"Our Anchor of Hope"

Hebrews 6:13-20

In the sermon "Our Anchor of Hope," Don Bell explores the theological topic of hope as it relates to Christ being the anchor of the soul, as presented in Hebrews 6:13-20. Bell emphasizes that God's promises to Abraham, confirmed by His immutable oath, serve as a foundation for the hope believers possess through Jesus Christ. He argues that this hope is both "sure" and "steadfast," providing comfort amidst life's tempests, much like an anchor secures a ship during turbulent seas. Bell articulates how the inseparable connection between this hope and Christ's redemptive work fortifies believers against spiritual dangers, underscoring the importance of God's sovereignty, grace, and faithfulness. The practical significance rests in recognizing that Christ, as the anchor, holds believers firm in trials and temptations, ensuring their perseverance.

Key Quotes

“We have this hope as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast.”

“The anchor of the soul, our anchor of hope, holds us firm when the storms of life arise.”

“The anchor doesn't just help the vessel; it holds the vessel. Christ is our anchor, and we are held by Him.”

“His promises are immutably secured by His own oath, giving us strong consolation in tumultuous times.”

to who they're talking about, I reckon. Hebrews chapter 6. Hebrews chapter 6. I'm going to get my text out
of verse 19, which we hope we have as an anchor of the soul.
I want to talk about our anchor of hope, the anchor for our soul. Been trying to go through the
A's dealing with the Lord Jesus Christ and almost forgot this
one as an anchor. But let me start now here in
verse 13 and read down to the end of this chapter and comment
as I go. For when God made promise to
Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself. Now this happened on Mount Moriah
when he took his son Isaac upon the mountain. God stopped him
and said, I swear by my own name." Because he could swear by no
greater. And this is what he told him,
and he swore, this is what he swore to Abraham. Surely blessing
I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. And so
after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise, the
promise of a child. THE PROMISE OF A RESURRECTION,
THE PROMISE OF A MESSIAH, THE PROMISE OF A SAVIOR. FOR MEN
VERILY SWEAR BY THE GREATER. PEOPLE SAY, I SWEAR ON MY MAMA,
I SWEAR ON MY BABY'S EYES, AND THEY SWEAR BY SOMETHING GREATER
THAN THEMSELVES. AND MEN VERILY SWEAR BY THE GREATER,
AND THEN THEY MAKE A PROMISE, THEY MAKE AN OATH, AND THEY MAKE
AN OATH. They say, Take my word for it.
An oath is a confirmation to them, an end of all strife. You
swear, you make an oath, you give them your word, and then
everything ends. That just stops the matter right
there. We're in. We're in. God, willing more abundantly
to show unto the heirs of promise, same promise that He gave Abraham,
of a Savior, of a Redeemer, of a Messiah, of a Savior, of a
sacrifice, of a sin offering, of a Redeemer, God willing more
abundantly show unto the heirs of promise, that s us, we are
heirs of the promise, and listen to this, the immutability of
His counsel confirmed it by an oath, that by two immutable things,
in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong
consolation, not just a consolation, not just comfort, a strong comfort,
a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon
the hope set before us. WHICH HOPE WE HAVE AS AN ANCHOR
OF THE SOUL, BOTH SURE AND STEADFAST, AND WHICH ENTERETH INTO THAT
WITHIN THE VEIL, WHETHER THE FORERUNNER IS FOR US ENTERED,
JESUS, MADE AND HIGH PRIEST FOREVER, AFTER THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEK."
Now I want to talk about the anchor of the soul, our anchor
of hope, the anchor of hope. which hope we have as an anchor
of the soul. You know, there's been many,
many ships went over the seas since they've made ships. You
know, our Lord Jesus Christ taught out of a ship. He called four
of his disciples out of ships, out of work that they were doing,
and many, many ships have been lost at sea. One famous ship
that was lost at sea was the Titanic. It's impossible to sink
it on its maiden voyage. It sunk. It sunk. And they didn't
have time to even drop an anchor. And when we talk about the anchor
and the world that we live in, the world we live in is like
a raging sea. It's unstable. The world we live
in is unstable. It's dangerous. Great waves is
in this. David said one time, thy waves
roll over me, roll over me. And the lives of men in this
world is driven with the wind and tossed, the scriptures tell,
deals with the waves of the wind and the wind and tossed about.
And we're like ships out on this sea. The old timers called us
like little barks, little barks out on the sea. And we're like
ships on this sea, we're subjects to its changes. One day it can
be just as calm as it can be, the next day it could be white
caps and the wind just blowing and whipping waves. And then
its motions, we're subjects to its motions by the waves and
the way the motions do. And we're apt to be getting a
current be caught in a current, and driven in those currents,
and dragged about by those currents, driven by the winds, tossed about
by tempest as they come upon us in this world. But God in
His wonderful, blessed, blessed grace, He means not for the storms
to defeat us, not for the storms to overcome us, not for the currents
to carry us away, not for us to be carried about with every
wind, not for us to be overcome by the waves of this world. It
pleased Him to MAKE us an anchor, and He not only made us an anchor,
but it was an anchor for our souls. We don t need one for
the body, we need one for our souls. And He made us an anchor
for our souls, and it tells us here that He's made it both SURE,
SURE! It's like Cody preached the other
night, SURELY, and SURE! He's made this anchor SURE! And
not only has He made it SURE, but He's made it STEADFAST! STEADFAST! Oh, my! And because of this anchor,
we can ride out the storm! And what does an anchor do? What
does an anchor do? What was it DESIGNED to do? Well,
what it's designed to do is hold the vessel firmly to one place,
hold it down. When the winds come, it'll stay
there. When the currents come and move around it, it'll stay
there. When the waves come over it, it's going to stay there.
It can't be moved from where that anchor's at. And God in
His blessed mercy has given us some anchors for this life here.
He's given us some truths that's anchors. His sovereignty is an
anchor. His faithfulness is an anchor.
His mercy is an anchor. His grace is an anchor. And the
greatest anchor of all other than our Lord Jesus Christ is
His Word. He said, If I could swear by
no greater, I swore by myself. And then to confirm it, He made
an oath. Now, could you have any better
anchor than that? Than God Almighty and His sovereign
mercy and grace given us in Christ? Oh, what anchors we've got in
this life! What anchors we've got in this
life! And He gives us these truths, and He fixes these truths into
our minds, and they HOLD us. Perseverance is one of them.
And Bruce Crabtree used to use this saying all the time, ìPreserverance.î
Perseverance is somebody asking him one time said what do you
mean? It's only the persevere preserve He said we're we have
perseverance. We're preserved and we Persevere
at the same time and we persevere because we're preserved That's
a pretty good way of describing it ain't it? That's one of the
things that God God will not let us go He binds us to himself
with this anchor Oh my, oh listen, you talk about an anchor. The
righteousness of Christ? That we've got a righteousness
in the sight of God? That it's the righteousness of
God Himself? Oh my. And the anchor, let me
tell you something, the vessel don't hold on to the anchor,
the anchor holds the vessel. The anchor don't go out here,
you know, you go ahead and get on the anchor. No, the anchor
holds the vessel down. It holds it down. Keep it from
being wrecked. Keep it from being overturned.
That's why Paul said, summing having not kept the faith made
shipwreck of the faith. But having not held to faith,
not holding to the faithfulness of God and the faithfulness of
His Word, the faithfulness of His truth, the faithfulness of
God Himself, who said, I'll never leave you and I'll never fail.
They said, well, I don't need that. I believe I can make it
on my own. Next thing you know, they've
made shipwreck. They didn't have no anchor. They
didn't have nothing to hold them down. And if you've got Christ,
He's the anchor of our soul. The anchor of our soul, and oh
my. And you know, it says here, a
strong consolation. That word consolation means comfort. It means comfort. Christ was
the consolation of Israel. And I'll tell you, an anchor
keeps a vessel from discomfort. He gives us a strong consolation,
a very strong comfort. And oh my, you know what comforts
us and makes us not to be uncomfortable in this world? Because we got
an anchor, we got an anchor. And you know, it would keep it
from being blown here and there. And what comfort, what strong
consolation it gives us, gives us. that we're not going to be tossed
overboard, not going to be lost. God himself made this anchor. And God has given us a solid
truce to keep us from being tossed about. That's what he meant,
a strong consolation, strong comfort, not just a consolation
to hold us up and a strong consolation. You know, when John was talking
about his son going to be named John. He said, We ve looked for
the consolation of Israel. And who is that consolation of
Israel? The comfort for Israel, the comfort
for God s elect, the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. And God s given
us here, He said He gave us a strong, verse 18, that we might have
a STRONG consolation. And it says, We fled fled to
this refuge. And I tell you what, He gives
us this comfort, this anchor to preserve us from losing ground. When that anchor is dropped,
that anchor holds that vessel. It keeps us from losing any ground. You know, there's lots of things
that would blow us out. Lots of things that's against
us. I read this morning about the storms that would come on
those two houses. It says the winds blew, the winds
blew. You know how many homes winds
have blown away? Blown them away! They don't even
exist anymore! And I'll tell you, the world
would love to blow us away. Satan would love to blow us away. Our father Adam, in that nature
that he left us, would like to blow us away. And I'll feel as
if a ship's gonna go backwards. I don't know about you, but I
feel like I take one step forward and three backwards. If I've
made any progress in being anything as a believer, I ain't seen it
yet. Feel like I'm going backwards.
But you know why I don't go backwards though? Why I really don't? And
why you don't? We got an anchor that won't let
us go here, won't let us go there, won't let us go this way, won't
let us go that way. We got an anchor that's gonna
hold us down. Let the winds blow. That ship's
gonna stay there. Let the waves come on. We're
gonna stay there. Not because of us, but because
of our anchor. Because of our anchor. Oh my,
all of our weaknesses. You know, all of our weaknesses. All the winds would say, go back,
go back, go back. But our anchor won't let us. You know, you remember that shipwreck
they had in Acts 20, 27 when Paul and them had the shipwreck. He said, pick up the anchor and
let her go. Pick up the anchor and let her
go. And when they picked up the anchor and let it go, that ship
fell all to pieces. And they had to be saved on boards
and all kinds of things. But they picked up the anchor.
Pick up the anchor, and oh my, our anchor won't let us be tossed
about. He won't let us go back. I mean,
that anchor holds us. That anchor holds us. And you
know, when a person makes an anchor,
they make it just right for what vessel it's going to hold. You
don't need a thousand-pound anchor on a sixteen-foot boat. You sink
the boat! But you know, when He makes an
anchor, He makes it just right for the VESSEL that it's made
for. He makes it just right, makes
it just the right weight, makes it just right in size for each
vessel. And it's got enough strength
to hold any vessel that it's made for. And that's what our
Lord does. Everybody don't need the same
size anchor. Everybody don't need the same
size anchor. You know, you may not go through enough storms
to require a great big anchor. And I've seen some people go
through some storms and I'll tell you what, if it hadn't had
a good anchor, if Christ hadn't been their anchor and the anchor
hadn't been weight enough, they wouldn't have made it. I've seen
preachers go through things, and I've watched them, and I
said, How in the world did they make it through that? It's because
Christ was their anchor! They'd go to service and say,
What in the world am I doing here? And the anchor said, You've
got to STAY! Sons mistreating them, sons and
daughters mistreating them, and sons and daughters dying, and
all the things they go through, and yet they got an anchor, and
Abraham, you know what kind of anchor he needed when he took
his son Isaac up on the mountain, and God said, take him up there
and offer him for me? What kind of anchor do you reckon
he had when he started up that mountain? And he said, listen,
I'm not gonna do it, I'm not gonna do it, I'm not gonna do
it, I ain't gonna give up my son. Nope, nope, he said, here
I go. Do you know what kind of anchor
he had? Same one we did. God could not swear by no greater
than himself. He swore by himself. Abraham,
I'm gonna bless you. And we're heirs of the same promise.
And we've already inherited the promise in Christ. And he not
only said that, but he said, I'm gonna give you my oath. I'm
gonna give you my oath. I'm gonna give you my word. And then he said, I'm gonna tell
you something, it's immutable. God's this immutability of God. He swore and he gave an oath
and he cannot lie. Would he give us, would he swear
by himself and give us an oath and lie about it? Make it up! Make it up? No. And I tell you what, anchors,
anchors endure a lot of storms. Anchors endure a lot of storms.
And the safety and the life of that vessel depends upon an anchor. And our safety and our life And
everything about us depends on the Lord Jesus Christ. That's
why He's called the anchor of our hope. The anchor of our hope. Well, God made it. I've told
you, He made a promise. And He said He's sure and He's
stable. He's sure and stable. God's oath. God's swearing by Himself. Who
could doubt His promise? When Abraham took Isaac, God
told him this in Genesis 22. When Abraham took Isaac up on
that mountain, he already told those fellows, I and the lad
are going up on that mountain, and we're coming back. He knows
he's gonna offer him, but he said, if God made a promise to
me, and he promised me that in my son, in my seed, that we'd
have a Savior, we'd have a Redeemer, we'd have a Messiah, someone
to save us. And he believed that if God did
kill him, that God would raise him up again from the dead. He
believed that God would raise him back up. Now that's how much
he believed God. Now you talking about an anchor,
that'd take an anchor to believe that, don't it? But God done the same thing for
his son. Oh my. Who could doubt his promise? Who could not trust his oath?
No matter how violent the storm may be. And they're immutable. God cannot lie. He cannot change. He cannot change His word. It's
impossible for God to lie. And let me tell you this. I listen
to myself preach and I say that all the time. Let me tell you
this. I'm gonna try to break myself for that. I am, I'm gonna
try to break myself. Well, let me tell you this. You know, the anchor holds us. The anchor holds us. And that's
why it calls an anchor of the soul. It's both sure and it's
steadfast. You know what makes us sure and
steadfast? God, His oath, His truth, His immutability. And let me tell you, there I
go again. Gotta break myself for that.
The gospel is sure. We talk about sure and steadfast. The gospel is sure. You know
why we know it's sure? Because it concerns His Son,
the Lord Jesus Christ. It concerns the Son of His love. It concerns the Son, that you
read it tonight, who is in the bosom of the Father. And He come
out and He declared the Father, made the Father known. Nobody's
ever seen the Father, only the Son, and He whom the Father reveals
Him and tells Him about. Oh my, given by God concerning
His Son. And this is, you talk about an
anchor for my soul. Christ Jesus came into this world
to save sinners! And there's one thing I know
for sure, I'm a sinner! I'm convinced of that. Oh, I
know I'm something. I know what I am. And he come to save sinners.
That's a gospel. That's sure and steadfast that
Christ saved sinners. And I know I'm one of them. And
I tell you, here's an anchor for our soul. that the Lord Jesus
Christ is the only Savior. There's no other Savior. We don't
look for another Savior. We don't want another Savior.
We're not looking to anybody, not looking to anything, not
looking to any work of Mary. We're looking to Christ. He's
our Savior. Oh my. He's the Savior. Our Lord Jesus Christ said, Come
unto me. Lord, here I come. Come unto
me. Oh my, I tell you another anchor
that's so wonderful is that Christ's blood cleanses from all sin. That's sure, that's sure and
steadfast. Them girls sung it this morning.
Power in the blood, that blessed blood, precious blood of Christ. Oh my, it's the blood that makes
atonement for the soul. It's the blood, God said, when
I see the blood, not your faith, when I see the blood, not your
works, when I see the blood, not how sincere you are, when
I see the blood, not how you pray, when I see the blood, I'll
pass over you. When I see the blood, when I
see the blood. And I tell you what, and I tell
you, I do know this. I tell you for myself, I need
an anchor that's sure and steadfast because of who I am and what
I am and all that I'm capable of doing apart from that anchor
and that grace. And let me tell you, sorry, the anchor is unseen. The anchor that holds us is unseen. It's outside. And whom having not seen, we
love. Whom though we see him not now,
we rejoice with joy unspeakable. And look what it says, this anchor,
that anchor is unseen that holds us. You know, it's down. It's
down where you can't see it. And look what he says. He said,
it's, it's entered within the veil. Our anchor is behind the
veil. Oh, it enters within the veil.
Oh my, it s behind the veil. And oh, look what it says about
Him. The Lord Jesus has gone within the veil. What veil? That veil that s in glory. That
veil that was His flesh. And He goes on to say, With the
forerunners even entered in for us, even Jesus, the high priest,
made forever. The Lord Jesus has gone on within
the veil. Our anchor's there. And I tell you, within the veil,
that's the place of acceptance. That's where the high priest
went. Once a year, he went behind the veil. Christ went behind
that veil with His own blood, and He went by behind that veil
as our great high priest, as our great high priest. And He's
a high priest like Melchizedek. has no beginning, no ending.
And look what it says, not only is this, this is what anchor
of the soul is, he's our forerunner for us. Forerunner. You remember
John the Baptist being the forerunner for Christ? He went before him, preparing
the way before him. Which way did he prepare the
way before him? Making a straight path for him,
making everybody understand what he was like when he got here.
Telling everybody who he was when he got here, that I'm not
him. And I'll tell you something, our forerunner, what's a forerunner? That means that he's gone before
to tell there's some folks coming after me. Huh? Oh, there's some
folks coming after me. First of all, he's gone to lead
the way. He's going to lead the way. He's going to make the way
clear. He's going to make the way clear.
He's made the way clear for us. You know, when they had those
cities of refuge, They had fellas, there's five cities of refuge.
And they had men that would go out and regularly go down the
roads, going into those cities of refuge and cleaning up the
roads, getting the rocks out of the way, filling up the holes,
making sure that the way into those cities of refuge was clear,
so there would be no obstacle for anybody if the avenger of
blood was after them. Well, our Lord Jesus Christ has
got everything out of the way. So he's cleared the way for us. Cleared the way by his life. Cleared the way by his death.
Cleared the way by his blood. Cleared the way by his resurrection.
Cleared the way by his ascension. Cleared the way as our great
high priest. Oh my. And it also means, the forerunner
means to Harold, there's some people coming after me. I'm here,
I'm waiting on a whole bunch to come. There's a whole, us
gonna come up here one of these days, a multitude that no man
can number, and I know every single one of them. I know every
single one of them. And look what it says here. As
a forerunner, he has entered for us. Us. Who's us? Us? Who's us? The people He entered
for. The people who's He anchored
for. He entered for us to take possession in our name, in our
name. And this anchor, while you turn
to Mark chapter 4, this anchor will hold us in trials. This anchor will hold us in death. This anchor will hold us in death. It'll hold us in this life, and
it'll hold us in death, and it'll hold us in judgment. And look
what here, let me show you this. Mark. I'm in Luke, I'm not Mark. Where am I at here? I'm in the
wrong book, I'm sorry. Mark 4, verse 35, And the same day when evening
was come, when it got in the evening, he saith unto his disciples,
he said, Let's go pass over unto the other side. And they sent
the multitude away. They took him even as he was
in the ship. Christ was already in the ship.
And there were also with him other little ships. And there
rose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship,
so that it was now full. This thing's gonna sink. It's
gonna sink. And he was in the hinder part
of the ship. That means in the back. Asleep
on a pillar. Our Lord had him a pillar. And
they go and wake him up and say unto him, Master, carest thou
not that we perish? He arose, and rebuked the wind,
and said unto the sea, Peace be still. And the wind ceased, and the
wind there was a great calm. You know why they had that anchor? Oh, what a blessed hope. Listen
to this now. And they said, in verse 41, and
they feared so exceedingly and said one to another, what manner
of man is this that even the wind and the sea obey him? Huh? No wonder we have a strong
consolation. No wonder it's sure and steadfast,
no matter what the storm. Christ, our anchor, go keep us. Our blessed Savior, our great
and glorious God, in the precious, precious name of the Lord Jesus
Christ. Oh, our Savior. Oh, our blessed
Savior. Oh, Lord, I'm so thankful you're
a Savior. I need saving, I want saving. I want to be saved. I want to
know you. I want my sins to be all washed
away. We have these trials, we have
these dark days and darkness of heart and darkness of soul
and darkness of mind. And these things that would sink
us and take us under Lord, it can't because of you. And oh Lord, we look to you,
trust you, have no one else we can go to, but we bless your
