to Philippians chapter 2 we'll continue our study. Hasn't it
been a wonderful study, beloved, to go through this book? It's
been so wonderful, hasn't it? It's a book of joy, but this
last portion I find, and I'm going to say this again, I'm
going to keep saying this, this portion from verses 5 to 11,
I can see why the commentators say it's one of the most clearest
passages of the deity of Christ and the humanity of Christ. It's
just been incredible. What we've learned has been amazing.
and how he took upon himself the form of a servant made himself
a servant king of kings and the lord of lords and in full submission
to the father and to his will it's just incredible and he's
done that for us beloved for us well today we're going to
look at verse 10 we're finally going to move from verse 9 and
we've just scratched the surface even in verse 9 even though we
spent four or five messages we just scratched the surface of
what's there but the name of the message is every knee will
bow Every knee will bow. And this will happen. This will
happen. Now for the believer, we've already
bowed our knees, haven't we? The knee of our heart, right?
You ever think of that? The knee of our heart's been
bowed. By God, the Holy Spirit, we're born again. And we bow
our knee to King Jesus now, don't we? By faith, we bow our knee
to Him. He's our King. But you know,
there's going to come a time when every single knee of every
single person that ever lived is going to bow and call Jesus
Christ the Lord, to the glory of God the Father. And that's
going to happen at the great white judgment throne. And that's
going to happen. Whether people believe it or
not, it's going to happen. Whether people say, well, I don't believe
in Christ, well, you're going to meet him. And as the old timers
said, he's either going to be your judge or your savior. And
I pray that he's your savior. that you turn to Christ before
you die because there's no salvation outside of Christ and there's
no salvation after death. There's no purgatory, there's
no getting people out of, there's no soul sleep where people just
evaporate and no, souls last forever. And they will either
be, there's only two destinations for souls, it's either heaven
or hell. Right? Heaven by the grace of
God or hell by our own decisions and our own sin, right? Man is
fully responsible. If we end up in hell, it's all
on us. If we end up in heaven, it's
all by the glory of God and all according to his will and purpose.
So, even if sinners do not believe that they will bow their knee,
they will. They will. In this wonderful portion of
Scripture we've been studying, as I say, has brought forth the
deity of Christ, the richness of the deity of Christ. Let's
look at verses 5 to 11, read that together again. And we're
going to see here as we read this that Christ is Lord over
everything visible and invisible. There's absolutely nothing that
is not under His dominion. Nothing. Nothing in the world,
nothing we see, nothing visible, nothing invisible. Everything
is under His dominion. He is the King of Kings and the
Lord of Lords. Our earthly kings only have,
or they used to, we don't have kings as much anymore, but they
only had control over the portion of earth that they were ruling
in. Some had vast kingdoms, some
had small kingdoms, but they were, they had dominion over
that area, right? Our Lord is the King, the King
of Kings, the Lord of Lords. There is nothing outside His
dominion. So let us remember that. He is Lord. So let's read
this. Let this mind be in you, verse
5, which was also in Christ Jesus, who being in the form of God
thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but made himself
of no reputation and took upon him the form of a servant who
was made in the likeness of man. And being found in fashion as
a man, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even
the death of the cross. Wherefore, so because of his
perfect work, because of his obedience, God has highly exalted
him, we see. This is speaking again of the
man Christ Jesus, the God-man. Wherefore God hath highly exalted
him and given him a name which is above every name. Last week
we looked, there was many people named Jesus. But in the Greek,
this is the name. That's the difference. You see
how it says given him a name? In the Greek, it's the name. It's the name above all names. He's Lord. He's Lord. That at the name of Jesus, the
name given by God, right? Thou shalt call his name Jesus.
Remember the angel told Joseph, you call him this. For he shall
save his people from their sins. That at the name of Jesus, every
knee should bow of things in heaven and things on earth and
things under the earth. And that every tongue should
confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the
Father. So last week we looked at in verse nine how The name
again was the name of Christ, the God-man. And he was exalted
after he finished the perfect work that he did for us in our
salvation, right? Shedding his blood, living the
perfect life for us in the ruined place of sinners such as we. And God is, he is satisfied with
that sacrifice. It's wonderful. And again, in
the Greek where it says a name, it's actually the name. It's
specific. It's specific, because as I said,
lots of folks were named Jesus in the Hebrew culture. But there's
only one Jesus who saves his people from their sins, right?
There's only one Jesus who is the God-man. It's the name. The
name. Oh, my. Turn, if you would, to
Romans chapter 1. Oh, my. And he's Lord of all. He's Lord
of all. Look what it declares here in
Romans 1, verse 4. My, oh my. Philippians we see
there, I'll read our verse again, verse 9. Wherefore God also hath
highly exalted him, giving him a name which is above every name.
Again, that's the, the name. Look in, look in Romans 1, 4
where the scripture declares about Christ that he was declared
to be the son of God with power. He's declared to be the Son of
God. He's God in the flesh, according to what? The spirit of holiness
by the resurrection from the dead. God declared him to be
the Son of God with power. God gave him a name. God raised
him, Brother Brian, and he's raised for our justification.
Oh my, that's good news for sinners, isn't it? That's wonderful news. So this speaks of Christ's name
being above all names. And we see, He was of the seed of David, but
He was declared, we see in this verse here, He was declared to
be the Son of God. God declared Him to be the Son
of God. We declare Him to be the Son
of God. Every time I preach Christ, I'm
declaring Him to be the Son of God. I'm declaring Him to be
the only Savior of sinners. I'm declaring Him to be God incarnated
in the flesh. But my declaration doesn't hold
the power that God's power. God declared Him to be the Son
of God. I'm just a messenger. I'm just
a mouthpiece. But God declared Him this. God
exalted Him. God gave Him a name above every
name. God did that. We declare this
because we're born again by the Holy Spirit of God, because we're
new creatures in Christ. We've been redeemed by the blood
of the Lamb. But God, who's all-powerful, look at this too, declared to
be the Son of God with what? Amen, sister. Power. Power. Power to save, eh? Power to keep. Power to do whatever He pleases. All power and might. That's our
Savior, sister. That's the one who's redeemed
us. That's the one who holds us in his hands. That's the one who shed his blood
for us. That's the one who's King of
kings and Lord of lords and ruler over everything. Everything,
visible and invisible. And he's declared to be the Son
of God. So he has a name above all names,
but he's declared to be the Son of God. And see the words there,
according to the spirit of holiness in that verse? This can be either
understood as the Holy Spirit or the divine nature of Christ,
which was what? Without sin. He was sinless. We're full of sin. We're full
of sin. He's absolutely sinless. Not
a thought sin, not a word sin, not a deed sin, not a sin of
affection. Perfect. Perfect. Our Savior is a perfect man. Our Savior is a perfect Savior,
beloved. And we know this because God
himself said, this is my beloved Son in whom I am well Pleased. Amen, beloved. Pleased. God's pleased. Pleased with Christ.
Are we in Christ, Brother Charlie? And God's pleased with us, isn't
he, Brother Travis? My! Isn't that wonderful? That's
wonderful. Turn, if you would, to Ephesians
chapter 1. Tying in with this verse 9 about the name above
all names. So we see he's declared to be
the son of God by the resurrection from the dead. And on this great
fact of his resurrection, Paul rests the truth of his gospel.
Because the resurrection of Christ proves that he's all he claimed
to be. He claimed to be God, didn't
he, sister? God raised him from the dead, exalted him, given
him a name above every name. And by faith, we believe that.
We didn't believe it before, but now we do. Born again by
the Holy Spirit of God. I'm going to keep hitting that.
You must be born again, right? The Holy Spirit moves and works.
Oh, my. He saves. He's still saving.
He's still drawing sheep to Christ, sinners to Christ. My, oh, my. Whosoever will, let him come.
Spirit and the bride say that, right? Oh, my. Let them come. Look at this in
Ephesians chapter 1, in the fact of Christ having a name above
all names. Look at this in verses 21 and
23. How high has God exalted Christ? Far above. All principalities
and powers and might and dominion. In every name that is named,
every important name in this world, He's so far above them. Princes and principalities, that's
like angels and demons and he's so far above them. Not only in this world, but also
in the world to come. Who are we gonna be bowing to
in heaven? Christ. Who's our dear brothers and sisters
bowing to right now, Sister D? Christ. Isn't that wonderful? And we're gonna be there. bowing
with him by the grace and mercy of God. He, Lord, forever, he's
far above all things, not just temporarily, but all the time.
And look at this, and has put all things under his feet. There
is his lordship, there is his dominion. Remember I told you
about, look at that, all things there mean all things. Not as
some people say, well, not man's will, That means all things,
doesn't it? Man's supposed will or man's
not supposed will. We have a will, yeah, we do.
I keep saying to folks, they say, well, you guys think you're
a bunch of robots. No, I was made willing. I was unwilling
and then I was made willing because of this man, the man Christ Jesus. And by the power of the Holy
Spirit of God, I was made willing to come to Christ. And so were
you, if you were a believer. By God-given faith. Isn't that
wonderful? So who gets all the glory? God
gets all the glory. Let's praise his mighty name,
beloved, for what he's done. And then look at this. And I
put all things under his feet. So, everything. Believers, unbelievers. And gave him to be the head over
all things to the church. He is the head of the church.
He's the preeminent one. which is his body. See, the church
is his body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all.
So who's the body of Christ? Well, the body of Christ is composed
of true believers who are born again, right? Some may be called Baptists.
Some may be called Sovereign Grace believers. Some may be
called Presbyterians. Some may be called non-denominational. But do they believe the gospel?
Do they believe the gospel of Christ and salvation's only in
him? And I'm not talking about by our supposed free will. I'm
not talking about by any works. God's people believe that they
are saved by the grace of God, period. Plus absolutely nothing. We humans have put denomination
names on things. That's us. That's on us. And we do that
because of our own sinful ways. Now, do we have the truth? Absolutely.
I believe we have the truth here. I do. I do. I believe 100% what
I preach is the truth. Spurgeon said Calvinism is a
nickname for biblical Christianity. People say, well, what do you
believe? I believe in the doctrines of grace. God shows grace to
sinners. And I like what DJ Ward said,
and I'm gonna keep saying this. I'm a sovereign grace man. Period. And if you wanna know what that
means, come and talk to me. I think, just listen to four
or five of my messages and you find out what that means, right?
It means that salvation's of the Lord, all of it. It's by
the grace and mercy of God. Here, I said, come talk to me.
I'm just going to tell you all. You already know. But anyone
out there who's listening, that's why. We believe in the grace
of God. We don't want no labels. We don't
want no denominational labels. We believe in the sovereign grace
of God. Right? Period. I know that might not sit right
with some folks. That's too bad. That's too bad. We're going to
just move forward, aren't we? Preaching the gospel. My oh my. Which is his body, the fullness
of him that filleth all in all. So we see in verse 21 that God
has exalted Jesus Christ our Lord over everything. Over everything. He's exalted far above all rule
or authority, above all power and dominion in heaven or earth
or hell. He's the name above every name.
That's a, you know, and that's a title that cannot be conferred
in this world. He was given that title by God
the Father. God the Father gave him that
name, gave him that title. Isn't that wonderful? My oh my. That's our Savior, beloved. He's
Lord of all. And we see here that everything
in heaven or hell or everything that's visible or invisible,
he's over it all. He's sovereign over it all. Our
God is sovereign. Our Savior is the sovereign God
who rules over everything. What comfort we can get from
that, eh, Brother Brian? That brings us comfort. My, no
matter what the turmoil in this world, our God's sovereign. And
think of this. I love this. He's far above all
the problems of this world. Isn't that amazing? We're caught
in time and space, aren't we? We're constrained. We're going
to be released one day, at the day of our appointment. But right
now, we're constrained by time and space. We see things in this
little sphere. He sees everything, and He rules
over everything. So remember this, when we get,
and we will, I admit it, we will, we get worked up over our problems
and worked up over things in the world, but let us always
stop and declare to ourselves, I'm preaching to me here too,
right? I'm preaching to me here. Declare to ourselves, you're
over all of my problems, Lord. You're high above them all. You're
not even, you're so far above them, that I don't have, why
am I worrying? Well, it's just human nature,
isn't it? We're all giggling because it's
human nature, isn't it? It's who we are. But let us pause. Wayne, you need to pause. And
trust me, I do it all the time. You ever get this? You get mad
as a rattlesnake at somebody, right? Just get mad as a rattlesnake
at somebody. I've had this happen. You're
just mad. And all of a sudden, you're sitting
there, and you're fuming, and you're like, man, God's forgiven
me so much. Why am I mad at this person? I'm thankful God's not like that
with me, are you? You did it again, Wayne. Isn't God
so good? Isn't he so good to us? Isn't
it wonderful, this salvation? And that just, you know what
that does? That's just the Holy Spirit working in us and convicting
us and making us realize, you know, I talked to Vicki this
week and we were talking, you know, we're all just a bunch
of sinners. We're all the worst of the worst.
We really are. And we know it. And here we are
saved. We can rejoice. We're saved. We're born again.
And the one who saved us is this man, the man Christ Jesus. Let's
read about it in verse 10 here. That at the name of Jesus, every
knee shall bow of things in heaven and things on earth and things
under the earth. Now, all believers have been born again by the Holy
Spirit of God. and given faith to believe on the Lord Jesus
Christ, and we gladly bend our knee, don't we? We gladly say,
I'm not going to bend my knee here, but we gladly bow to our
Lord and say, oh, you're Lord. Isn't that amazing? We used to
shake our fist at one time in our hearts, and now in our hearts
we bow. You're king, you're king of kings
and Lord of lords. That's a miracle, because we
didn't do that. We didn't do that to ourselves.
No. Now we gladly bow our knees. And we will one day bow our knees
physically in glory, bend our knee to him, right? But in our
hearts, we've already bowed our knee because we're born again
by the Holy Spirit of God. And we acknowledge we don't make
him. Now people say, well, just make him lord of your life. You
can't make him lord of your life. God beat everyone to it. He's
Lord. He's already Lord and He's King
and we just acknowledge His kingship, don't we? We acknowledge His
Lordship. And we see here he's given a
name and his humiliation, remember? This speaks of his humiliation.
And the old timers used to call it his humiliation. It just means
that he became a man. But can you imagine how humiliating
that was in the sense that he's got, I've said it many times,
but angels are bowing down before him. Holy, holy, holy. Just read
Isaiah 6. Oh my goodness, that's the Lord
on the throne. That's Christ on the throne. They can't even
look at him. They've got to cover their eyes
and cry out, holy, holy, holy. And then he becomes a man to
save us from our sins, to shed his blood. Because without shedding
the blood, there's no remission for sins. He's sinless. He's
doing that for you and I, beloved. Oh my. So at the time of his
humiliation or his becoming a man, he was given a name, Jesus. Jesus. Turn if you would to Matthew
121. And this was the Lord's given name. And it is because of who he is that
this name has such power because he's the God man. And marvel
at what's being brought forth in verse 10. I'm going to read
it again. Philippians 2, 10. You can keep
your finger in there. That at the name of Jesus, every
knee should bow. Every. Every means every. Doesn't mean some. It means every. Every knee should bow. Of things
in heaven, look at this, things on earth and things under the
earth. Angels and demons and humans and everything. bow their knee to Christ bow
their knee to his sovereignty now remember them demons know
who he is and James even says that they they believe in tremble,
but it's not a saving belief, but they they know who he is
They know exactly they know they even declared him. We know who
thou art thou holy one of God. They know who he is He's the
creator in the flesh My oh my. So marvel what's being brought
forth here. Every knee will bow in recognition that Jesus is
Lord of all. And marvel that the name which
expressed his true humanity, right, Christ, Jesus, Jesus,
which showed his full identification with us. Think of that too. It
showed his identification with us. Thou shalt call his name
Jesus. For he shall save his people
from their sins. Every one of us who come into
the desert is named, aren't we? Oh my. So it shows it's full
of identification with us. It was written over his cross.
And people even made it into a taunt. He saved others. Yeah,
he saved others himself he cannot save. They taunted the one whose
name is above all names. And we see here in our text that
every knee shall bow. And think of this too. I know
we haven't went to Matthew 1, 21 yet, but we will be. Think
of this. When it's the name of all names
and every knee shall bow, what does that show us? It shows us
universal submission, doesn't it? It's not saving submission, but
there will be universal submission. So next time someone says, I
don't believe that, that fellow you're talking about, say, well,
you can bow to him. You and everyone else and me
and everyone else can bow to him. It's universal, isn't it? Every knee. Think of that. Genghis Khan. People say, well,
Hitler was so bad. Look at Genghis Khan. I look
him up. Look at all these horrible people. And then look at this
horrible person who the Lord saved. Because in my heart, it's just
as bad as theirs. And God saved me. Saved you too,
didn't he? You know what Tim James said?
I was listening to Tim James Friday night. Holy Kamuy. He said something. He said, every
woman in here is just as bad as any prostitute that's out
there. And then he said, and every man
is just like P. Diddy. You talk about bringing it to
a level where we can understand. He said, we may not have done
those things, but we're just as wicked as those folks. Isn't that not true? And think
of that. We admit that by the grace of
God. Before someone said that to us,
that's fighting words, man. And now we go, yeah, in my unsaved
nature, I'm just as bad. And God saved us by His grace. God washed us in His blood. God did that. The name above
all names, the one who every knee shall bow, including us
at the end. Every knee. Can you imagine that?
Everyone who ever lived is gonna bow their knee. Billions and
billions and billions of people and say, Jesus Christ is Lord
to the glory of God. It is universal submission. There won't be a tongue not saying
it. Someone says, I won't say it. Yes, you will. I pray that
you say it as Him being your Lord and not as your judge. But either way, all the folks
that He's the Savior of will say it, and all the folks of
whom He's not the Savior of will say it. Every knee. Every tongue shall confess that
Jesus Christ is Lord. Oh my, angels and humans, the
souls of those who died, the ones who are alive still on the
earth because it's coming, Satan and all the fallen angels shall
bow, universal submission and say Jesus Christ is Lord. Okay, let's read verse 10 again
of Philippians chapter 2, but keep your finger on Matthew 121.
We're going to go right there. Look at this. Now take note of
this. This was a name given by God
to call Christ. Do you ever think of that? We
ever stop and think of that? They were told what to call him. They were told what to call him. They didn't pick his name out.
They were told God picked his name out. God told them what
to call him, and he sent an angel to do it. Look at this. God gave him this name, beloved. God gave, and remember, the name,
it's not just, it's not just a normal, it is a name that they
call the people in Israel, but this is a name given by God. Look at this. Matthew 121. And she shall bring forth a son
and thou, what's that little word again? Shalt. Ooh, there's one of them little
hinge words again. Big doors swing on little hinges, don't
they? Oh my. And thou shalt call his name
Jesus. For he shall save his people
from their sins. Now, now this is the name, isn't
it, Brother Brian? The name, this name, this Jesus,
not the other Jesuses who share that same name, but this name,
this name is the name above all names. This man, this man, the
God-man will save his people from their sins. God gave him
that name, beloved. God gave him that name. There
were many people who were named Jesus in Israel, but only the
God-man is meant in this passage. Only the God-man is meant in
our passage in Philippians 2.10 and 9, and only the God-man is
meant here. This Jesus is no other Jesus
but the God-man. And Brother Travis, we know God
prepared a body for him, didn't he? He's he's he's God in the
flesh come to save his people look at look what it says for
he what? Not maybe not if they make a
decision Amen brother they shall he shall Save his people from
their sins. This is 2,000 years before we
were even born I Did we have anything to do with
it? God's declaring that this man, the God man, God incarnated
in the flesh, will save his people from their sins. And he did that
by living a perfect life, and then his perfect righteousness
is counted to us, given to us, imputed to us, and our sins are
imputed to him. This is amazing. He shall, Save his people from their sins.
There's no doubt. He's Emmanuel. The reason he
shall save his people from their sins is he's Emmanuel. He's the
long prophesied one. He's the Messiah. He's God, Emmanuel,
God with us. God with us. Sent, look at this,
not only is he sent by the Father, but he's named by the Father.
And then he's declared by the Father to be the Son of God.
And then he's raised by the Father. And then he's given a name which
is above all names. Oh my, is not the Father so good
to us? Is he not so merciful to us?
Is not the Son so merciful to us? Is not the Holy Spirit so
merciful to us? Oh, this is wonderful. And then
in 1 Corinthians, it says this, but to us there is but one God,
the Father, of whom all things, of whom are all things, and we
in him, and one Lord Jesus, by whom are all things, and we by
him. So Paul's writing to the Corinthians,
who just like the Philippians, remember these folks are former
idol worshipers. They had multiple gods they bowed
down to. And Paul, over and over, I'll
give you the address, I didn't give it to you, 1 Corinthians
8, 6, he says, but to us, there is but one God. One God. Not multiple gods, one God. And remember, they're former
idol worshipers. They've been saved by the power of God, bought
out from under that. And Paul's bringing forth here
that the pagan idols are nothing. They're nothing. We now worship
the one true living God, beloved. And His name is Jesus. And we
are living proof. Do you ever think of this too?
We're living proof that He shall save His people from their sins.
We're living proof. We're living proof of what God
sent that angel to say. Because who is our trust? Jesus.
The one whose name's above all names. The one who has all power. I gotta stop. I got so excited,
I only got through three pages of my notes. But isn't this amazing? Isn't this amazing? So remember,
the Philippians, they're former idol worshipers. They're now
worshiping the one true living God. They're now worshiping the
one whose name is above all names. What a change! And it's all God,
isn't it, brother? God wrought that in them. Just
like he wrought in us, brother Jim. We're born again. And he
gave us this faith to believe. Same faith they have. Faith in
the one who shall save his people from their sins. And he did it,
didn't he? The work's already accomplished. When it says he
shall, he's being born into this earth. When he said it's finished,
it's done, isn't it? Now that comes to us in time
and space when the Holy Spirit fetches us and we're born again
under the preaching of the gospel, right? But I preach a finished
work that's already done. Christ has already saved his
people from the sin. We're just getting led into it
now. You ever think of that? Were we saved by the precious
blood of Christ 2,000 years ago? Yep. But see, it has to occur
for us in time and space, doesn't it? We must believe, right? You can't go to heaven without
believing. And you can't go to heaven without believing on Christ.
Because true God-given faith, you believe on Christ. Right? So the work's already done. The
Holy Spirit comes, regenerates us. We become new creatures in
Christ. We're given faith to believe. And that faith has one
object. Jesus, who came to save his people
from their sins. And not any Jesus. The name. The name. the man Christ Jesus,
the God-man who shed his blood to save his people from their
sins, the man Jesus whose righteousness the believers now clothed in
and has been fully accepted by God the Father. And God the Father,
I'm going to finish with this. This salvation is so complete,
so perfect, that God the Father says, I don't remember your sins
anymore. Glory be to God. Glory be to
God.
