What does the Bible say about approaching the throne of grace?

The Bible encourages believers to approach the throne of grace with confidence to receive mercy and help.

Hebrews 4:16 tells us to approach the throne of grace with boldness, allowing us to receive mercy and find grace in times of need. This passage emphasizes the accessibility we have to Christ and the comfort that comes from knowing that every prayer and burden is heard distinctly by Him. While many voices may cry out to Him simultaneously, each believer experiences the intimate attentiveness of Christ as if they were together in His presence, ensuring that no prayer is lost in the crowd.

For Christians, this is not just a promise of hearing; it is a declaration of profound care. Christ’s ability to manage the concerns of all His people reflects His divine nature and assures believers that their specific pains and groans do not go unnoticed. No matter how heavy the burden or how intricate the sorrow, believers are invited to cast their cares on Him, who sustains all of creation with His power and love.

Hebrews 4:16

How do we know Jesus hears our prayers?

Jesus hears our prayers distinctly, assuring each believer of His attentive care and presence.

Jesus's hearing of our prayers is grounded in His divine nature, being both fully God and fully man. This duality allows Him to embrace all His redeemed people without confusion or concern. Thomas Guthrie explains that although numerous prayers are offered in various languages at the same time, each prayer reaches His ear distinctly, as though it were the only one being uttered. This assurance is derived from His nature as a compassionate Saviour who desires to engage personally with each one of us.

The confidence we have is not just in His ability to hear but also in His willingness to respond. Every sigh, every groan, and every heartfelt plea we offer is met with His loving attention. The believer can rest assured that their cries do not drown in the cacophony of humanity but are uniquely recognized by the One who is intimately acquainted with all our ways. This divine attentiveness brings comfort, enabling us to approach Him with open hearts, knowing that we are understood and cared for.

Hebrews 4:16

Why is the concept of Jesus' empathy important for Christians?

Jesus' empathy assures believers that He understands their struggles and burdens deeply.

The importance of Jesus’ empathy lies in its role as a source of profound comfort for believers facing trials and tribulations. Thomas Guthrie illustrates that every believer can approach Jesus with their wounded heart, knowing that He hears each cry and sigh distinctly. This notion of empathy is vital, as it offers assurance that we are not alone in our struggles; Christ invites us to lay our burdens at His feet, knowing He understands our pain fully.

Moreover, understanding Jesus as empathetic allows Christians to comprehend the depth of His love and care. His ability to manage the affairs of countless believers while offering personalized attention is a testament to His divine nature. For Christians, this means that no burden is too heavy for Him, nor is any situation too challenging to be met with His grace. Thus, in times of sorrow or distress, Christians can draw near to Him, confident that they will receive mercy and help in their time of need.

every groan of your wounded heart. By Thomas Guthrie If Jesus was only a man, then how could he guard the interests and manage all the affairs of all his redeemed people scattered far and wide over the face of the habitable globe? What heart is large enough to embrace them all? What eyes could see them all? What ears could hear them all? Think of the 10,000 prayers pronounced in a hundred different languages that go up at once and all together to his ear. Yet there is no confusion. None are lost. None are missed in the crowd.

nor are they heard by him as standing on yonder lofty crag, we hear the din of the city that lies stretched out far beneath us, with all its separate sounds of cries and rumbling wheels and human voices mixed up into one deep, confused, hollow roar, like the boom of the sea's distant breakers.

No, every believer may feel as if he were alone with Jesus, enjoying a private audience of the king in his presence chamber. Be of good cheer. Every groan of your wounded heart, your every sigh and cry and prayer, falls as distinctly on Jesus' ear as if you stood beside his throne, or nearer still, lay with John on his bosom, and felt the beating of his heart against your own.

how full of encouragement and comfort this is to those who have sins to confess, sorrows to tell him, and many a heavy care to cast upon his sympathy and kindness. Believer, let him sustain your cares. Your case cannot be too difficult, nor can your burden be too heavy for the one who guides the rolling planets on their course. and bears on His unwearied arm the weight of the universe.

Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
