Turn with me, if you would, to
the book of 2 Corinthians, chapter 2. We'll read verses 20 to 22
for this message. The name of the message is, The
Promises of God. 2 Corinthians 1, 20 to 22, the
scriptures declare, For all the promises of God in him are yea,
and in him amen, unto the glory of God by us. Now he which established
us, with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who had also
sealed us and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
What a wondrous, wondrous little portion of Scripture. All the
promises of God, beloved, all the promises of God are yea and
amen in Him. That's in Christ. And so marvel at what's set forth
before us here in this text. Paul is reminding the born-again,
blood-washed saints of God at Corinth, and all of us today
also, who will read or hear this scripture, that God has promised
us. God has promised us, beloved,
in his word. The promises of God are certain,
remember that. There's certain promises that
are in the scripture, and all the promises of God are certain.
But the promises of God for the believer are certain, certain,
and sure, because they come from our great God. There is sure, one commentator
said, there is sure is his own character. His own name and character. Listen to this in 2 Timothy 2,
verse 19, it says, Nevertheless, the foundation of God standeth.
Sure! Wonderful words. Sure! Having
this seal, the Lord knoweth them that are his. Isn't that comforting? God knows His, He knows His elect. Even before we're saved, He's
known us, beloved, and loved us, beloved, from before the
foundation of the wall. Oh, the Lord knoweth them that
are His. And let everyone that name it
the name of Christ, apart from iniquity. That's what, when we're
born again, by the Holy Spirit of God. Now we know what iniquity
is when we drank it like water before we were saved. Now we
struggle with sin, don't we? Now we hate sin more in ourselves
than anywhere else. Oh my. And we desire to depart
from iniquity and one day, beloved, we're gonna be free from the
presence of sin. Isn't that gonna be wonderful?
We're gonna be in glory, free from the presence of sin. And
these promises of God are all made according to his own will
and purpose. Ephesians 1.11 tells us, in whom
also we have obtained an inheritance being predestined according to
the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel
of his own will. And then the scriptures teach
us that which God has promised, he's able to perform. Do you
know that? Because he's God. Everything he's promised, he's
able to perform. Listen to this in scripture.
Oh my, it says in Romans 4.20, that Abraham staggered now at
the promises of God through unbelief, but was strong in faith, giving
glory to God and being fully persuaded. that what he had promised,
what God had promised, he was also able to perform. Well, praise
be to God. What a blessing. Oh my. God says, I'll save my people
from their sins and they shall never perish. What a promise.
He saved us. You know what, beloved? We'll
never perish. All who trust in Christ will
be with him forever in glory. My oh my. All these precious
promises of God display the qualities of God who gave them. As Peter
brings forth in 2 Peter chapter 1 verses 3 and 4, it says this,
according as his divine power has given unto us all things
that pertain unto life and godliness. Through the knowledge of him,
that have called us to glory and virtue, whereby are given
unto us, God's people, he's writing to God's elect, whereby are given
unto us exceedingly great and precious promises, that by these
you might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped
the corruption that is in the world through lust. All through
the Old Testament, the Messiah's coming, the Messiah's coming,
the Messiah's coming. In the New Testament, Here he
is, the Lord Jesus Christ, the one God promised. There he is,
right there, to save his people from their sins. Oh, isn't that
wonderful? Great in exceeding promises in
and through Christ. Because remember, as our scripture
says, all the promises of God in 2 Corinthians 1 20, For all
the promises of God are in Him, that being Christ, yea, and in
Him, amen, unto the glory of God by us. Look at verse, again,
let's look at that verse, verse 20, look at this verse. Take
note of several particulars in this verse. We're gonna look
at three particulars in this verse. This is amazing, look
at this. For all the promises of God in
Him are yea, and in Him, amen, unto the glory of God by us. Note first the range and scope.
of the promises that God's people have in Christ. All the promises
of God. All of them. There's not a need that any guilty
sinner has that the promises of God does not meet. Isn't that
wonderful? Paul wrote this in Philippians,
but my God shall supply all your need, all our spiritual needs,
right? Everything. People take that
and say, well, look, God's gonna give us wealth and prosperity.
No, that's speaking spiritual things, beloved, right? He's
given us all we need for the salvation of our souls and us
in Christ, in Him alone. God supply all you need according
to His riches and glory by Christ Jesus. There's how we know, by
Christ Jesus, in and through the Lord Jesus Christ. Oh, remember
what he said to Abraham? I'm your exceeding reward. That's
what our king said to Abraham. And this ought to give every
sinner great encouragement to look to Christ, to look to him
for salvation, to supply our every need, all our spiritual
needs. We're spiritually bankrupt. All our needs are fulfilled in
him. Oh, it's wonderful, beloved. Do you need pardon for your sins?
It's in Christ. Do you need forgiveness for your
sins? It's in Christ. We need to be made righteous?
It's in Christ. We need to be sanctified and
made holy. It's in Christ. Oh, it's wonderful, beloved.
Absolutely wonderful. We're ungodly, but praise be
to God, Christ died for the ungodly. Isn't that wonderful? Oh, we
stand naked before God's holiness. Christ provides a perfect robe
of righteousness for us. Jeremiah 23, verses 5 to 6. Behold,
the day cometh, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David
a righteous branch, and a king shall reign and prosper, and
shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. And in his days,
Judah shall be saved. There it is, shall be saved. Oh, and Israel shall dwell safely. That's the church, beloved. And
this is his name whereby he shall be called the Lord our righteousness. That's the Lord Jesus Christ.
That's God incarnated in the flesh. He's the only savior of
sinners. He's the one who shed his blood to redeem our eternal
souls. And Jesus Christ, what does that
verse bring forth? Christ is all our righteousness.
I need righteousness to stand in the presence of God. Christ
is my righteousness. Isn't that wonderful? Oh my,
so marveled by us by nature. We're hard-hearted, but God promises
in the covenant of grace to give us a new heart, a new heart,
the hungers and thirsts after righteousness, that looks to
Christ by faith. Oh, for salvation in hungers
and thirsts after the Lord Jesus Christ. Are you weary and heavy
laden with sin? Have you been burdened down with
the chains of religion? Christ says, come unto me. Come
unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I'll give
you rest. I'll give you rest, he says. Oh, this is God incarnate
in the flesh saying this to sinners. Are you thirsty for spiritual
life? Oh, are you dying of thirst for spiritual life? Christ says,
I'm the fountain of water of life." Oh, it's wonderful. Are you hungry for salvation?
He says, I'm the bread of life. Oh, this is our King. Oh, what
precious promises. Let's read verse 20 again in
2 Corinthians. It says, For all the promises
of God are in Him. Yea, in Him. Amen. To the glory
of God by us. Note the next wonderful truth
set forth in this verse. These promises are certain and
sure, because you know why? They're in Christ Jesus, our
Lord. They're in the Lord Jesus Christ, God incarnated in the
flesh. Look at this, for all the promises of God in him, that's
Christ, are yea, and in him, amen. Ah, is there pardon for
sin? Is there pardon for sin in Christ?
Yes, there is. Thou art a God ready to pardon,
Nehemiah 9, 17. Is there hope of salvation in
Christ? Yes, there is. Neither is there
salvation in any other, for there's none other name. under heaven,
given among men, whereby we must be saved, Acts 4.12. Is there
forgiveness of sin in Christ? Yes, in whom we have redemption
through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, Ephesians 1.7. Is there
justification in Christ? Yes, being justified freely by
his grace, Romans 3.24. So marvel, beloved, Oh, marvel, beloved of God, as
every promise of God in Christ is sure to all who believe. And
this, sinner friend, isn't this wonderful? All this is in Christ. All this, pardon, righteousness,
hope of salvation, all in Christ. My, oh, my. In this This promise
of God in Christ is sure to all who believe. Listen to this.
Therefore, it is of faith that it might be by grace to the end
of the promise, might be sure to all the seed, not only which
is of the law, but to them also, which is of the faith of Abraham,
who is the father of us all. Marvel at this, beloved of God.
Our salvation is secure because the one who has saved us and
obtained eternal redemption for us, it's all in him, and all
God's promises are yea and amen in him, and his name is the Lord
Jesus Christ, God incarnate in the flesh, who shed his precious
blood to redeem our eternal souls at Calvary's cross. Let's read
verse 20 again of 2 Corinthians chapter 1. Note this last wonderful
truth we have in this verse. Oh, and there's many more. There's
many more, but these are just three we're going to bring out.
All the promises serve and work to one glorious end. Unto the glory of God by us. Oh, God has designed and purposed
his salvation to prevent any sinner making boast. in the flesh. We only boast in the Lord Jesus
Christ, who alone is our all in all, 1 Corinthians 1, 30 and
31. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus. Paul's writing to the saints,
that quereth, but of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God
is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption,
that according as it is written, he that glorieth, let him glory
in the Lord. This is why, born again blood-washed
believers, this is why we glory in God and God alone. This is
why we glory in Christ alone, because he's done everything
for us to save our eternal souls. and redeem sinners, give all
praise and glory to God alone, in the promise of salvation,
which is totally in and through the Lord Jesus Christ in Him
alone. Psalm 115, 1. Not unto us, O Lord, not unto
us, but unto thy name give glory for thy mercy and for thy truth's
sake. We who are the born-again, blood-washed
saints of God, we can only marvel and glorify God for the fact
that he has saved us from our sins when he was crucified upon
Calvary's cross. The scripture declares of the
Lord Jesus Christ, but God forbid that I should glory save in the
cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. We have nothing to glory in ourselves,
but we have all the glory in about Christ and what he's done
for us. But God forbid that I should
glory save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the
world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. Galatians 6,
14. Oh, we glory in Christ and Him alone, who saved us from
our sins with His own blood. Hebrews 9, 12-13. Neither by the blood of goats
and cows, but by His own blood, Christ gave His life for us,
beloved. He entered in once into the holy place, having obtained
eternal redemption for us. For the blood of bulls and the
goats and the ashes of an heifer sprinkle the unclean, sanctify
it to the purifying of the flesh. He obtained eternal redemption
for us, beloved. So we glory in him. We give him
all the glory, honor, and praise. We glorify God as the redeemed
of the Lord. We found out that God has loved
us with an everlasting love. And it is Christ who's God in
the flesh who loved us and proved that love by washing us. from
our sins in his own blood. Revelation 1, 5, and 6, the scripture
declares this. And from Jesus Christ, who is
the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and
the prince of the kings of the earth, unto him that loved us. How long has he loved us, beloved?
From eternity. Unto him that loved us and washed
us from our sins in his own blood. It's done. Do you notice that?
That's not speaking of something that's not done yet. Look at
this, unto him that loved us and washed us from our sins in
his own blood. The work's finished, beloved.
Oh, and hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father.
To him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Beloved,
may we glorify our great God for our salvation and the fact
that all his promises are yea and amen in the Lord Jesus Christ
to the glory of God the Father. Amen and amen.
