I'll finish up this morning in this evening this chapter That really reminds you no Wednesday
night service our conference our meeting starts Friday night
7 o'clock Cody Henson and Todd Nybert will be doing the preaching. And also remember Darrell Hardman,
those of you that know him, love him. He's in the hospital, he's
got, he's very sick, got septic. And so please remember him. And Debbie, talked to her, and
boy, you'd never know anything's wrong with her. She just had
the hip replaced, Pain's very tolerable, she's doing great.
She's doing absolutely great, which I'm very thankful for.
All right, let me start reading here then in verse 36, 35, excuse
me, down to verse 41. And Jesus answered and said, while
he taught in the temple, how say the scribes that Christ,
the son of David, is the son of David. For David himself said
by the Holy Ghost, the Lord said to my Lord, set thou on my right
hand till I make thine enemies thy footstool. David therefore
himself calleth him Lord. And whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him
gladly. And he said unto them in his
doctrine, beware of the scribes which love to go in long clothing. and love salutations in the marketplace,
and the chief seats in the synagogues and the uppermost rooms at feasts,
which devour winner's houses and for a pretense make long
prayers, these shall receive greater damnation." Our blessed, blessed God and
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is God over all, blessed
forevermore. And Lord, one day you will, you'll
come with that trumpet sounding, and you'll shout, and the dead
in Christ shall rise first. And we which are alive and remain
shall be caught up together with him to meet you in the air. And so shall we ever be with
you. Oh, Lord, what a blessed, blessed
hope we have. What a blessed future we have
in this. You don't have no future in this
world, but we have a future in the world to come. And we thank
you and bless you that you gave us this gracious hope, pure hope,
blessed hope. And Lord Jesus, we Thank you
for allowing us to be here today. Oh, what a blessing, what a privilege
to be able to come into your holy presence, speak to you,
and Lord, for you to hear us. And Lord, we thank you for the
service to this point in time. And we pray for our services
today that you'd be pleased to come into our services, come
down and visit us, come down in power, come down in grace,
come down in mercy, come down in salvation, and oh Lord, come
most of all to bring glory to yourself and your blessed son
through the preaching of the gospel. And Lord, we pray for
our dear brother, our dear brother Darrell. What a blessing he's
been for so many years. God bless him. Lord, let the
Let the doctors, if you'd be pleased to let him be healed
and get better and go home again, come worship with us again. And
Lord Jesus, we thank you for Debbie and what you've done for
her. And Lord, we throw ourselves on your mercies this morning.
I know it's impossible for me to preach, to do anything without
the Holy Ghost of God, without your presence. Lord, I'm shut
up to what I preach and what I believe, which is your sovereignty
and your sovereign will and your sovereign power and the gospel
only being made powerful by you. So Lord, forgive us of everything
that's unlike you. Please be merciful to us today. Save you people in this place
for Christ's sake. Amen. Let's stand together as we sing
the hymn of the day in the bulletin. Poor, weak, and worthless though
I am, Almighty friend. Jesus the Savior is his name. He freely loves and without end He ransomed me from hell with
his blood, and by his power my foes controlled. He found me wandering far from
God, and brought me to his chosen fold. Gives me always freely come And
promises whatever I ask But I am straight and cold and dumb And
count my privilege a task But he cheers my heart not supplies
And says that I shall shortly be Enthroned with him above the
skies Oh, what a friend is Christ to me Be seated. Looking forward to our meeting
this next weekend. Get to sit and hear somebody
else. Get to hear somebody else. You
know, our Lord asked a question. And he said there in verse 35,
how say the scribes, Mark 12, 35, how say the scribes that
Christ is the son of David? How is he David's Lord and David's
son? The scribes, when our Lord talked
about the scribes, they were students of the law, great students
of the law. and they cared for all the jots
and all the tittles. They were expositors of the law
to the people, tried to tell them the meaning of it, but they
missed the meaning so many times, so many times. Our Lord even
told them here in this chapter already, you do err neither in
the Scriptures nor the power of God. You don't know them.
You don't know the Scriptures. You certainly don't know the
power of God. And that's one thing they always did. That's
why our Lord said, You have heard it said, but I say unto you. You've heard it said, but I say
unto you. And that's why our Lord asked
this question here. Why do the scribes mean when
they say that David is the son of God, that Christ is the son
of David? And all these men were men of
reputation. known for their wisdom, known
for their power, known for their honor, but the most of them,
and almost all of them, were enemies of our Lord and His gospel. They really were enemies of His
gospel. And here He had had a conversation with the Pharisees and the Herodians
about whether to pay taxes or not. Then He had a conversation
with them about whether your fellow who's going to be married
in the resurrection And then a fellow come and talk to him
about the law, and our Lord told him, he answered discreetly,
answered discreetly. And all they commanded, and our
Lord Jesus Christ, he commended that scribe there, back up here
in verse, verse, you know, 34, when he
had answered them about the law, what does the law say about the,
what's the greatest commandment of the law? And our Lord, love
God and love your neighbors yourself. And O mine, when I, when I, Lord
saw that he answered discreetly, he said, you're not far from
the kingdom of God. No man after that, ask him another
question. He never was asked another question
after this. And in less than 30, less than
48 hours, one day from now, one day from now, they're going to
have the Passover. And that night of the Passover,
Christ our Passover, He's gonna be apprehended. Now I said, you
know, in 24 hours, our Lord's gonna be apprehended in the Garden
of Gethsemane. And here He is still. He's absolutely
in control. That's what I'm trying to say.
Our Lord Jesus Christ, He's not fearing. He knows what He come
into this world to do. But He asked them this question.
He asked them this question. And that one said, Master, you've
well said when you talked about the commandments of the law.
And you know, when he talks about being well said, our Lord Jesus
Christ, He always says what's well, and He always DOES what's
well. He had the testimony of His of
his enemies even. Do you know that? Our Lord had
the testimony of his enemies. Look, well, I just mentioned
to you there how the scribes say the scribes, the Christ is
son of David. And then our Lord said, David
himself said, this David himself said. So he went from scribes
to David. David himself said by the Holy
Ghost, The LORD said to my LORD, Set thou on my right hand, till
I make thine enemies thy foes to. David therefore himself calleth
him LORD. How then is he son? How is he
son? If David calls Christ the LORD,
David's Lord, how can he be his son? How can he be his God, and
how can he be his Lord, and how can he be his son at the same
time? That's a good question, ain't it? And you know the only
way you can answer that? It's from the scriptures! You
can't answer it any other way. But you know that scribe said
up there, Lord, you said the truth, you have well, well said.
You know our Lord Jesus Christ, He said well concerning the law.
That's what that Pharisee said. That's what that scribe said.
You said, well, let me show you what some of our enemies, even
our Lord's enemies had to say about Him. And look over in John
chapter seven with me. Look at John chapter seven, verse
45. John chapter seven, verse 45. You know, this is our Lord, even His enemies, You know, there was a division
because of him, and that's what they said there in verse 42 here
in John chapter 7, And hath not the scripture said, Christ cometh
of the seed of David out of the town of Bethlehem, where David
was? So there was a division among the people because of him.
And some of them would have taken him, but no man laid hands on
him. Then came the officers, and the chief priest, and the
Pharisees, three groups of people, three groups of people, chief
priests, the guys that's got all the authority,
all the power, the people that everybody looks to, and the Pharisees,
the separatists, and the elders, and they come to him, and they
say unto him, why have you not brought him? This is why they
didn't bring him. That's why the common people
heard him. You know why they didn't bring him? The officer's
answer, nobody ever talked like this man. I've never heard anybody
talk like him. I've never heard anybody speak
like he did. I've heard a lot of preachers,
he said. He said, I've been in a lot of service, I've been in
a lot of synagogues, heard a lot of Pharisees, heard a lot of
scribes, I've heard a lot of teachers of the law, I've heard
a lot of Bible reading, but I ain't never heard anybody talk like
him. Look what they said. Then answered
them, are you also deceived? Are you also deceived? Oh my. But they said, oh Lord, as nobody
spake like him. And oh my, our Lord Jesus Christ
not only said well and spoke well, but I want you to see that
he also did things. Go back over to our text now.
I want you to see that he did all things well. Now go back
over in our text in Mark, and look back over here in Mark
chapter seven. I want you to see this. You know how many places that
they don't even use Bibles when they go to services? You know why we carry our Bibles?
And you know why I turned to these places? You know good and
well I can tell you about them, but you need to see them for
yourself. Look what he said here in Mark 7, 37. And were beyond
measure astonished, saying, he hath done all things well. That girl sang a song, he hath
done all things well. We'll have him sing that one
night this week. And I tell you what, he hath
done all things well. He maketh the deaf to hear and
the dumb to speak. And he done both for me. done
both for me. So our Lord Jesus Christ and
back over here in our text and it says you know in verse 37
and the common people heard him gladly. Now the only people didn't
hear him gladly was the scribes, the Pharisees, the hypocrites,
the Herodians, all the people that was anybody that had any
authority, had any power had any say so in anything that went
on in those days, every one of them turned their heads down
on our Lord Jesus Christ. Every one of them turned their
heads down on Him. But the common people, people like us, nobody's
from nowhere. Did you hear what I said? Nobody's
from nowhere. And that's what we are, we really
are. You know, and folks hate to admit
that, but we are actually nobodies. The only thing that gives us
any worth at all in this world is our Lord Jesus Christ. The
only thing that makes us ANYTHING in this world is our Lord Jesus
Christ SEPARATING us unto Himself. electing us by His grace, CALLING
us by His grace, SAVING us by His grace, KEEPING us by His
grace, and ALWAYS doing for us what we cannot do for ourselves. And they were in AWE of His wisdom,
AWE of His authority, absolutely in AWE of it. They said, oh,
nobody ever spake like this. Nobody done the things that this
man could do. And then it says, you know, and
there in verse 34, back here in our text, he says, and after
that, nobody's gonna ask him another question. They'd come
and they'd been coming asking him questions. They asked him
all kinds of questions. Show us a sign. Who gave you this authority? Who do you think you are? Why
do you do that on the Sabbath day? Who you think you are to
forgive somebody's sins? Only God can do that. They were
constantly after our Lord Jesus Christ. But they didn't ask after
he had made fools out of all of them. They said, let's don't
ask him another question. He done made us look like idiots.
Let's don't ask another question. Now the difference between him
and his disciples is they asked questions to trap him and to
tempt him. They wanted to trap him in his
words to tempt him. And you know, there's a time,
let me just show you what they do. They brought a woman taken
in adultery. In John chapter eight, took a
woman taken in adultery. And they brought him to, you
know, the Lord was sitting preaching and teaching and they interrupted
him and brought this woman Now the difference is they brought
the woman, they hadn't said nothing about the man. They brought that
woman and they said, set her among her and said, now, Moses
said in the law. See, it won't go that long. Moses
said in that law, stone her, kill her. What do you say? They said, well,
if he says pick up a stone, go ahead and stone her, you caught
her. And if he don't do that, then he's against Moses' law.
But you know what he said? If any of you ain't got any sin,
if there's not a soul in this outfit that ain't got any sin,
you pick up the first rock. They start sneaking away, start
sneaking away. And I tell you, after he makes
fools out of them so long, they say, whatever you do, don't ask
him another question. Don't ask him another question.
Oh, my. But his disciples ask questions,
and you know why they ask questions? To learn. We ask questions to
learn. We want to learn. We ask the
scriptures questions to learn. And the enemies always tried
to trap him, trap him in his words. Wouldn't contend with
his wisdom and his authority and all his blessed doctrine.
I want you to see in Matthew chapter, keep Mark now and look
in Matthew 7, 28. Go over here in Matthew 7, 28. Look what they said about our
master. And we know these things. And it came to pass when Jesus
had ended these sayings, listen to this, the people were astonished
at his doctrine. I'm still astonished at his doctrine. I love his doctrine. You know, if a man wants to know
whether my doctrine's mine or his has sent me, and if he knoweth
the doctrine of mine, said he that knoweth God knoweth the
doctrine that I teach, the doctrine that I have. And look what he
said, they were astonished at his doctrine. Here's what made
a difference. For he taught them as one having
authority and not as the scribes, not as the scribes. Oh my, all
right, let's go back over here. I'm going to get into this thing,
just give me a minute here. He asked a serious question.
He said in verse 35, How say the scribes? They're the fellows
that know the Bible. These are the theologians, the
theologians. They are the theologians, the
fellows you know that if they don't know it, nobody knows it.
How saith the scribes that Christ is David's son? Now, what a question. That's what the theologians taught.
And all, do you understand the scriptures, how Christ could
be the son of David and also, but at the same time, be Christ
Lord, huh? How do you understand the scriptures
that Christ is David's son? Look in Psalm 110, you need to
see this. Psalm 110, this is where our
Lord is talking about right here. our Lord is talking about. How can he, how can David be
Christ, David's son and then also be David's Lord? And that's
exactly what was said. Now look what it said. The Lord,
Jehovah God, God the Father, said unto my Lord, THE LORD JESUS
CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD, SIT THOU IN MY RIGHT HANDS, UNTIL I MAKE
THINE ENEMIES THY FOOTSTOOL." THAT'S OVER IN HEBREWS 2. THAT
ALSO TALKS ABOUT THAT IN HEBREWS 2. SIT THOU HERE UNTIL I MAKE
THY ENEMIES YOUR FOOTSTOOL. AND THAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN. AND
OH, LISTEN, THE LORD SHALL SEND HIS ROD. WHO'S THAT ROD GOING
TO BE OF THY STRENGTH OUT OF ZION? AND YOU'LL RULE And this
is talking about a king, now you will RULE in the midst of
thine enemies. And oh, here s what we re talking
about. Thy people, this is how He s
going to rule. How is He going to rule? In the
day of thy people, thy people, not EVERYBODY, not the free will
of man, not the decision makers, not the folks that want to be
good and do good and do all that possibly can to accept Jesus
and give their heart to Jesus. Look what He said, Thy people
shall be willing in the day of thy power. Why? Because we see the beauties of
His holiness. Oh, my, you know, He still got
the dew of youth on His mouth. He s always eternal and always
look the same. Oh, my. And then He goes on to
say, Not only is He the Son of David, but look what He says,
The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest
for ever after the Lord of Mechizedek. So He s not only a king, not
only the Lord, but He s got the power to save, and not only that,
but He s our High Priest! Has no beginning of days or ending
of days. Oh my. You know, David himself
saith, God said to the Messiah, my Lord, sit down after his ascension. Sit down after your ascension.
I'm gonna make you enemies of his footstool. If he be his son,
why does David call him Lord? You all remember the scripture.
When our Lord Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem, born in Bethlehem,
there were some shepherds out on the hillside, tending sheep.
And all of a sudden, a bunch of angels gathered together,
and they began to sing. Oh, could you imagine what a
choir that was? Them angels began to sing. And
they began to, the first word out of their mouth, Glory to
God in the highest! On earth peace has come down
to be with men. For unto you this day, TODAY,
is born unto you in the city of David, a Savior, a Savior,
who is Christ the Lord. Let me tell you something about
the Psalms. The Psalms are just not about David's feelings, not
about David's experiences. No, they're concerning the Lord
Jesus Christ. The first Psalm, the first Psalm
is about the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed is the man who saith
not in the seed of the scornful, but his delight is in the law
of the Lord. Huh? Ain't nobody, nobody that delights
in the Word of God like our Lord Jesus Christ did. And he never
sat in the seat of the scornful. And oh, he shall be like a tree
planted by the rivers of water, and whatsoever he doeth shall
prosper. And everybody thinks that us.
That's talking about the Lord Jesus Christ. So how can anything
I got ever prosper? Only because of Him. If He prospers,
I prosper. I prosper. Oh, and then it goes
on and I'll tell you something else. The second Psalm's about
Christ. Why did the heathen rage? Why
do people imagine vain things? I've set my king on my high and
holy hill. Huh? They said he's gonna laugh
at them in derision. He's gonna make fun of them.
He said they were heathen rage against my son, against my anointed. What do they think they're doing? And oh, how many, how many, how
many contain the gospel of Christ? You take Psalm 104, thy delight
to do thy will. Thy will, O Lord, I delight to
do. It's written of me, thy law I
keep within my heart. I delight to do it. And then
it talked about, talked about his suffering. Talked about his
suffering. You know, I, David, Psalm 122. My God, my God, why hast thou
forsaken me? Why? Why have you forsaken me? And then there's one that when
he's on the cross, it says they gave him vinegar. And he said,
it wasn't a friend that lifted up his heel against me. It wasn't
an enemy, but a friend that lifted up his heel against me. And all
his humiliation, They'll deliver him up to the, but they delivered
my darling to the dogs, he said. Boaz of Bashan considered against
me. Oh, I talked about his dying.
Oh, I talked about our Lord's dying. Everything about our Lord
is in the scriptures. It talked about, you know, that
he came down here. He that ascended, first he had
to come down. He had to come down. Oh, it talked
about he gave his back to the smiters, gave his jaws to them
that plucked off the beard. He was the song of the drunkards.
And then it talked about him rising again. Thou shalt not
leave thy soul in hell, nor suffer thine holy one to see corruption.
Death is not possible for death to hold him. And then talked
about him rising again. Oh my. Talked about him being a
preacher. He preached righteousness in
the great congregation. Talked about his second coming.
The Lord shall suddenly appear at his temple. Oh my, his second coming and
his reigning over all. Oh, the Psalms. You know, He
descended, our Lord Jesus Christ descended to suffer, to suffer
and bear the cross, to bear our sin on the cross, not just to
bear a cross, Not just the bearers, two other fellows. Crucifixion
was a common way of killing criminals in the day of our Lord Jesus,
a common thing for them to do. If a criminal done something,
they crucify him. It was a common thing. If a man does something wrong
and he kills somebody, murders somebody, done something to rob
somebody, they'd crucify him. And our Lord Jesus Christ, there
was two people, other people with him, but with crosses, they
were on crosses too. So what's the difference in the
death of Christ and his cross and those other men on the crosses?
Those other men wasn't bearing sin. Those other men wasn't God
manifesting the flesh. Those other men weren't saviors.
Those other men could not put away sin. Those other men wasn
t one who could actually bear the wrath of God and the judgment
of God and bear it away for all His people. Oh, my! And He s going to descend again
and reveal Himself as King of kings and Lord of lords. You
know, in both kingdoms, there's a kingdom of grace. I showed
you there in Psalm 110, verse three, thy people shall be willing
in the day of your power. Now look in Psalm 24, look in
Psalm 24. Now listen to this. Kingdom of grace in the day of
His power. Here's the kingdom of glory.
It says in verse 3, Who shall ascend in the hill of the Lord?
Or who shall stand in His holy place? Who can go all the way
up into the presence of God? Who can stand in God's holy place?
They said, He that hath clean hands and a pure heart. who hath not lifted up his soul
unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. Well, that sure ain't me, you. He shall receive the blessing
from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
Now who's that talking about? It ain't me. Who can say he's
made his heart clean and is pure from sin? The scripture says.
There's not a just man on the earth that doeth good and sinneth
not. So I tell you, the only person
that can do that is the Lord Jesus Christ. And you know why
he ascended up there? He went up there with those clean
hands. That means that I've got clean hands. He stands for me. I've got a pure heart. I haven't
sworn deceitfully. You know why? Because it's all
in Christ, I'm telling you. And what he has, we have. What
he did, we did. And now look what he says now,
talking about his coming glory. He said down there in verse seven,
lift up your heads. Oh, you gates. Oh, gates, lift
up your heads. Be lifted up, you everlasting
doors. What's an everlasting door? How
can there be a door that's everlasting? Huh? We're changing doors all
the time. Gotta go buy a new door, you
know, kick a dole in the doors, hinges come off them, gotta put
a new door. He said, this is an everlasting door. Open up
everlasting doors. And look what it says, and the
king of glory shall come in. Oh, who is this king of glory,
he asked? The Lord, the Lord strong, mighty,
the Lord strong in battle, mighty in battle. Lift up your heads,
O ye gates, even lift them up, ye everlasting doors, and the
King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the
King of glory. Oh my. Okay, so we go back over in our
text. How is He David's son? I showed you, I showed you that
He's Lord, He's God, He's King. But how is he David's son? How
will you answer this seeming contradiction? Thank God, I believe
we can. As Christ, God was David's Lord,
but Christ as man was David's son, was David's son. Now, I can show you that, I can
show you that. You read Isaiah 11. Let me say
something about that. I won't read it to you today,
but you go home and you read Isaiah 11. That's a pre-millennial
stronghold. Isaiah 11, all supposed to be
in the millennial kingdom. Well, that pertains to the gospel
right now, what God does for us in the gospel. But look in
Jeremiah 23. Look in Jeremiah 23. Talking about our Savior, Christ. Christ as man was David's son. That's what the Gospel said,
He is made of the seed of David according to the flesh, according
to the flesh. But look what He said here now
in verse 5, Jeremiah 23, 5. Behold, the days come, saith
the Lord, that I'll raise unto David, I'll raise unto David. Did you see that? I will raise unto David a righteous
branch. You see how that's capitalized? I'm the branch,
you're the vines. Without me, you can do nothing.
And a king shall reign and prosper and shall execute judgment and
justice in the earth. And in his days, in this righteous
breast days, and that righteous, and he is righteous, his Judah
shall be saved, Israel shall kneel safely, and this is his
name, what we gonna call him? The Lord our righteousness, huh? Oh my, now do you all know where
Zechariah's at? Malachi. is the first book before
Matthew, and Zechariah is right before Malachi. Now you look
in Zechariah chapter three. Zechariah chapter three. Look what it says here, talking
about David's son, David's son. Look in verse eight. Hear now, O Joshua, the high
priest, thou and thy fellows that sit before thee, for they
are men wondered at, for behold, I will bring forth my servant,
the branch." Who is that branch? David's son. Now look in chapter
6 with me, look in verse 12. and speak unto him, saying, Thus
speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man, behold the man,
David's son, whose name is the branch, and he shall grow up
out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD."
What's the temple of the Lord? We are, we are the Lord's people. Even He shall build the temple
of the Lord, and He shall bear the glory of it, and sit and
rule upon His throne, and he shall be a priest upon
his throne, the counsel shall be before him. You know, by our
Lord's human nature, he was the offspring of David, made of the
seed of David. But now listen to what I'm gonna
tell you. By his divine nature, his God nature, he was the root
of David. What does that mean? That he
was the one that gave David his life, gave David his throne,
gave David his throne. All right, so David got his life
from Christ. David was the son of, our Lord's
the son of David after the flesh. All right, now let's go back
over here. Our Lord gives us some warnings. He gives us some
warnings. Oh my, He gives us some warning.
Common people heard Him gladly. Oh boy, I just, and He said unto
them in His doctrine, said unto them in his doctrine, beware, beware, beware. They scared, that's why he said
you be afraid here, you beware here, you be afraid here. And
what are you supposed to be aware of? Scribes, the ones that said
he's the son of David, the scribes. He said, Take heed of being like
the scribes. Take heed of being drawn into
sin by them. Of learning, beware of learning
of their way. Beware of learning of such of
a spirit of hypocrisy, being like them. Be like anybody, but
don't be like them is what our Lord said. Oh my. And then He
said, Beware of their ambition. Look what it says, Beware of
the scribes, and here s what they do, which LOVE to go. Beware
of their ambition. Beware of the scribes which love
to go in long clothing, love salutations in the marketplace.
Oh, they walk in long robes. They wanted everybody to pay
attention to them. Oh, listen, and their robes, I mean, these
wasn't, they was the best clothes. I mean, they was something. They
was really, really something. And they'd get them beautiful
long robes and put them on, and I tell you what, and they'd go
out there and they'd put on those clothes, and listen to what it
says there. Hey, good to see you. How you doing, preacher? How you doing, reverend? You lookin' good today. I like
that outfit you got on. I heard you preached last week,
that's good. Oh, listen, they love to be recognized. They love, oh, listen, how many
times do you hear people say, do you know who I am? Well, if
you don't know, I don't know. I'll tell you what, I don't know
about the rest of them, but I know who I am. I'm big zeros without
Christ, I'll tell you that. And oh my, I'll tell you what,
they're proud. They walk in their long, long
robes. Oh my. And they're proud and
they're haughty. Proud, pride, pride, God said
pride. He hates the proud look. And
they're hearty. Oh, they've got that stiff neck,
got that head up. Oh, they're bigger and better
and brighter than anybody else. Bolder and bigger and better
and brighter. And I'm telling you what, they're
really somebody. And they love for men to recognize
them. Recognize them. You ever been
around somebody and they see you and they start looking for
some place to go, you know, so they won't be recognized? Oh, my. If I ever see you out,
I guarantee you I'll recognize you and I'll come up and say
something to you, come up and hug you. Walmart, Lowe's, I don't
care where you're at, I'll come up to you, hug you. Boy, it really
is good to see you. But oh, my, they love for men
to recognize them. Oh, my, love for men to recognize
them. And I tell you, there's a lot
of people out there that they love men to recognize them, love
men to recognize them. And our Lord says this. He said,
You'll receive another man in his own name. and you'll give
honor to another man in his own name, but you will not give honor
to God. You will not give glory to God.
Our Lord says, you know, said you, you garnish the, the, the,
the, the graves of the prophets. You make statues out of them
and you go and walk, walk in front of them and they recognize
them and talk about how great they are. And yet, your father's
killed. Oh, there's so many men that
this day and age, oh my. But I tell you what, they love
to be recognized. They love to be acknowledged.
And that's what I mean, beware of what they love. They love
salutations in the marketplace. Love salutations in the marketplace.
You know, I don't know how many of y'all know anything about
John Gill, but he had six commentaries. And he was, Spurgeon took over
where he preached at before he built the tabernacle. But when
you go through anything John Gill said, you know what he says
more than anything? Rabbi so-and-so said, Rabbi so-and-so said, Rabbi
so-and-so said, Rabbi so-and-so said, he wrote, and he said,
that rabbi said this, that rabbi said that, that rabbi said this.
He knows more about rabbis than they probably do. But what I'm
saying is that they love to be recognized. Love to be recognized. They loved greetings in the market.
Oh, my. Greetings in the marketplaces.
Look what he says there in verse 39. And I tell you what, they
loved to go to the chief seats in the synagogue. They loved
to go up there and sit behind the, sit up on the platform,
you know, with the big shots. They liked to go up there and
sit. Oh, look, look at all them folks.
Look how close they are to him. I'd like to go up on the platform
and be with, you know, to be recognized. And oh my, they love
to sit in the best seats, best seats where there you're supposed
to sit, in the uppermost rooms at the feast. Oh my, if there's
a feast anywhere, they got to be the big shot in it. But oh
my, look what happens now. And then they defy our widow's
houses. DEVOUR WIDOW'S HOUSES. THEY ARE
VERY COVETOUS. AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT WORD DEVOUR
MEANS? IT MEANS TO FORCIBLY, FORCIBLY TAKE OVER A WIDOW'S
PROPERTY. THAT'S WHAT IT MEANS. I WAS READING
SOMETHING THE OTHER DAY ABOUT HOW THESE TV PREACHERS AND THESE
BIG SHOT PREACHERS ARE BREAKING OLD PEOPLE BECAUSE GUARANTEEING
THEM HEAVEN, GUARANTEEING THEM SALVATION IF THEY WILL SEND THEM
SOME MONEY. And poor old men and women getting
old, they lose and they're desperate. If I can get into heaven by $100
a month, I'll do that. If that's all it took for us
to go to heaven, $100 a month, I'll give it. But all their covetous, they
go in there and devour with his houses. They say, Listen, listen,
you give us, and they end up taking over the widow's property,
taking over her property, taking over what belongs to her. Oh,
my, making long prayers. And oh, and I tell you what,
look what it says, and for a pretense, pretense. You know what pretense
is? Pretending. Pretending, pretense,
and they're in sorrow, making like they pity them, having a
great pious concern for them, with a pretense make long prayers. Oh, they have a great pious concern
for them. But oh my, turn your house over
to us. Oh my, we'll sell it and you
can give it to Jesus. Go live with your granny, go
live with your daughter, go live with your son. Let us have your
house, we'll sell it for Jesus. I'm going to give the money away.
Oh, my. And all they devourers had, and
they used their religion as a cloak of their crimes, for their crimes.
And look what our Lord said here. These shall receive greater damnation. You know, there are going to
be degrees in hell, there really will be. But it's still going
to be hell. Still going to be hell. You know
why they're going to receive greater condemnation? Because of who they were. Because
of who they were. Those common people, those common
people heard him gladly. And I hope I don't upset anybody,
I really don't, but I think per capita there'll be more preachers
in hell than anybody else. They're entertainers. They're doctors. They want recognition. You remember Larry Simpson. Larry
Simpson told me when he was a young preacher and graduated from seminary,
American Baptist Seminary out in Memphis, and I love Larry. Me and Larry talk all the time.
But I'm going to tell you his experience. He used to go soul
winning. They'd take a busload of people
to Chicago and go soul winning up and down the streets and win
people to the Lord. And then he got into a Big Southern
Baptist Church, and he said, we're always, always looking
for a bigger church. They taught you, always look
for a bigger church, for a bigger church, for a bigger church. Always looking for a bigger church. And boy, you come here on Wednesday
night or Sunday night and see how few they are here. But oh my, receive the greater
condemnation, greater damnation. You know our Lord pronounced
woe on the Pharisees and scribes eight times. Woe, woe, woe, woe,
woe, woe, woe. Called them vipers, called them
snakes. But let me tell you what, these fellas, they're gonna receive
the greater damnation. Let me close with this. Our Lord
changes not. Jesus Christ is the same today,
yesterday, and forever. And whatever else we do, whatever
else we do in religion, let us be true. Let us be true. Don't let us be a hypocrite.
Don't let us pretend. Don't let us pretend. God help,
don't let us pretend. Oh my. However feeble Our faith,
however feeble our hope, however feeble our love, however feeble
our obedience, God help us to see that they're real, that they're
genuine, and they're sincere. Oh my, the last thing I want
to do is come in here and pretend. Oh God, please. Paul said, Be
girded about with the truth. You know what'll keep us being
girded about with the truth. Oh, Lord God, our Savior. Father of heaven and earth, creator
and sustainer of this world, we come into your holy presence
to thank you and bless you for your great mercy. We're with
you. And the great love we're with you loved us. And thank
you for the abundant grace. And Lord, bless your people.
Bless your dear people. Bless those that are sick. Oh,
God, please restore them. Those that are frail, restore
them. Those that have troubles in their minds, restore them.
Have mercy on them. And Lord, meet with us this Friday
night, Saturday night, Sunday morning. God bless these preachers
when they come. Please use them for your glory
and our good. Bring glory to yourself. Forgive
me of everything that's so unlike you. For Christ's sake, I bless
you. Amen. He's the Savior of my soul. Jesus, my Jesus. He's the Savior of my soul. He's the Savior of my soul. Jesus. Jesus. Jesus. He's the Savior of my soul. He's the Savior of my soul. See you tonight, six o'clock,
God willing. I'm gonna deal with that with
as much, finish up that chapter.
