In this sermon titled "Walking With God," Paul Mahan explores the theological significance of Enoch's life as a model for believers today. The main topic addressed is what it means to "walk with God," emphasizing that Enoch, despite being a sinful man, was chosen and elected by God to live in close fellowship with Him. Mahan supports his arguments by referencing Genesis 5:21-24 and the surrounding context that portrays the corrupt world in which Enoch lived, paralleling it with contemporary societal issues. Furthermore, he draws from other Scriptures including Psalm 14 and Romans 3 to illustrate the doctrine of total depravity, highlighting that no one can seek God unless they are called by Him. The sermon culminates in the practical significance that those who walk with God live in agreement with His Word, leading to the ultimate assurance of eternal life, as demonstrated by Enoch's translation to heaven.

This morning we will be looking
at the book of Genesis, chapter 5. Genesis, chapter 5, and the
subject is Enoch walked with God, or walking with God. Now, read with me in Genesis,
chapter 5, verses 21 through 24. And I read, And Enoch lived sixty
and five years, and begat Methuselah. And Enoch walked with God after
he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters. And all the days of Enoch were
three hundred sixty-five years. And Enoch walked with God, and
he was not, for God took him. Now, this is not a message to
come commend the man named Enoch, but this is a message to tell
you what it means to walk with God. And we're going to use Enoch
as our example. All right. Now, there are four
points to this message. We're going to look at the man
Enoch. We're going to look at the world
in which he lived or the age We're going to look at what it
means to walk with God, and we're going to look at the end of,
or the future of, the man Enoch, or those who walk with God. Now,
the first point, the man Enoch. Now, he was just a man. Very
simply, he was just a man. He walked with God, but he was
just a man, not a superman. Scripture says, "...that which
is flesh is flesh. Such as is the earthy, such are
they that are earthy." He was not a superman. He was just a man. And since
He was just a man, that means He was a sinful man. Yes, a sinful
man. All the sons of Adam are born
sinners. Scripture clearly tells us, Psalm
14, Romans 3, there is none righteous, no, not one. All have sinned
and come short of the glory of God. So Enoch was just a man
and a sinful man. Enoch was a man with a home,
with family, with a job, perhaps two jobs, many responsibilities. It says he begat sons and daughters
for 300 years, so he had literally hundreds of descendants, children,
grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, and so forth. So he
had many responsibilities. He was a man with a home and
a family and much to do. And so that made him just like
you and me. Next, Enoch was a chosen man. The fact that he walked with
God means that God chose him. God elected him. God blessed
him. The Scripture says, Psalm 65,
it says, Blessed is the man whom thou choosest and causes to approach
unto thee. No human being will seek God,
will walk with God, unless God chooses that person to do so. was obviously loved by God, chosen
by God, called by God, justified and glorified by God, as all
who walk with God are. Or else he would not have walked
with God. It says he was 65 years old when
he began walking with God. So he was an older man. And you
can't teach an old man anything. You can't teach an old person
anything, especially religion. God does. And He chose Enoch
when he was an older man. Alright? The age in which Enoch
lived. The world in which Enoch lived. Now, Enoch was taken, translated,
just 60 years before Noah was born. And the day in which he
lived was a corrupt and violent and wicked age. Look at chapter
6 if you are following along. Chapter 6, verse 5, it says concerning
the world in which Enoch lived, God saw that the wickedness of
man was great in the earth. Every imagination of the thoughts
of his heart was only evil continually, or every day. Verse 11 and 12
says the earth was corrupt before God. The earth was filled with
violence. God looked upon the earth, and
behold, it was corrupt. All flesh had corrupted his way
upon the earth. So the day in which Enoch lived
was a corrupt and violent and wicked age. Does that sound familiar? It sounds just like today, doesn't
it? And the day was a day of vain
and super men and women. Look at verses 2 through 4 in
chapter 6. It says, the sons of God saw
the daughters of men. They were fair. They were very
beautiful. In verse 4, there were giants
in the earth, mighty men of old, men of renown. So in other words,
there were huge men and beautiful women. Does that sound familiar? It was a materialistic world.
Our Lord said in Matthew 24, as in the days of Noah, they
were eating, drinking, marrying, giving and marrying. The Lord
described the very last of the last days in which Christ will
return, and He said it will be as in the days of Noah when they
were eating and drinking and marrying and giving in marriage,
which describes a day of prosperity. Scripture doesn't say there are
going to be any worldwide dearth or calamity immediately preceding
our Lord's return. No, it will be a day of much
prosperity and a day when you think not. And that's a day when
everyone is in pretty good shape. So that described the day that
Enoch lived in, but Enoch walked with God in the face of a wicked
and violent and godless world, in the face of a A world full
of vanity and pride. But Enoch walked with God. All
right, what does it mean to walk with God? Let's look at Enoch's
walk. Enoch walked with God. Not God walking with Enoch. Oh, no. When you walk with someone,
that means you are following their lead. You are going in
the direction that they are going. Enoch walked with God, not vice
versa. If I walk with you and you know
where you're going and I don't, then I'm walking with you. You're
doing the leading. You're preceding me. I'm not
taking the lead. So it was with Enoch. He walked
with God, God's way in the direction of God, which means many things. And we're going to look at these
things in a moment. If you want to open your Bibles
to Amos chapter 3, the little small prophet Amos chapter 3
tells us very plainly the first thing of what it means to walk
with God. Amos chapter 3 in verse 3, Amos
3 verse 3 says this, Can two walk together except they be
agreed? can too walk together except
they be agreed." Now, it is so with you and I. We do not walk
with or make our companions those who disagree with us. We all
know we walk with and commune with and have companionship and
fellowship with those who agree with us and those we agree with. Well, can two walk together except
they be agreed? Well, it says Enoch walked with
God. So, Enoch agreed with God. Enoch agreed with God. Enoch agreed with all that God
said about himself, all that God said about God, about God's
person and his work. This is what David said, who
was a man after God's own heart. David, who walked with God also,
as do all of God's people. But David said this in Psalm
119, verse 128, I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things
to be right, and therefore I hate every false way. In other words,
David said, everything my God says is right and everything
man says is a lie. And I hate everything that is
contrary to what God says. And this is true of every believer.
He believes and loves God's word and despises and refutes and
denies everything contrary to it. And so Enoch walked with
God. Enoch agreed with what God said
of himself. And God says so much of himself
throughout his word. And most of it, yea, all of it
is contrary to what man says about God. God says of himself
in Deuteronomy 32, now see now, he says, see now that I am God
and there is none else. I am he. I am God. There is no God with me. No one
else rules. Satan doesn't rule. Man doesn't
rule. God alone has the free will. God alone decides and wills and
purposes what will be done. Not Satan, not man. He says in
Deuteronomy 32, 39, of himself, he says, I kill and I make alive. If anybody dies, God killed him. I wound, he says, and I heal.
Anyone gets sick, God is the first cause. Neither is there
any that can deliver out of my hand. I lift up my hand to heaven
and say, I live forever. In so many passages of Scripture
throughout God's Word that man, ignorant man, does not know concerning
the God of the Bible, he says in Isaiah 45, verse Five, I am
the Lord, there is none else, there is no God with me. He says,
I form the light, create darkness, I make peace, create evil, I
the Lord do all these things. So whatever God says about himself,
the one who walks with God agrees with God. And whatever God says
about man, The one who walks with God agrees
with God what He says of man. In Psalm 14, it says, the Lord
looked down from heaven to see if there were any that did understand,
if there were any that did seek after God. He says, they are
all gone aside. They all together become filthy,
the none that doeth good. No, not one. God doesn't say
anything good about man, but He says that man is no good,
that man is not righteous, that man is evil. What God says about
me, what God says about man, the one who walks with God agrees
with God. What God says about salvation,
and all that God does, Enoch agrees with. All that God says
about himself and all that God does, Enoch agreed with. Abraham
said, Shall not the judge of the earth do right? Yes. And
Enoch walked with God by faith in Christ. Yes, Enoch believed
Christ. Faith cometh by hearing, hearing
by the word of God. And so Enoch heard the gospel
of Christ. There's one Lord, one faith,
one way of salvation by grace, so you say, through faith. That's
not of yourself. It's a gift of God. Enoch heard
the gospel of Christ from Adam. Yes, Enoch left this earth before
Adam did, and Adam told Enoch about the Christ, the woman seed
who would come. Adam told Enoch without blood
there is no remission of sin, without the shedding of blood,
that it is the Christ who would come to establish a righteousness
imputed to his people and shed his blood or pay the penalty
of their sins. The soul that sinned must surely
die. Enoch walked opposite of the world. The whole world lieth
in wickedness, John said, but we are of God. Enoch walked according
to God's word, that is, according to his command, his paths. Enoch walked with God. And Enoch's
end, lastly, Enoch's end, it says in verse 24, God took him.
One day Enoch was walking to work, or the store, or the field,
or whatever, and the heavens opened and he walked right into
glory. And so shall it be with all of God's people who agree
with him, who agree with what God says of himself, what God
says about us, what God says of Christ, who walk by faith
in Christ, and which is opposite of this world. God will cause you to walk with
Him. Until next Sunday. Amen.
