5. Read the first 11 verses. But a certain man named Ananias
with Sapphira, his wife, sold a possession and kept back part
of the price, his wife also being private to it and brought a certain
part and laid it at the apostle's feet. But Peter said, Ananias,
why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost and
to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained,
was it not in thine own? Was it not thine own? And after
it was sold, what is it not in thine own power? Why hast thou
conceived this thing in thine heart? Thou hast not lied unto
men, but unto God. And Ananias, hearing these words,
fell down and gave up the ghost. In great fear came all them that
heard these things. And the young men arose, wound
him up, prepared him for burial, and carried him out, and buried
him. And it was about the space of three hours when his wife,
not knowing what was done, came in. And Peter answered her, Tell
me whether you sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea,
for so much. Then Peter said unto her, How
is it that you have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord?
Behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at
the door, and shall carry thee out. Then fell she down straightway
at his feet, Yielded up the ghost, and the young men came in and
found her dead, and carrying her forth, buried her by her
husband. And great fear came upon all
the church, and upon as many as heard these things." Our great, blessed, glorious
God in heaven, Gloriously holy and righteous. And Lord, it's us. It's just, as Abraham said, dust and ashes
coming into your presence. And yet, Lord, you hear us, you
receive us, you accept us for your son's sake, for the blood
that he shed, for the righteousness he gave, for making us acceptable
to you. And Lord, we're so thankful that
we can come into your presence. Thankful for the strength you
give us as our days be. You told us as your days be,
so shall be your strength. And Lord, we know that's true.
And we also know that your strength is made perfect in weakness.
And so Lord, we have some among us who are very weak. Their bodies are weak. Their
spirits are weak. And so, Lord, we ask for your
great mercies for them, for Barb and Helen and Rick and Albert
and Fran and Bill, these dear saints that you've called to go into this
darkness, this trial, this great fight of afflictions. God bless
them. Lord, encourage them. As I go
away, as we go away, please protect this congregation. Bless the
preachers that will take the place, who will stand in this
pulpit. Bless them with a message. God
bless them with the people to hear it. And Lord, we commit
ourselves and commit this body of believers and our gospel and
everything we have, we commit it to your keeping against that
day. And Lord, we bless you in Christ's
name, amen. Amen. Page 30 in our course books,
we'll sing Living by Faith. Page 30 in the course books. I care not today what tomorrow
may bring, if shadow or sunshine or rain. The Lord I know ruleth
o'er everything, and all of my worry is vain. Living by faith, in Jesus above,
trusting, confide, Trusting, confiding In His great love Safe
from all harm In His sheltering arm I'm living by faith and feel
no alarm. Though tempests may blow and
the storm clouds arise, obscuring the brightness of life, I'm never
alarmed at the overcast skies. The Master looks on at the strife. Living by faith. Yes, living by faith. In Jesus
above. In Jesus above. trusting, confiding in His great
love. Safe from all harm In His sheltering
arm I'm living by faith And feel no alone I know that he safely will carry
me through, no matter what evils be tied. Why should I then care though
the tempest may blow, if Jesus walks close to my side? Living by faith. Yes, living by faith. In Jesus

arm I'm living by faith And feel no alarm Our Lord will return
to this earth some sweet day, our troubles will then all be
o'er. The Master so gently will lead
us away, beyond that blessed heavenly shore. living by faith in Jesus above,
trusting, confiding in His great love. Safe from all harm, in His sheltering
arm, I'm living by faith, and feel no alarm. I'm going to deal with these
11 verses this evening, Lord willing. The title of my message is Lying
to God. Satan hates Christ. He hates
Christ. He hates our Lord. He hates the
woman's seed. God put enmity between them right
from the very beginning. And Satan persecutes the church
outwardly. He always had and he always will.
It's like Peter and John when they were arrested. They couldn't get to God so they
got at the closest thing they could, his preachers, his apostles. And they arrested them and they
threatened them, threatened them very, very much, greatly, threatened
them greatly. And they said, if we can't destroy
the church in one way, we'll try it another. If we can't do
it outwardly, we'll do it from within. And the Sanhedrin, they
hated the message, the message of Christ and His resurrection
and their part in His death. Now, the church back here in
chapter 4, the church was of one heart and one mind. Look
in verse 32. And the multitude of them that
believed were of one heart and of one soul. Neither said any
of them that all of the things which he possessed was his own,
but they had all things in common. And with great power the apostles
witnessed of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great
grace was upon them. Neither was there any among them
that lacked, for as many as were possessors of lands or houses
sold them, brought the prices of the things that were sold,
laid them at the apostles' feet, and distribution was made unto
every man according as had need. And Joseph, who by the apostles
was surnamed Barnabas, which is being interpreted as son of
Constellation, a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus, having
land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles'
feet." So here's this church in unity, harmony, one accord,
being very generous, given what they had to feed the poor, spread
the gospel. And so here comes, since the
church, you know, the church was one heart, they were generous,
meeting the needs of the poor, the widowed, and among them.
And that one person was named, in the last verse there, it was
Barnabas, Barnabas, down there in verse 36, Barnabas. It says,
you know, this all son of consolation, that means son of encouragement.
And he wasn't from Israel, he was from the island of Cyprus.
And he gave to help the poor and to spread the gospel. And
a lot of people did. Now here comes into the picture
two people, two people, Ananias and his wife Sapphira. And they're
hypocrites of the highest degree. They were really If I can catch what it means
to be a hypocrite, it means to be an actor, to pretend, to put
on an act. And Barnabas was the only name
mentioned in the selling of the property and landed at the apostles'
feet. Now when they say landed at the
apostles' feet, that means they brought it to the apostles. They
didn't get down there and lay down all their thing at the apostles'
feet. What they gave it to their care
to distribute it. They didn't actually lay it at
their feet, but they meant lay it at their care, lay it at their
door, lay it for them to have responsibility over. And why
did this Barnabas name was only mentioned? Well, Ananias and
Sapphires, since Barnabas was recognized, Barnabas name was
given, Barnabas sold some property and gave it all to the apostles
to distribute it. But Ananias and Sapphira, they
wanted to be recognized like Barnabas was. And they had a
great sin. They had a great sin. Sin is
so deceitful. Sin is so deceitful. And Paul,
when he talked about sin being, he said, you know, when I try
to describe sin, all I can say about it, sin is exceeding sinful. And you can't hardly use the
word sin without using the S, like for serpent. And I tell
you the serpent, Satan. Now their names, they're in verse
one, Ananias and Sapphira. Their name means God is gracious. That's what Ananias' name means.
Sapphira's name means beautiful. So here's this man's name is
God is gracious. Here's his wife's name. His name
is beautiful. That's what their names mean.
And outwardly, they seemed like Barnabas, like everyone else
in the church. It says they sold a possession.
Well, you know, in verse 34, they sold houses, lands, all
kinds of stuff and brought the price of the thing to sold and
give them to the apostles. Barnabas did the same thing and
gladed at the apostles feet. And so they outwardly seemed
like Barnabas and like everybody else in the church. But they
weren't like them in their heart. They weren't like them in their
soul. They weren't like them in their intent. They weren't
like them in their spirit. But in Italy, they weren't the
same. They sold some property. Look what it says. They sold
a possession and kept back part of the price, his wife also being
private to it. and brought it and laid it at
the apostles' feet. They seen everybody else do it
and said, well, we need to do this too. Everybody else is getting
recognized for it, let's do it, we'll get some recognition. They'll
appreciate us doing this. But Peter said, Ananias, why
hath Satan filled thine heart, listen to this now, to lie to
the Holy Ghost? You know, you can commit a sin
against everybody in the Bible, but when you sin against the
Holy Ghost, there's no hope for you, no hope for you. And why
did you lie or deceive the Holy Ghost to keep back part of the
price of the land? So what they done was, is they
sold some property, and they said, now listen, we're gonna
keep so much of it, and we're gonna act like we're giving it
all. Nobody will ever know the difference. We gonna put some
money in our pocket. And oh, they sold property, kept
back part of it, but act as if they were given it all. They
did as everybody else did. They laid it at the apostles
feet. The love of money and the love of praise was the root of
their sin. They love money and they love
praise and recognition. And if they And then Peter, he exposed their
sin. Look what Peter says here in verse four. Their sin is exposed. He said, well, in verse three,
he said, you kept, why did you lie? Why did you lie to the Holy
Ghost and keep part of the price of the land? Why'd you do that? And that's what he says. He says,
why has Satan filled that heart? Satan did this. You know, our
Lord said in Luke chapter eight, He says this, is anything that's
done in dark shall be brought to the light. Anything done in
secret shall be made manifest. And these folks done something
in secret. They thought nobody would know
what we're doing. And so they, and here's the thing
about it. If they, if they would have,
they was lying to God. They was lying to the Holy Ghost.
They said, well, we've given everything we've got. They wasn't
like that widow who cast in her two mites, and the Lord said
she gave of everything she had. Said, you fellas give of your
lot, you give of your great possessions, you give of your wealth. That
woman gave everything she had. These folks didn't do that. They
didn't do that. Why has Satan filled your heart?
You know, and Satan, I tell you how bold he is, and how powerful
he is, and how subtle he is. First of all, he's the one that
deceived our mother Eve in his subtlety and his craftiness.
And then he tempted our Lord in four ways in Luke chapter
four. He tempted our Lord and questioned
him in four questions. Asked our Lord, trying to trip
up the Lord, trying to get the Lord to do something, and trying
to talk the Lord into doing some kind of sin. And I tell you,
Peter says, you know, be diligent, be sober for your adversary Your
adversary goes about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. There was an apostle he wanted
to devour at one time. And our Lord Jesus told Simon
Peter, said, Satan hath desired you, Simon. Satan, I mean, he
wanted you. He wasn't after John. He wasn't after James. He wasn't
after Matthew. He was after you. He's after you. He wanted you.
And He wanted to take you and put
you in a sifter and sift you like wheat and destroy you. I tell you, Satan has not no respect
of persons. I mean, he don't care who he
goes after. And so I tell you what, Satan sought to destroy
Peter and our Lord Jesus says the only reason he didn't And
the only reason He don't destroy us and deceive us is because
Christ prays for us. That's the only reason. You think
we're strong enough to deal with Him? Oh no, we're not. I don't even want to. I don't
even like to mention his name other than what the scriptures
have to say about him. He's called that old serpent, called slew
foot, called beasel bub. And every time you mention him,
he's mentioned in a negative way, and he's always appearing
in religion. And I'll tell you what, he said,
now why has Satan filled your heart? The devil got in you. There was one of my aunts one
time by marriage, Bless her heart. She was that one that told me,
you know, because I wouldn't let her son stay out in the parking
lot with his girlfriend, that I was prosecuting her. But she'd say about somebody
sometimes if they upset her or bothered her, she'd always say,
he got a devil in him as big as a barn. But Satan, he said, Satan's done
this to you. He's got in your heart. And that's
exactly what happened to Judas. Satan filled his heart. Satan deceived him and tempted
him and deceived him to where he sold Christ, the love of money. The love of money, and he said,
I'll sell Christ for 30 pieces of silver. And Satan entered
his heart and he said, do what you gotta do. And we're not a
match for him at all. And then look what he says there
in verse four. He says, that's part of the verse.
Why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? Thou hast
not lied unto men. You've not lied to us. You've
not deceived us. You've not lied to us. You've lied to God. You've lied
to God Almighty. Huh? Oh my, their sin's exposed. You know, Numbers 24, 32 says,
be sure your sin will find you out. But oh my, look how foolish
it was, foolish it was. Look what he said in verse four. While it remained, was it not
yours? Didn't it belong to you? Every
bit of it was yours, huh? And after it was sold, it was
in your own power. It belonged to you. So why did
you conceive this thing? You could have said, listen,
the Lord has blessed me with something. I'm going to give
half of it. I'm going to give 75 cents. I'm going to give 25%
of it, 75%. But if he had done that, it would have been all
right. But he wanted people to think that they gave it all. Wanted everybody to think, boy,
what fine Christian people these are. How generous these people
are. Oh, these folks are dead serious. They're like everybody
else in the early church. Huh? Oh, it was yours. You could do with it what you
wanted. You could keep it all. You could give half away. You
didn't have to do anything. You didn't have to give us anything.
But he says, boy, when you conceive this in your heart, He said,
you wasn't lying to us. Now, how in the world did Simon
Peter know this took place? How did Simon Peter know that
these people had done this? How did he know? How did he know? You know, you know how many people God's
killed in the Bible? I mean, God killed just like
he did at Ananias here. Why have you conceived this thing
in your heart? Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and died. Fell down and died. He's a healthy
man, why did he die? God killed him. And great fear
came upon all of them. You know the Bible's full of
people God has killed, and you know we're in a spiritual warfare.
We're in a spiritual warfare. Oh my, we're in a spiritual warfare. We're in a war not against flesh
and blood, but against principalities and powers and darkness and spiritual
weakness and high places. And our Lord says, you know,
resist the devil, submit yourself unto God. And I tell you, the
only weapon, the only weapon we got is the scriptures themselves. That's what our Lord used. He
used the scriptures. To answer everything Satan tempted
him with. And the only thing that we've
got, the weapon we've got, is God's blessed word. His blessed
word. And that's what he said, sins
against God. He said, you've not lied to men.
And I tell you, before we ever lie to God, we have to first
lie to ourselves. These folks lied to themselves.
As Satan entered their heart, they lied to themselves, and
then because they lied to themselves, they ended up lying to God. And
what they did probably didn't matter to hardly anybody at all.
It probably, in the long and short of it, didn't amount to
anything, but I tell you what, do you know what it mattered
to? It mattered to God Almighty. It mattered to God Almighty. You're gonna be a liar in front
of God? You're gonna be a deceiver in front of God? You're gonna
lie on God? You're gonna say, I'm gonna give
so much to God and then I'm gonna keep back this much and he'll
never know? No, no, mm-mm. And I'll tell
you the consequences of their sin, they died, they died. You know how many people God
killed in the scriptures? You know the first two men that
God killed? They were brothers. They were
Aaron's sons. They were in the priesthood.
They worked around the temple, worked around the tabernacle,
excuse me, the tabernacle. And they were the ones that kept
the fires burning, kept all the fire burning on the altar and
on the altar of incense. But one day they, you know, and
they're supposed to get a censer and carry coals and keep a fire
going all the time. Well, they went over here and
built them a fire. They built their own fire. They didn't get
it off God's altar. They didn't get it out from under
the brazen serpent. They didn't get it from the fire
that God told them to get it. They went and built them a big
fire, took up some of that fire, and then they took that in there.
And God said, listen, I ain't gonna have no strange fire. I'm
not, no, no. I've got the fire. You keep it
in a censer. And that's what they'd do. They'd
carry it in a censer. And then they'd take that censer
and they'd lay it down there and let the coals out and the
fire would start up. They'd put the wood on the fire
under the altar. They didn't do that. They built
their own fire. My fire's as good as God's fire. Our fire's
as good as anything God's got. Our fire's as good as anything
that Aaron or anybody else has ever done. and God struck both of them dead.
And you know what it says? Aaron held his peace. Aaron held
his peace. And then there was Uzzah. That's
one of the things that people really have a hard time with.
There's carrying the ark back on a wagon, in the back of a
wagon. And there was a cow pulling that
wagon, pulling that wagon down through there. And this ark belongs
to God. It's got the law in it. It's
got Aaron's rod that budded. It had the pot of man in it.
But the thing is, it had God's law in it. And that place, we
had the mercy seat on top of it. And they was moving it. And
evidently, it moved around a little bit, and Uzzah rushed out real
quick to put his hand on that ark to keep it from moving in
the bottom. Died just that quick. God don't need your help in taking
care of his ark. God don't need your help in taking
care of his mercy seat. God don't need your help in taking,
make sure that something's gonna get somewhere from here to there.
God don't need your help. He can get his ark to where he
wants it. And then there was Cora. Old Cora said, Quentin told all
of Israel, said, listen, Moses is not the only fellow around
here that knows anything. Moses is not the only fellow
around here. He's not the only holy one around here. He's not
the only one that knows what's going on. And old Cora said,
listen, a bunch of you come over here and I'll take care of Moses. He's just a mess. Come over here
and be on my side. Moses just stood there. You know,
I think about 70 or 80 people went over on this side with Korah. Who's on the Lord's side? Who's
on the Lord's side? That's all Moses said. Who's
on the Lord's side? Korah said, be on my side. Moses
said, who's on the Lord's side? That's a big difference, ain't
it? Who's on the Lord's side? Well,
I think I'll be on the Lord's side. And they just start coming
over there. And you know what happened? Earth opened up. And they all went down. Right
down into the heart of the earth. And it closed right up. I believe
they had an earthquake right there just for them. God just,
boom, they's gone. They's gone. And there's so many,
so many that happened throughout the scriptures. But then Luke
says, Sapphire, his wife was privy of this. She understood,
they devised this thing together. Now look down here in verse six. He fell down and the young men,
and they said they wound him up. That means that they made
him ready for the burial, just like they did our Lord. Wound
him up in linen clothes and carried him out. I don't know if they
dug a grave, I don't know how they done it, but anyway, they
buried him. Buried him. Three hours went by from the
time he died and they had him buried. Three hours. And his wife, Sapphira, not knowing
what was done, she came in too. She came in all feeling real
good about herself. Boy, we've really done something. We gave the apostles some money,
and oh boy, they're gonna start bragging on us here. And look
what happened. And not knowing what was done,
she didn't have a clue. You know, still, I wonder how
in the world Simon Peter knew these things was going on. That's
a mystery, ain't it? How does somebody know what's
going on? I'll tell you how somebody knows, God. God let him know. God said, there's a hypocrite
standing in front of you here, Simon Peter. There's a liar standing
here in front of you. There's a deceiver standing here
in front of you. There's a pretender standing
here in front of you. And I don't like pretenders.
I don't like hypocrites. You know, the hope of the hypocrite
shall perish, our Lord said. And look what happens now. She
didn't know what was done. She didn't have a clue. Her husband's
already dead and buried. How would you like to go in and
find out? You know, they should have met at the door and said,
honey, I hate to tell you this, but your husband's dead. He died
just a little while ago. But they never done that. Oh
no, didn't show any sympathy. That's so many mysteries in the
Bible. Didn't show any sympathy, didn't you know say, oh, I'm
so sorry your husband's dead. I mean, he died and you done
got him buried. Oh my, but look what she said. And in the space of three hours
later, she came in not knowing what was done, came in and Peter
answered unto her, tell me, whether you sold the land for so much.
She said, yep, yep, that's what we're doing. She said, yeah,
for so much. Then Peter said unto her, how is it, how is it
that you have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord?
Again, it's the Spirit of God, the Holy Ghost. And why is it
that you've done this? Why do you want to tempt God?
Why do you want to tempt God? Huh? You know, God destroyed
23 people one day for tempting him. In the day of provocation,
it said. And oh my. And then he says there
in verse nine, behold the feet of them which have buried their
husband, they're right outside the door, and they gonna carry
you out. Then fell she down straightway
at his feet, she died, And they came in and found her dead, and
carrying her forth, buried her by her husband. She repeated
her husband's lie, and it says great, great fear came upon all
them. You see, what I understand here
happened was that these people made an excuse for themselves.
They excused themselves. excuse themselves for their sins
in their own mind, in their own heart, in their own actions.
And I was reading the other day and they call this determinism.
And determinism is this, that we are already determined what
excuses we're going to make to justify ourselves or clear ourselves
or keep us from facing our responsibilities. And a lot of people work very
hard at shunning their responsibility. You know, it's like Ananias said,
well, it was the way I was raised. That was the way I was raised.
This is the way I was raised. This is the way I was supposed
to treat things. Oh, somebody say, well, I was
so mistreated when I was young. That's why I'm the way I am.
That's why Ananias and Sapphire, they said the way I am, that's,
you know, I'm a hypocrite. So what, you know, what made
me that way? A lot of folks, you know, they'll
come up with this thing, I just made like that. Nothing I can
do about it. I remember one fellow told me
that as flat foot as he could. He said, God made me the way
I am. And he didn't, you know, he wanted to be a religious person. He wanted to do things. And we
had some words about it. And he says, well, if you don't
like it, you know, God made me this way. God didn't make you
the way to mistreat his scriptures. He didn't, I told him. No, my,
we'll lie or anything else. The problem is, and this is what
happens here, we excuse ourselves, oftentimes, what we won't allow
in other people. We often do that. I don't know
if you do it, but I do. And, you know, there's a reason. The
reason I've done this was because of this. The reason I've done
that is because of this. The reason I reacted that way
is because I'm this way. It's like a little boy said to
his mama, why is it when I do something wrong, I'm a bad boy?
And when you do something wrong, it's your nerves. And that's the way we are. We do something wrong, somebody,
and oh boy. But I tell you what, these folks,
they couldn't justify themselves. They couldn't clear themselves.
But oh my, we can blame all the people we want to, but still,
we gotta be like Ananias and Sapphire. We gotta stand before
God as we are. Not like we think we are, not
like we hope we are, but I thank God that we can stand before
God Almighty in Christ Jesus. And you know, he says, and a
great fear came upon the church, and as many as heard these things.
The church was in one heart, in one mind, they were just in
such peace and harmony, and enjoying fellowship with one another,
and then all of a sudden, Satan comes along. Satan comes along
in these two people. And there's no perfect church.
The church right then and there became different from there on
in. There's no perfect church, and
you know why? Because I'm in it. Well, we're going to quit. We're
going to go somewhere else, because there's not a perfect church.
No, no, no. If there's anything wrong in
the church, it's us. It's me. It's me. And we're going
to be, like I said, a nice and sapphire one of these days. Gonna
be somebody right outside the door. And we're gonna be carried
out just like them. Gonna be carried out just like
them. So let us, by God's blessed grace, honor God. Never, you
know, if a person's gonna lie to God, lie to anybody but God.
And especially never lie on God. But oh, let us, as long as we
live in this world, Let us be honest with God, honest with
one another, and honest with the Bible. As you know, Barnard
said it, and we've said it here before, God don't send honest
people to hell. And one place you got to be honest,
right here, right there, right before God Almighty. Gotta be
honest right there, don't we? Gotta be honest. Lord, thank you for letting us
meet here tonight. Thank you for your word. I pray
that you'd make it a blessing. There's so many things in your
word, it's hard to understand, hard to grasp. But Lord, you
expose, and you expose these things, and the scriptures were
written for our learning, for our admonition. that we, through
patience and comfort of the scriptures, might have hope. So, Lord, bless
the scriptures to our understanding. Put the fear of God in our hearts.
We would never dishonor you. And, Lord, forgive us of everything
that's unlike you. Bless these dear saints as we
go our way. Keep them and bless the preachers
as they come. We ask these things in Christ's
name. Amen, amen. Well, I'll see you January the
18th, 19th. Good night, God bless you. Oh.
