O bright heaven's sun ? Heart of my own heart, whatever befall
? Still be my vision, O ruler of all Love it. Romans chapter 4. Romans chapter 4. Read the first eight verses.
What shall we say then that Abraham our father as pertaining to the
flesh hath found? For if Abraham were justified
by works, he hath whereof to glory, but not before God. For what saith the scripture?
Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that worketh is the
reward, not reckoned of grace, but of debt. but to him that
worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly,
his faith is counted for righteousness. Even as David also describes
the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness
without works, saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are
forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to
whom the Lord will not impute sin. Our blessed Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ, we're so thankful, always thankful
for your great mercies for the day. Every morning we get up,
your mercies are new, and your compassions, they never fail. And Lord, we're so blessed, so
blessed by you, day in and day out. Have our health, have our
minds, Have a desire to be here and a willingness to be here.
Sing the songs of Zion, call on your holy name, and then preach
from your word, teach from your word. Oh, Lord, what could anybody
else want in this world except to go be with you and spend eternity
with you to see you face to face someday? And Lord, we thank you
for those that's gathered out, and we especially pray for those
who are not here, who are providentially hindered, whose bodies are weak
or they're frail, or they're sick. But Lord, we have people
that have needs in this congregation. You know every family represented.
You know every need of every heart, of every soul that comes
to this place. And so Lord, we bring those before
you that has these great, great needs, that, Lord, you know who
they are, you know what they are, and you know how to deal
with them. You know what to do. Lord, you're
the judge of all the earth, and you must do right. And so, Father,
meet with us tonight. Have mercy upon our children,
on our grandchildren, on husbands and wives, sons and daughters.
Lord, without you, They have no hope. And Lord, without you
going to them and revealing yourself to them, revealing their sin
to them, Lord, they'll never ever know what it's like to be
a believer, to be accepted of Christ, to be accepted in the
beloved. Never know what it's like to
call on your holy name. Never know what it's like to
have the rest and joy and peace that there is in believing. Never
know what it's like to have that satisfaction of heart and soul
and peace of conscience and your conscience never asking for anything
more since it's had Christ to answer to it. God meet with us
tonight. Bring glory to yourself through
this service tonight for Christ's sake. Amen, amen. Hymn number 44. Number 44. And can it be that I should gain
An interest in the Savior's blood? Died He for me, who caused His
pain? For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing love, how can it be That
Thou, my God, shouldst die for me? Amazing love, how can it
be that thou, my God, shouldst die for me. He left his mother's throne above,
so free, so infinite, his grace emptied himself of all but love. And played for Adam's helpless
race. Amazing love, how can it be that
thou, my God, Amazing love, how can it be That
Thou, my God, shouldst die for me? No condemnation now I dread
I am my Lord's and He is mine Faith I'm in Him, my living Head
Enclosed in righteousness divine Amazing love, how can it be that
Thou art mine? Amazing love, how can it be That
thou, my God, shouldst die for me? Did you get everything, Houston,
get all your books? He's precious, he is so precious.
He is really precious. All right, I want to talk tonight
about Abraham's righteousness, Abraham's righteousness. And
the apostle from Romans 3.20 through verse 31, he's dealt
with four things, four prominent themes. One of them is that no
flesh should be justified by the law in the sight of God.
There is no law, and I don't care what law it is or Ten Commandments
or anything else, a man is not justified by the law in the sight
of God. But no flesh shall be justified
in God's sight by the deeds or doing of the law. The second
thing is that there's a righteousness of Christ APART FROM THE LAW
over here in verse 22. Look with me at it. You know
that the righteousness of Christ apart from law is upon all and
unto all them that believe. You know by faith of Jesus Christ
unto them that believe, upon all of them. And then there in
verse 21 is that this righteousness, the third thing is this righteousness
is WITNESSED They witnessed to it in the Law and the Prophets,
and that's what we're going to do tonight. We're going to look
in the Scriptures and find out the Old Testament, what it means
by the Law, witnessed by the Law and the Prophets. And the
fourth thing is that justification, justification by faith in Christ
excludes all boasting, all boasting, boasting is excluded. And it
includes all boasting and honors the law. How does it honor the
law? It understands, we understand
that we can't keep it. There's no way in the world we
could keep it. If you offend in one point, you're
guilty of all of it. And so there's no boasting, you
know, if you have some part in your salvation, you'll boast
about it, you'll brag about it. And Paul said, boasting's excluded. They said, well, HOW are you
going to exclude it? What's the principle that we're
not going to be able to boast on? Well, you know, the Jews
like to boast about, the Pharisees like to boast about their relationship
to Abraham. The righteous, they like to boast
about their prayers. They like to boast about, you
know, all their works. And Paul even said, after the
rise of the law, I was blameless. So they had plenty to boast about. And Paul says, you can't do it.
It's excluded by what principle? By works? No, but by the law,
by the principle of faith. by the principle of faith. So
now he turns to the Old Testament, you know, and you see how this
goes, he established the law. Yeah, we established the law. We understand that the law is
just, holy, and good. But we're carnal, we're sold
unto sin. So how in the world are we gonna
be made spiritual? By Christ, through faith in Christ. All right, so he turns to the
Old Testament. to prove and illustrate righteousness
by faith apart from works or apart from any human merit, and
he uses Abraham, and he s the father of ALL the faithful. You
know, we walk in the footsteps of our father Abraham, and you
know, he uses Abraham, the father of the faithful. Now, Abraham
was CENTURIES before Moses, CENTURIES before the law was ever given.
centuries before there was a tabernacle, centuries before there was a
priesthood, and he was declared righteous before circumcision
was ever instituted. And oh, the history of God s
chosen people! You know, it didn t begin at
Mount Sinai. That s not when Israel started
existing. God s elect started existing
in Abraham the person of Abraham, and God entered into a covenant
with him and his seed, and that covenant was a covenant of grace.
Covenant of grace. But now look what he says then.
You know, righteousness by faith. Righteousness is by faith. And
he uses Abraham to show us that it's always been that way. For
he was justified centuries, centuries before the law was given. Now
look what he says here in verse 1. Oh, faith is necessary. What shall we then say, then,
that Abraham, our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath
found? And what they're saying is, if God so blessed him, and if boasting
excluded, well, what about Abraham? That's the first thing they want
to run to. What about Abraham? What shall we say then about
Abraham, our father? Did he have an advantage? Did
he have any advantages? Was his righteousness by works?
Did he get his righteousness by a particular position that
he earned, a position that he held before God? And look what
it says, as pertaining to the flesh, as pertaining to the flesh. Now what did Abraham, how in
the world did he become the father of the faithful? And you know,
since boasting is excluded by the principle of faith, you know,
he says, you know, he goes on to say, pertaining to the flesh,
what hath he FOUND pertaining to the flesh? What has he found
concerning himself and what he was when he lived on this earth?
Oh my, Abraham, you know, it says, For if Abraham were justified,
verse two, if Abraham were justified by faith, he hath whereof to
glory. But what have we found? If Abraham were justified by
works, with nothing at all. We ain't found nothing at all.
There's no way he was justified. If he was justified by works,
now listen to this. If he were justified by works,
he'd have something to boast in. Boasting's excluded. And that's the way everybody
is. Everybody that thinks that they're gonna be justified by
what they do, or how they act, or what they think, or what church
they attend, or what Bible verses they, you know, how many Bible
verses they memorize, if anybody thinks they were justified by
their works, he would have something to boast in. But all since boasting's
excluded by the principle of faith, Abraham couldn't glory.
before God, and nobody else will either. You know, here s the
thing, here s the thing, there s going to be a lot of people,
lots and lots and lots of people that s going to face God, and
they re going to actually argue with Him. Look at all the things
that we ve done. We preached! We worked! We labored! We gave! But oh,
if Abraham had anything to glory in, I don't know what it would
be. But boy, he could not glory before God. What did he find? Nothing as pertains to the Lord,
nothing at all, nothing at all. And oh, look what he says here
in verse two. For if Abraham's faith, what saith the scripture?
What saith the scripture? If Abraham were justified by
works, he had glory before, but not before God. And then he says,
and Paul, this is one thing that he always said, but what does
the Bible say? What does the Bible say? And
that's what we're interested in. What does the Bible say?
Look with me over in Genesis chapter 15. In Genesis 15, this
is where this is talking about. This is the very place that they're
talking about. Genesis 15. You know, this is exactly where
he's talking about. Oh, my. You know, Abraham, but what says
the scripture? If Abraham is justified by faith,
you know, what does the scripture say? Huh? Abraham believed God and it was
counted unto him for righteousness. Now, listen to what it says here
about him. After these things, the LORD came to Abram in a vision,
and this is the first thing he said to him, Fear not, Abram,
I am your shield. I am your shield, nothing s going
to hurt you, and I m your exceeding great reward. And Abram said,
Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and
the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? And Abraham
said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed, and lo, one born
in my house is mine heir. Oh, listen now, this is where
the rubber hits the road. And behold, the word of the LORD
came unto him, saying, This, he s talking about Ishmael, shall
not be thine heir, but he that shall come forth out of thine
own bow shall be thine heir. Now, listen to what God does.
He brought him forth abroad, brought him out, sent him out
away from where he was at, and said, Look now toward the heaven,
And I'm sure that Abraham looked up and he stand there and the
Lord's in a vision showed him his thing. And tell the stars,
that word tell means count them, count the stars. If you be able
to number them. And he said unto him, so shall
thy seed be. Now you talking about a promise,
looking at the star said, he said, I ain't even got a child.
When are you gonna give me a child? I only got one hour and I'm not,
and he said, listen, Abraham, you're not gonna have, you're
gonna have some of your own seed. It's gonna come from your own
bowels. And then he looked at the stars and I'll tell you,
you look at the stars at night, he said, tell them, number them.
He said, that's how many children you're gonna have. And the scriptures
tells us in Revelations, there's a multitude that no man can number,
10,000 times 10,000 thousands. And what did Abraham do? He looked
at them stars, he hadn t even had a child yet, and he looked
at them stars and said, Well, God promised that. And look what
he said, And he BELIEVED, and he BELIEVED in the Lord,
and he counted it unto him for righteousness. Oh, Oh, my, Abraham! His righteousness
is by faith! Oh, my, listen to this! You know,
here s the thing, you know, God righteous by faith, and what
did Abraham, you know, He uses Abraham, He chose us here, Abraham,
and Abraham s faith is proved by the Scriptures. God made a
promise to Abraham. Abraham believed that promise!
and he believed the God who MADE the promise. It wasn t just the
promise, it s who MADE the promise. God is the promise in God, and
God said, Abraham, I promise you that you re going to have
that many children. You re going to have that many
children. And oh, my! And I tell you, he believed God,
and God by His faith counted him as a righteous man before
God Almighty and before the whole world. Now, no wonder the apostle
said, if God be for us, who can be against us? God be for us,
who can be against us? Now, listen to me. There's no
merit in trusting God. Did Abraham have any merit in
believing what God said? There's no merit in trusting
God. It was God's mercy, it was God's
grace that reckoned Abraham righteous through faith. Abraham believed
in the promising God. Go back over to Romans 4 with
me. Oh, Abraham believed in the promising
God, and the promises was as good as fulfilled because God
who made it. Look what he said here down in
verse 17 of Romans chapter 4, As it is written, that s what
God just told him, I have made thee a father of many nations
before him whom he believed, Even God, who quickens the dead,
and now listen to this, and calls those things which be not as
though they were. Abraham didn't have a child, but he said, that's
how many children you're gonna have. Count the stars, that's
how many you're gonna have. He didn't even have a son yet.
God said, he counted things to be that hadn't even been yet.
You know why? Because God makes a promise,
and that promise is good. He's just sure enough he's gonna
have that many children. going to have that many children.
Oh, my, that promise is as good as the one who fulfilled it and
who made it. And God chose to make a promise
to Abraham, and that shows us that it s of grace. I am, I am thy shield. I am thy exceeding
great reward. I am. And then, oh, get back
up there in verse 1, it says, What hath Abraham found? What
hath he found? Justification by faith, that's
what he found. Absolutely by faith. There's
absolutely no virtue in faith. Trust is man's answer to God's
truth. It's like Paul, you know, he
says, I know WHO I have believed, and I'm persuaded that whatsoever
I committed unto him, he's able to keep it against that day.
Oh, my! You know, trust is man's answer
to God's truth. You know, God is who we trust,
and it's His free grace that draws us out and upholds us and
our confidence in Him. Abram believed God, and God counted
him a righteous man, and the object of his faith was God and
His promises. Look down here in verse 20, Romans
4. Listen to this. Now, God took
him out there, and one time he took him out and said, count
the sand by the sea here. Count all that sand in this desert.
Count all them stars up there. And oh, look what happens now.
He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief. If God
had told me out there I was gonna have that many children, I would
have said, oh my, that's just impossible. That's just no way
that can happen. But he didn't do that. He never
staggered at the promise of God through unbelief, but look what
it says, strong in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully
persuaded. What persuaded Him? God's promise. But was strong and being fully
persuaded that what? Now listen to this, what He had
promised. Who promised? God promised. He is able to perform
it. If He said, I'm going to have
that many children, I'm going to have that many children. Huh? Oh, and he goes on to say this,
and therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. Oh,
my. Now, you know, that s exactly
what we do. We trusted God and the promise He made us. He said,
He that comes to me, I ll in no wise cast him out. He that
believeth on the Son, I ll be just, and I ll justify you. I
sent my son forth to be a sacrifice for sin. And if you know that
you got sin and God brings you to himself, you'll say, yes,
I believe God. God made a promise that if I
believed and come to him through Christ, I'd be saved man. I'd
be a saved man. And I'd be counted righteous
before God himself. And oh my. And I tell you, God's
the object of faith He's God and the promise He made. And
oh my, look in verse four and five with me now. Look here in
verse four and five. Look what He says here now. Now
to him that worketh is the reward, not reckoned of grace, but of
debt. Oh my, oh now. Now to him that works, But to
him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly,
his faith is counted for righteousness." Now, a lot of you all, you work,
you go to work, you're a laborer, and that's what he said, to him
that worketh is the reward, the payment. The laborer wants what
he earns. It don't say nothing about a
gift here. That fellow where you work all week, he's not giving
you a gift when he gives you your you've earned it, and that's
what he said. You earn it, it's not a gift,
it's not a favor, it's not mercy, it's not grace, and it can't
be called either. And I'll tell you what, it's
a debt, it's an obligation that's owed. If a man works, it's an
obligation that's owed. It's a debt, it's his wages.
If work is involved in any way, regardless of the degree of that
work, it's a debt, and not grace at all. If it's of grace, works
have nothing to do with it. If it's of works, it cannot possibly
be of grace. And he tells that, he said, you
fellas wanna be doing that? And oh my, but now look what
he says. He said, listen, it's a reward
gotta be paid, it's wages, you labored for it. And I tell you
what, God's gonna pay you just exactly what's owed you. There's
an old preacher years and years ago, I can t even think of his
name now, but he had a message called PAYDAY SOMEDAY, and that
message is WORLD FAMOUS! You know, I listened to it years
and years ago, but a PAYDAY SOMEDAY, and that means that God is going
to PAY OFF! You know, if you want WORKS and
you want WAGES, God will give them to you. You know what the
WAGES of sin is? DEATH! WAGES of WORKS? RAGES
OF RIGHTEOUSNESS BY THE LAW, DEATH. THE WORD IN THE WORLD
IS FAITH, LIFE, LIFE, AND OH MY, LOOK WHAT HE SAYS NOW, BUT
TO HIM THAT DOES NOT WORK, HE AIN'T WORKING, HE DON'T WANT
TO WORK, HE WANTS GRACE, HE WANTS MERCY, HE WANTS SALVATION, BUT
TO HIM THAT WORKETH NOT, AND LISTEN TO THIS, BUT BELIEVETH
ON HIM, that justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. You know, righteousness is received,
that s what he s talking about, you know, but him that works
not, the first thing that God teaches a man is you ve got to
be done with self, got to be done with self. Oh, and you ve
got to go away from all of his ALL THE HOPE OF BEING SAVED BY
ANYTHING THAT WE DO, AND WE HAVE TO SET IT ASIDE FOREVER, ONCE
AND FOR ALL. Oh, my! Paul said, My works and
my righteousness I count as bedung, I count as garbage. Why? To win
Christ, I want to know Christ. I want to know Christ. And the
right way of righteousness is this, Believe us on Him that
justifies the ungodly. justifies the ungodly. You know,
faith is simple, it's sufficient, and it's satisfying. We trust
the Lord. We trust the Lord. We cast ourselves
upon the Lord. We rest in His Word. That's why
He said, What saith the Scripture? Oh, no, just, you know, we trust
in His work and what He did. It's who did the work. We trust
in Christ who did the work. And HE FINISHED THE WORK! And
we sing that old hymn, part of a hymn, Oh, how sweet to trust
in Jesus! Oh, my! Just to take Him at His
Word! And I tell you, if God says it,
I mean, that's all that we need to know is what God says. And
oh, He says here, He justifies the ungodly. Now, what does it
mean here, justifies the ungodly? When people think about somebody
ungodly, they think about somebody that's just doing, living an
awful, awful, awful, awful life. Paul said, we were without God,
without hope, and without Christ in this world. You know what
ungodly is? It just means to be without God. Be without God. ungodly when
justified, but be it without any piety whatsoever, any righteousness
whatsoever, without God. You know how many ungodly preachers
there are preaching works, preaching everything but Christ and Him
crucified? telling folks that, you know,
you can be saved by coming to an all to be saved by a decision.
Jesus died for everybody, Christ died for everybody, and if you
just believe and accept Him, you know, talk, ask Him into
your heart, and they're ungodly! I remember that I was without
God one time and STILL preached, but oh, to be without God! God
justifies the ungodly! I was ungodly when I was lying
on God. I was ungodly when I trusted
my own works. I was ungodly when I was self-righteous. I was ungodly when I was a fundamentalist,
self-righteous. I was ungodly. You know what
that means? I didn't have nothing. I had
everything BUT God. I had religion. I had the Bible. I could quote verses, but I was
without God. Oh, my, and I tell you, He justifies,
I thank God He justifies the ungodly. The scripture says,
you know, in due time, Christ died for who? The ungodly. You ever been ungodly? I know you can't get it in your
mind that, you know, you can't get it in your mind when you
think of somebody ungodly, you're thinking about the awfulest sins
that anybody could possibly commit. Is there any other worse sin
than trusting in your own righteousness? Is there any other greater sin
than lying on God? Huh? Is there a greater sin than not
believing what God said about His Son, trying to bypass Christ? Is there a greater sin than those?
Huh? That's about as bad as you can
get. But oh, look what it says here in verse 5. But to him that
worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly,
his faith is counted for righteousness. Righteousness is received on
a man's account when he believes God. Over here he's got liabilities,
nothing but sin. And oh my, God takes that sin
off and he puts over here on this account takes away the sin,
he s righteous, keeps it account, he s righteous, and look what
he goes on to say. Faith is not equivalent to righteousness,
it s not. To reckon a man sin to be a man
is reckon him to be a sinner, and to reckon faith to a man
is reckon him to be a believer. And God reckoned Abraham as a
believer and justified him, justified You know the first thing that
had to happen when Abraham had to believe God? God had to REVEAL
HIMSELF! The first thing He said, I AM! I am thy shield, I am thy righteousness. And then He made a PROMISE to
him. Abraham said, Lord, I ain't got it. He took him out there,
showed him, showed him, showed him. He gave him a REVELATION! a revelation of a promise, a
revelation of salvation, a revelation of an INFINITE number of believers. And oh, God revealed Himself,
God showed Him how He was going to give Him children, and Abraham's
response, God RECKONED him a BELIEVER and justified him right then
and there. What amazing grace that God,
who is infinitely righteous, regards us as righteous as Christ
Himself. Our Lord, bless His name, fulfill
the law, and through faith His obedience becomes ours, His righteousness
becomes ours, and everything He is becomes ours. And then
look what happens to faith. Look at the outcome, look at
the outcome, the result of faith. And this is in Psalm 32, 1 and
2. He said, And his faith counts
for righteousness, even as David also describes the blessedness
of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without any words. Oh, blessed is the man! Oh, my,
and look what he says there in verse 7. Oh, how come of faith? Blessed is the man! How blessed
is that man! The blessedness that comes upon,
upon a man that in God imputes righteousness, and he has nothing
whatsoever to do with it. His fingerprints are not on it
nowhere. If your fingerprints is on it,
it ain t worth having, and look what he goes on to say. saying,
Blessed are those whose iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are
covered. God, who imputes righteousness
to without works, a man is truly, truly blessed, for whom God does
this. And look what he goes on to say,
Blessed is the man, and this is Psalm 32, word for word. Blessed is the man to whom the
Lord will not impute sin, not charge it on his account. The
imputation of righteousness necessarily means that sin has to be taken
away. You can't be righteous and have
sin at the same time. And God blesses the man whose
sins are gone, imputes righteousness without work. Oh, the blessedness
of sins forgiven, unrighteousness covered, sins not reckoned to
you. And oh, bless his name. When
he talks about this righteousness, he covers our past, covers our present, covers our
future. We're righteous before God and
with God because of grace, because of an act of grace. an act of
grace, being justified freely by his grace. You know, this
righteous as God comes by an act of grace, not of works. So
let me tell you something, works cannot affect this relationship. You say, boy, I've got a lot
of bad ones. I've had more bad works. You wouldn't believe how
bad I've been the last couple of days. I don't wanna tell you. You don't wanna know. Ill, mean,
hard, harsh, oh my. But oh, listen to this. Did those
being like that affect my relationship with God? It might affect my
relationship with you, but it ain't gonna affect my relationship
with God. Well, oh, what about my good works? They ain't gonna
have no effect either. Oh, my, oh, there's nothing can
affect this relationship in this justification that God gives.
God accounts us righteous on the basis of what Christ has
done. Jeremiah 23, 6 says this, Jehovah
sekidnu, the Lord our righteousness. Not hopes to be, like to be,
think to be, but the Lord our righteousness. Lord, we thank you for your mercies
tonight. Thank you for your word that
we can go to the scriptures and find out what you say. about how a man obtains righteousness. It's of grace. It's through faith. And oh Lord, you give the faith,
you give the grace, and then you justify us. Clear us of all
guilt. Clear us of all sin. Clear us
of all bad works, good works, every work. And you justify us
in your sight. Oh, if God be for us, who could
possibly be against us? Thank you for your word. And
Lord, if you're pleased to use it, I'd be ever grateful. And
if you don't use it, I'll still be grateful because it's your
word and you'll do with it what you will. Bring glory to yourself
through this little body of believers for Christ's sake. Amen. Amen. This saying, I think it's 30
in this little handbook, we'll sing a verse or two of this living
by faith, and then we'll be at liberty to go 30 in a little course book. No, it's okay. No. I care not
today what the morrow may bring If shadow or sunshine or rain
The Lord I know ruleth o'er everything And all of my worry is vain Living
by faith in Jesus above, trusting, confiding in His great love. Safe from all harm, in His sheltering
arm, I'm living by faith, and I feel no alarm. Let's do that third verse, and
that'll be the last one. I know that he safely will carry
me through, no matter what evils be tied. Why should I then care,
though the tempest would blow? if Jesus walks close to my side
living by faith in Jesus above trusting confide in his great
love. Safe from all harm, in his sheltering
arm, I'm living by faith, and I feel no alarm. See you Sunday, God willing. What are you doing? Hi, sweetie. Hi. Oh, you know what? I've got
some cheese. You know what? She got the bag.
