His very great and precious promises. By Charles Simeon. He has given
us His very great and precious promises, 2 Peter 1, verse 4. Nothing will yield richer consolation
to our own souls than to take the Word of God, cull out of
it every promise which it contains, carry them to the throne of grace,
and plead them before God. pardon for every sin, peace with
God, holiness of life, and eternal glory are all secured to every
genuine believer by the priceless promises of our gracious, immutable,
and omnipotent God. Yet it is simply impossible to
fully comprehend the worth of God's inestimable promises in
this life. Who shall fathom the value of
deliverance from the torments which are endured by those who
are now cast into the lake of fire and brimstone? Or who shall
form a correct estimate of the glory and felicity of heaven?
None but those who have experienced the one or the other can form
any just conception of either. Nor could anyone fully and adequately
comprehend what salvation imports, unless he has both endured the
punishment from which a condemned soul is rescued, and partaken
of the blessedness to which a glorified soul is exalted before the throne
of God. Eternity will be too short to
count the infinite worth of the exceeding great and precious
promises which are contained in the gospel of Christ. Since
we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves
from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness
out of reverence for God.
