Wonderful, wonderful songs we
sing to God's glory. Today we'll be in Psalm 98, the
text that we read. Psalm 98. It's good to be here again today,
every day. It's always good, though, to
be in the house of the Lord. You know, this really is an oasis
for us, isn't it? We look forward to coming here
and being with God's people and fellowshipping around the Word
and rejoicing in our great King because He's done marvelous things.
Marvelous things. We who believed, He saved us
from all our sins. We make a joyful noise. Psalm 98, verses 1-4 we'll read,
and then there will be a text in Genesis 18-25. So Psalm 98, we'll look at verses
1-3 in depth. And then, as I said, Genesis
18-25. The name of the message is, The
Lord is King. You might recognize that from the song that we just
sang. We sang the song, The Lord is King. And what I'd like to
do, is this message is based upon the underlying Bible text
that that song is based upon. The songs that we sing are so
doctrinally rich. And we live in a time when doctrine
doesn't really matter to most folks. But doctrine is so important. And scripture is so important.
And the songs that we sing need to be based upon the scriptures.
That's why we do like to sing the old hymns. They're rich.
They preach the gospel in song. And it's incredible. But I woke
up on Friday morning, and it's funny because I woke up on Friday
morning with the idea of looking at the underlying, some of the
underlying texts and some of the songs that we sing. Because
a lot of the songs we sing, like I say, they're very rich and
they're based upon scriptures that we might not always look
at. And this one here, I went on the internet, and this song
was requested to sing. I got to my study, and this song
was requested to sing. And if you ever have any requests,
just let me know. And I tie things in with the
message and all that. But this song was requested,
and so I searched the internet for one of the pages where they
show the old hymns. And I knew that this hymn was
pretty old, because Condor, one of the guys who wrote the songs,
he's from the 1700s, I believe. So I went on and I looked and
well, it said this song was based on Psalm 98 verse 1 in Genesis
18 25 So that's how the sermon came
about. Just looking at the text and reading the text. So let's
look here. The Lord is King. The Lord is
King. Psalm 98, verses 1 to 4, and then Genesis 18-25. And what
we'll do is first of all, we'll look at the verses in Psalm,
and then we'll close with looking at the verse in Genesis. Oh,
sing unto the Lord a new song, for He hath done marvelous things.
His right hand and His holy arm hath gotten Him the victory.
The Lord hath made known his salvation. His righteousness
hath he openly showed in the sight of the heathen. He hath
remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth. Make a loud
noise and rejoice and sing praise. Now, verse 4 is a result of verses
1, 2, and 3, right? Because it springs out of a joyful
heart. It springs out of a heart who's being redeemed, a soul
who's being redeemed. And then look at Genesis 18,
25. And what I want to do is we'll look at the very last part
of the verse. I'll read the whole verse, but, "...that be far from thee to
do after this manner." Genesis 18, 25. That be far from thee to do after
this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked. And that the
righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee. And this
is the portion that this song was based upon. Shall not the
judge of all the earth do right? Shall not the judge of all the
earth do right? And then you tie that in with
Psalm 98.1 and we see that our Lord is King. He's a King. And because our Lord is King,
then for the believer all is well. No matter what happens
in our lives, all is well. I know sometimes circumstances
and things come up and it doesn't seem like all is well. But God
has a plan and a purpose and all things work for our good
and for His glory. We can't see it. We usually don't
see it, but it does. It all works according to his
plan and his purpose. And he's a king. He's a king. He rules and reigns sovereign.
As I said this morning, he doesn't have any advisors, doesn't have
any people counseling him. He's a sovereign supreme king. And he needs no one. He's perfectly
content in himself and in eternity, God was content, A.W. Pink said
this, God was content in eternity, just being God. And he did all
this to manifest his glory. What a great king. But he's a
king. Now men, you hear men talk about who they think God is,
and you fast realize that they don't know the God of the Bible.
Because the God they speak of is at their beck and call. You
get these false preachers saying, just send in your money. God
will grow it and all that. God is not at our beck and call. We are at His mercy. He is a sovereign king. You know,
when a king rules, he rules sovereignly. He's in charge. Well, he's the
king of kings and the Lord of lords. And he rules in heaven
above. And all things work out according
to his purpose and plan. And he governs the universe and
our world as he pleases. This is the God of the Bible. The God of man's imagination,
as I say, it's all based upon what we do. And He's basically
controlled by man. But that's not the God of the
Bible. Oh, the God of the Bible is a
sovereign being. And He does, as I say, whatever
He pleases to do. This is why we say, flee to Him.
Flee to Christ. The God of the Bible is a great
God far above the heavens. And He rightly deserves all our
glory and all our honor and all our praise. I was listening to Henry this week
and he said something that was pretty neat. He said, you
know, people always say, well, it's
our sin that keeps us from Christ, right? And he said, but God has
a remedy for our sin. Do you know what it is that keeps
us from Christ? It's our self-righteousness. It's our self-righteousness. What does God do when he saves
a soul? He shows us our self-righteousness,
doesn't He? And we run to Christ. We just
flee to Him. Because we see our sinfulness
before Him. We see our pride and our arrogance. And He breaks
us. He humbles us. And He's a great
King. And then we give Him all the
glory for revealing Himself to us. I was thinking about how our
God is a great God, far above all the heavens. I was doing
a search, and I did a search on the Earth
in space. Here's this vast darkness, right? Space. Stars and everything.
And here's this globe of the Earth. And as I was looking at these
pictures, you know, and you see the oceans and you see the cloud
movements and stuff, and I thought, I'm not even, I'm a speck. You can't even see. But yet he's
had mercy on me. Oh, what a great God. And he
is far above. far above the heavens. And yet
our Heavenly Father watches over every single one of His sheep. Oh, it brings us comfort. And this is true of you. If the
Lord saved you, that He watches over you. You're not alone. He says to His people, I'll never
leave you. Nor forsake you. Never. Never. So is it any wonder, as we think
on these things, is it any wonder that we should praise our great
God and King? That God would have mercy upon
sinners. Little pieces of animated dust. Oh, we should be in awe also
that God sent his son to die as our substitute. The God who is all higher than
the heavens becomes a man and dwelt among
us. As I said, as we look at this
terrestrial ball called earth, maybe we'd be aware and think
of that. I think next time you look at
a picture of the earth and space, God is higher than that. Higher
than all the heavens, right? But he became a man. What condescension. What condescension. He became a man. Fully man and
fully God. And dwelt among us. Why? To redeem
us. To redeem us from our sins. We
couldn't save ourselves. So God becomes a man. And it's
all part of His purpose and plan. He purposed it in eternity. And
does this not fill our hearts just with awe that Christ became
a man and died in the room and place of sinners? And He suffered at the hands
of man. What condensation. The King becomes
a servant. The King becomes a servant. Our God is full of mercy and
grace, isn't He? Look at Psalm 98, verse 1. We'll
look at the first three verses, and then we'll go to Genesis.
But look at this first verse. Oh, sing unto the Lord a new
song, for He hath done marvelous things. His right hand and His
holy arm hath gotten Him the victory. Do we not sing a new
song, those of us who have been redeemed by the blood of the
lamb? Do we not sing a new song that we never sung before? Songs
of praises and worship, the very name I used to curse, now I praise.
That's a marvel of grace, beloved. That's a marvel of grace. And
what mercy that he didn't destroy me. And those of us who believe. He has grace, full of grace and
mercy, full of grace and mercy. Oh, we sing a new song. We're
born again by the Holy Spirit of God, redeemed by the precious
blood of Christ, and we sing praises unto our great God and
King. We give Him all the glory, and we give Him all the honor,
because He's fully deserving. He's fully deserving. And He
has done marvelous things. Marvelous things. Those of us,
we couldn't, as I've often said, we couldn't save ourselves, we
couldn't pay the price for one of our sins, let alone the billions
that we've committed. He pays it all, once. By the
shedding of His precious blood. And all who believe on Him are
redeemed. Redeemed. Oh, he's redeemed our souls from
eternal hell. He paid the price that the justice
and law demanded for our sins. God himself assumed human nature
and became a man, fully God and fully man. Born of a virgin,
pure, spotless, Sinless. That alone should make us marvel. I remember here reading, this
week too, reading an old preacher from the past, and he said, you
know, there's certain things that we don't do, and we get
all proud about that, but what do we think? Oh, we're sinners,
aren't we? We're in despair. Even when we're
saved, we're sinners. We're saved sinners. But oh,
what a wonderful salvation we have in Christ. What a wonderful
salvation we have in Him. Jesus Christ, our King, lived
a marvelous life, and He died a marvelous death. And His resurrection is marvelous
also. And then he went to heaven, seated
at the right hand of the Father. Does this not fill our hearts
with joy? Lifts us up from this world of
woe that we go through. It's not easy, is it? It's not
easy. We go through different things,
and every one of us go through different trials. What I may
be weak in, you may be strong in. And it's all by the grace
of God in Christ. He gives us the grace to carry
on. He preserves us and keeps us. That's why we say, keep looking
to Christ. Keep looking to Christ. When a circumstance comes up,
you know, I know for myself, the first thing is you're like,
oh, because it's unexpected. But just remember, it didn't
catch God by surprise. He's purposed it and planned
it. And just pray that God will give you the grace and the strength. But he deserves all the praise,
doesn't he? And we sing a new song. We sing a song about redemption. We sing a song about one who
has redeemed us from all our sins. All of them. We sing about our great God who
condescended and became a man. humbled himself to die in the
room instead of his people before God's holy law. The very law he gives, he fulfills. Is that not grace? And he fulfills
it in our place. He's sinless. Oh, it's marvelous. And for this
he deserves the highest praise. His acts have proved His deity. Jesus is Jehovah, and therefore
we sing unto Him. Look in our text in verse 1,
it says, His right hand and His holy arm hath gotten Him the
victory. This speaks of Christ. This speaks
of Christ. And think of this, He did it
with the aid of no other. He didn't need any help. He did it all on His own. And
we know the words He cried. It is finished. Oh, sweet words to the believer.
My redemption is complete. And He did this by His own mighty
hand. He has achieved the victory. He has achieved the conquest
by His own mighty hand, by the Lord Jesus Christ. He did it
all. Sin, death, and hell fell beneath
His power. Death doesn't have a sting for
the believer anymore. We're just entering into glory.
And I know we all get troubled, but the Lord gives dying grace. I've seen it. Oh, peace. He did all this. This salvation
that is wrought out by Jesus Christ and Him alone. And hence
it's subscribed to His right arm in our scripture here. That's
Christ. His right hand and His holy arm
had gotten Him the victory. Unaided work. Unaided work. Jesus paid it all. We sing that
song, don't we? He did it all. He did it all. The Lord Jesus Christ has done
this, and we praise His mighty name.
Let's look at verse 2. The Lord hath made no one His
salvation. His righteousness hath He openly
showed in the sight of the heathen. Beloved, he made known his salvation
by the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. He hath made known his salvation,
and by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit of God, by whose
power the gospel was preached among the Gentiles. And think on this. We would never have discovered
salvation if God had not revealed himself to us. Turn, if you would, to 1 John
3. And put your finger also on John
17. God was manifested in the flesh. God, the very God who rules the
universe, became a man. 1 John 3 and John 17. But He must reveal Himself to
us or we will never, never know Him. He must reveal Himself. He was manifested in the flesh.
1 John 3, verses 5-8. And you know that He was manifested,
look at this beloved, you who trust Christ to take away our
sins. That's good news for sinners.
to take away our sins. He is manifested to take away
our sins. It's not a maybe. Oh, beloved, He did it. And this
is why He is manifested. He came to save His people from
their sins. And in Him is no sin. None. Not in thought, word, or deed.
Absolutely perfect. I think on that and my mind just
It's incredible. No sin. None. But He's God. He's God. Whosoever bitheth in Him sinneth
not, whosoever sinneth hath not seen Him, neither knoweth Him.
Little children, let no man deceive you. He that doeth righteousness
is righteous, even as he is righteous. He that committeth sin is of
the devil, for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this
purpose was the Son of God manifested. Again, He was manifested, that
He might destroy the works of the devil. Remember on Wednesday
night, we're translated from the kingdom of darkness to the
kingdom of His dear Son. Colossians chapter 1. Wonder
of wonders. God was manifested in the flesh.
Turn to John 17, verses 5 to 7. And God's mercy is only through
the mediator. It's only through Christ and
Him alone. Nowhere else is salvation found. It's not found in any of our
works. It's not found in any other religion.
It's only found in Christ and Him alone. He has all power.
All of it. Look at John 17, verses 5-7,
in looking at the vein of God manifested in the flesh. And
now, O Father, glorify Thou me with Thine own self, with the
glory which I had with Thee before the world was. See, He was God
in eternity. And He was born King, right? God, King. And now He reigns
as King. And now, Father, glorify Thou
me with Thine own self with the glory which I had with Thee before
the world was. I have manifested Thy name. Remember,
He reveals Himself. He reveals Himself. Unto the
man which Thou gavest me out of the world, Thine they were,
Thou gavest them me, and they have kept Thy word. Now they
have known that all things whatsoever Thou givest me are of Thee. Oh,
beloved of God, there is mercy through the Mediator. Mercy through
the Mediator, the Lord Jesus Christ, who became a man to save
His people from their sins. And we know that. 1 John said
this, and you know that He was manifested to take away our sins. Oh, wonderful. But He must reveal
Himself to us. He must. Or we'll be unable to
discern Him. And look at where our text continues
in Psalm 98. His righteousness hath He openly
showed in the sight of the heathen. The Lord Jesus Christ is the
righteousness of God. He's the righteousness of God.
He is the Lord our righteousness. The word righteousness was a
word often used by the Apostle of the Gentiles as he dwelt upon
the Lord Jesus Christ. making man righteous and vindicating
divine justice in our place. He vindicated divine justice
in our place. He paid everything God demanded
for His people. Turn if you would to Romans chapter
1. It was all by His atoning blood. It was all by His atoning
blood. He paid everything God demanded. He came into this world to do
this. Look at Romans 1, verses 16 and
17. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the
power of God unto salvation. It's the dynamite of God in the
Greek. It's the power of God. To everyone that believes it,
you must believe. to the Jew first and also to
the Greek, for therein is the righteousness of God revealed."
Where? In Christ. The righteousness
of God is revealed in Christ. He is the Lord, our righteousness. From faith to faith, as it is
written, the just shall live by faith. We live by faith, don't
we? We live trusting and resting in Christ all the time. We don't
trust in our own strength. There was a time when we had
confidence in the flesh. We don't have that anymore. Now
we look to Him. He is our confidence. He's our
hope. He's our strength. When I'm weak, He's strong. Oh,
what a wonderful, wonderful Savior. And you know, all the righteousness
that a sinner needs to be in God's presence is found in Christ. We need to be perfect, right?
We need to be made perfect, sinless. And when God looks upon a sinner
who's clothed in the righteousness of Christ, he sees Christ. He
doesn't see my sin. Oh, it's wonderful. Wonderful
news for sinners. And it's given by the grace of
God. By the grace of God. And by faith
alone, to God's glory alone, we give Him all the glory. Philippians
says this, and be found in Him, not having mine own righteousness.
Philippians 3, verse 9. And being found in Him, in Christ.
So when we see in Him or in whom, it's always pointing to Christ.
And be found in Him, not having mine own righteousness, which
is of the law. but that which is through the
faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith." Our
sins were imputed to Christ, and He gives us His perfect robe
of righteousness, so that we can stand in the presence of
a holy God. What a wonderful God. What a
wonderful salvation. And it's only in Christ. If you
add a pinprick of your works, it's no longer grace. Just a
pinprick. But salvation, beloved, salvation
sinner friend, and we're just sinners saved by grace, we've
been saved, is all of grace. It's all of grace. It's all of
His doing. And this stirs songs of praise
in our hearts, doesn't it? It stirs songs of praise. The Lord is my righteousness.
He's revealed Himself. For therein is the righteousness
of God revealed from faith to faith. We who are of the Gentiles, heathen,
with no care for God at all, He translates from the kingdom
of darkness to the kingdom of His dear Son by the regenerating
power of the Holy Ghost. And now we look to Christ and we give Him all the glory
and we give Him all the praise. Turn, if you would, to Colossians
chapter 1. Colossians chapter 1, we've been
looking at this on Wednesday nights. This Wednesday, last
Wednesday we looked at verse 13, and this coming Wednesday
we'll look at verse 14. But look at verses 12 to 14. Giving thanks unto the Father
which hath made us meet. Now that little word, meet, means
to be qualified. In our natural state coming into
this world, we are not qualified for heaven. But in the Greek,
that word means qualified, made fit. The believer is qualified, made
fit for heaven. How? Through Christ and through
Him alone. Does this not just destroy works?
It absolutely destroys works. It's Him, giving thanks unto
the Father, which hath made us meet, made us qualified, made
us fit to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in
life, who hath delivered us from the power of darkness. Now that's
the darkness of our sin. That's the darkness of Satan's
kingdom. Translated us into the kingdom
of his dear Son. And then look at verse 14. In
whom? In Christ. We have redemption through His
blood, even the forgiveness of sins. And He translates us. We're
born again by the Holy Spirit of God. The whole Trinity is
in action in the salvation of sinners. Oh, what a mighty God
we have. Turn back to our text in Psalm
98. In verse 2, it says in the latter
part, He openly showed in sight of the heathen. And this is clearly taught in
Scripture and plainly preached. The Gospel is preached and proclaimed
all over the world. And it was shown in types and
shadows in the Old Testament, wasn't it? But when Christ came
to earth, it was manifested, openly showed in the Gospel. Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God,
sacrificed for the sins of His people. And Paul went out and
proclaimed it to the Gentiles, to the heathen. They were the
heathen. And out it went. The Gospel goes. And it's still
going forth today. Look at verse 3. He hath remembered
His mercy and His truth toward the house of Israel. All the
ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. God has
remembered His mercy and His truth. toward the house of Israel. Now Jesus came to the nation
of Israel in the flesh. To them the gospel of God's free
grace was first preached. And they counted themselves unworthy
of eternal life. And yet the covenant was not
broken. The covenant was not broken. For the true Israel were
called into fellowship and still remain so. Those given by the
Father to Christ in eternity past, they are the ones to whom
He hath remembered His mercy. Turn, if you would, to Acts chapter
13. Acts chapter 13. Oh, He will never forget His
mercy towards His people. Acts chapter 13, verses 44 to
48. God has remembered His mercy
and truth toward the house of Israel. The Israel of God. The
spiritual Israel. All who are in Christ. I'll read
Galatians first. It says this. There is neither
Jew nor Greek. There is neither bond nor free.
There is neither male nor female. For ye are all one in Christ
Jesus. One body, right? One people. Scripture plainly declares there's
neither Jew nor Greek in the body of Christ, or one in Him.
And it says, "...and if ye be Christ, then ye are Abraham's
seed, and heirs according to the promise." The Israel of God. With that in mind, let's look
at Acts 13. Scripture declares this, verse
44, "...and the next Sabbath day came almost the whole city
together to hear the word of God, But when the Jews saw the
multitudes, they were filled with envy. Oh, religious people
get jealous. And spake against these things
which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. Then Paul and
Barnabas waxed bold and said, it was necessary that the Word
of God should first have been spoken to you. But seeing you
put it from you and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life,
lo, we turn to the Gentiles. What was the Gentiles' response?
And we know God's working, right? He's working on hearts, all the
Gospels being preached. For so hath the Lord commanded
us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that
thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. And
when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad. They were rejoicing. Salvation for them too in Christ. Remember our text in Galatians?
There's neither Jew nor Greek. One body. They were glad and
they glorified the word of the Lord. And here we go, God's purpose
and plan. And as many as were ordained
to eternal life believed. Oh, what a wonderful God. God
has remembered His mercy and truth toward the house of Israel. His mercy towards his elect endures
forever. It doesn't change. His love towards
his elect endures forever. It never changes. And what comfort
that is for us as we go through this world. His love towards
us never changes. Never. And you moms can know this. Your children can do anything.
And you're always loving. Oh, and the same with us, man. We love our kids. We love our
children. God's love never changes towards
His people. Never. It's an everlasting love. Turn, if you would, to Revelation
5, verses 9 and 10. And then put your finger in Genesis
18, and we're closed with looking at Genesis 18. Think of this,
the gospel in such a short time has spread through the known
world. Think of how fast it's spread in the times of Paul.
Think of how far it's went even in our time now. Now the gospel's spread via the
internet and all kinds of other means, it just goes out. Printed,
it just out goes the gospel, reaching far places. And our God has been honored
by those. Our God has been honored by those who once bowed down
before dumb idols. Those who were blind and deaf.
Those who were enemies in their mind. Now we praise and worship
Him. Look at Revelation 5, verses
9 and 10. And remember, in our psalm, sing
unto the Lord a new song, right? Revelation 5, 9 and 10, and they
sang a new song. It's a song we didn't sing by
our natural birth. Thou art worthy to take the book
and to open the seals thereof, for thou wast slain, Christ died
on the cross, and has redeemed us. He did it. Redeemed us to
God by thy blood out of every kindred and tongue and people
and nation. There, there's neither Jew nor
Greek. Out of every single kindred,
tongue, people and nation. Oh, what a wondrous gospel. And
has made us unto our God kings and priests and we shall reign
on the earth. Oh, what a wonderful God. Now let's close with our text
over in Genesis chapter 18 and we'll just take a quick look
at that. God's salvation has not only
been heard but seen among the people and experienced by His
people. The Lord Jesus Christ is an actual
Redeemer of a multitude out of all the nations And we give Him all the praise
and glory. Genesis 18, verses 23-25, And
Abraham drew near and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous
with the wicked? Peradventure, there be fifty
righteous within the city. Wilt thou also destroy and not
spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein? that
be far from thee to do after this manner to slay the righteous
with the wicked, and that the righteous should be as the wicked,
that be far from thee shall not the judge of all the earth do
right. Spurgeon had a good quote on this text. He says, Abraham
bases his argument upon the justice of God, and when a man dares
to do that, it is mighty pleading. For depend upon it, God will
never do an unjust thing. If thou darest to plead His righteousness
and His infallible justice, thou pleadest most powerfully. Our Lord Jesus Christ is King. God is King. He is King of all
the earth. He is King of the universe. He
is King Supreme. Shall not the judge of the earth
do rights? God is a judge of all the earth.
And He gives charge to all things, takes knowledge of all, and will
pass sentence upon all. Abraham was praying and pleading
with the Son of God in human form. This is known as a Christophany,
a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ. He who made the world, He was
governor of the world. He was judge of it. Became a
man. And now he's the mediator of
his people. And he has all judgment committed
to him. He has all power. And he's the Lord Jesus Christ. And he does all things that are
just. In His providence, there's no
unrighteousness in Him. None. Nor in any of His ways, or in
any of His works. When it says, shall not the judge
of the earth do right, John Gale says this, here right before
us, by Abraham, seems to mean not strict, rigorous justice,
but a mixture of mercy and justice. A mixture of mercy and justice. What do we have in Christ? Oh, the justice of God is satisfied
in our place. What mercy. What mercy we have
in Christ. Abraham argues, surely the supreme
judge of all the earth will show mercy in the midst of deserved
wrath. Did he not do that with us? Deserved wrath. Yet God has mercy
on sinners. He has mercy on all who come
to Him. Hosea says this, And I will sow her unto me in the
earth, and I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained
mercy. And I will say to them which were not my people, Thou
art my people. Oh, what comforts. Turn, if you would, to Romans
chapter 11, this will be the last text we look at. And I will
say to them which were not My people, thou art My people. And
they shall say, thou art My God. I remember how
I was before. I didn't have a care for God.
I didn't even want to have anything to do with God. Now He's the
only one who I want to worship, the only one who I want to praise.
He gets all the glory. He gets it all. He gets it all. And this mercy is obtained, beloved. Romans 11, and we're closed with
this. Verse 29-33 For the gifts and
calling of God are without repentance. For as ye in times past have
not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy. Sinners obtain
mercy in Christ. Undeserved mercy through their
unbelief, even so, these also Now not believe that through
your mercy they also may obtain mercy, for God has concluded
