Psalm 48. Continue our study where we left
off. Let's read the whole psalm in
the context of our study tonight. Great is the Lord and greatly
to be praised in the city of our God and the mountain of His
holiness. Beautiful for situation, the
joy of the whole earth is Mount Zion on the sides of the north,
the city of the great king. God is known in her palaces for
a refuge. For lo, the kings were assembled.
They passed by together. They saw it, and so they marveled.
They were troubled and hasted away. Fear took hold upon them
there, and pain is of a woman in travail. Thou breakest the
ships of Tarnash, or Tarshish, with an east wind. As we have
heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, in
the city of our God, God will establish it forever, Selah. We have thought of thy loving
kindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple. According to thy
name, O God, so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth. Thy
right hand is full of righteousness. Let Mount Zion rejoice. Let the
daughters of Judah be glad because of thy judgments. Walk about
Zion and go round about her. Tell the towers thereof. Mark
ye well her bulwarks. Consider her palaces, that she
may tell it to the generation following. For this God is our
God forever and ever. He will be our guide even unto
death. Tonight we'll be looking at verse
10. Verse 10. And the name of the message is
full of righteousness. Full of righteousness. According
to thy name, O God, so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth,
Thy right hand is full of righteousness. So this will be where we'll be. Last study we had a couple weeks
back, because we had last Sunday where we didn't meet, but a couple
weeks back, we looked at verse 9, where we saw that Zion is
a city established by God. Actually, verse 8. We have heard,
so we have seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city
of our God, God will establish it. And it's God who has established
Zion. God who has established the church.
He is the one who keeps us. And He's the one who's established
us all. And we're established in Christ, remember? And that
ties in with what we looked at today, is Christ being the chief
cornerstone. And then in verse 9, we considered
the Lord's loving kindness. Oh, what loving kindness that
is towards we poor, wretched sinners. We are in desperate
need of God's loving kindness. And it says, O God, in the midst
of Thy temple. And that's His people. That's
His people. And remember, we looked also
at how God is always in the midst of His people. And as I said
before, people will say, well, you've got to have all these
folks. No, the Bible says where two or three are gathered together,
there am I in the midst. Oh, this is how intimately the
Lord is with His people. It's incredible. It's incredible.
And Zion pictures the church. And again, we can see in verse
8, it's God who establishes the church, and therefore, it's God
who keeps the church, too. Let us remember that. He keeps
us. He keeps us. He saves us, and then He keeps
us. And it's where He's worshipped
and adored. And so shall it be for eternity, right? God will
be worshipped and adored by Zion, by His people, for eternity. One day we'll be in His midst.
We'll be seeing them face to face. Oh, what a day that'll
be. What a day. And I know we all
long for that. I know we do. We all long for
that. And so what precious truth for
the believer in Christ, what comfort it brings us as we speak
also of God's loving kindness towards us. And it's always,
remember this too, God's loving kindness towards us is always
in Christ. It's always in Christ. And we
think upon His loving kindness towards us. What does it do?
What does it do? It gives us strength, doesn't
it? It helps us to carry on. It builds us up in Christ. And
we have strength to face what comes our way. And as Brother
Matt brought out, you know, it's always Christ. It's always Him
at the forefront. It's always Him before us. And
I know for me personally, when I get my eyes off Christ, that's
when I get in trouble. That's when I get all worked
up. And I do. I'm a sinner just like everyone
else. My, we see in religion, the preacher never said he's
a sinner. So that's the difference with grace. We're all in the
same boat together, aren't we? Oh, my. Oh, my. So what strength
and courage God, when we ponder and meditate upon God's loving
kindness, what strength it gives us amidst trials and temptations
and whatever comes our way. So tonight's verse, this is actually
the verse, tonight's verse is the verse which drew me to the
psalm. And I remember as I had saw this text in the cross reference
and I went to the psalm and oh, that's just a beautiful verse
showing Christ. And then as I read the whole
psalm, I was just led to preach the whole thing, because when
you see it, it's a picture of us. We're Zion, and we're under
siege all the time. All the time. But it's God's
loving kindness towards us, and it's His strength, and it's Christ
who keeps us. And here we see, according to
thy name, O God, so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth. Thy
right hand is full of righteousness. And as I read this psalm, it
just brought me great comfort. Great comfort. This speaks of my King. This
speaks of my God. So let's look at verse 10 tonight
and pray that God, the Holy Spirit, will illuminate the scripture.
And I know I pray that all the time, But that's what we need
to do, isn't it? Because if he doesn't illuminate
the scripture, then my words are just words. And if he doesn't
illuminate the scripture, then we don't learn. Oh, we pray the
Holy Spirit would illuminate the scriptures and teach us the
things of Christ. As Brother Jim said, give us
what we need to carry on, to carry on through the week. Because
we know things are coming. And we just desire the Lord to
strengthen us and equip us. So, according to thy name, O
God, so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth. Thy right
hand is full of righteousness. Now, this morning we looked at
the name, the only name that we can be saved by, right? And
that's Christ. And as I was preparing this message,
I'll be honest with you, I hadn't thought about the name aspect
that I had already. But look at this. See how the
two messages tie right in? According to thy name, O God,
so is the praise unto the ends of the earth. Thy right hand
is full of righteousness. So, beloved, God's name is exalted
above all. Above all. He deserves all the
blessing and praise. And God's people acknowledge
that. We acknowledge that. There was a time when we didn't
acknowledge that. But now we acknowledge that.
You are worthy, Lord. You're worthy. to receive all
the praise and all the honor and all the glory. And let us
ponder this. Let us ponder this fact, beloved
God. that God is truly infinite and
inexpressible. He's infinite and inexpressible. And we try to understand Him
with our finite minds. Have you ever been around someone
that doesn't know Christ and they try to tell you what they
think or who they think God is? And you see the... I'll be honest with you, I'm
just scratching the surface as a preacher knowing who God is. Right? So with you, beloved,
are we not just scratching the surface of what we've learned
about God? He's infinite. He's inexpressible. But He's
revealed Himself to you and I who believe, right? We who believe.
He's revealed Himself to us. And think of this, He keeps revealing
more of Himself to us too, doesn't He? Through the preaching of
His Word. through the hearing of the gospel, as the Holy Spirit
illuminates the scripture, and we go, oh, look at that. I needed
that. That's exactly what I need. But
he's infinite, beloved. So we try to understand him with
finite minds, but God is, he's infinite. He's, think of this,
too. He's infinite in power. There's
no bound to his power. There's no bounds. He's infinite. He has all power. He's infinite in His wisdom.
His wisdom knows no bounds. This is the God of the Bible.
No bounds. Think of this. He's infinite
in His glory. He's infinite in His holiness.
Now that's one for us to ponder because we're sinners. But yet
he's infinite in holiness. That's how holy our God is. He's
infinite. There's no bounds to his holiness.
Do you see now why we must be clothed in the righteousness
of Christ to be in his presence? So our God is a God of infinite
holiness. And I like this. He's infinite
in his mercy. towards His people. Oh, my. And it's all in Christ. And I
like this, too. Because my trust is in Him. The trust for my soul is in Him.
And He's infinitely sovereign. There's no bounds to His sovereignty. He's absolutely... You can't
measure. See, like I say, we think with
finite minds, He's infinite. That's why He says, my ways are
not your ways. And my thoughts are not your
thoughts. What a God. And He's infinite
in His love towards His people in Christ. It's an everlasting
love. And when I ponder, when I ponder
the fact that God has loved me with an everlasting love, my, and I know who I was, I know
who I am, and yet he loves me, a sinner, with an infinite love. This is who our God is. Turn, if you would, to Romans
chapter 11. As I said, His ways are not our ways. His thoughts
are not our thoughts. And I ask you this, who can know
the mind of God? What? Who can know the mind of
God? And as we ponder this, this is
the one who keeps our souls, we who believe. This is the one
who's redeemed. This is the one who saved us. This is our sovereign
almighty God. Romans, chapter 11. So, who can know the mind of
God or who can be his counselor, right? Oh, the depths, verse 33. Oh, the depth of the riches,
both of wisdom and knowledge of God. How unsearchable are
his judgments. in his ways past finding out. For who hath known the mind of
the Lord? Or who hath been his counselor?
Now, leaders on this earth, they need counselors, don't they?
People to help them how to rule in things. The Lord needs no
help. No help at all. Or who hath first
given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For
of him and through him And to Him are all things to whom be
glory forever. Amen. Now the way some folks talk, you would think the way some
folks talk, and I've heard some folks talk like this, the way
some folks talk, you think that they believe that God should
inquire with them how to run things. and that it's not fair. I heard
this too recently. It's not fair that he doesn't
give everyone a chance. Well, the gospel call goes out
to all. That's called the general call. Man just shakes his fist at God. And let me stress this point.
We do not want fair. As I said this morning, fair
is everyone goes to hell. But it's by God's grace and mercy
that anyone is saved. In the elect of God, we shout
amen. Because we know. We're not deserving
of this mercy. We're not deserving of this grace.
Turn, if you would, to Isaiah chapter 46. See, folks try to figure out
who God is. Now, He's revealed Himself in
Scripture, but without Him revealing Himself to us by illuminating
the Scriptures, we'll never know Him. Look what Scripture says right
here. And the problem with most folks
is they don't believe what the Scripture says. Because they're
shaking their fists at God. And they don't know Him. They
haven't been born again. But when we're born again, oh my. We see Him for who He is. And
as I said, we're just scratching the surface. We're learning and
growing in grace. Look at this, Isaiah 46, verses
9 and 10. Remember the former things of
old, for I am God, and there is none else. Now we saw today,
right? Neither is there salvation in
any other. This is the one true God, Hussein. I am God and there is none like
me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times
the things that are not yet done, saying, my counsel shall stand
and I will do all my pleasure." I look at that and where he says,
my counsel shall stand and I'll do all my pleasure, I see an
absolute sovereign God. And I see that there is no end
to His sovereignty. And God, let me tell you this,
God answers to no one. He's not like us. He's God Almighty. He's far above
us. And His ways are beyond us figuring
them out. But praise be to God, He gives
us a glimpse of who He is, doesn't He? We saw that right here. He gives us a glimpse of who
He is. And as He's pleased in Scripture
to reveal Himself to us, we see more and more His absolute sovereignty. We see more and more that He's
a King. Daniel says this in Daniel 4,
verses 34 and 35, and I know we've read this a lot, but it's
fitting right here. Look at this. And at the end
of days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and
mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the Most High,
and I praised and honored him that liveth forever. Now remember,
this is a king writing, a king saying this. So this man, Nebuchadnezzar,
he's a king over a vast domain. He knows what it means to be
a king. Whose dominion is an everlasting dominion. It knows
no bounds. None. is from generation to generations.
Generations come, and generations pass, and his kingdom is still
going. It never, ever ends. And all the inhabitants of the
earth are reputed as what? Nothing. Nothing. And he doeth according to his
will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the
earth, and none can stay his hand or say unto him, What doest
thou? No one. No one can say, what
are you doing? Let's look at our text again.
According to thy name, O God, so is thy praise unto the ends
of the earth. Now great praise is due to the
name of our God. Great praise is due Him. The
works and the glories of our Lord are great. Great. We look at the stars in the galaxy
and they testify of His greatness. We look at the sea. Spurgeon
comments on this portion. Think on this. What if man were
silent in the praise of God? Beloved all of creation, praises
the Lord. The sea claps in adoration of
the Lord as it crashes into the earth and it is continuous. The
trees sway in adoration of the Lord as they are blown in the
wind. And the birds sing praises to
our great God and King. So in all creation we hear the
praises of God. All of creation. So let us consider
this. What we looked at this morning.
And how there is salvation in no other name than the Lord Jesus
Christ. Has not his praise gone to the
ends of the earth from the lips of his redeemed ones? Look at
the scripture again. According to thy names, O God,
so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth. Has that not happened out of every kindred, tongue,
tribe, and nation? It's gone to all the ends of
the earth, isn't it? Oh, my beloved. His name speaks
of the perfections of His nature, which are displayed in the works
of His hands throughout the whole creation. And what a name our great God
has. He is called in the Old Testament,
the Almighty God, El Shaddai, because He has all power. He
is called Elohim, which speaks of His unlimited strength and
His unlimited power. He is called Jehovah, which is
the self-existing One. He alone is God. He is called
Adonai, which means Lord and Master, and He is the Lord and
Master over all. His name is Jehovah Jireh, the
Lord will provide, and He provides all that His people need, both
physical and spiritual. He is the Lord, my banner. He's
the one who we look to. He's the captain of the Lord's
host. He's the Lord my shepherd as He's ever watchful over His
people. No matter what you go through,
He knows. He's watching over you. He's
watching over you. He's the Lord that heals as He
washes us from our sins in His own precious blood, the blood
of the Lord Jesus Christ, God incarnate in the flesh. He's
called the Ancient of Days. Why? Because He has no beginning
and He has no end. He's called the God of knowledge
and scripture declares by Him actions are weighed. He's called
the everlasting God because He does not change. Time does not
alter our God. He is the same yesterday, today,
and forever. Think of the comfort that brings
to God's people in light of Him being the one who saves us, in
light of Him being the one who keeps us. Gives us great comfort,
great hope, He's called the Lord our righteousness, which leads
right into the latter part of this text. Look at this. According
to thy name, O God, so as thy praise unto the ends of the earth,
thy right hand is full of righteousness. Thy right hand is full of righteousness. Oh my. The right hand here denotes
power. And we know from Scripture that
all power has been given to the Lord Jesus Christ. We saw that
this morning in John 17. He has all power, and He sits
on the right hand of God. Turn, if you would, to Jeremiah,
chapter 23, and also Exodus 15. Oh, He's the Lord God Almighty. He's our righteousness. He's
our righteousness. So this verse speaks of God's
great power, and it speaks of the Lord Jesus Christ who is
the righteousness of God. Jeremiah 23, verse 6. In His days Judah shall be saved,
and Israel shall dwell safely. And this is His name whereby
He shall be called. The Lord, our righteousness. This speaks of Christ. And then
over in Exodus 15, 6, look what it says here. Thy right
hand, O Lord, is become glorious in power. Thy right hand, O Lord,
has dashed in pieces the enemy. And our text says, according
to thy name, O God, so as thy praise unto the ends of the earth,
thy right hand is full of righteousness. Exodus 15.6, thy right hand,
O Lord, is become glorious in power. Thy right hand, O Lord,
hath dashed in pieces the enemy. And this is speaking of when
the Egyptians were all drowned in the Red Sea. This mighty army coming to hunt
down the Israelites. Oh, the mighty power of God has
manifested in the fact that God has dashed to pieces the enemy
of Zion. The enemy of Zion. We know that
Israel is a pitcher of the church. Think of this, the right hand
of Christ is expressive of His power. He is one with the Father,
one with the Holy Spirit. He's the mighty God incarnate
in the flesh. He has in and by Himself dashed
away the enemies of His people by the sacrifice of Himself.
As again, He alone is the Lord our righteousness. He alone has
worked out our redemption. Christ alone. He alone has worked
out our salvation by burying our sins. And He's worked out
a perfect righteousness for us. He alone has destroyed our enemies. Sin, Satan, the world, and death.
What a great Savior we have. Psalm 17, 7 says, Show thy lovingkindness,
O thou that savest by thy right hand. That's Christ. The right hand is Christ. Them
which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against
them. Now there's a comforting verse, Psalm 17, 7. Show thy
marvelous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand,
them which put their trust in thee. from those that rise up against
them. And the scripture proclaims that this is Christ in him alone.
Fear thou not, for I am with thee. Be not dismayed, for I
am thy God. I will strengthen thee. Yea,
I will help thee. Yea, I will uphold thee with
the right hand of my righteousness. Isaiah 41.10 And over, turn with me if you
would, to Acts chapter 2. Acts chapter 2. According to thy name, O God,
so is the praise unto the ends of the earth. Thy right hand
is full of righteousness. Our text says, and then look
in Acts chapter 2, verses 32 to 35. This Jesus hath God raised
up. All are witnesses. Therefore,
being by the right hand of God, exalted in heaven, received in
the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth
this, which ye now see and hear. For David is not ascended into
the heavens, but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit
thou on my right hand, until I make thy foes thy footstool. The screams of Christ. Now we
are not righteous in and of ourselves and neither can we muster up
or work a righteousness which is acceptable to God, can we?
We can't do it. We're sinners and all that we
do is tainted with sin. And the righteousness which we
require to be in God's presence is a perfect righteousness. And
the righteousness that a believer is clothed in is a perfect righteousness
which is imputed to us from the Lord Jesus Christ. Oh, turn if you would to Hebrews
12, 14. Do you know that without holiness no man will see God?
Do you know that without holiness no man will see God? Look at Hebrews 12, 14. Follow peace with all men. Hebrews
12, 14. Follow peace with all men in
holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. Think on this, beloved. God is
so holy. Where He dwells is holy. Heaven is holy just because of
Him. Christ is holy. The Bible is the Holy Bible.
The Spirit of God is called the Holy Spirit. The angels in heaven
are holy angels. Those who are redeemed and in
the presence of God are holy as they are clothed in the perfect,
spotless robe of righteousness, Christ's righteousness. It says, follow peace with all
men and holiness without which no man shall see the Lord, but
I'm a sinner. As I say though, God's people
are clothed in the righteousness of Christ. Our sin was imputed
to Christ and he paid all that was demanded and his righteousness
is imputed to us. What a Savior. What a Redeemer. The God. The God of our salvation. The
Lord our righteousness. Psalm chapter 4 verse 1 says,
Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness. Thou hast enlarged me when I
was in distress. Have mercy upon me and hear my
prayer. He's the God of my righteousness. And the Lord does not leave His
people. Thankfully, He does not leave us in our self-righteousness.
But again, we're clothed in the righteousness of Christ. Psalm
5.8 says this, Lead me, O Lord, in Thy righteousness, because
of mine enemies. Make Thy way straight before
my face. Oh my. in thy righteousness,
in the righteousness of God, which is revealed in the Gospel
from faith to faith, and is imputed by God, and received by faith,
and found only in Christ. Lead me, O Lord, in thy righteousness,
because of mine enemies. Make thy way straight before
my face. Psalm 5 8. Psalm 48, 10, according to Thy
name, O God, so is Thy praise unto the ends of the earth. Thy
right hand is full of righteousness. Spurgeon comments this, thy scepter
and thy sword, thy government and thy vengeance are altogether
just. Thy hand is never empty, but
full of energy, of bounty and of equity. Neither saint nor
sinner shall find the Lord to be an empty-handed God. He will
in both cases deal out righteousness to the full. To the one through
Jesus, he will be just to forgive, to the other just to condemn. And for God's people, all spiritual
blessings are in Christ. He's the only righteousness that
we need. And His is the only righteousness
which God will accept. And praise God, it's imputed
to His people. Our God is a righteous God. Therefore,
everything He does is in righteousness. All His works are righteous works. which the right hand being the
instrument of action is a demonstration of. Christ is the right hand
of God. He is the man of His right hand.
He's very dear to Him. He's the right hand of His righteousness
by which He upholds all His people. The only reason we're upheld
is because we're in Christ. But oh, think of the one who
holds us. God incarnate, the one who was
God incarnate in the flesh and the one who is still currently
the God-man in heaven, in glory, seated at the right hand of the
Father, ruling and reigning in absolute power. And His is an
absolute righteousness. He's the author, Christ is the
author and the giver of the righteousness. that His people receive in one
day. One day, here execute righteousness
upon His enemies. Turn if you would to Revelation
chapter 19. Revelation chapter 19. Here execute righteousness upon
His enemies. In righteousness here make war
with them. Look at Revelation 19 verses 11 to 16. And I saw heaven opened, and
behold the white horse, and he that sat upon him was called
Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His
eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns,
and he had a name written that no man knew but he himself. He
was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood, and His name is called
the Word of God. This is the Lord Jesus Christ.
And all the armies which were in heaven falled Him upon white
horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, and out of His
mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it He should smite the nations.
And he shall rule them with a rod of iron, and he treadeth the
winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he
hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King of
kings and Lord of lords. But note in verse 11, And in
righteousness he doth judge and make war. One is either clothed in His
righteousness or one faces His righteous judgment. Let's go back to Psalm 48, verses
10 and 11. According to Thy name, O God,
so is Thy praise unto the ends of the earth. Thy right hand
is full of righteousness. And then look at verse 11. Let
Mount Zion rejoice. Let the daughters of Judah be
glad because of Thy judgments. So we've looked at here tonight,

in the flesh. In 3 John, He's the truth. In
Jude, he's the believer's security. And in Revelation, he's the king
of kings. And he's the Lord of Lords. What
a name. What a name. That's our Savior. Gracious Heavenly Father, we
come before Thy throne. Oh, we praise You and thank You
for Your Son, our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. And Lord Jesus,
we thank You for leaving the glories and splendor of heaven
and living upon this sin-cursed earth. in obeying the law perfectly
in our place, and weaving a coat of righteousness that the believer
is now clothed in, and that we can be in the presence of our
God. Oh, thank you for your sacrifice
upon Calvary's cross for my sins, and I know all we who believe
Give You thanks and praise for dying upon the cross for us in
our room and stand. We pray that You'd use this message
to draw on Your lost sheep, that You might receive all the glory
and honor and praise. In Jesus' name, Amen.
