over, and false religion takes verse 9, and says God's not willing
that any should perish. He's not talking about everybody.
He's talking about God's people. He's not talking to the world. Beloved, I write unto you, in
both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance,
that you be mindful, always thinking on, considering, and meditating
on the words spoken before by the holy prophets of commandment,
of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior, knowing this first,
shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
their evil desires and covetousness, saying, Where is the promise
of His coming? Where is it? You remember when 2,000 rolled
around? Everybody was kind of nervous. Well, it came and went,
and 25 years later, nobody's nervous. The Lord doesn't come
when men think He's going to come. At a time when you think
not. They said, where is the promise
of his coming? Since the fathers fell asleep,
everything continues as it were from the beginning of salvation.
Well, they're ignorant. This they willingly are ignorant
of, that by the word of God, the heavens were of old. He's
the creator. And the same creator destroyed this world by water.
And verse 7 says he's reserved now for fire. He's going to destroy
it by fire. Do you hear that in modern religion
now? You don't hear it anymore. So verse 11, saying to God's
people, seeing all these things shall be dissolved, what manner
of persons ought you to be? All holy conversation of God.
What should we be thinking about? What should we have our minds
on? What should we be concerned? What should we be taken up with?
The evening news, turn that off. We need to hear the good news.
We need to hear the gospel. The words of man, should we put
any compass, any stock, should we believe anything man has to
say? They're liars for their own evil purposes. Don't listen
to them. Keep these things in mind. Verse
13, I love this. We, according to His promise,
look for new heavens and a new earth wherein dwelleth righteousness. I want out of this. The Lord
calls it this present evil world. Doesn't it? Look at the next
thing. Galatians 2. Crucify. Galatians chapter 2. Crucify. Call. Commune. Come out. Consider. Crucify. Galatians
2. Verse 20, Paul says, I am crucified
with Christ. Paul said, reckon yourselves
dead. Reckon the world dead and dying.
I am crucified, nevertheless I live, yet not I, but Christ
liveth in me. The life which I now live and
the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me
and gave himself for me. Look at chapter 5, Galatians
5, verse 24. They that are Christ's have crucified
the flesh with the affections and lust thereof. That is, Lord,
would you please take these evil desires, lust of the flesh, lust
of the eye, and the pride of the life, and put them away by
your sacrifice on the cross. That's the only way. Lord, forgive me. May these things
be under the blood. May I be covered in the blood.
Look at chapter 6. Jeanette, you love this, don't you? It's
your favorite verse in the Bible tonight. Verse 14, God forbid
that I should glory save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,
by whom the world is crucified unto me and I unto the world. We look back there at Noah, didn't
we? Our Lord says, as in the days of Noah, well, God's people
are in Christ. That which is born of God, they're
in Christ. Like Noah and his family were
chosen and put in that ark for safekeeping. Right? Is that where
you want to be found? In him? That's what Paul said. Well, Noah and his family, when
they were in that ark, they didn't much care about what was going
on out in the world. They didn't renew their voter
registration. I'm trying to make fun of this,
because why are we taking up with a dying world? Polishing, you'll say, polishing
ship, polishing the brass on a sinking ship, like the people
did on the Titanic. And some people were in denial
when that ship, man created it and they said it can't sink.
First voyage. The very first voyage. And he,
who's who in the world was on that ship. And it says some people were
in denial and they were sitting at the, they were being warned,
it's going down, get to the lightboats. And they were sitting in there
and eating their finery and among the crystal and bringing another
glass of champagne and going on and on and it's going down. But when the Ark of Noah was
created, when God designed it and purposed it and had Noah
built it and Noah was a picture of Christ and so is the Ark. Only eight people in the whole
world were in that ark. Why? That's who God chose. No one in his family knew. God
said, come now. They wouldn't have come if God
hadn't come now. And they would have left if God hadn't shut
them in. And that rain would have swamped that boat if God
hadn't pitched it within and without. That's the blood of
Christ. But Noah and his family for seven days. This is a picture
of the very last day. The work was finished. The ark
was finished. The work of Christ was finished.
He says, come. I've come, by the grace of God.
You've come. Haven't you? We want to be found
in him. I believe many, if not most of
us are. That's where we want to be, in
Christ. Don't we? And the doors open, come on in.
They wouldn't come. And the whole world's walking
by, going by, laughing, scoffing at Noah and his family sitting
in that ark while we're all out here having fun. It's not going
to rain, Noah. God loves us all. Got a wonderful
plan for our life. He's got a purpose, all right.
He won't destroy you. And only those in this ark are
going to be saved. And the whole world scoffed and
mocked as they went by. That ark meant nothing to them,
that fool. The world was crucified to Noah,
and he was crucified to the world. They cut him off. Okay, Noah,
just go ahead, just sit there. We're going to carry on our business.
The door shut, and the rain fell. And that ship
floated. A picture of Christ. Only those in Christ, let me
say. Crucified. Crucified. Continue. You've got
to hurry. Romans, no, let's go to Colossians
1. Colossians chapter 1. Continue.
It's a scriptural word. Continue. If you continue. If
you continue, Colossians chapter 1, look at it. Colossians 1,
look at verse 21. You that were sometime alienated
in enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he. You see that? And you. Sounds
like Ephesians 2, but God. That's right, you were aliens,
enemies, you hated the truth, you hated God, all men do by
nature, but God set His love, sovereign love on some, many,
and reconciled us. Verse 22, made us His family,
made peace, the body of His flesh through death. To present you
holy and unblameful and unapprovable in his time. You got to be as
holy as God to be in God's heaven. How are you going to do that?
You're not going to do it. Christ did. Did it for us. Did it to us. Spirit. If you continue in the faith. Grounded and settled. That's
just a fact. It's just a fact. It's also telling
us if we be moved away from the hope of the gospel, there is
no hope. Right. Continue. Grounded and settled,
continue worshiping, continue calling, continue, continue,
continue. If we continue. It's a constraining
grace of God. If we don't, it's our fault. Is that a contradiction? Do you
need them? I do. I'm the preacher. Paul
said this. He said, I haven't arrived yet,
but this one thing I do. I press. This is a pressing matter.
continue that. Continue, continue. That's what
John said. We read it in 1 John 2. If you
continue that, therefore, which you've heard from the beginning,
abide in you. If so, you'll continue in the
Son and the Father. Some go out from us because they're
not of us. If they'd been of us, they no doubt would have
continued with that. Do you want to continue? Can
I continue? You want me to continue to preach
the same thing over and over again? It's how you're kept.
It's how you keep from being overcome. And we come back to the last
word. We come back where we started. Christ said, without me you can
do nothing. So the last word is Christ. Christ. Call. Commune. Come out. Consider. Crucify, continue, Christ. Christ is all. Let me ask you
a serious question. Paul said, The life I now live,
I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me. He said,
I live, I'm crucified with Christ, yet I live, yet not I, but Christ
that liveth in me. Is Christ really your life? And your life is what you live
for and you love, what you long for, what you desire. People live for and love things. The Lord calls it idolatry. Foolish things, the most ridiculous
things. The people that ride motorcycles
have this saying, live to ride and ride to live. What a fool. What a fool. And every other
thing you can think of, family, jobs, and so on. Is Christ really
your desire, your heart's desire? Paul said, I want to win Christ,
be found in Him, oh, that I might know Him, the power of His resurrection. Is it? Do you love what you're
hearing? Can you do without this? Do you want to be in his kingdom?
Or do you not care? It says this in Colossians 3, set
your affections. If you be risen with Christ,
Seek those things above where Christ sits on the right hand
of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things here.
You're dead. Next week, what's the date? This is the 10th. Two weeks, a little over two
weeks, I turn 70 years out. I know I don't look it, but this
boggles my mind. John says he's a youngster, but
doesn't it just boggle your mind? Barry's Nancy, it's your 80 some
years old. Don't you feel like you ought
to be eight, still be 18? I mean, these young people, I
got a whole life ahead of me. It's over. Reckon yourselves
dead. Go ahead. Bury yourself. Pick
out your coffin. I keep telling everybody. Pick
out your coffin. Tell me what hymns you want sung.
Not that it'll matter to you. This corruption puts on incorruption. Does that appeal to you? This
mortality put on immortality. Living in this world of pain
and sorrow and sin, go to a world wherein dwelleth righteousness,
where Christ is, where God is, the people of God, where they're
going to be doing what we're doing now forever. Does that
appeal to you? The world, that's the last thing
the world wants. Obviously, they're not here to
hear this. If we had a big band and music, entertainment, and
brought in the stars from everywhere, you know, we'd draw in a crowd.
Because they're of the world, and they speak of the world,
and that's what the world wants to hear. We speak of one thing. Jesus
Christ. And His Kingdom. How about you? That which is born of God. Overcomes
the world. And calls. And communes. and continues. If you think I
can't live without Christ, I can't live without the gospel, then
you won't. You're going to live forever.
You're never going to be without Him. Because God gets all the
glory. All right, stand with me.
