If you from sin are longing to be free, Look to the Lamb of God. He to redeem you died on Calvary. Look to the Lamb of God. Look to the Lamb of God. Look to the Lamb of God. For He alone is able to save you, look to the Lamb of God.
When Satan tempts and doubts and fears you still, look to the Lamb of God. You in His strength shall over all prevail. Look to the Lamb of God. Look to the Lamb of God. Look to the Lamb of God. For He alone is able to save you. Look to the Lamb of God.
Are you a weary? Does the way seem long? Look to the Lamb of God. His love will cheer and fill your heart with song. Look to the Lamb of God. Look to the Lamb of God, look to the Lamb of God For He alone is able to save you, look to the Lamb of God
Fear not when shadows on your pathway fall, Look to the Lamb of God. In joy or sorrow, Christ is all in all, Look to the Lamb of God. Look to the Lamb of God. Look to the Lamb of God. For He alone is able to save you. Look to the Lamb of God.
Be seated, we'll sing hymn number 37. Hymn number 37.
Oh Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder Consider all the worlds thy hands have made I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder Thy power throughout the universe displayed.
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee, How great Thou art! How great Thou art! Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
Wind through the woods and forest glades I wander And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee How great Thou art, how great Thou art Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee How great Thou art, how great Thou art
And when I think That God, His Son not sparing, Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in. That on the cross my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin. Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee, How great Thou art! How great Thou art! Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation, And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart. Then I shall bow in humble adoration, And there proclaim, My God, how great Thou art! Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee, How great Thou art! How great Thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Galatians chapter 2. I'm going to start at verse 1 and go down to verse 12. I'm just going to deal with one verse tonight, God willing. Oh foolish Galatians. who hath bewitched you, that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth crucified above you.
This only would I learn of you, received you the Spirit by the works of the law or by the hearing of faith. Are you so foolish, having begun in the Spirit, are you now made perfect by the flesh? Have you suffered so many things in vain, If it yet be in vain, he therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, does he do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness, knowing therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. and the scriptures foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. For as many as are of the works of the law are written, or under the curse of the law it is written, Cursed is everyone that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it's evident, clear for us to see. For the just shall live by faith, and the law is not of faith. The man that doeth them shall live in them.
Our Lord and our God, and our blessed Savior, our Lord Jesus Christ. How blessed we are, what a blessed people we are, that you set us apart by the gospel. You crossed our paths with the gospel of the grace of God one day. You came and sent a preacher, and he told us the truth, and you used the truth to open our hearts to open our understanding, to give us a new nature, to give us a new heart, to take the darkness out of our understanding and turn on the light that's only seen in the Lord Jesus Christ. And Lord, we thank you that we're like those shepherds. We can say that this is what the Lord hath made known unto us, and it is even, as he said, And, Lord, is this like you said? What you've done for us is such a miracle, such a blessed work of grace, such a thing that gives you all the glory and all the praise and all the honor. There is nothing that we can say or do to make ourselves acceptable. But, Lord Jesus, we bless you that you make us acceptable. And, God, you make us acceptable in the beloved
Bless our time together this evening. Enable me to speak. Enable the saints to hear. Forgive us of everything that's unlike Him. Please be mindful of the brothers and sisters who are not with us, who have heartaches and troubles, who have trials and burdens. And so, Lord, you know who we're praying for. You know who they are. And we pray for dear, dear brothers and sisters in this congregation. who would be here had not it been the providential of God that kept them from coming. And we bless you and praise you in Christ's name, amen.
Item number 299.
299
Day by day and with each passing moment
Strength I find to meet my trials here
Trusting in my Father's wise bestowment,
I've no cause for worry or for fear.
He whose heart is kind beyond all measure,
Gives unto each day what he deems best.
Lovingly it's part of pain and pleasure,
Mingling tall with peace and rest.
Every day the Lord himself is near me,
With a special mercy for each child.
All my cares he feigned would bear and cheer me,
He whose name is counselor and power,
The protection of his child and treasure,
Is a charge that on himself he laid,
As thy days thy strength shall be in measure,
This a pledge to me he made.
Help me then in every tribulation,
So to trust Thy promises, O Lord,
That I lose not faith's sweet consolation,
Given me within Thy holy Word.
Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting
Here to take, as from a father's hand,
One by one, the taste of homage fleeting,
Till I reach the promised land.
That's the way we take it, too. That's the way we take it, day by day. And whatever we need for that day, he's going to provide it for us that day, that day.
Back here in Galatians 3, excuse me, 2, I said, how did I get to 3 so quick? Here in Galatians 2, no, 3, it is chapter 3. I'll get it right here in a minute. But here in chapter three, he asked all these questions. He asked questions. And he asked these questions to show the people the difference between law and works and Christ and the gospel. And he talked first, he says, you know, why in the world ain't you obeying the truth? You know, people that know the truth, they obey the truth. And here's Caesar Judaizers come along and got these people's eyes off of Christ, and Paul said, I know Christ, I set Christ before you, and I preached Him as Christ and Him crucified.
And this only would I learn, and all the answers are in the question itself. Received you the Holy Spirit by the works of the law or by what you heard? What did the works do to you to bring the Spirit of God to you? And then, are you so foolish, having begun in the Spirit? You started in a spiritual way. You're born again by the Spirit of God. You're not carnal. You're saved by the grace of God. The Spirit of God gave you a new heart, a new nature.
And are you now going to turn around and use your flesh to make yourself better? And, oh, have you suffered so many things in vain? And all my, they suffered all back in those days, people suffered greatly for Christ, if it yet be in vain. And this is where I'm gonna deal with tonight. He therefore that ministry you the spirit and workers miracles among you, does he do it by the works of the law or by the hearing of faith? Works or faith? Law or grace? Law or Christ? And He's showing them how absurd, how absurd it is and the utter foolishness of seeking to be justified by anything that a person does.
I don't care what you call it, you can call it law, you can call it works, you can call it free will, you can call it Whatever you want to, keeping a Sabbath, having dietary laws, we'll call it whatever you want to. But what he's saying is that you want to be justified by what you're doing. You want God to justify you. And here's the difference between what God has taught us in the gospel and what people who want their labor to be justified when they get to the end of the way. We start out being justified. They want to be justified. They want to be righteous when they get to the end. We start out where they want us to end up at. Our starting place is righteousness and justification by Christ. We're not looking for something to happen in the future except for Christ to come get us. That's the only thing we're interested in, when Christ's going to come get us. When he comes with a shout of acclamation and take us home.
And that's what he's asking. Did you receive the Spirit? The Holy Spirit, and that's what he's talking about, by works, and he just keeps bringing them and bringing to him to the only conclusion that someone who has faith, that someone whom God has given faith to, the only conclusion they can come to is, the works of the law never done anything for me. Oh my.
And oh, let me ask, let me question it this way, ask the question this way. He that ministers to you the Spirit. Did he do it? By what his law works were doing? By his Sabbath keeping? His holy days? His Advental days? Of all the holy days that he had and holy weeks that he had? Oh my. And oh listen. Or did he do it by the hearing of faith? And if a man works miracles among you, does he do these miracles by the works of the law or by hearing or believe in the gospel?
Now, I've always tried to show what genuine faith is, true faith, compared to what Paul is saying these Galatians are doing. You know, and I'll tell you what, there's a distinguishing. There's a great distinguishing between the works of the law and the gospel. They do not mix, they do not mix. Faith cometh by hearing, hearing by the Word of God. And that's why Paul says, he therefore that ministers to you, there's someone that ministers to you, and he ministers you the Spirit. Who is he? It says there, he therefore that ministers to you the Spirit. Who is the he that he's talking about? Is he talking about himself? Am I the one that ministers the Spirit to you? Am I the one that done all these miracles among you? No, no, no. It's not Paul that he's talking about. He's not talking about himself. There ain't but one person in this whole universe that can give the Holy Spirit, and that's God Himself.
And He that ministers to you the Spirit, and God uses the Spirit And that's what he does, the Holy Spirit. That's what he comes to do. And he is the one that God sends to bring us to faith in Christ. He's not a preacher can bring a person to Christ. The law can't bring a person to Christ, but the Holy Spirit brings a person to Christ. And if there's any miracles done about anybody, it's the Holy Spirit that does that.
And oh, only God, you know, you all remember You know, when our Lord Jesus ascended, He said, you Altarion in Jerusalem, you stay right here until you be endued with the Spirit, the promise of the Spirit, the power of the Holy Spirit, the power of the gospel. And when the Holy Spirit fell on those apostles that day, they all began to speak with other tongues and everybody could understand what they were saying in different languages. But those men, that's when the Holy Ghost started falling on everybody. Everybody. And you know, before that, only a preacher here or a prophet there or somebody here would, you know, the Spirit come upon them while they done something. But now the Spirit of God's for all of us. We couldn't know Christ without the Spirit of God. We couldn't understand the Word without the Spirit of God.
And oh my, and the apostles, God gave them the Spirit, you know, they were able to gave them the power to give the Spirit of God to people. Let me show you something in Acts chapter 8. Look over here in Acts chapter 8. Two ways the apostles gave, did give the Spirit. In Acts chapter 8, look what it says here. First of all, they done it by preaching. They done it by preaching. Look in verse 14. Now when Peter, when the apostle Simon Peter heard, which were at Jerusalem, heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John. And when they were come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Ghost. For as yet he was fallen upon none of them, only they being baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. They laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. Now that's the way, and now people take that, and all this Pentecostal movement said, I'll lay hands on you, and that's how you'll get the Holy Spirit. Well, all you do is put empty hands on empty heads. That's all you be doing.
Now look over here in Acts chapter 19. Go over here in Acts chapter 19, in verse 2. Paul was coming through Ephesus, and he got there to the disciples in Ephesus. When he got there, finding certain disciples, he said unto them, Have you received the Holy Ghost since you believed? And they said unto him, We've not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto them what were you baptized? He said, Unto John's baptized. Then Paul Then said Paul, John barely baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him that is after him that is on Christ. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul laid hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them, and they spake with tongues and prophesied.
Now, that's how God used the apostles. And how did he use the apostles in those days? Nobody can do anything like that anymore. Those people, this was something new that was happening. Oh, by preaching in the Holy Spirit. Now, by preaching, you know how God does anything work now by how the Holy Spirit comes now? By preaching. By preaching. The Holy Spirit quickens dead sinners, and the Holy Spirit gives faith to those sinners. And oh my.
And even when they done that, they preached Christ. They told about Christ. And God had given, God had given the Galatians His Spirit and worked miracles among them. God did. He gave the Galatians His Spirit and God worked miracles among them. The apostles worked miracles among them. And oh my.
And how did these miracles happen? How would they work among them and by them? When God gave the Spirit through preaching of the Gospel, you know what happens? When the Word is effectual in the heart of a man or a woman, when God saves somebody, that Word becomes fruitful. Fruit comes out of it. It's effected in the hearts of the hearers, and God is the only one that can give faith. And hope and all grace can only give hope. Christ can only give hope. Christ can only give love. And the Holy Spirit can only bring joy. The Holy Spirit can only bring patience. And you know, this is a miracle. Only the Spirit of God can take a man and save him. And the greatest miracle that's ever happened to any one of us and any of us has ever seen in our life is God saving us. God saving me. Now, that's a miracle.
Everything about us resisted God. Everything about us resisted God. Our flesh did. Our mind did. Our traditions did. Our legalism did. Our self-righteousness did. Our works did. Everything, our cult, everything that we ever tried, we resisted. Well, how in the world did he overcome that resistance? by the Holy Spirit. And oh my, I know that when God opens a person's heart by the gospel, Lord, he gives that gospel, that spirit gives faith. Oh, what a blessed hope he brings. What love he puts in our heart. And oh, this is a miracle. And only here, only the spirit can do this.
Let me ask you, and that's what Paul's saying here, did the law bring faith to you? Did the law bring faith to you? Did the law work ever? Have you ever seen a Judaizer, a law keeper, ever perform a miracle? Did you ever see anybody that was going by the law and all of his ceremonies and all of his rituals and all of his washings and all of his Sabbath and all of his holy days and his Passover, have you ever seen anybody work a miracle by what they was doing? That's what Paul's asking. You ever seen a miracle? You ever seen one of them performing a miracle?
And oh, this is how God confirmed the gospel. Now, they're hearts by miracles. And miracles, look over here in Hebrews chapter 2 with me. Miracles were given to authenticate that Christ was who he said he was. Look in Hebrews chapter 2. Somebody out there in an automobile or something. You know, when God gives the Spirit, you know, this is how the gospel was confirmed to hearts, people's hearts, by miracles. And miracles were given to authenticate that Jesus Christ was the one sent from God, the only one Savior.
Look what he said here in verse 3, Hebrews chapter 2 and verse 3. How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? And it's a great salvation because it comes from a great God. It's a great salvation because it comes from a great Savior. It's a great salvation because it saves great sinners, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, the Lord Jesus Christ himself, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him. God also bearing them witness both with signs and wonders and with diverse miracles and gifts of the Holy Ghost according to his own will."
This is how we're going to know. That's how we're going to know. And I tell you what, let me show you another one. Look over in Acts chapter 4, how the Lord used the Holy Spirit, the things he done to bring people to Christ. Excuse me, Acts chapter 4. Acts chapter 4. You all know this story where Paul and Peter and them were going up to the temple and there's a lame man there. And I tell you what, they told that fellow, you know, we ain't got no money, but we'll got the Lord Jesus Christ, and that man was made sound and jumped up and down and praised the Lord.
And look what it said in verse 6. This is what they did when they found out what had happened. And Annas, the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as all were of the kindred, the high priests, were gathered together at Jerusalem. This is a great crowd of everybody that was anybody. Everybody that was anybody. And when they had set them in the middle of them, they're all around in a circle, set them in the middle of them, they ask him, by what power, by what name have you done this? That this man was lame and now he's leaping, now he's walking.
Then Peter, listen to this now, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them you rulers of the people and elders of Israel if we this day be examined of the good deed done to this impotent man by what means he is made whole now listen to this be it known unto you and to all the people of Israel by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth whom you crucified You crucified him. Well, God raised him from the dead and by him, this man stands here before you all by Christ, not by us, not by our power, by Christ. And you see, you know, you didn't, you was going to build a building, but you didn't want Christ to be the cornerstone. You want to have a foundation, but Christ, you didn't want him to be your foundation.
And then he concludes with this right here. Neither is there salvation in any other name. In any other, there's none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved. Now the law didn't have anything to do with that. That's why they called them guys in question. How did you do this? How'd you do this? Why's this man standing here whole? Why's he standing here whole? And oh, the gospel. Hall, as he preached the gospel, was proved to be real by the miracles of an apostle. They had so many miracles that they used, and God just done miracle after miracle after miracle by these people. And these were used of God to confirm their faith in Christ. These miracles and things that were done confirmed people's faith in Christ.
Without miracles, without faith, miracles are meaningless. They're powerless. You know, look in Matthew 13, 58. Matthew 13, 58. You know, without faith, miracles are meaningless. And I've said this before, that if somebody could go to a graveyard or go into a funeral home and somebody was laying in a casket dead, been dead for two or three days, and they had them in their casket, If anybody could go in there and had the power to raise that person out of that grave, or raise that person out of that casket, everybody would all, they'd get all excited, get all excited, but you know how long it would last? It's of the flesh. It would still not change anybody's heart or mind.
Miracles will not change a person's heart or mind. Only God can change a person's heart or mind. And he used those men to do miracles to prove that Jesus Christ is the one that did all the work in this world. Even through me, he said, if there's any miracle been done, God done it through me. God done it. And oh my.
But here in Acts, look in verse 58. And look what it says here. Look at verse 57 first. And they were offended in him. That means they stumbled at him. That means that they didn't like anything that he done. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honor, only in his own country and in his own house. And he did not many mighty works there because of what? Unbelief. Unbelief. Unbelief. Oh, my.
In fact, he uses some things to harden men's hearts. And that's what he asked here. He asked here. He asked these people here, have any workers of the law ever supplied the spirit? Anybody that's doing works, did they ever supply the spirit? And I'll tell you, faith, and that's what he goes down here to say, Verse 11, the just shall live by faith.
You know, faith has nothing to do with law. Without faith, it's impossible to please God. By faith, Noah prepared an ark to the saving of his house. By faith, Abraham went out not knowing where he was going. By faith, Sarah received strength to conceive a child, have a child in her old age. And the scriptures tells us these all died in faith. They died in faith, not in works of the law. They died in faith. They died in faith. And oh my, no, I thank God that it says here in verse 13, Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us. And I'm so grateful for that.
And, oh, the works of the law involves no gift from God. It don't need no spiritual sight. It don't need no spirit to give power. No, I tell you, anybody that depends upon their flesh as the strength of human nature is wasting their breath. They're wasting their breath. And I said, without faith, it's impossible to please God. That's what it says.
And faith, we all know faith is a gift that God gives to us. And what it amounts to is God giving us spiritual eyes to see spiritual things. It gives us hearts to believe God. It gives us faith to trust Christ. It gives us faith that we can preach Christ. It gives us faith, and this faith comes with the gospel. Faith comes with the gospel. And I tell you, that's why we press men to believe, to believe God, to believe Christ.
We got folks that come here on Sunday, and I'm so grateful for every one of them that come, but we got folks here that come, they've never yet believed, but they're coming here in the gospel. As long as they're here in the gospel, there's hope, a blessed hope, as long as a person's sitting, listen to the gospel, listen to the word of God. I remember one time a fella told me that he sat in a service week after week after week and counted the ceiling tiles. Counted the ceiling tiles in the church. He went, he sat in there and just counted, started counting ceiling tiles. Next week he'd do the same thing, next week he'd do the same. One day he was not counting and he was just sitting there around, you know, trying to figure out what he was going to do, do that, the service. He stopped and I spoke to him.
counted sealing tiles for 23 years. God saved him. He don't count sealing tiles anymore. He was a propagator of the gospel, helped to get the gospel out in men's hands. He wasn't a preacher, but he sure sent out a lot of things from other preachers.
And oh my, and that's why the gospel We want people to, oh, we want people to believe God, to believe Christ. And I'll tell you what, true faith obeys the truth of the gospel. You know, instead of being bewitched, we see Christ in him crucified. We see Christ as our substitute. Christ bearing our sins in his own body on the tree. Christ suffering God's vengeance and wrath in our place.
And true faith receives the Holy Spirit. They're not looking for anything in their flesh. They don't believe that they started by the Holy Ghost of God and have a new nature, a new heart, and then run over to the flesh and try to trust their flesh and make their flesh cause them to be better, to cause them to be more sanctified. No.
And I tell you, and when we suffer, it won't be in vain. Paul said, we die daily. We die daily. And I tell you what, true faith works. When true faith comes, it actually does a work. Oh, my. It believes. Faith believes, and it never stops believing. Faith and repentance. Faith and repentance are not isolated acts. Where God gives faith, that faith always works. It's working all the time.
How does it work? It works by love. Who does it love? It loves Christ. It loves the truth. It loves the gospel. They love one another. And oh my. And I tell you, true faith, people have true faith, and God-given faith, It believes that the greatest miracle ever worked in their life or in their home is for God to give them a new heart, a new mind, and a new soul. Christ did it. And they know that they did nothing to cause the Holy Spirit to come to them. We did, you know, you and I didn't do anything to get the Holy Spirit to come to us.
And that's why he says the hearing of faith, the hearing of faith is why we keep on coming to hear. You know why? Because you hear by faith. I read something the other day. Well, I better not try to repeat it because I'll mess it up. But I'll put it in a bulletin if I can think of it because I know what it is.
You know how many things that we believe we can't explain? How could an infant, like we reported last week, how can that infant be the Ancient of Days at the same time? How can Christ be in the flesh, and be God manifest in the flesh, and thy Godhead dwell in him bodily, and yet still be in heaven at the same time? How can God die, and not die. And what do we know about the Trinity? What do we know about the Trinity? I'm just glad that I believe. I just believe. What are you going to do? I believe. Stop if you can. Just stop if you can. Can you stop believing? Can't do it, can you? Can't do it. Once you start believing, you cannot not believe.
All right. Our Father, precious name of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for your great mercy and grace given us in Christ before the world ever began. And, Lord, we understand that all the works that we ever done before are just dead works. All the hopes we had before were dead hopes. And, Lord, you came, and you brought the gospel to us. All the works we did never produced anything in us or for us but condemnation and guilt and shame. But you brought the gospel to us, and we heard in faith You gave us ears to hear in faith. And, oh, Lord, we're so thankful, and we bless your holy name.
God bless our dear brothers and sisters as they go home this evening. Keep them and preserve them. Meet the needs of their home, meet the needs of their hearts. Sustain them day in and day out, hour in and hour out, as you have to do for all of us. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for meeting with us and having mercy on us. Amen and amen.
Thank you, Lord, for saving my soul. Thank you, Lord, for making me whole. Thank you, Lord, for giving to me Thy great salvation so rich and free.
See you Sunday, God willing.
